today i am welcoming ann collins to the
0:27
show
0:28
anne's education is from life and from
0:31
the ohio state university she has
0:33
professional experience
0:35
management sales marketing development
0:37
and indiana politics
0:39
in fact in 2016 anne ran from
0:43
monroe county indiana treasurer
0:46
anne enjoys writing however it doesn't
0:48
come easy her book began as a journaling
0:50
exercise towards healing when she lost
0:52
her campaign
0:54
and knows that the power of writing has
0:56
given her hope through loss and she
0:58
encourages her readers
1:00
to engage in journaling as a way to
1:01
express subconscious feelings and
1:04
ultimately work through the difficult
1:05
spots in their lives
1:07
recently married and i mean recently
1:10
like a month ago uh
1:12
she now has seven adult children and
1:15
four grandchildren so without further
1:17
ado
1:17
welcome to the show anne hi everyone
1:22
so one month ago you got married and you
1:25
now
1:26
have lots of kids you have a wonderful
1:27
hubby who i know is sitting right there
1:29
with you
1:30
so we just say hi to barry i'm glad that
1:32
you're here
1:34
for anne um today our conversation is on
1:37
your book
1:38
hope loss in courage i love the name
1:41
and i love how you actually named the
1:43
book
1:45
about what you went through in order
1:48
to get through that situation of not
1:50
winning the election so first let's just
1:52
start from the beginning tell us a
1:54
little bit about yourself
1:55
your background and how you came to be
1:57
here today
2:00
well like you said in the introduction
2:02
i've done
2:03
a lot of different things and kind of a
2:06
jill of all trades
2:08
an expert of none um
2:11
but i've always i've always been a very
2:13
uh people person
2:14
and i love to encourage people i love to
2:17
motivate them
2:18
help them and that's where the writing
2:21
and the book came from
2:23
and writing is new to me but i
2:27
so enjoy it so especially when you see
2:29
that face
2:31
on someone that smile or eye contact
2:36
and it's always fun to also see your
2:38
book in the bookstore or on online right
2:41
i'm a public author which is great so i
2:44
normally like to ask my authors how long
2:46
you've been writing but clearly you have
2:48
not been writing
2:48
that long in fact this is your first
2:50
book and it just came out
2:52
so how long ago did you start on this
2:55
well i started thinking about writing i
2:58
should say
2:59
thinking uh after the election
3:02
uh in 2016 it takes me a while like i
3:06
mentioned in the book
3:07
there was a lot there that i had
3:11
kind of worked through um
3:14
but when i started to think about what i
3:17
went through
3:18
and how i learned a different way of
3:21
just trying to look at myself
3:23
more positively i knew other people
3:26
could use that too
3:27
so let's talk about what the book is
3:30
about
3:31
what will people read when they open up
3:33
your book and the inspiration i know is
3:35
from the election but i'm sure it wasn't
3:37
just the election you pulled from all
3:38
facets of your life so what's the book
3:40
about the book is about
3:46
a struggle and maybe something that you
3:50
just
3:50
know you are going to win you're going
3:53
to do great
3:54
and you and then you don't
3:58
your face and
4:01
that's what the book's about and how i
4:04
learned
4:04
to look not at the actual falling on the
4:08
face
4:09
but to actually look at all of
4:12
the the experiences that led to that day
4:16
where
4:16
i fell on my face and that's how i
4:20
figured out each one of those
4:23
experiences
4:25
actually was a win because i met
4:28
somebody
4:29
i encouraged somebody i learned
4:31
something
4:33
all kinds of things and i think the
4:35
message because you've said it now
4:37
several times
4:37
already in in the short time that we've
4:39
been talking you fell on your face you
4:42
fell on your phone so
4:44
i it would it be fair to say that the
4:46
message in the book is
4:48
even if you fall on your face yes
4:51
there is there is hope and there is a
4:54
way to come
4:54
out of that is that your inspiration is
4:56
to be able to help people
4:58
yes it is because i think obviously the
5:01
older you get the more experiences you
5:03
go through
5:04
you realize that experiences are very
5:07
valuable whether they were pleasant or
5:10
not
5:11
because you've met somebody you've
5:14
learned
5:14
something you've experienced an emotion
5:18
and all that stuff is for us to grow and
5:22
to learn
5:23
and i just want to help people
5:27
kind of look at the positive side of
5:28
some of the things that aren't so
5:30
positive
5:31
and i think that's so important um in in
5:34
in every day and every time but
5:36
especially in this time i think that's
5:38
so
5:39
important you say that winning is
5:41
finding the wins
5:42
in everything you consider to defeat and
5:45
using these to move forward would this
5:47
be a good example
5:49
yes um and i i think
5:52
uh my book is not a political book but i
5:55
think it's actually
5:57
uh would be a good encourager
6:00
just because of you know life in general
6:03
the world with covid we have to kind of
6:06
look at things differently and
6:08
and find the value we do i'm getting a
6:11
message that
6:12
