guys it's time for another episode of
0:01
vault universe live if you're a fan of
0:03
animals or animal stories you've come to
0:06
the right place so
0:08
let's go
0:12
[Music]
0:27
hey guys it's karen otherwise known as
0:31
rob's mom
0:33
and so welcome to the show we're excited
0:34
that you're here if you're here live
0:36
we're thrilled you're here live if
0:37
you're not here live on replay we're
0:39
just as thrilled make sure you put your
0:40
name and where you are watching from in
0:43
the comments but if you are here live
0:45
and you have a question you have
0:46
something to say
0:47
put it in the comments we'll put it up
0:48
on the screen so rob you kind of alluded
0:51
to what we were talking about today
0:53
what do we do
0:55
today is the love of animals because why
0:58
not who doesn't love
1:00
just looking at cute pictures it just
1:02
makes you happy so this uh topic came to
1:04
mind from book i was reading so we
1:06
decided
1:07
let's expand on the idea
1:10
and
1:11
the first point is why we love
1:14
animal stories specifically the cute
1:17
ones the ones that go ah exactly
1:20
my answer to that was because why not
1:23
why not um because happy feels good
1:25
which i feel like is somebody's slogan
1:27
somewhere i don't know um
1:30
so happy animal stories well actually
1:32
let me start off so for me i limit any
1:35
news whatsoever because it's not good
1:37
for me
1:38
whatever but the one thing i do follow
1:41
along on twitter which is the main
1:43
social media
1:45
is
1:46
animal related videos stories pictures
1:49
what have you because you know you could
1:51
be having a bad day or a good day and it
1:53
just gets that much better because
1:54
you're like puppy
1:56
um so why we love them um
2:00
i would like to think the obvious is
2:03
it's the one story that usually can't be
2:06
bad
2:07
even if the story might start kind of
2:09
sad
2:10
it usually ends pretty well case in
2:12
point the story is about people who
2:14
might find an abandoned dog and after
2:16
they clean it up and they get it all you
2:18
know used to people it becomes the best
2:20
dog in the world um you know stuff like
2:23
that so i think
2:25
that's why
2:27
we love those kind of stories
2:29
i would think you probably agree i don't
2:31
know what
2:32
i do i mean uh first of all i i agree i
2:34
think animals especially dogs i mean and
2:37
cats but in my case dogs um they're like
2:41
an amazing family member that a doesn't
2:44
talk back i'm kidding
2:48
yeah uh but they're but they're like a
2:50
family member they are a family member
2:52
and and i think in some cases they
2:54
become even maybe even bigger than a
2:57
family member because you you literally
3:00
i mean when you're feeling sad you pet
3:01
your dog um when you when you need to
3:03
get out maybe get some fresh air you
3:05
take your dog out for a walk so totally
3:07
i i i agree with you 100 there is
3:10
something about reading about animals
3:12
watching animals hearing about animals
3:14
that makes you just like you say go ah
3:18
exactly and to piggyback off you know
3:20
they're family members they're not just
3:22
creatures that live in the house um
3:25
and whether you're a dog a cat a bird
3:28
you know we have reptiles
3:30
whatever the species may be it becomes
3:33
your you know your child your your
3:36
whoever um
3:38
yeah i mean i think generally speaking
3:40
it would be hard-pressed to find anybody
3:42
who would find something wrong with a
3:45
animal story you know and again not all
3:47
of them are always pleasant you know i
3:49
know way back when with the whole
3:50
seaworld incident and there was that
3:52
revolution about keeping whales and you
3:54
know whatever
3:55
but even still
3:57
something
3:59
educational comes out of it um and
4:03
actually you know what we're gonna go in
4:04
the book later but one of the stories in
4:06
her book that we're talking about is
4:08
actually about uh it was called you know
4:10
where's willy after the you know free
4:12
willy movie but it was about a whale
4:14
that actually wouldn't leave its
4:16
uh domestication because it was having
4:19
too much of a good time
4:21
pampered you know it got fed every day
4:24
it got play time and he's like why would
4:26
i want to leave i got it here so the
4:29
fact that yes it's not great to be you
