0:03
mental health I'm here with my co-host
0:05
Rob Glasser and our very special guest
0:07
Matthew Glasser we talk about the topics
0:10
that shape mental health today teach the
0:12
importance of inclusion and share why we
0:14
should be kind so whether you're here
0:16
live or on replay let us know where you
0:18
are tuning in from today's topic is a
0:21
lot of fun we're talking about capturing
0:24
memories and we have a special guest
0:26
Matthew Glasser so for those of you are
0:28
trying to figure out gee you guys all
0:30
have the last same name you know geez
0:32
that's because we're family so Matthew
0:35
welcome to the show Rob always a
0:38
pleasure let's talk about
0:40
photography let's talk about capturing
0:42
moments why do we love taking photos Rob
0:45
all right well that is me so uh from a
0:49
really awesome website the Florida
0:50
museum of Photographic Arts um I don't
0:54
know if we have the link we'll put it up
0:55
uh but not only does article great but
0:57
they have a lot of their photos on
0:59
display
1:01
um one of them one of their people wrote
1:03
a very short read so it's a very quick
1:05
one why do we take pictures
1:07
um
1:08
is it for the benefit of others do we
1:10
shape perceptions of stories for
1:11
ourselves or are we purposely showing
1:13
others something about our lives that's
1:16
how they began pictures have a way of
1:17
solidifying our personal experiences and
1:20
stories from our point of view they gave
1:22
us a platform for individual or unique
1:24
perception
1:26
um and no single story is the same you
1:28
can take the same exact photo and have a
1:31
completely different
1:32
um story behind it right
1:34
so they're one of their things that they
1:36
highlighted was there are multiple
1:38
reasons why we share
1:40
um ranging from staying connected to uh
1:46
a large Global world
1:48
and to covering up uncertainty about a
1:51
life event a major shift or just someone
1:54
of influence
1:57
um doesn't really give you an exact
1:58
reason why but it seems to be that
2:00
they're saying that the fun behind doing
2:02
this is to really give yourself an
2:06
outlet and it's yourself doesn't have to
2:07
be for anybody else to share a
2:12
fun moment in in time
2:15
so that kind of begs the question
2:17
Matthew you know you first of all you're
2:19
an amazing photographer why do you take
2:21
pictures why do you do photographs
2:23
what's what is it with that yeah I think
2:25
for me it's it's two things I think the
2:27
act of the photography allows me to get
2:30
outside myself and focus on the object
2:32
that I'm photographing
2:35
um like many people I always are filling
2:37
my head with thoughts at all times when
2:40
I have that camera and I'm focusing on a
2:42
subject it really forces me to be in the
2:45
moment be present with that subject and
2:48
so I like that I like the ability to to
2:50
use that as a way to get outside myself
2:52
and really uh recognize the the world
2:55
around me I do a lot of nature animals
2:57
Landscapes and so to really be able to
2:59
get into the natural world and see it in
3:02
a way that you often miss when you're
3:03
just taking a hike or a walk
3:06
um you know photography really allows
3:07
you to to look at the world a little
3:09
differently uh because if you're doing
3:11
it right you're always sort of looking
3:12
for that shot that tells a story and it
3:16
makes you stop and it makes you think
3:18
about whether or not this is something
3:20
worthy of a photo and what you can take
3:23
away from that
3:24
um so I think for me it's you know the
3:25
act of Photography is is very
3:27
therapeutic it's a it's a way to a
3:29
mental Escape for me and then the photos
3:32
themselves uh as Rob said you know serve
3:35
as as the form of nostalgia
3:37
um and memory
3:39
um you know I've thought about when you
3:41
when you have a wonderful event or a
3:43
wonderful incident in your life what's
3:46
more consequential in the long run that
3:48
that actual event or the Nostalgia and
3:50
the memories around him you know I could
3:52
have a great day at a theme park it's a
3:54
great day but the memory of that great
3:56
day will stay with me far longer than
3:59
the day itself and so I think
4:00
photography is a way to extend that
4:02
Nostalgia and keep a reminder of those
4:04
moments I like that extend the Nostalgia
4:06
I really like that now for those of of
4:08
you are wondering Matthew is the
4:10
managing editor of NBC's LX news and I'm
