0:01
hello everyone karen glasser here and
0:04
welcome to the author spotlight i
0:06
welcome guests from all across the globe
0:08
who entertain wow and excite us and
0:11
today is no exception so whether you're
0:13
here live or on replay make sure to say
0:16
hi in the comments today's show is
0:19
online author's office and we thank them
0:22
today i am welcoming victoria dang to
0:26
as a self-starting entrepreneur with a
0:29
master's in education in international
0:31
teaching and as a first-time mom
0:34
victoria decided to share her stories
0:36
and wisdom with mothers across the globe
0:39
she is the ceo and founder of gomshy.com
0:43
a platform for moms where they can learn
0:45
and find support with each other she
0:48
firmly believes that being a mom entails
0:51
a lot of sacrifices but the role itself
0:53
should not overshadow your own happiness
0:56
and identity so without further ado i
1:00
bring in victoria to the show
1:05
i'm so excited right now
1:08
well i i'm maybe i'm more excited than
1:12
i am so excited for you to be on the
1:14
show first of all um we're going to be
1:16
talking about your book
1:17
and i'm just kind of picking it up
1:19
you've got your copy there too i it's
1:21
it's an awesome book it's an awesome
1:23
book and we're going to tell people how
1:24
they can go pick up a copy of it
1:28
as we go through the show so this is
1:30
your first book right
1:32
yes it's my first book so tell me about
1:34
the process uh how long did it take you
1:39
i think it took me around four months to
1:45
the process took me around
1:48
to to uh to come up with a publishable
1:50
book it took me around eight months
1:53
because in the middle of the journey i
1:55
contracted covet so i stopped for like a
1:57
month me and my son got coveted so but i
2:01
was on the middle of finishing the book
2:03
that's why if you got the copy of my
2:07
uh for the last few pages of the book i
2:11
wrote down my covet story in this book
2:13
because it also entails
2:16
my journey as a mother because you know
2:18
how hard it is to be with your son when
2:21
you're sick you know how are you gonna
2:23
take care of us a little human being if
2:25
you can't even take care of yourself so
2:27
i was in a very vulnerable position at
2:33
my my skills as a mother and my
2:35
personality as a mom and also as an
2:37
individual so yeah well and and that
2:40
makes you very much an expert to have
2:42
written this book i'm glad to see that
2:45
you are healthy and um
2:50
um you graduated laude with a degree
2:53
in foreign service major in diplomacy
2:56
and you just recently finished your med
2:58
in international teaching first of all
3:01
congratulations that is that that both
3:04
quite accomplished um but how did you go
3:08
to writing your best seller because
3:10
you're a best seller by the way by the
3:11
way she's a bestseller very cool thank
3:15
i mean being in school um getting your
3:18
degrees laude doing all of that and
3:21
now you're a best-selling author what
3:23
was that like making the transition
3:26
um it's actually pretty smooth because
3:30
at first i i'm in that position that i
3:33
don't really know what to do with my
3:35
life i've been trying many careers i've
3:37
been a flight attendant i've been in
3:39
customer service i've been a dance
3:41
teacher you know i've tried many things
3:43
in my life but writing is something that
3:46
i felt very passionate about and i'm i'm
3:50
so lucky to find it at this age and
3:53
uh being a mother actually
3:57
helped me realize my passion so yeah so
4:00
how old is your little one right now
4:06
it's a great age that is such a great
4:10
so um one of the things that when i got
4:12
information on you you you say that
4:14
you're a product of a rags to riches
4:17
story so let's talk a little bit about
4:19
that what does that mean
4:22
so i'm when i was 12 years old my father
4:27
my mother i have a twin brother and i
4:29
have two more other siblings
4:32
and my mom is the only one who you know
4:35
tried to raise us the four of us you
4:38
know made us go to school
4:40
you know uh dresses up
4:43
stories like that so we're we're
4:45
depending fully on my mom's family so
4:50
that is something that actually inspires
4:52
me to do better in school to do better
4:56
so i'm not really like
4:58
i didn't come from a rich family you
5:01
know i come from a pretty average poor
5:03
pretty average family you know maybe i
5:06
should say that because in college i
5:09
to do a lot of gigs you know
5:11
be a dance teacher on the side right
5:13
yeah you know be a model on the side be
5:16
a brand ambassador on the side you know
5:18
doing some gigs just to
5:20
uh come up with my allowance for the
5:22
week so i leave day by day when i was in
5:25
college until i graduate and i i
5:29
studied very hard to get the scholarship
5:31
that's why i graduated laude that's
5:33
how how hard-working i was to you know
5:39
is your mom an inspiration i would i
5:40
would say your mom was an inspiration of
5:43
course she's an inspiration she actually
5:46
taught me some other perspective when it
5:48
comes to motherhood she helped me a lot
5:50
during when i transitioned from you know
5:53
being pregnant to being a mom to be an
5:59
she helped me through some tough times
6:04
why did you decide to write this book i
6:08