4:31
know and again there's a whole zoo thing
4:33
where they're not keeping animals
4:34
forever but you come to a point where
4:38
even the animals are like i like it here
4:41
i'm gonna stay so
4:43
i also think that a lot of if you you
4:45
know you touched on the zoos and you
4:47
touched on things like that you know a
4:48
lot of the zoos in today's day
4:51
are literally not just a zoo where
4:54
people go and gawk at the animals and
4:55
behind the caves
4:56
they're literally set up i mean dad and
4:59
i watch these shows like all the time
5:01
where these zoos are set up to either be
5:03
a place for um to uh make sure that the
5:06
animals don't go extinct and they help
5:08
breed them and they help make sure so
5:11
i kind of like where the zoo is going at
5:14
this point because it feels like we're
5:15
taking care of our our loved ones so to
5:18
speak we're taking care of our loved
5:19
ones so it very much it's a it's a
5:21
member of the family and um i can't
5:23
imagine as you know we had to put our
5:25
one of our dogs down a couple of weeks
5:26
ago and
5:28
it's hard i mean it's really hard and so
5:31
um i was excited about this show because
5:33
i need something happy to go you know to
5:35
go along with that so i know you picked
5:37
out some books but before we get to the
5:39
books i know you want to talk about this
5:40
chemical thing because it's not just
5:43
well we like animals and we like animal
5:45
stories there's actually a reason
5:47
there's actually something that happens
5:48
physically
5:49
right so i'm going to go over what it is
5:52
endorphins i learned my word for the day
5:54
today um and then we'll kind of slice
5:56
into the specific book um on animals as
5:59
well
6:00
so
6:01
found a website
6:02
meetcortex.com that's m-e-e-t
6:07
and one of their little blogs talked
6:09
about storytelling in endorphins and
6:10
basically what they said was it's the
6:13
most powerful way to create them there's
6:16
also chemicals like dopamine cortisol as
6:18
well
6:19
but endorphins are the ones that kind of
6:21
give us that that's smiley that yay
6:24
um and really it's just a matter of how
6:26
you tell it and who you're telling it to
6:29
obviously their science behind it is the
6:31
happier the story the happier you're
6:33
going to be however there's also like
6:35
the happy cries so even when you cry
6:37
about something you're still releasing
6:39
because it's whatever but really it's
6:41
the way you go about the story so this
6:43
could be you know a book a show whatever
6:45
but i think the easiest story to tell to
6:48
make you smile
6:50
is something about an animal and i think
6:52
you know while this website is
6:54
specifically going general story
6:57
it made the most sense to talk about
6:59
because
7:00
you know the topic now going into some
7:03
of the stories here now she apparently
7:05
the author she has a bunch of animals
7:08
she lives on a farm you know with with
7:10
her husband plus the animals
7:12
um in her in her uh
7:14
i'll show you this page
7:17
um you know the who's it for the first
7:20
two i believe are her human people but
7:22
everybody else down here are the names
7:24
of her animals so we have duffy and
7:26
laura and beauty and helen and tweed so
7:28
you can tell she likes your animals
7:30
awesome
7:32
so
7:33
this one's kind of funny and you know
7:35
we're gonna like you said we're gonna go
7:36
over some other ones but this was funny
7:37
one story i wanted to go first because
7:39
it's actually from california it takes
7:41
place in moore park zoo as well as
7:43
burbank where animal movies are shot
7:46
but she did a story about you know up
7:48
until a point the humane society had no
7:50
rules about
7:52
uh how an animal was used for education
7:55
purposes or for filming nowadays just
7:58
like a human or a kid you can't have
8:00
them on for more than i think what two
8:02
or three days at a time right one rule i
8:05
find interesting was if you're using a
8:06
great ape like a gorilla champ or
8:08
orangutan you must build a park next to
8:12
the filming set
8:13
for it to play
8:15
wow the orangutan or the gorilla
8:17
whatever is going to be there for say
8:19
you know four or five days
8:21
they require some sort of
8:25
facility you want to call it with
8:28
stuff to hang on stuff