4:14
wondering you know the fact that you do
4:16
that and you've been in the news
4:17
industry for a very long time does that
4:19
color how you decide what you're going
4:21
to do and what pictures you're going to
4:22
take or do you do the complete opposite
4:24
to get yourself away from the news
4:26
yeah I think some of both I think good
4:28
storytelling is good storytelling
4:30
whether it's a single photo whether it's
4:32
a video whether it's an article you're
4:34
all about telling a story through images
4:36
photography is a visual medium other
4:39
people have other forms of other outlets
4:41
but at the end of the day I sort of use
4:43
that as my guide in terms of my subject
4:45
matter though I do try to avoid anything
4:48
tied directly to the news I get plenty
4:51
of that on a day-to-day basis I
4:53
certainly don't need that and the rare
4:54
times I'm off that's why I think nature
4:57
and and animals and Landscape tend to be
4:59
a great because it's it's something so
5:01
different than from what I normally do I
5:03
find it uh pretty therapeutic to be out
5:06
there
5:07
and so I know rob you you take pictures
5:10
I think sometimes on your iPhone right I
5:12
think a lot of us use our phones these
5:14
days to take pictures
5:16
um and then I think old school and maybe
5:18
it's not just old school I think there
5:19
may be a return back to using your your
5:22
regular your real cameras right
5:24
um do you think that there is an uh and
5:26
this is to both of you guys do you think
5:28
that um there is a
5:31
um a desire to have people not use their
5:34
cameras and to just use their phones to
5:36
be in the moment because we live in that
5:38
reality World
5:40
um what do you say I mean Rob what do
5:41
you think do you have your phone with
5:42
you all the time do you just take
5:44
pictures or that's not your thing
5:48
um it's definitely easier to have it on
5:49
your phone because it's a one click and
5:51
you're done
5:53
um I don't necessarily go for any
5:55
specific looks so I just take the
5:58
picture but I would say probably ease of
6:00
use uh which is what most of us want you
6:03
want it quick and easy done move on to
6:05
your next
6:07
um you know thing
6:09
the phone says Matthew or the iPhone
6:11
because I know they have like three
6:13
cameras in it now or something like that
6:14
is are they as good as a camera or no
6:16
not possibly
6:18
yeah look I I think first of all I I
6:21
once asked when I was when I was younger
6:22
a professor what's the best camera that
6:24
I should get and his response was the
6:26
one that's with you
6:28
um and I think you know that's really
6:29
true for for most people is you know if
6:32
you have your phone in your pocket then
6:34
that's the best camera for you at the
6:35
time that you want to take that picture
6:37
um and this and these modern cameras are
6:39
incredible um I mean they take amazing
6:41
pictures the iPhones now have a macro in
6:44
addition to the the three lenses
6:47
um so you can get close-up shots of
6:48
plants of insects you know I once got an
6:51
amazing shot of a drop of water coming
6:54
off of a leaf uh using the iPhone macro
6:56
so I think um it's it's a great device
6:59
and it's the thing that most people have
7:02
with them and it's the thing that they
7:03
should feel comfortable using um if you
7:05
want to take it to the next level
7:06
there's plenty of ways to do that uh but
7:08
by by no means do you need to have an
7:11
expensive camera setup to be able to
7:12
enjoy photography and I think that's
7:14
great and I think it's brought it's
7:16
brought that Medium to the general
7:17
public that can't afford to have the
7:19
Cannons and all those different you know
7:21
cameras out there uh Krista again it's a
7:24
family affair today so Krista says
7:26
photography is therapeutic for her and
7:28
it helps me remember considering her
7:30
memory is terrible and also she also
7:33
said it's certainly more convenient but
7:34
it does have its limitations and I think
7:36
we all agree on that if you are tuning
7:38
in live right now and you have comments
7:40
about taking photographs whether it's on
7:42
your phone or whether it's using a a
7:45
traditional camera let us know what you
7:46
think about all of this
7:48
um rob you know we talk about how
7:50
sharing memories is good for the soul
7:52
appreciation and gratitude what does
7:54
that mean
7:57
um well actually if you want to throw
7:58
out the pictures I think it might be a
