0:00
I know how to have it all but maybe not
0:02
at the same time we'll stay tuned
0:03
because that is the topic that we are
0:05
discussing today on this episode of the
0:08
little white lie hello everyone it's
0:10
Karin Glasser and I am beyond excited
0:13
about today's show because this is a
0:15
show that actually got delayed from six
0:16
weeks ago and we've got her back and I'm
0:19
I'm going to say your name until we're
0:20
ready to introduce her but before we do
0:22
that this is the little white lie if
0:24
you're here on replay we're delighted
0:26
you're here on replay make sure you make
0:27
a comment in the comments below and
0:29
we'll come back and respond back to you
0:30
when the show is over if you're here
0:33
live oh my gosh we're so excited you're
0:35
here live because we know that you have
0:36
a choice and we're happy you chose to be
0:38
with us today we would love for you to
0:41
share the show it's just a shameless
0:42
plug go get that share button share it
0:44
out make sure that all of your network
0:46
knows that we're on right now and when
0:49
you're sharing it out make sure you use
0:51
the hashtag LW l stands for little white
0:54
lie so today the question is how to have
0:58
it all just maybe not at the same time
1:01
and who better then my closest closest
1:04
friend from over I wanting to say how
1:06
many years oh my gosh I think it's like
1:07
40 or 35 30 oh my gosh
1:10
we're old but Joe Ryan she's amazing
1:13
she's gonna be on the show today she is
1:15
the winner of the Broadway world's
1:17
cabaret artist of the year which is a
1:20
huge huge honor her for octave range
1:23
that means her voice she sings in 4
1:25
octaves has led to numerous leading
1:27
roles including Lana's and Little Shop
1:30
of Horrors and Joseph and the Amazing
1:32
Technicolor Dreamcoat and Foot Lowe's I
1:34
mean literally the list goes on and on
1:36
and you may have actually seen her for
1:39
the many years that she was on Saved by
1:41
the Bell she's played the the role of
1:43
Judy Denmark ginger delmarco and also
1:47
actually that doesn't that's not from
1:49
the show that actually is from the Los
1:52
Angeles production of rootless she was
1:54
actually in the show she opened that
1:57
show so in addition to that in addition
2:00
to that you might have seen her in a
2:01
most recent movie as Patricia from the
2:04
feature film hot guys with guns yeah
2:08
really hot guys with guns so without
2:10
further ado I'm gonna go ahead and bring
2:13
how are you hi I'm so excited to be here
2:17
well I I don't know who's more excited
2:19
you or me we've been talking about this
2:21
for for a long long time and we really
2:23
have known each other right for a lot of
2:25
years a very long time I'd say a long
2:29
time yeah look and we actually met
2:32
singing and that is actually how we
2:34
connected singing and then fast-forward
2:37
many many many many years we reconnected
2:40
again when I was singing at a synagogue
2:42
as a cantor as a religious leader and
2:44
you and I started singing again together
2:46
and I mean the rest is history quite
2:49
going right and and before we even go
2:51
into the show I'm really excited to
2:52
announce we have a song the theme song
2:55
for the little white lie and recording
2:58
this I cannot wait to be in the studio
3:00
with you and we're gonna do some other
3:02
recording - yes we're gonna be doing a
3:04
lot of other recording so I'm really
3:05
really excited that you're here on the
3:07
show and what I like to do even before
3:08
we start with the topic is to ask you
3:10
John Ryan yeah is war little white lie
3:13
well that Karen Glasser is a great
3:16
question because I was thinking about
3:18
that and I think my little white lie I I
3:22
know that my little white lie was
3:24
something that I actually told myself
3:25
all the years that my children were
3:28
growing up I would be auditioning for
3:32
things in New York I live here in Los
3:33
Angeles so I'd be auditioning for shows
3:35
in New York and quite frankly I didn't
3:37
really want a show in New York I was
3:41
very happy with my career that way it
3:42
was in LA so that I could raise my
3:44
children and and I would kill myself for
3:47
these auditions but I heard many years
3:49
ago that if you don't have a result in a
3:52
particular area then it's really not
3:56