8:31
and do all that and that was the first
8:33
story that struck me because hey we live
8:35
in the area you know the moore park zoo
8:37
was where i used to be by
8:39
and
8:40
it was an interesting story and it
8:41
wasn't necessarily like the endorphin
8:43
woo but it was the oh
8:46
so this is where we've come to like cool
8:49
yeah um one of the other ones i loved
8:51
was about a lady who used to keep
8:53
pigeons and you know her grandpa gets
8:55
raised pigeons for a while
8:57
she had to move and she had to give the
8:59
pigeons to a facility who raised them
9:02
however
9:04
some sort of reason they got out and
9:06
went back to the house they lived in
9:08
even though she doesn't live there
9:10
and it's the idea that they have the
9:12
ingrained notion of where they live and
9:14
that's where they live so for the
9:15
longest time the new owners are like
9:17
where the hell these pigeons coming from
9:19
right and it took them a while to you
9:21
know have to reacclimate them to the new
9:23
and that's just some of the few things i
9:25
talked about the whale story she did one
9:27
about a place i think in arizona where
9:29
donkeys when they get too old they get
9:31
to go live and be old donkeys and they
9:33
get to run around and they get to eat
9:35
hay and they have other donkeys to play
9:37
with and they just basically get to be
9:39
old and
9:40
do nothing just relax so
9:43
that's the kind of story that's
9:44
interesting you know you look at it you
9:46
go well that's kind of depressing like
9:47
the pigeons miss their family but i
9:50
believe for me the point of the story is
9:51
not necessarily that they're at a loss
9:54
it's the amazing abilities that we give
9:57
that we don't give non-human animals
9:59
right
10:00
that these books show
10:02
and there have been stories rob i mean
10:04
i've i'm sure you've heard these stories
10:06
where people move away
10:08
um their their dog gets lost and somehow
10:10
the dog ends up finding them wherever
10:13
they are
10:15
i don't know how they do that but i
10:16
think it's sort of like the same thing
10:18
they have this innate
10:19
ability to know where they belong and
10:21
where they're supposed to go back to i
10:22
know with our little one i don't know
10:24
christopher's in here but the little one
10:26
we're always so afraid he's going to get
10:28
out and then he's just going to take off
10:30
that we found him running on a freeway
10:32
but what we found out is yes he might
10:35
get out but guess what he comes back
10:37
he's coming but he's gotten out and come
10:39
back to us so i think
10:41
it's exactly what you're saying it is
10:43
you
10:44
know and recently there was another one
10:47
i think it was a cat and somehow they
10:49
moved from
10:50
new york to like arizona the cat got
10:53
lost but apparently took like a country
10:55
trek
10:56
he ended up getting picked up by
10:58
somebody but they they drove him to the
11:00
house and the cat the cat literally was
11:01
on his way to arizona to meet up with
11:04
his family um
11:06
i don't know the exact distance you know
11:08
but it was that kind of thing like they
11:09
went from one side the other and the
11:10
cat's like sure all you
11:12
know yeah it's an interesting type of
11:15
deal and i know if you want to throw the
11:16
books up because one of the
11:19
guys that i really want to talk about uh
11:21
james harriott so he passed away
11:22
recently but he actually was a
11:24
veterinarian in england i know if you
11:26
ever heard of the um all creatures great
11:28
and small
11:30
but it i became a pbs show which i
11:32
believe is still on and it's a
11:33
long-running uh miniseries
11:35
but it basically covers his stories as a
11:38
vet
11:39
and what it meant to you know care for
11:42
animals so i decided two of the uh books
11:45
i loved were cat stories and dog stories
11:47
because
11:48
who doesn't love you know that but i
11:50
wanted to bring him up specifically
11:52
because he
11:53
um
11:54
being in the veterinary position being a
11:57
animal worker
11:59
he knows the ins and outs of
12:03
how they tick what they do what they
12:06
need
12:06
and the fact that he was able to use his
12:08
science but also his personal because i
12:11
believe this guy lived on a farm over
12:13
there he had you know horses at some