8:00
good visual way
8:01
let me fill up the pictures so here we
8:04
go
8:04
all right so
8:06
um yeah so how is it good so this
8:08
particular one is when she was actually
8:10
on the newspaper so she happened
8:13
oh I'm sorry my wife Krista hello you're
8:16
watching uh she was uh in El Centro
8:19
recovering a news story and said I have
8:23
a good shot I'm taking it because I want
8:25
one for me and that's what you did she
8:27
got the shot so
8:30
that's one reason behind it it's just
8:32
it's the uh moment you're in there why
8:34
not just take it uh this one I believe
8:37
is her Santa Barbara
8:39
um
8:41
gorgeous yeah I believe it looks like
8:43
the pier up there
8:46
um but again you know it's it's the good
8:48
you know edit that the timing is perfect
8:51
but it's also just like the moment
8:53
you're in there you know oh there you go
8:55
she said her favorite fireworks picture
8:56
ever
8:57
um but yeah so this is just a really
9:00
good moment you know she was up there at
9:02
the time when the sun was setting and
9:04
you get I love how you know the
9:06
reflection off the water
9:08
um it's just it's a really cool uh image
9:11
and it's like a postcard right it's like
9:13
something you get at a at a thing and
9:15
you would send this to somebody because
9:16
it's a really cool
9:18
uh location right so here's the next one
9:22
okay so this was uh from Lancaster it's
9:25
called Apollo Park and as you can see
9:27
it's surrounded literally it's like an
9:29
island it's surrounded by a lake
9:32
um again the the reflection the the day
9:36
um if anybody has been up to Lancaster
9:38
you know I know very hot but you find
9:41
places like this and that's also cool
9:43
I'm sure Matt might agree uh you find
9:46
places that you didn't know maybe were
9:48
there and you happen to be there you
9:49
come across it and you have no other
9:51
thought then oh let me take a minute to
9:53
take a picture because you might not
9:55
visit it again and you know it's a it's
9:59
a spur of the moment but it's a
10:02
you know a memory
10:04
so the next photo uh okay so this is my
10:07
favorite so this is actually Laguna
10:09
Beach and you know me I'm a big Gothic
10:11
horror person this literally looks like
10:14
something out of a book this looks like
10:16
something from Europe to me from
10:18
illustration it looks like an
10:19
illustration it's like an illustration
10:21
but this she found uh Laguna Beach she
10:24
told me it's called the pirate Tower so
10:26
literally it even has a you know Gothic
10:29
name the pirate Tower
10:31
um but this is just amazing I mean you
10:33
you live in a city or a state and you
10:36
don't even know and then you come across
10:37
something and it's probably the best
10:40
thing you've ever seen because you never
10:42
expected to find this
10:45
you know in the middle and then
10:47
um okay I think the flower one is next
10:49
right oh no we're doing it okay so
10:52
um we named him Rodney he actually lives
10:53
in our backyard uh Rodney likes to uh
10:56
give us his presence once in a while he
10:58
actually pants like a dog it is so hot
11:01
outside yeah he literally stops in our
11:04
backyard in the shade to get some water
11:06
from the pool and relax but I like this
11:10
one the most because of the pictures
11:11
that we have I actually was here to see
11:13
it so for me I was there I saw it
11:16
outside and you can tell I believe I
11:19
don't know I have to ask her if this was
11:20
her phone or her camera I think it was
11:21
her camera
11:23
um is this a roadrunner is this a
11:25
roadrunner it's a roadrunner yeah but
11:27
what's cool is that he comes back now so
11:29
not only do we have this photo but you
11:31
go oh my God it's the guy from the
11:33
picture that we took three months ago
11:34
now he's back in our backyard so this is
11:37
one of my favorites because you know we
11:39
get to see her and then lastly on a trip
11:42
to Canada uh she went to one of the
11:43
Botanical Gardens and this was one for
11:45
close-ups I know one of her favorites is
11:48
Flora whether it's trees flowers what
11:51
have you
11:52
um and you know it just it's your liking
11:54
you do it well you take an awesome
11:56
picture and you end up with what you see
11:59
in front of you you're beautiful and
12:00
Matthew we're gonna we're gonna scroll
12:02
through yours um I actually have put
12:04
some of your photos as uh banners on my
12:07
uh profile this is an amazing photo tell