somebody's saying the timing on the
6:13
video is way off i'm going to ask you to
6:15
do something right now and it's going to
6:16
sound really bizarre
6:18
but right next to where you put the url
6:20
in there's a little
6:21
way to refresh your browser can you go
6:23
ahead and just refresh
6:24
the browser do you see that little
6:26
circle to the side of the url
6:29
because i have a feeling that and i'm
6:31
going to do the same thing so buck
6:33
thanks for letting us know we're going
6:34
to go in and come out so
6:36
did you find that refresher okay go
6:39
ahead and oh i refreshed it yeah
6:41
i think well it would take you out of
6:44
the show
6:44
so here we go we're going to go and i'll
6:46
be right back here we go
6:57
and we're back um so
7:00
we have somebody who's watching and buck
7:01
was saying that the timing was off
7:03
and i'm not and now we just lost
7:07
anne so i'm gonna wait for her to come
7:11
back
7:11
in and
7:17
and here she is
7:24
and you're going to have turn your
7:25
camera back on
7:34
and she's back here we go
7:37
all right so hopefully the timing is
7:39
better on this um
7:40
so we were talking about using our
7:44
our our wins to
7:48
take care of the defeats right that when
7:50
finding the winds
7:51
in everything that we considered if
7:54
you're just tuning in we're talking to
7:56
ann collins about her book hope loss
7:59
encouraged
8:00
so obviously we've already talked about
8:02
hope loss and encouraged
8:04
is that what where did you come up with
8:05
this title it's a really great title
8:08
well thank you um i think
8:12
we all need a little hope and i
8:15
the word lost is because every human
8:18
being
8:18
on the face of this earth is going to go
8:21
through
8:22
a loss you can get through life without
8:25
it and
8:26
encourage with the emphasis
8:29
on courage because you need to encourage
8:33
others based on what you've learned in
8:35
life but
8:36
also sometimes it takes a lot of courage
8:40
to stand up and keep going absolutely
8:44
absolutely um what do you hope
8:48
your readers are going to take away from
8:50
this book
8:52
well i think it's it's more than just a
8:55
um
8:55
interesting read it's a short read i
8:58
think there's some humor into it
9:00
um so it's it's a fun read
9:04
but i hope these they can see throughout
9:06
the book the process
9:08
of you know and it could have been
9:10
something that happened a week ago
9:13
or five years ago but how you can
9:16
actually
9:16
process that experience in your mindset
9:20
and look at that loss or
9:23
failure or mistake and actually find a
9:26
win in it
9:29
so you say i am only one
9:32
but i am one what does that mean
9:37
well i think a lot of us use
9:40
i am only one person and use that as an
9:43
excuse
9:43
an excuse well i can't
9:47
cure cancer i can't feed the entire
9:50
world so i shouldn't
9:52
do anything because it doesn't matter
9:54
right um
9:56
but it really does because i can
9:58
influence one person
10:00
feed one person uh
10:04
you know help one person and that
10:07
changes
10:08
the world it does it really does and
10:11
it sounds like that's something that's
10:12
really important to you
10:14
that you do want to change the world so
10:16
the question begs to be
10:18
asked are you going to run for office
10:19
again no
10:22
and i hear your your husband in the
10:24
background no
10:26
not not going to do that at all
10:29
i ran in 2016 and then i ran again in
10:32
2018 for another position
10:35
and um and i lost that one also
10:38
so i think i will just add to the
10:42
the world and the environment a
10:44
different way hey that's fair
10:46
that that's totally fair if you're
10:48
tuning in and you want to know a little
10:50
bit more about this book
10:51
hope loss encourage that is the name of
10:54
the book you can see it on the screen
10:56
and i've just put a link to the book in
10:58
the comments
10:59
uh for you to go pick up a copy because
11:01
i think that this is really i love first
11:03
of all i love the the subtitle
11:05
scenes from life's wins that's exactly
11:07
what you're talking about
11:08
um and i think this is important for all
11:11
of us i i don't think that there's a
11:12
single person on
11:14
this planet that has not had a defeat in
11:16
something
11:17
and i think the trick is to figure out
11:21
how to turn it around and make it a win
11:23
and and it sounds like that is exactly
11:25
what you have done
11:26
with this book why do you do what you do
11:30
i mean why did you run for office why
11:32
did you just i mean i know why you
11:34
decided to write a book it took you
11:35
through your journey but
11:37
why are you doing what you're doing and
11:39
are you going to write another book
11:42
yes uh it's actually about done so book
11:46
number two will be out soon
11:47
congratulations
11:48
um i do what i do because
11:53
again we're all on this earth for a
11:55
short period of time
11:56
and i want to make that time
12:00
memorable i want to help others
12:05
if i can encourage people that makes me
12:07
feel good
12:09
and then i know my life made a
12:11
difference
12:13
so is writing books for everyone what
12:15
would you tell someone if they'd said
12:17
you know i had this thing going on and i
12:19
think this makes sense for me i'm going
