0:05
hi everybody Welcome Back to Life on
0:07
cour and this installment of Aging like
0:09
a fine wine we highlight extraordinary
0:12
and ordinary people doing incredibly
0:15
wonderful things in the next stage of
0:18
their life and today we have the
0:21
fabulous test cator she is an
0:24
award-winning director filmmaker
0:27
best-selling author and CEO and founder
0:30
at Gwen Global Tess welcome thank you as
0:34
as you can call me Tess you can call me
0:37
Gwen but don't call me late for wine30
0:40
oh I will never call you late for wine
0:41
even though we're drinking water today
0:43
yeah yeah cheers cheers cheers to you so
0:47
Gwen tell us a little bit about your
0:49
story how did you end up where you are
0:51
now and and tell us a little about the
0:55
there wow I know this is a a short time
0:58
so I'll try to truncate it as much as
1:00
possible because I have a book out that
1:02
I'm actually reworking for version two
1:03
Called Homeless to the White House which
1:05
tells the entire crazy journey of my
1:07
life that ranges from uh being at
1:10
gunpoint in Congo to uh servicing
1:13
humanitarian projects around the world I
1:16
have I'm the hybrid humanitarian hybrid
1:19
I guess of a nonprofit organization and
1:21
a production company and I ride those
1:23
two waves as best as I can through the
1:25
surface of life because I have a very
1:28
big proponent and passion for
1:31
humanitarian projects and bringing clean
1:33
water and serving homeless and dealing
1:35
with the healing of trauma with regard
1:38
to trafficking people um and all kinds
1:41
of domestic violence and all that so I'm
1:45
a production company and a nonprofit
1:47
organization all rolled into making
1:49
social impact and making the world a
1:50
better place and your film you recently
1:54
had some some pretty major Awards in toe
1:58
with this film can you talk about that a
2:00
bit yeah that was an absolute accidental
2:04
Divine manifestation of sorts it was a
2:06
short film called the rescue and it
2:09
didn't start out to be a short film and
2:10
it started out to be something that was
2:12
a promo for the hotel industry to be
2:14
able to utilize to continue educating
2:16
their employee base to learn how to
2:19
navigate the waters if they notice that
2:22
there's something strange in their
2:23
hotels like someone that looks like
2:25
they're traffic so I shot this promo
2:27
video and it turned into a short film I
2:29
threw it out to the universe and 21
2:32
Awards came back and uh they ranged from
2:35
Best Director to best score to best
2:38
short best super short you know all
2:40
kinds of things um Can World Film
2:43
Festival um Toronto Berlin The
2:47
Whistleblower was one of my favorites
2:49
and that was out of Washington DC which
2:51
is going to help me continue the work of
2:52
advocacy for trafficking and uh helping
2:55
to change laws I have to ask you
2:58
mentioned being held up at gunpoint in
3:00
the Congo yes I wasn't held up I I had a
3:04
gun pointed at me I was filming for a
3:07
documentary of a man who was running for
3:10
president of Congo another story another
3:12
long day a long story another day back
3:16
yes um but basically I was filming the
3:18
presidential monument in the main town
3:21
of uh K in kinasa and a military person
3:25
turned around and noticed I was filming
3:27
and they came walking towards my car
3:29
which I had driver and a translator and
3:31
he had a rifle pointed right at my head
3:34
and and I said oh my God and so the
3:37
translator told the driver I think the
3:40
word was vend vend which is drive drive
3:43
so we didn't get shot at but it was
3:45
enough of a a shock to the nervous
3:47
system to have this rifle very close to
3:50
my car I was there because I was on a
3:53
journey to advocate for the plight of
3:56
the girls and women and children that
3:58
are raped on a day daily basis because
4:00
of a mineral called Colton and if you
4:03
look that up it's the mineral that
4:05
actually is the conductivity of our
4:07
computers and our telephones so con
4:10
Colton is very much a part of you and I
4:11
speaking today so not many people know
4:14
that that's how intricate these markets
4:17
and international markets are where
4:19
there are people brutally attacked on
4:20
the opposite end of this because it's a
4:22
very valuable mineral so I was very
