0:00
and welcome to life Uncorked today's
0:03
segment we call aging like a fine wine I
0:06
am sitting here with Amy alcot she's an
0:08
american professional golfer and Golf
0:10
Course designer welcome to the show Amy
0:13
how are you happy to be here Karen thank
0:16
you so this show is all about people
0:18
doing extraordinary things at all times
0:21
of their life and you are no exception
0:23
to that uh tell us a little bit about
0:25
the story of how you decided to become a
0:30
well I was a child of Television Growing
0:33
Up in Southern California as you well
0:35
know and um The Golf shows would come on
0:39
after the cartoons on TV and I probably
0:43
sensed as a young girl of eight nine
0:45
years old that I was kind of a loner I
0:48
loved all sports I was a little tom girl
0:51
and um I saw this Golf shows on TV and I
0:55
was just fascinated by the art form of
0:58
it you know it was different than than
1:00
football or baseball you had to do it
1:03
with um you didn't have to do it with
1:06
anyone and I just uh took a real
1:10
knacking and love for it and the pursuit
1:13
of um Perfection soon followed you know
1:17
I grew up putting chipping and putting
1:19
into Soup cans in my front yard oh
1:21
without without parents that played golf
1:24
and that was my um that was my thing you
1:28
know go it's like uh what tennis is your
1:30
racket golf became my bag oh well I I
1:34
love that and obviously you're very very
1:36
good at your bag you've won five major
1:39
championships you you've played in if I
1:42
get this right 29 LPGA Tour events no
1:45
I've played in hundreds of LPGA
1:47
tournaments I just upate your wiki page
1:50
Amy you gota upate yeah no I've won over
1:54
29 tournaments wow and five majors and I
2:00
1975 into the kind of mid mid90s I never
2:05
used the term retire but um I traveled
2:08
the world I became you know I went out
2:11
on the LPGA Tour I was rookie of the
2:14
year and then um I became you know uh
2:19
you know one of the best to play the
2:21
game because of my love and um desire to
2:24
to be the best and in fact you are a
2:26
member of the World Golf Hall of Fame
2:29
and and I find this fascinating and I
2:31
want to hear about this part of the
2:32
architectural team that designed the
2:34
golf course for the 2016 Summer Olympics
2:38
in Rio de Janeiro what was that like
2:41
well you know um as I said I was
2:43
attracted to golf as an art form I was
2:45
younger and what what really d drove me
2:50
is playing golf courses all around the
2:52
world as I you know became started to
2:55
travel from the Philippines to Canada to
2:58
Australia to South Carolina and seeing
3:01
different golf courses and um so I would
3:04
make notes about great golf courses and
3:08
what the golf holes look like and um so
3:13
I have gotten into golf architecture
3:15
golf design golf Consulting I do it um
3:19
and uh you know there's not a lot of
3:22
women in it although there should be
3:24
more right um but I worked with Gil Hans
3:27
who's a very fine architect and we built
3:30
the and designed the course for the
3:32
Olympics in Rio in 2016 so I hope to do
3:37
more of it I really it's something I
3:38
really enjoy I have a uh a I'm very
3:43
creative about it so what drives you at
3:47
at this stage in in life what keeps you
3:49
going well um I think you know just
3:54
because you get into your 60s doesn't
3:56
mean that life's over you know I think
3:59
you get better and I never use the word
4:02
as I said retire um I I have this drive
4:06
I think like a lot of people to remain
4:08
relevant um you know I've made uh a
4:12
living and a a name playing golf um but
4:16
it's not all I am and I hope to like I
4:20
like to give back to the game to Junior
4:22
Golf growing the game of golf growing it
4:25
with women I'm involved with the first
4:30
and various different which is a program
4:33
that helps young underprivileged kids
4:35
are learn the core values of of life
4:37
through golf um so I do lots of stuff I
4:42
do you know charity golf events I do
4:46
outings for corporations I still work
4:49
with companies I am a representative of
4:53
a company called employco which is a
4:55
large HR company um and um and um so I'm
5:01
enjoying that um you know I've got to
5:05
know a lot of people have a lot of
5:07
contacts and um you're enjoying life
5:10
you're enjoy I totally enjoy life I wear
5:13
a pen that says living my best life so
5:16
there you go so if somebody were to come
5:19
up to you Amy somebody you don't know
5:21
and they they see everything that you've
5:23
done and continue to do and they're
5:25
looking for some inspiration that they
5:27
can maybe do something different new the
5:30
same as they go into the next stage I
5:33
know I don't say retire either it's just
5:35
another stage it's the next next right
5:37
what inspiration could you give them
5:39
should they do it should they just do it
5:41
or what do you say well I find that a
5:43
lot of people are very fear-based
5:45
they're afraid you know they're afraid
5:48
to take risks take challenges put
5:51
themselves out there I mean but most
5:54
people do that at one phase or another
5:57
and you either you know and
6:00
all you can do is put one foot in front
6:02
of the other and if something at another
6:04
phase of Life finds you find fascinating
6:08
to learn more about it I was just
6:09
listening to an interview with Bob Iger
6:12
at Disney talking about you know he
6:15
didn't expect to come back to work at
6:17
Disney but he's there and he doesn't
6:19
want to be there for forever because
6:22
there's things he wants to learn about
6:24
and I think that's this innate Quest we
6:27
have you know yeah agreed and think
6:29
what's that saying Feel the fear do it
6:32
anyways yeah well that's a good line
6:34
I've never heard that but I like that
6:36
feel the fear do it anyways that's how I
6:38
live my life um so I guess the last
6:41
question I really want to know is what's
6:44
Alcott what's next well I'm open to
6:48
whatever kind of comes my way um you
6:52
know um I always live by the adage dance
6:55
with who BR you you know I know golf I
6:58
know the people with in the industry I
7:01
still love to play golf um I don't do it
7:05
as much for a full-time living anymore
7:08
living out of a suitcase traveling
7:10
around the world competing um so I still
7:13
love it and want to be a part of it but
7:16
I don't know you know uh what will
7:18
happen um um I think my story needs to
7:22
be told a little more because I think
7:24
it's um a more it's there's an
7:26
inspiration there for young people
7:28
totally and that's why I wanted you on
7:31
um what we didn't say in the beginning
7:32
is we went to high school together and
7:34
it's so fun to be able to uh reconnect
7:37
with people from a couple years ago you
7:40
know yeah and I mean we're getting older
7:42
right Karen we're getting better we're
7:44
not just getting older we are getting
7:46
better amen Amir I wanted to say thank
7:49
you for sharing your story with us you
7:51
are an inspiration and I do agree with
7:53
you you need to get out there a little
7:55
more your story and that's what we're
7:56
going to do for you here for those of
7:58
you who are watching right now live or
8:00
on replay we know that you have a choice
8:03
as to where you spend your time you
8:04
chose to spend it with Amy and I today
8:06
and we are thrilled go out give somebody
8:11
an awesome day and say goodbye to Amy
8:13
goodbye Amy byebye and see you next time