mean with all of your education and
6:11
what made you decide that i'm going to
6:14
write but i'm going to write this book
6:16
on on motherhood what was that deciding
6:21
it's because i i took it
6:25
when i became a mother i felt alone i
6:28
felt like i needed some people to
6:31
listen to me i felt like i need some
6:35
and because of what's happening around
6:37
the world you know people stuck at home
6:38
people can see each other so people rely
6:43
read a lot online so what is what i
6:47
thought that's why i thought about
6:48
writing this book in order for my story
6:51
for my message and real problem and real
6:54
solutions to be out there to well with
6:57
the hope that i could inspire and help
6:59
other mom she's around the world so yeah
7:02
so i'm going to put up a copy of the
7:03
book right here so people can see it
7:05
while we're chatting so you decide
7:07
you're going to write this book and by
7:09
the way if you're just tuning in we're
7:10
talking to victoria deng she's the
7:12
author of the international bestseller
7:14
gomshi so let's first talk about the
7:17
what the heck is a mom she
7:20
yeah i've been saying mom she many times
7:22
but i haven't even explained what the
7:24
meaning of it okay so mom she is an
7:27
endearment here in the philippines it's
7:35
we use it here in the philippines to
7:38
to uh to call out to call or to refer to
7:42
our best friends for example even though
7:46
if you're my close friend for example
7:48
hey mom she was up like that so it's
7:52
yeah it's an environment yeah totally an
7:54
in endearment of that so you decided to
7:59
mom she so it's is this really as it's a
8:01
calling it's a call to action for moms
8:07
it's like a cheerleader
8:09
it's the book symbol it's like a i want
8:12
the book to be the cheerleader of moms
8:15
to push them and to encourage them to do
8:18
whatever they want for themselves and
8:20
for their family that's why it's go mom
8:23
she's like go mom she you can do that so
8:25
you're the cheerleader you're you are
8:27
the cheerleader yeah so
8:29
obviously you know we've talked the main
8:31
focus of the book is is for moms and
8:33
raising kids when somebody opens the
8:35
book what are they going to see in there
8:37
tell me what they're going to see
8:38
so the book is full of uh my authentic
8:41
experience as first time mom at the
8:43
first page you'll find it funny
8:46
because it's all about you know my
8:48
experience and me being naive and being
8:51
like shocked with all the experiences
8:54
um saw firsthand so you might laugh
8:58
about it but then at the end of the you
9:01
know in the middle of the book you'll
9:02
realize the realizations that i had when
9:06
i encounter those problems and also the
9:09
real-time solutions it's also a journal
9:11
by the way because oh okay
9:14
so you can write down your feelings
9:16
because i believe in the power of
9:18
journaling because writing down your
9:19
thoughts and fillings down it could help
9:22
you create a wiser decision it's a help
9:25
self-help book because
9:27
uh i know how how hard it is to be a
9:29
first-time mom or to be a mother in
9:31
general right right and sometimes we
9:34
need to fill our minds with positive
9:36
thoughts encouraging words that's why
9:39
this is a self-help book
9:41
for mom she's out there to realize
9:45
uh the goodness of motherhood journey
9:48
that even though life can be tough
9:51
there's always a rainbow
9:53
after the rain and there's always a
9:55
light at the end of the tunnel yeah uh
9:58
always i mentioned when i was
9:59
introducing you that you're the ceo and
10:01
founder of the of gomant
10:04
and it's a platform for moms where they
10:06
can learn and find support for each
10:09
other so so it's not this is not just a
10:11
book this is a movement
10:15
they go to this platform what are they
10:19
so they can find them uh they can find
10:22
my contact details in that website and i
10:26
also have a gomsh support group on
10:28
facebook right and they can join freely
10:32
because go mom she is a book for moms
10:36
uh were looking for encouragement
10:38
looking for positive words we're looking
10:41
for those uh moments that they need in
10:44
order to move forward to their life so
10:47
if you need someone to talk to i'm there
10:50
i'm gonna be in in the website i'm gonna
10:52
be in my facebook group so feel free to
10:55
reach me out anytime and we're gonna
10:57
show everyone how to do that in in just
11:01
um is there a second book coming out are
11:03
you going to be writing another book
11:06
yes of course the second book coming up
11:08
before the baby number two
11:13
you heard it here first before the baby
11:15
number two yeah you already have an idea
11:17
as to what you're going to be writing
11:20
um so far i'm in the process of my
11:25
and observation so i haven't really
11:26
decided what's going to be but for sure
11:28
it's all about motherhood
11:32
you're going to stay in that same poor
11:36
got it totally get it so
11:38
um do you have any like interesting
11:41
quirks when you're writing do you do
11:42
something that's like a little unusual
11:44
i've had authors on here and they say
11:46
that they they have a particular thing
11:48
sitting on their desk and you know as
11:50
they're writing they only write x amount
11:52