4:24
passionate about that and I went into
4:26
cono by myself and came out to tell a
4:30
my God passion drives you clearly yes a
4:34
little bit of an adrenaline junkie yeah
4:37
but but to an end of you know not just
4:39
like climbing mountains or or skydiving
4:42
to to really affect change and help and
4:45
give voice to those who don't have one
4:48
and absolutely I commend you I mean it's
4:50
it's inspiring and I I can't help but
4:52
ask you given the the road that you've
4:55
chosen and the work that you do what
4:57
inspires you to keep going and putting
4:59
yourself in these positions what drives
5:03
about making my life matter which is so
5:07
important in our world right now to be
5:09
able to whether from experience or not
5:12
but to be able to be there and to help
5:14
where and when we can and it's changing
5:17
lives every day you're I hope so I do
5:21
hear that and that makes me very happy
5:23
and makes me inspired to keep going you
5:26
know I'm I'm doing some fun things too
5:28
I'm going down to bise um this coming
5:31
month and we're going to be filming a
5:32
very big adventure of a Mayan culture
5:35
that hadn't been exposed or adventured
5:37
into for the last 200 plus years so will
5:40
that be in film available yes we're
5:42
we're going to be filming it so it's
5:43
going to go through an educational
5:44
portal that we're launching that goes
5:46
into 880,000 plus schools and then it
5:48
will be a documentary series as well
5:50
that will be on a platform yet to be
5:52
determined but we're really excited
5:54
because we're going to use light our
5:56
technology and all kinds of really cool
5:58
Technologies and we're going down with
6:00
this small I'm going to be one of the
6:02
camera people and directing and um I'm
6:04
very excited about that so it' be a
6:06
different kind of Adventure going
6:08
through adventuring through caves ra
6:09
rather than the bush in Africa right and
6:13
did I hear that you just finished a
6:15
children's book I did so uh Bella wishes
6:19
is a very dear character that I created
6:21
back in 2004 and I know I I released
6:24
back then version one but very soon
6:26
after that I started recreating her with
6:28
my illustrator um Bella wishes is about
6:31
a belly wish belly dancing hippopotamus
6:33
it shows really fun and movement and
6:35
dance for young people to get in tune
6:37
with their bodies and to know that that
6:39
they can make right decisions about
6:41
nutrition and healthy living and dancing
6:43
and having fun and being you know a part
6:46
of having self-empowerment but also
6:49
learning how to play in teams so um we
6:52
re-released I we released that just this
6:54
past month and became a bestseller on
6:56
four different platforms of Amazon books
6:59
and we're really excited about
7:00
announcing the next layer of her
7:02
becoming 3D animated character and
7:05
dancing and singing of all these songs
7:07
that I created back in the day so it's
7:09
very early learning reading so your your
7:12
baby's only a month old so maybe a
7:13
little too early but I have a two and a
7:15
half-year old granddaughter as well oh
7:17
Grand oh she'll love Bella yes yes I'll
7:20
have to send you a book you're a film
7:21
producer you're a writer how do you want
7:25
remembered I think how it all
7:28
encapsulates is I'm a
7:30
Storyteller I love the story I love
7:33
finding deep down into the core of
7:35
people that I interview or I talk to or
7:37
I do stories on what makes them tick
7:41
what's their story how do they reveal
7:42
the heel so anything I can find a story
7:45
and anything so when I write music it's
7:47
a story when I do a short film it's a
7:49
story when I write a poem it's a story
7:52
anything that I do on that creative film
7:54
I think the core of it is the
7:55
storytelling and how we can all have the
7:57
bravery and courage to tell our
8:00
stories and you do encourage you are an
8:03
incredibly nurturing woman to to all of
8:06
us who know you and oh thank you I think
8:09
when you have that kind of support
8:12
system behind you especially the the
8:16
people that whose lives you're touching
8:18
who have so many challenges when with
8:21
you at the helm they truly have
8:23
compassion and and that resonates
8:25
throughout all that you do a thank you
8:30
well on a much lighter note what's your