something you want right and the little
3:59
road the little white light was really
4:00
what I told myself is that I wanted this
4:02
way bigger career and the truth was I
4:04
knew that this time would come that my
4:07
kids would be out of the house I'd be
4:09
able to go do what I needed to do I
4:10
always knew that but I think there was a
4:13
part of me that was embarrassed to say
4:15
that I love my family I love being a mom
4:18
and I didn't want to go too far I
4:20
totally understand yeah yeah and I
4:23
really understand that but but speaking
4:25
of somebody who understands your talent
4:27
how amazing you really are and all the
4:29
things that you've done i can i am
4:31
excited for this next part of your life
4:34
so I mean the question is can you have
4:37
it all or do you should you wait til
4:39
later what do you I think you can one
4:41
can absolutely have it all I think we
4:43
all have a pilot light inside of us
4:45
whether it's to be a nurse or a
4:49
performer I think whatever we wanted
4:52
when we were little never really goes
4:54
we're Anna what I did is all that I did
4:57
work the whole time my kids you know I
4:59
did sing I did act but I didn't really
5:01
take it to the heights that I thought I
5:03
wanted when I was little ie New York so
5:07
yes you can have it all but you have to
5:09
do certain things I never stopped
5:11
training I always kept myself together I
5:16
kept my chops up I always worked and
5:18
took care of myself so that when the
5:21
time came I would be ready and so now
5:24
that my kids are gone ostensibly we're
5:30
laughing because we know that they're
5:32
not all gone they're not all gone they
5:33
are home now and I am gone but isn't
5:39
that interesting you you know you go
5:40
into that empty nest syndrome and then
5:42
the kids come home and who goes it's the
5:44
mom and dad they leave right well it was
5:47
very funny because my agents wanted me
5:50
to come to New York this last October
5:51
both of my children were going to be out
5:54
of the house in September and in August
5:56
they both called and asked that they
5:58
could come home that they you know
6:00
needed a little boost and could they
6:01
come home and my husband I said of
6:02
course so they're home and for a brief
6:05
second I thought about maybe now is not
6:08
the time and I have an amazing husband
6:11
which helps and he said oh no you are
6:13
going this is your dream it is your turn
6:15
you are going so they sent me with notes
6:18
in my suitcase to my little apartment in
6:20
New York and they come and visit quite a
6:22
bit so it's really been an incredible
6:23
journey what an amazing experience
6:26
though that here you are at a certain
6:28
age you know no matter what the age is
6:30
but now that now that you're embarking
6:33
on this new journey that you're on it's
6:36
part of an extension of the old journey
6:38
but a new journey and
6:39
any respects and I know that you have
6:41
some exciting news that we're going to
6:43
share this afternoon as well yeah you're
6:45
gonna you have a concert that's
6:47
scheduled in the middle of next year and
6:48
I know you have a date and where is that
6:50
concert gonna be Joni it just happens to
6:52
be a Carnegie Hall the series of events
6:59
I'm I decided that well I've got to
7:02
speed things up if I'm going to New York
7:04
now I don't really have a lot of time so
7:05
I called friends of ours who are these
7:08
incredible people that started an
7:10
organization called Shane's inspiration
7:12
that builds playgrounds for kids with
7:15
all over the world Wow and there is not
7:17
one in New York so I thought well this
7:19
is the perfect opportunity we will do a
7:21
wonderful benefit I'll bring in my
7:23
celebrity friends we'll have a tiny
7:25
little benefit and I'll be in it and
7:28
voila voila when I brought it up to my
7:31
friends they said well we just happened
7:33
to be working with Carnegie Hall so what
7:36
do you think about that both over April
7:39
just said oh yeah just little old
7:41
Carnegie Hall that's right so I love
7:43
that I have those things that might not
7:45
have happened had I not taken the risk
7:47
right one of the things that I as I'm
7:50
very well very very excited and we're
7:51
just um solidifying who else is going to
7:54
be in it it's gonna be an amazing event
7:56
and it's May 21st more to come but and