12:15
point he had you know pigs cows whatever
12:18
um
12:19
he
12:19
[Music]
12:21
you know he knew what it was and then of
12:23
course uh funny farm uh krista actually
12:25
downloaded on her kindle and again this
12:28
lady
12:29
lives with 600 rescue animals and you
12:32
can see you know sheeps and chickens and
12:34
you know so it's
12:36
it's an interesting dynamic but for me
12:39
and you know this because i grew up
12:40
loving them
12:41
it never was a weird dynamic because for
12:44
me i always looked at non versus human
12:46
creatures that's kind of the same thing
12:48
we all you know we all need there to
12:49
breathe we all need food to eat or you
12:51
know our bodies work similarly so to me
12:55
when i found out that people wrote like
12:56
this and there was these authors these
12:58
veterinarians these people you know all
13:00
these guys
13:01
i was like okay so people kind of get it
13:04
now let's just kind of like you know and
13:07
then i was gonna bring up we talked
13:08
about the zoos reserves nowadays where
13:10
you can actually go and see you know i
13:12
think there's one by us in palm springs
13:13
a wolf one and it's wolves that you know
13:16
somebody thought was a good pet
13:18
obviously it wasn't and now it's
13:19
basically an entire reserve full of
13:21
wolves that can't go back to the you
13:23
know the wild
13:24
but the fact that you can go and see
13:26
them up close it gives you that aw it
13:28
gives you that like
13:30
you know you don't get to do that
13:31
regularly you're not nobody's lucky
13:33
enough to see these animals because
13:35
they're they're um what do you call
13:36
they're they're independent they like to
13:38
hide
13:39
that was like also um the uh animal uh
13:43
park in um san diego that's associated
13:46
with the zoo
13:48
and i mean
13:50
it's kind of cool you can go and you can
13:52
you know take the little trains and the
13:53
little
13:54
and i think you can stay overnight and
13:55
we have it here too the living desert
13:57
where you can go
14:00
and what's really cool about them and i
14:02
know we've talked about this on another
14:04
show um is that they are very much
14:06
disability inclusive
14:08
right
14:09
and the one that's here so that
14:11
obviously was important to us because we
14:13
do you know show about mining mental
14:15
health so there's so many different
14:16
places i think that are showing us that
14:18
animals are so important in our life and
14:20
we can actually experience it very cool
14:22
and then of course the last one this one
14:24
is is for kids but there's many versions
14:26
of unlikely friendships and this one is
14:28
the proof if you need it that they are
14:30
just like us when it comes to forming
14:32
bonds and
14:35
i'm sure dad's watched this before
14:36
national geographic has the unlikely
14:38
friendship show
14:40
and it's you know you have elephants and
14:42
dogs you have um you know lions and
14:45
um
14:47
what actually the funniest video was
14:49
there's a guy and i think he's going to
14:50
reserve he has two uh dachshunds and
14:53
they run into the lion cage and they
14:55
play with the lion because this lion
14:57
grew up around them and they think
15:00
they're lying with them you know and
15:01
it's one of those things and it's funny
15:03
to watch and then you just go
15:04
i don't know
15:06
but like here they are it's this big cat
15:08
versus you know so i think generally the
15:11
endorphins you know
15:13
when you're taught endorphins you're
15:15
thinking okay it's got to be happy happy
15:17
happy i think the endorphins here are
15:20
if the
15:21
book the story the article whatever
15:23
gives you
15:31
and i think you know i said i'll say it
15:33
a million times but i think really you
15:35
know and it might maybe it's not just me
15:37
obviously you many people would agree
15:39
the best kind of story to give you those
15:42
feels
15:43
is
15:44
something cute you know a cute story
15:46
and what's cuter than
15:48
you know fuzzy feathery
15:50
whatever
15:52
there is nothing cuter nothing cuter
15:54
than that um
15:58
i'm like really disappointed because my
16:00
dog is normally here i don't know where
16:01
he went but he's not here
16:03
um i put i put a link to
16:06
in the chat for anyone that would like
16:08