8:34
wine so I'm a foodie I love to cook you
8:37
and I've talked about this before so my
8:39
favorite Chardonnay would be the rich
8:41
buttery oi and you know you and I talked
8:45
about that as well um I love um the full
8:49
bodies the Old Vine zendel and the
8:52
Cabernet that have to go into that world
8:54
of red sauces and stews and things like
8:58
that in the cold winter months
9:00
um it depends on the time of day and
9:02
what I'm doing you know I love I love
9:05
the culture of wine and tasting and
9:07
smelling and absorbing and and the
9:09
bubbles of prco um and I've I've gotten
9:12
into a new little thing that you might
9:14
like lavender syrup you can get it on
9:16
Amazon and La syrup lavender syrup so we
9:21
served at our Gwen luminary Awards this
9:23
past week past month um we served a
9:27
lavender infused prco and had a
9:29
beautiful sprig of lavender on top of it
9:31
it was really beautiful and it tastes
9:33
really good yeah and then I've also
9:36
infused lavender inside of a tequila and
9:41
lemon I lemonade with tequila or vodka
9:44
not together separate day separate
9:47
cocktail um and when I say infused you
9:49
just put a you know like a little cap
9:51
full into it and then shake it in a
9:53
martini shaker and then pour it out into
9:55
your glass okay so it's a refreshing
9:57
cocktail and then the wine uh and the
10:00
prco the lavender infused there and the
10:02
lavender with prco sounds
10:04
absolutely like maybe maybe trouble
10:08
ahead it's a little troubling I'm
10:10
teasing you but it's really delicious
10:13
just because my new my new found uh
10:16
little cocktail infuser or prco
10:19
infuser well that sounds awesome what's
10:24
you well I'm going to be doing some more
10:27
social media and bringing Bella more to
10:30
life because there's music involved with
10:32
that I'm going to bise on May 1st for
10:34
nine days to shoot the um the beginning
10:37
adventure of the Mayes and I am doing
10:40
the homeless to the White House rewrite
10:42
and in the parallel universe I'm writing
10:44
another book that kind of is the
10:46
extension of homeless to the White House
10:48
and just all kinds of wonderful things
10:50
we're doing a lot of work at the
10:52
Hollywood Women's Club
10:55
um events tell us about the Hol so I'm
10:58
really excited about during a summer
10:59
camp there the last two weeks of June
11:03
and it's going to be ages 9 to 17 and
11:07
it's going to be a mashup creative Camp
11:09
so it's going to be fun where people are
11:10
going to be able to explore their
11:12
different creative sides whether it's
11:14
through Rhythm or music or dance or
11:16
spoken word and so um I'm just finishing
11:19
the touches on it and we're going to
11:20
start promoting it next week so I'm
11:22
really excited about that that sound
11:24
that is exciting that sounds fabulous
11:26
yeah I love being engaged with that um
11:30
youthful energy and the brains and the
11:32
creativity and being able to let them
11:34
explore and heal because there's a lot
11:37
of a lot of healing that needs to go on
11:39
in the world and so I'm really excited
11:40
to get this Camp off the ground you have
11:42
so much on your plate and I look forward
11:45
we all look forward to sharing with you
11:48
as you head out on this journey of yours
11:51
and I know you'll keep this posted and
11:52
in turn we will keep you all posted out
11:55
there um with Tessa's developments and
11:58
definitely when the new book book comes
11:59
out let us know absolutely yeah I am so
12:03
glad you came on today thank you so I'm
12:05
so grateful I know we've been trying to
12:06
get this date together for quite a while
12:08
but you're just just a you are as well
12:12
and I'm I'm I'm praying that you enjoy
12:14
your beautiful horses this afternoon and
12:16
then end with a nice glass of wine and
12:18
I'll be toasting you at happy hour this
12:20
evening I'm actually gonna be on a call
12:23
with a bunch of women that we developed
12:25
this group during Co so I'll tell about
12:27
today and and tell them about your
12:30
beautiful podcast and all the things you
12:32
and Karen are doing thank you so much I
12:34
appreciate that and thank you all for
12:36
being out there and listening and
12:38
following us on our little journey of
12:40
Life on court until next time I'm Mel