of words a day is there something that
11:54
you do that you're routine
11:59
i think what i always do before i write
12:05
connect with myself look around because
12:08
i cannot write if it's not
12:11
real and if it doesn't uh personally
12:16
so once i feel connected with that
12:18
situation that's a time that i feel
12:20
inspired and connect so if there's
12:22
something that i do when i'm writing to
12:25
get me inspired maybe
12:32
my how to my inspiration which is my
12:36
yeah so if for example i'm writing and i
12:39
feel like sharks i don't know what to do
12:41
or what to write anymore i'm running out
12:42
of ideas or words so i have i'll have a
12:45
like five minutes break and then i just
12:47
want to see his face and hug him and i
12:55
i get it my babies are not babies
12:57
anymore my my youngest is just turning
12:59
36 so i remember those times but
13:03
not really because it's so long ago but
13:07
i do remember wanting to like you know
13:09
pinch those cheeks because they they're
13:11
only that young for a certain amount of
13:13
time you mentioned something you know
13:15
that when you you for you don't have the
13:17
words and you need some inspiration you
13:19
go hug your little one do you ever get
13:23
sorry oh yeah yeah yeah the writer's
13:26
so i have it many times yeah
13:30
but then my my mentor who's like the oa
13:34
the oao miss patch every time i'm having
13:38
a writer's black i always talk to her i
13:40
always talk to my husband and it's like
13:42
i don't know what to say anymore i don't
13:45
right path for me i always doubt myself
13:48
and so that's why you need some people
13:51
in your life to give you some
13:53
information to give that reality check
13:55
right right you know yeah
14:00
the online author's office she's great
14:04
miss p is great pashmina is awesome and
14:06
if you're listening and you're saying
14:07
you know i have a book inside of me this
14:10
is a great organization to reach out to
14:12
they can help you they can motivate you
14:14
they can be there for you because this
14:16
is not a journey you want to take a loan
14:22
many people in your in your uh
14:25
in your back pocket you know cheering
14:27
you on we've talked about a couple of
14:29
things and i'm going to put some um
14:31
information up you can go over to
14:33
victoria's website at victorian.com
14:37
and you can see all the contact
14:39
information and the journal you know the
14:40
stuff that the information that you can
14:42
use while you're you're on this uh
14:45
journey of being a momshee
14:50
check out your podcast which is on
14:53
spotify the go mom she podcast what is
14:56
that what is the podcast about
14:58
so uh what i do in my podcast is i
15:01
interview momshees around the world to
15:03
talk about uh their authentic experience
15:06
as well because in my book i talked
15:09
about my authentic experience and i want
15:12
other mum she's experiences too that's
15:15
why i created this platform to
15:18
to share you know different journeys
15:20
that could shed some hope and light to
15:23
other moms who are listening to us on
15:25
spotify i think that's wonderful and
15:28
spotify is a very cool place to have a
15:30
podcast so congratulations to you thank
15:33
you're also on instagram
15:35
at go mamchi there's going to be a theme
15:38
a common theme amongst here
15:42
go munchie.com just type that into the
15:45
search and you will find you up there
15:48
and they can go over to amazon to pick
15:53
gomamshi and i encourage you to go do
15:56
this i really do if you're a new mom
15:58
you're thinking about being a mom and
16:00
you want to be a mom she i love that
16:02
endearment by the way totally love that
16:04
endearment and and congratulations on
16:06
being a bestseller that must have been
16:08
very very exciting for you right
16:14
that's in part working with um uh
16:16
pashmina over at oao they're they're
16:19
awesome what they do
16:20
um and so congratulations to you i just
16:23
have one more question for you and that
16:25
is if you were to give
16:28
something to the people that are
16:30
listening up just a motivational piece
16:34
of information what would you tell
16:35
everyone right now either about being a
16:37
mom writing a book any of those things
16:40
what would be your message to them right
16:43
my message is so simple you do you
16:46
you know yourself better than anybody
16:49
so don't let the society or the people
16:52
around you dictate your
16:55
motherhood journey you create your own
16:57
journey whatever that works for you and
17:02
that's beautiful and there's no question
17:04
in my mind that you are an amazing role
17:07
model there's no question in my mind
17:09
that your next book coming out will also
17:11
be a bestseller you'll have to come back
17:12
and tell us all about it
17:15
thank you for taking time with us we're
17:17
in different time zones so i'm really
17:18
thrilled that we were able to do this
17:21
the way we did it um
17:23
i want to also thank our audience you
17:25
have a choice as to where you spend your
17:27
time and you chose to spend it with
17:29
victoria and i today and we thank you
17:31
for that we are very grateful for that
17:33
so go out give somebody an awesome day
17:36
and we'll see you on the next episode of
17:39
the author spotlight goodbye everyone