to go check out some of these books that
16:10
we were just talking about
16:12
um so check it out down in the chat um
16:15
any last minute things that we want to
16:17
talk about in terms of how animals make
16:19
us feel it's not just the books i mean
16:21
obviously the books kind of get
16:23
encapsulated but
16:25
how how how we feel when when we have an
16:28
animal in our life i mean you know
16:30
science has shown that petting i think a
16:32
dog or cat for what five minutes or so
16:35
can you know lower your blood pressure
16:38
can
16:39
relieve stress can
16:41
you know like you were saying if you're
16:42
feeling bad you can kind of lift your
16:44
spirits so science has proven that just
16:46
being around them
16:48
is 50
16:49
of the the health of your you know
16:52
physical mental what what have you um
16:56
i would say you know yes i know some
16:58
people you know they might be allergic
17:00
they might not be able to and i
17:01
understand that uh but i would say you
17:03
know if you're thinking of getting one
17:04
definitely adopt i always say adopt shop
17:06
you know personally um everybody i know
17:08
has gotten their pet from somebody who
17:10
maybe had litter or maybe they went to
17:12
the shelter um but if you can have an
17:15
animal and you're living in a place
17:16
where they allow them doesn't have to be
17:18
big i mean you know you can get a little
17:20
uh little fish maybe a little a little
17:22
turtle
17:24
that kind of fits your
17:25
your your life standards uh there's a
17:28
hilarious petco commercial uh you know
17:30
and they use the song from oliver i do
17:32
anything for you
17:34
and it shows just people loving their
17:35
dog one lady's walking hi taking a hike
17:37
with her dog in a backpack one kid built
17:40
a hamster thing in his house with a
17:42
billion how did what make you feel
17:44
looking at it and they think that's
17:45
important it always makes me smile
17:47
because it's just like exactly oh my god
17:49
these guys are are crazy and hilarious
17:51
but this is that's what you do when you
17:53
have a you know a family member so i
17:55
would just say you know if you can
17:58
uh and you and you're interested get get
18:00
yourself a buddy get yourself a little
18:02
friend um you know if you want something
18:04
low-key maybe like a little bird or a
18:07
little fish if you want something more
18:08
active like you're saying you know a dog
18:11
even cats i mean people walk their cats
18:13
now
18:14
crazy but i've seen it actually i worked
18:16
at a mall once and somebody walked their
18:18
cat through the mall and i was like what
18:20
that
18:20
you know
18:21
but you know it's great and then as i
18:23
said if you can't do that now pick up
18:24
some of the books the books are a great
18:26
way to kind of get you in a good
18:29
mood it's kind of like that the holiday
18:31
feeling wrapped up into a story um
18:34
but we want to caution people you know
18:36
of buying buying a pet
18:39
without really understanding
18:41
right what goes into having an animal i
18:44
and i'm only bringing that up i know i
18:45
think this month nbc is doing in the
18:48
news station nbc is doing a adopt all
18:50
the dogs out of the the pounds in in the
18:53
community
18:54
and a lot of these dogs unfortunately or
18:57
our cats were adopted during the
19:00
pandemic
19:01
and they took all these dogs in and they
19:03
you know they're gonna have a pet
19:04
because they're stuck at home
19:06
and now they're not at home anymore and
19:08
so they're unfortunately turning them
19:10
back i mean when i think about stuff
19:12
like that i think how could it's like a
19:13
household member you don't turn your
19:15
child back you don't turn i mean i'm
19:17
sure there are parents
19:20
right but i i find it uh you know so i
19:23
think um yeah definitely go and adopt
19:25
you know we've rescued ours i i can't
19:27
even imagine having a dog that i i
19:29
bought and no offense anybody out there
19:31
that's if that's what you do that's
19:32
great you're giving an animal a home but
19:35
if at all possible i know both of us
19:37
encourage you go out
19:39
adopt rescue do something you know save
19:42
it save an animal basically save an
19:44
animal uh guys if you're tuning in and
19:46
want to know how you want to follow