12:11
us where it's at what was your
12:12
inspiration
12:14
sure um before that though I just want
12:16
to shout out to Krista uh her photos are
12:19
fantastic and you know a lot of people
12:21
will say to me I take terrible photos
12:22
and what I say is you just haven't
12:24
really practiced the different aspects
12:26
of Photography what makes Chris's photo
12:28
so great not just the subjects but the
12:31
composition I mean she could have taken
12:33
a lot of those head on straight up
12:34
forward and it would not have had the
12:36
impact that it did she chose to compose
12:39
them in a way that made them incredibly
12:40
dramatic and told a story
12:42
um you know and so in the case of this
12:44
one it was a particularly Moody day the
12:47
weather over in Los Angeles was was
12:49
changing Moment by moment and I was uh
12:52
on Griffith Park
12:54
um overlooking downtown Los Angeles and
12:57
I was really taken back by the contrast
12:59
of the of the yellow flowers and the
13:02
grayness of the day
13:04
um and so it really served as a nice
13:06
contrast between where I was at the
13:08
moment and and what I was looking at and
13:11
it definitely struck me as uh something
13:12
that was photo worthy at the time you
13:14
beautiful and this next one
13:17
huh
13:19
yeah so this is the the flower fields in
13:21
Carlsbad um every year they grow out
13:24
these flowers in different colors and
13:25
different rows
13:27
um and a lot of people go and um and and
13:30
take them
13:31
um you know so part of me always says
13:33
does the world need another flower photo
13:35
you know and if I'm gonna take that can
13:37
I do something different with it that
13:39
maybe hasn't been done and so when I saw
13:42
this old tractor and in the background
13:44
the windmill uh I thought that was a
13:47
great way to kind of do something a
13:48
little differently than just a close-up
13:50
of yet another beautiful flower
13:52
gorgeous absolutely gorgeous and the
13:55
next photo that I'm going to bring up is
13:59
sticking his tongue out of this
14:02
so um that's a red panda uh from the San
14:05
Diego Zoo I took that fairly recently
14:07
and one of the things that photography
14:09
also teaches you is patience
14:12
um you know especially when you're
14:13
photographing animals and kids and
14:17
people you know waiting for that right
14:19
moment everybody you know the crowd was
14:22
coming by looking at the panda and
14:24
moving on I just waited I waited and I
14:26
waited and eventually he turned his head
14:28
and he began to stick his tongue out and
14:30
I got a variety of shots of him with his
14:32
mouth open with his mouth closed but had
14:35
I just moved on the crowd I would have
14:37
missed that opportunity and I think you
14:39
know photography cause forces you to
14:41
slow down take deep breaths and really
14:43
appreciate what you're looking at and
14:46
waiting for that exact moment to get
14:48
that that shot that you that you're
14:49
looking for so true so so true
14:53
this person is one of my favorite I
14:55
actually have that I think right now
14:57
sitting on my banner I love this one
15:00
so that's uh Yosemite one of my favorite
15:02
places we could do a whole episode on
15:04
how hiking and nature is therapeutic but
15:06
um that's Mirror Lake
15:08
um and I was hiking um out there and I
15:11
just saw the reflection of the the
15:13
mountain on the water and it felt like a
15:15
perfect opportunity to capture that kind
15:17
of moment in time
15:18
um and say that for uh like we said for
15:21
nostalgia beautiful beautiful and this
15:25
one well I I especially like this one
15:27
and and you know why Matthew tell us
15:29
where this is taken yeah so that's uh
15:31
Napa uh that's off the back of the Wine
15:34
Train uh I was with uh the family at the
15:37
time uh and I decided to kind of leave
15:39
our table and and stand in the back uh
15:41
and take pictures as we were going down
15:44
the tracks
15:45
um we came into this opening uh this
15:47
this area with trees on each side and
15:49
the track kind of old and it was covered
15:51
with these leaves
15:53
um and it definitely felt like a great
15:54
moment to get a picture
15:57
you know look truly you're you're very
16:00
gifted Krista is very gifted the two of
16:03
you um to have two gifted photographers
16:05
in the family and then there's me who
16:08
you know I'm lucky if I can you know get
16:10
somebody in the center of the photo uh