8:01
the end result will be that it's not
8:03
just about me we're actually gonna raise
8:05
the funds to build a playground in New
8:07
York and that's where our founders are
8:09
from oh I love that my daughter just
8:12
chimed in yay mommy see I'm the luckiest
8:14
we're just gonna put Kelsey up there
8:16
yeah and mommy isn't this great though
8:19
that's an example I mean here you are an
8:21
example to all families you're a woman
8:24
who has oh you're following your dream
8:27
and your kids are supporting you you're
8:31
young adult kids are not kids anymore
8:32
but they're supporting this journey of
8:34
you as well it is it is very very cool
8:37
and it's Kelsey's that's my mom that is
8:41
totally and and we've got April going
8:42
this is that this is so so amazing and I
8:44
know you guys so it this this
8:47
organization Shane's inspiration
8:51
is this the first playground or they
8:53
done a lot of different playgrounds or
8:54
playgrounds the original story is I was
8:57
pregnant with my now 24 year old
9:00
daughter Kelly and I were friends with
9:03
Katharine and Scott were pregnant at the
9:05
same time and unfortunately when their
9:07
baby was born the baby Shane passed away
9:10
within two weeks of childbirth but they
9:13
took their grief they're remarkable
9:15
people along with Tiffany Harris who is
9:17
also the founder rad Thornton is also
9:19
the head of development they took this
9:21
horrifying painful experience and they
9:25
raised the money to build their first
9:26
playground ah now there are over 60 I
9:30
believe all over the world including
9:32
Russia Israel Australia Oh
9:35
Thank You Rebecca Barker Oh Thank You
9:38
Dona your family are a dream I know and
9:41
I attest to that yes they are and so
9:44
there is not one in New York so it all
9:48
works perfectly when I called them and
9:50
they said em there's none in New York so
9:52
what turned out to it with a little
9:54
benefit because everything is working
9:57
the way it should it's it's going to be
9:58
you know and I think about it at night
10:01
and I think about that I might have a
10:02
part in having a playground for these
10:04
amazing children that just makes it all
10:07
worth it so excited about that and I
10:11
want to bring this home I didn't want to
10:12
say group though April having a
10:15
special-needs child myself I thank you
10:17
from the bottom of my heart and what you
10:19
are doing to bring happiness to special
10:21
needs families and April thank you and I
10:24
know how much that is heartfelt and she
10:26
because she does have a special needs
10:28
kids and and what you're doing is it's
10:30
so wonderful besides the fact that so
10:32
many people are gonna have the
10:33
opportunity to hear your gorgeous voice
10:35
and as well as the other talent that's
10:38
that's going to be there so I guess what
10:40
you're saying is is that we probably can
10:43
have it all but not necessarily at the
10:45
same time then you want me so what kind
10:46
of hints or tricks or tips might you
10:49
suggest who are viewing and listening
10:51
audience maybe if they're thinking I've
10:54
got a family I've got all these kids I
10:56
have these dreams what am I supposed to
10:58
do any any thoughts in terms of your
11:00
journey that that could be helpful to
11:02
others well I think first
11:05
first and foremost is what is the most
11:07
important to you first that's the first
11:09
thing if the most important to you I
11:11
know when I I wanted to have my kids to
11:15
me that was the most important uh and I
11:18
had a career at the time but I was
11:20
willing to put my career on hold certain
11:22
things you can't have at the same time
11:25
you can't wait till you're 50 years old
11:26
to have a baby so if that's your
11:29
priority you have to do that knowing
11:30
that the rest will follow but for me my
11:34
kids and my family were my priority
11:37
although I didn't just stay home for me
11:40
and I needed to sing I needed to do I
11:44
needed to act I needed to do that but
11:46
when it came to going to a Halloween
11:48
parade that was my priority I still
11:52
appreciate that about you thank you so
11:55
it's all about priorities it's not that
11:56
it didn't sometimes you know it wasn't
11:59
hard for me when I would do a show with
12:00
all Tony winners but I said okay well
12:03