12:21
to write a book what would you tell
12:22
somebody who wants to go write a book
12:25
i'd say get started and do it
12:27
for several reasons uh through
12:30
journaling
12:31
and writing this first book that's what
12:35
showed me that writing is powerful
12:38
and i don't think or at least i didn't
12:41
know before
12:42
i did this writing is very powerful
12:46
um emotional mentoring
12:49
cathartic maybe yes and it's actually
12:53
somewhat physical i've noticed when i've
12:55
gone back into my journals
12:58
there you could actually see how hard i
13:01
was writing
13:02
usually when i was upset or angry
13:05
about something but you literally can
13:09
see the difference of the pressure of
13:11
the pen
13:11
on the journals so if you want to write
13:14
a book
13:15
get started now because it may take
13:18
uh six weeks it may take six years but
13:22
it's valuable time for yourself
13:25
because you are very important
13:28
absolutely absolutely well
13:29
i think that's great i think it's great
13:31
before the show went live i said to you
13:33
um
13:34
do you have a super power and i i grab
13:37
my little
13:38
you know my little uh wonder woman and
13:41
my super powers i'm fearless i will do
13:44
almost anything
13:44
just just ask what's your superpower
13:50
oh so uh you cut out just a little bit
13:54
but um i would say my uh superpower
13:58
is to encourage and that's not only
14:01
encouraging myself
14:02
that's encouraging others and
14:06
doing all i can that way so buck says
14:08
nice twist to the title he loved the
14:10
title one of the hardest things is to
14:12
find the courage to move forward after
14:13
any type of loss thank you
14:17
thank you for the comment would you
14:18
agree yes
14:21
because as i say in the book there there
14:24
were
14:24
there was a short time where i just i
14:26
didn't want to come out
14:30
i'm sure you know i i i've never run for
14:33
office i've never done
14:34
any of that kind of stuff but there have
14:35
been times i'm a singer where
14:37
i've done something and and afterwards
14:39
it's like
14:41
it was no good it was not good but you
14:43
have to have to find a way to come back
14:44
out of it and you have to just uh put
14:47
that smile and
14:48
and and and move forward right and and
14:50
do it again back get back on that so you
14:52
did run again
14:53
but instead of but instead of running a
14:55
third time now you're just going to keep
14:56
writing those books
14:58
which i think is awesome which i think
15:00
is awesome
15:01
for those of you who are wondering how
15:02
to stay in touch
15:04
with anne we're going to give you some
15:06
uh places to go because she's everywhere
15:08
you can go visit anne on her website at
15:12
authorannecollins.com
15:14
uh she's also on facebook and you can
15:16
find her on facebook at
15:17
author anne collins and
15:20
she's also on youtube at ann collins
15:24
imagine that and on instagram you can
15:27
also find her there at
15:28
author ann collins and finally on
15:30
linkedin if you go to linkedin it's and
15:32
dash
15:33
collins so what's one tip that you can
15:37
share
15:38
that comes out of your life that has
15:39
really made a difference in your life
15:40
that you can share with our audience
15:42
what's a tip you can share
15:44
um the one tip i would tell people is
15:47
to take that time with themselves
15:51
personally uh doesn't have to be a quiet
15:55
space that
15:57
don't be closing your eyes while you're
15:58
driving but
16:02
i i think it's uh mentally emotionally
16:06
important and as a
16:08
as the mindset you can look at something
16:11
that didn't work
16:12
out and really find the value in it and
16:15
then
16:17
life is a little different because i've
16:19
fallen on my face so many times now that
16:21
i'm really not afraid of it anymore
16:24
um interesting and is that what you
16:27
think
16:28
will happen when people just kind of you
16:30
know step into that
16:31
and step into their their their wins
16:33
from their defeats
16:35
yes i mean even like a bad day at the
16:37
shop
16:38
i will maybe not be in the best
16:41
mood but i will look at that day
16:44
and say this is an experience i am going
16:47
to meet someone i am learning something
16:50
and so it just makes it easier to get
16:54
through the day get through the day
16:55
happy
16:56
and just know that there is a win from
16:59
every day
17:01
i i love that um again i'm going to put
17:03
the book right back into the screen one
17:05
more time so people can go get a copy of
17:07
it hope loss encourage scenes from
17:09
life's
17:09
wins by ann collins the link is sitting
17:12
in
17:13
the uh comment area right now so you can
17:16
go take a look at it over there
17:18
i want to again thank has mark
17:19

17:23
we just love them over there um and i
17:26

17:27

17:31
read the book i have it on order
17:32
actually and it's on its way to me
17:34
so i can't dive into the book any
17:37
last-minute thoughts you want to share
17:38
with everyone before we
17:40
say goodbye um
17:44
just uh step back and look at your life
17:47
and find find the beauty in it because
17:50
it's there
17:51
it is it is definitely there i want to
17:53
thank our our
17:54
guest anne for being on the show today
17:56