16:12
I'm gonna put this up here Chris says
16:14
patience is a great tip and it is you
16:16
wait for the shot right are we all
16:18
agreeing on that one you wait for the
16:20
shot yeah
16:22
um
16:24
giving ideas to others who might be
16:27
wanting to go out and try their hand at
16:29
photography where are some places Rob
16:31
where some ideas as to where someone
16:34
might want to go and take some photos
16:37
um we'll piggybacking off my morning
16:39
video about uh hiking for beginners
16:42
um if you are like um Matt was saying if
16:44
you're lucky enough to be somewhere with
16:46
you know mountain range or maybe a rock
16:49
formation I know when I was in
16:50
Chatsworth whether it was man-made or
16:53
not but there was all of these stones
16:55
that were perfectly put around the area
16:58
it probably was done by somebody but
17:00
either way
17:01
um you come across these cool little
17:03
statuesque looking things and that I
17:06
think is the coolest thing to do if
17:07
you're out and about now my secondarily
17:09
favorite wine at home is the pets
17:11
because like like he was saying you know
17:14
you always get them in a funny moment
17:16
whether they're on their back whether
17:17
they're curled up our little dog is
17:19
always snug water on blanket and you
17:21
can't not you know want to just zoom in
17:23
and get that that face the Boop as we
17:26
call it
17:27
um so you know depending on what you're
17:29
into I think you can easily get a good
17:31
one from home as you would out and about
17:33
on a trail or like you said at the theme
17:36
park park at the zoo wherever you are
17:39
you'll probably find one spot or one
17:42
shot that is going to bring you back the
17:44
best nostalgia so Matthew where do you I
17:47
mean obviously you let you go hiking um
17:49
you take photographs there you take them
17:51
in the moment any other ideas that we
17:53
can share with our audience as to where
17:54
they might consider taking some photos
17:57
yeah I think there are moments
17:59
everywhere and I think what's great
18:00
about photography is if you look at the
18:02
world a little differently and you you
18:04
take as you're walking as you're living
18:06
your life do you pay attention to what's
18:09
around you you're gonna find amazing
18:11
things to take photos of even the most
18:12
simple objects can be beautiful in the
18:15
right circumstance you know a leaf
18:16
blowing across a green grass an old
18:19
church a couple you know in in in a
18:22
doorway I think there are there are
18:25
great places to take photos no matter
18:27
where you are but I don't think people
18:28
take the time to really appreciate the
18:31
world around them they're so busy
18:32
they're on their devices they're on
18:34
their phones they're not paying
18:36
attention and they're missing a lot of
18:37
great opportunities to capture some of
18:39
these these cool images and we talk
18:41
about that all the time Rob and I in our
18:42
show is about being appreciative and
18:44
grateful for the moment that we're in
18:47
and having gratitude and I I thank you
18:48
for bringing that up because that is so
18:50
so so very very important I have a
18:53
question to ask both of you and this is
18:55
kind of came to mind the other big thing
18:57
was taking pictures especially with your
18:59
phone or doing those selfies and I think
19:01
that kind of came to be uh more because
19:04
of social media would everyone agree
19:06
with that that you know we want to show
19:07
ourselves and we take that picture uh we
19:10
we now can do that we can take a photo
19:12
you know take our phone turn it around
19:13
and take a photo ourselves we couldn't
19:15
do that with our cameras we'd have to
19:16
set it on a tripod put it on a timer and
19:19
then go run really really fast to
19:21
everybody who's standing there and they
19:22
go right
19:24
um do you think that the iPhone or the
19:26
Android or any kind of phone where we
19:28
can take these selfies has that changed
19:30
our our world in a good way or a bad way
19:34
any thoughts on that look I think I
19:37
think like most things it's nuanced it's
19:39
some it's both
19:40
um I think selfies are great to capture
19:43
times with friends and family if you're
19:45
lucky enough to meet your favorite
19:46
celebrity and they're and they're
19:47
gracious enough to let you do that you
19:50
know those are great moments
19:51
um I think selfies can also be
19:52
incredibly inappropriate uh in certain