you know for me so I think the first
12:05
thing is one's priority what is your
12:07
priority and sometimes you don't even
12:09
have to in like I didn't know that I was
12:11
really turning things down because I
12:12
didn't want to leave somewhere and there
12:16
there was that voice that's I'm actually
12:21
laughing at this right now so I think
12:23
that um Howard your hubby is what does
12:27
Michelle sees Facebook that was from me
12:30
Howard Howard we love you
12:33
so you're here to tell us you're you're
12:37
here to tell us that that that we can we
12:39
can do this but then you have to say but
12:42
you but in my case it really was knowing
12:46
that in knowing that there would be a
12:48
time that I would be able to do that
12:50
knowing that there would be able to have
12:52
so as I said before I trained I kept
12:54
myself in shape I kept my voice in shape
12:56
I didn't let it all fall apart
12:58
however I still think that it's never
13:05
too late cuz truthfully where are we
13:06
going hopefully nowhere right now I'm
13:09
gonna be the same age I am in ten years
13:11
that I'm gonna be if I wasn't doing this
13:13
does that make sense
13:14
it's a Miley totally
13:17
and that is part of what the little
13:18
white lie is all about is that there are
13:20
no limitations or there is no maximum or
13:23
minimum date or age that you're supposed
13:25
to do something other than maybe having
13:26
a baby at 50 you may not want to do
13:30
ages and attitude age is not a limiting
13:32
factor it is only that lie that we tell
13:34
us that somehow we think that we can't
13:36
do something right and that we can do
13:38
what we want what we want and need and
13:40
desire to do if we just stay focused and
13:44
we just keep our eye on the endgame
13:46
right yeah exactly and it's just about
13:49
compartmentalizing like they right it's
13:51
about compartmentalizing and if you
13:52
compartmentalize then I mean I don't
13:56
know that I could go to medical school
13:58
right now because that takes too long
13:59
and I would be 100 but no but this is
14:07
it definitely is oh I'm just so I'm
14:10
really excited so you got Carnegie Hall
14:11
coming up which is I'm not making light
14:14
of that that's huge Carnegie Hall and
14:16
the date again is May 21st makers in the
14:19
future but I will have my own show in
14:22
I'm not exactly sure of the date but
14:24
it's either the first or the second week
14:27
in February all right so for our viewers
14:30
well we'll make sure to put those data
14:32
we'll make sure that people go and and
14:34
if you're in New York and you want to go
14:36
to Carnegie Hall make sure you put your
14:37
calendar date in there right now May
14:39
21st so when the tickets come out you
14:41
know that you can go and not just
14:42
support Joanie in this but support
14:44
change the iteration as well because
14:46
this is this is really a very cool cool
14:49
thing that you're doing and I'm really
14:51
I'm thrilled I'm thrilled for you
14:54
so we talked a little bit about our
14:57
history and we've sung together and
14:59
we've recorded some things a night I'm
15:01
laughing when you said well you really
15:02
that you know you get a little singing
15:03
here and there yeah you and I would sing
15:06
at the High Holy Days we would we would
15:08
do these beautiful songs to beautiful
15:09
numbers together and we're going to be
15:12
recording them because we want to put
15:13
them out there the music business is not
15:15
the same as it used to be as neck errect
15:17
that's right it's very different
15:19
everything's downloadable um but to that
15:22
what we talked about
15:23
I could sing at the Staples Center in
15:25
front of 10,000 people but singing which
15:28
I did I used to sing the star-spangled
15:31
but that was easier than singing with
15:34
you at the High Holy Days in front of
15:35
500 people yeah and I'm not exactly sure
15:38
why but it was a whole different I might
15:42
venture a guess on that and that is
15:44
because when you look out into the
15:46
congregation or the audience you
15:47
actually know the people that are
15:48
sitting there and so it's a different
15:50
environment I mean you're actually
15:51
singing to people that know you and I
15:54
think there is a difference there when I
15:56
sing in front of a bunch of people that
15:57
I don't know yeah totally yes but there