19:55
times I see people posting selfies that
19:56
I that make me cringe
19:58
um you know it's doing a selfie and
20:00
while people are suffering behind you uh
20:02
within my industry I see that way too
20:04
often unfortunately not a lot within my
20:07
my company but I see a lot of you know
20:10
reporters at a scene of a terrible story
20:12
taking a selfie and that's probably not
20:15
the best time to take a selfie if
20:17
somebody has died or someone lost their
20:19
home or someone's in in distress uh
20:22
that's not a great time to make it about
20:24
you but in the right circumstances
20:26
selfies are great and they're a great
20:28
way to remember things they're just time
20:29
and place I think Rob what do you think
20:31
about selfies
20:33
I can take him or leave him honestly
20:37
you lead them to Krista to take the
20:39
selfies with you right yes which I don't
20:42
know if that's called a selfie but yes I
20:45
don't think I don't know if it's called
20:45
a selfie either
20:47
um if you're listening live or even on
20:50
replay either one let us know in the
20:52
comments what kind of photos you like to
20:54
take where you like to take them we'd
20:55
love to hear from you and we will share
20:58
some of those on later shows
21:00
um I'd like to let everyone know how
21:01
they can stay in touch with Matthew now
21:03
Matthew I know on your website right now
21:05

21:09
photos that you shared with us and a
21:11
huge huge selection basic a gallery of
21:14
all of your photos right I encourage
21:16
people I encourage you to go check them
21:18
out because we only just got the tip of
21:20
the iceberg with what you shared with us
21:22
today and Rob we want to make sure that
21:24
people visit Rob at his website at
21:27
altereduniverse.live it has also very
21:29
cool things over there and you can see
21:31
me at karenglasser.live also I know that
21:34
both Matthew and Robert are on LinkedIn
21:36
Rob is at Rob Glasser and Matthew said
21:38
Matthew Glasser uh see you there and
21:40
again we're going to share some
21:41
resources if you uh are feeling some
21:45
mental challenges right now in distress
21:46
and you need some help please reach out
21:51
nimh.nih.gov the government entity and
21:54
also Nami nami.org a lot of good
21:57
resources there and of course we are
21:59
talking about the new three code phone
22:02
number 988 if you call that
22:05
it is a Central National number and it
22:08
will send you to whatever state you are
22:10
in to the help that you need also as Rob
22:13
pointed out a couple of weeks ago it is
22:15
also a great resource for veterans any
22:20
last minute thoughts uh we'll start with
22:22
Matthew first about photography and how
22:25
it just helps our our well-being
22:27
yeah I think look don't don't be overly
22:29
critical I think a lot of people are
22:31
discouraged because they're not taking
22:32
those award-winning shots and like
22:34
anything photography takes practice it
22:36
takes mindset it takes listing the world
22:38
a little differently so go out and do it
22:40
the great thing about cameras digital
22:41
cameras cell phones is you're not paying
22:43
for film you're not paying to develop
22:45
some people are going out there what's
22:46
film but
22:48
um
22:48
it gives you unlimited opportunities to
22:50
be creative and try new things and I
22:52
encourage people to just take that
22:53
advantage of that go out and play take
22:56
50 shots take 100 shots and go back and
22:58
look at them and see which ones
22:59
resonated with you and which ones uh you
23:01
want to save great great thoughts Rob
23:04
any last minute thoughts about
23:05
photography and well-being and
23:07
appreciation
23:10
um you know just enjoy your moments and
23:13
time if you are lucky enough to have
23:14
your camera phone go for it but if
23:17
you're lucky enough to just have the
23:18
moment to see then take advantage of
23:21
that too Kodak memory in our mind right
23:25
call them is Kodak around I don't think
23:27
Kodak is still around it's a Memory it's
23:29
a photographic memory in our mind we
23:32
want to thank our audience for being
23:35
here whether it's live a replay you are
23:36
making a choice as to where you spend
23:38
your time you chose to spend it with
23:39
Matthew Robin I today we are grateful
23:42
for that go out give somebody an awesome
23:45
day and we'll see you next time on the
23:48
next minding your mental health goodbye
23:50
everyone