16:02
was a lot of people that I didn't know
16:05
of people that I know because there's
16:07
something about that connection and the
16:09
relationship and is able to look right
16:10
with somebody's eyes and know that
16:11
you're touching them
16:12
in a way that a stranger might not yes I
16:16
think they're me more about singing with
16:18
you that was scary at the at the
16:20
beginning was that it's how I had grown
16:22
up you know in how I had grown up in
16:26
that environment so there was just being
16:29
grown up about it I guess
16:31
absolutely I'm gonna put up here I know
16:33
that people are already destroyed I'm
16:35
getting Texas and things wanting to know
16:36
how do they find out more about you well
16:38
first of all you can write a John Ryan
16:39
site you can go to John Ryan calm very
16:42
very clear and more importantly go check
16:44
out our Facebook page at a John Ryan fan
16:47
page and it's the official isn't it the
16:49
official John Ryan on Ryan actually I
16:52
don't know why that says that but it oh
16:54
here it is we got it and it's the
16:56
official John Ryan on Instagram the
16:58
official John Ryan on Facebook and also
17:01
on Twitter right you have a Twitter
17:02
account Tom I do have a Twitter account
17:04
I don't really use it I usually use
17:05
Instagram and John Ryan I just haven't
17:08
wrap my head around what is my Twitter I
17:10
think it's the official John Ryan I - I
17:11
believe John Ryan so I want to take the
17:14
words the official John Ryan go into
17:17
Facebook put it into search and you're
17:19
gonna find your goal like her page
17:20
because a lot of good stuff is coming
17:22
out go make sure you engage with her on
17:25
Instagram as well she got right it's
17:26
great great images that you've got out
17:28
there any last-minute thoughts that
17:30
you'd like to share with our audience
17:31
about having it all you know I think it
17:36
also has to do at the risk of sounding a
17:39
little you know sappy I think it has to
17:42
do with gratitude for we
17:44
you are in the moment my mother always
17:46
used to say be where you are where you
17:48
are is where you're supposed to be and I
17:50
think that II it's not that things don't
17:54
happen and it's not that you don't have
17:55
envy that oh my god I'm not where I am
17:57
but when you get the gratitude about
17:59
being where you are and you're very
18:01
specific about where you want to go you
18:04
know sometimes you have to give up who
18:05
you were in order to become who you want
18:07
to be that's oh my gosh yes absolutely
18:12
you are a case in point can make I can
18:14
point you through many lifetimes it's
18:17
that you know we have we have been
18:18
together and I think it's also a matter
18:20
of being uncomfortable every so often
18:22
and yeah stepping into that and being
18:25
uncomfortable because only good comes
18:27
out of it and I really do believe that I
18:29
know a lot of people think well how
18:30
could it be good if I'm uncomfortable or
18:32
if it's it's it's makes me squirrely or
18:34
whatever that's actually my gauge if I'm
18:37
uncomfortable if I'm feeling kind of
18:39
about it then I know I'm on the right
18:41
track how where does that well I'll just
18:43
tell you a quick funny story the first
18:44
weekend I was in New York my whole
18:46
family was here in LA I moved to New
18:48
York and I'm in a hot sweltering
18:50
apartment this big and I was hysterical
18:54
crying on the telephone to my husband I
18:55
said this is a mistake I do not belong
18:58
I left my home what am I doing here and
19:01
he said agree that will take you a
19:03
couple of days and he was right but that
19:05
talk about uncomfortable I was miserable
19:07
but and then and look what happened the
19:10
rest happening Johnny thank you so much
19:13
for taking time out of your busy
19:14
schedule I know that you're taking off
19:16
for New York in just a couple of weeks
19:17
again and you're gonna be there and I'm
19:19
just so happy that you could squeeze us
19:20
in to be able to be on the show yours we
19:23
know that you have a choice as to how to
19:25
spend your time and we are eternally
19:27
grateful that you decided to spend it
19:29
with Joan and I today we really
19:31
appreciate that and we thank you from
19:33
the bottom of our hearts
19:34

19:36

19:39
