Who made Usher, Avril Lavigne, Kendrick Lamar, Fitz and the Tantrums and Boyz II Men, to name a few, look SO good? I'll tell you -- It's Wardrobe stylist and costume designer David Royer, from TheOnly.agency and he's with me today on this Little White Lie
David uses his keen sense of style to create looks and brands that feel natural and approachable. Something fans can aspire too while still maintaining the larger than life essence we crave from our artists for events ranging from the Grammys Awards, the Super Bowl, Red Carpet Premieres and more.
1. David - tell us how you came to be a stylist?
From simpler roots growing up in a small town in southern Oregon as the son of a schoolteacher and a mechanic. His passion for style, design and fashion brought him to London and New York before returning west to his hometown of Los Angeles where he continues to innovate, pushing past the expected with a sense of humor and great respect for his craft.
2. Back in the old days…in the Clairol days women were 'confined' to wearing subdued colors and 'dress like your age'. What's changed? Or has it
3. Do you think that societal norms are changing? How is the media and entertainment changing how we show up? Or….has it?
4. Let’s talk about young women dying their hair white or gray. Is it a trend or here to stay?
5. What's one thing you would like people to know about aging and beauty?
Do you follow fashion trends? Which ones are you loving now? Post in the comments.

hello everyone Karen glasser here and
0:02
welcome to this live episode of the
0:04
little white lie so I have a question
0:06
for you who do you think made uh sure
0:09
Avril Lavigne kendrick lamar's gigi
0:11
hadid and boys to men just to name a few
0:14
look so good well I'll tell you its
0:18
wardrobe stylist and constituting
0:19
designer David Goyer from the only dot
0:21
agency and he's with me today on the
0:25
little white lie I am so excited David
0:28
how are you good morning haha friend
0:31
dude I'm thrilled to be here thank you
0:33
for having me on I am so excited i mean
0:36
i know that you use your team sense of
0:38
style to create looks and brands that
0:40
feel natural and approachable sometimes
0:43
something that fans can aspire to while
0:45
they're still maintaining you know the
0:47
larger than life essence that we crave
0:49
from our artists and events so I know
0:51
you've dressed for people for the
0:52
Grammys and for the super bowl and for
0:55
the red carpet premieres I mean you just
0:57
go on and on and on I'm just delighted
1:00
that you're taking time out of your very
1:01
very busy schedule to be here with us
1:04
today so tell me tell me a little bit
1:06
about your story how did you end up
1:09
becoming a stylist to the stars well
1:14
it's a honestly it all happened pretty
1:16
organically I started in a very small
1:21
town i was born in Los Angeles but my
1:23
parents moved me up to Oregon so fashion
1:26
wasn't exactly a giant industry in a
1:30
central point Oregon but it was
1:32
something I've always loved and I tried
1:34
to find it any which way I possibly
1:36
could so when I finally got to
1:40
university you know we're skipping a big
1:42
chunk here I decided to study theatre
1:45
and I loved acting and I love cops in
1:48
July so when I graduated the first place
1:54
I wanted to go to with New York sort of
1:56
the mecca of it all in my eyes at that
1:59
time and it was it was very interesting
2:05
because I didn't arrive in any one
2:09
specific direction and I was trying it
2:12
all i was doing little independ
2:13
filmed and I did a little bit of theatre
2:16
work and then I knew a very big party
2:21
promoter there and she would ask me to
2:23
make her different pieces so when she
2:27
would go out people be like oh my god
2:28
what you're wearing a rad so they would
2:32
say hey would you make me something and
2:34
I rent oh yeah of course that's great so
2:38
when I finally decided that hey this
2:41
fashion thing might be worth a worth a
2:43
deeper look I moved back to Los Angeles
2:46
popped into the retail market for a
2:49
minute ended up at Dior on Rodeo Drive
2:52
which you know is better than working it
2:55
you know maybe so but in that wild I all
3:02
right but in that world I end up meeting
3:04
a lot of pilots and realized that this
3:07
was not only an interesting creative
3:12
dynamic career but could be very you
3:15
know lucrative could be a in terms of a
3:18
lifelong career that I could I could do
3:20
you know till the day I die so through
3:24
uh people i knew my partner being one of
3:28
them i ended up meeting a very very
3:31
well-known agent who handled by lips and
3:35
hair and makeup artist and whatnot he he
3:41
hooked me up with a few test him so I we
3:44
could test the waters then he introduced
3:46
me to a phenomenal stylist who became my
3:50
mentor for almost four years and I
3:53
assisted and studied under her and then
3:58
it was time it just sort of organically
4:01
happened and within one month of me
4:05
going out on my own Usher's management
4:08
called and said we really love David's
4:10
work and we want to work with him and
4:12
that was literally right right in the
4:14
middle of the OMG period and that which
4:18
led into like we were talking about the
4:20
AMA the Grammys the Super Bowl halftime
4:22
show you know he wanted to go to Fashion
4:27
Week in Paris
4:27
then it just so it just kind of blew up
4:30
from there but it was pretty interesting
4:31
that in essence you know usher with my
4:34
first client so we're talking about
4:37
being thrown into the deep end oh whoa
4:41
oh poor you if that's all Genesis poor
4:44
you so are you how cool is that how cool
4:48
is that but I know it's not just like an
4:50
overnight sensation you work very very
4:52
hard to get where you are at and you
4:54
continue to work really really hard as
4:56
to where you are going and that's one of
4:58
the reasons why I really wanted to bring
5:00
you on today because I wanted to talk
5:02
about aging and beauty as I have been on
5:06
this journey my little I'm talking with
5:08
my hands again but as I've been on this
5:10
journey this little white lie journey I
5:11
always like to start the show by saying
5:13
hey guys look look at the grow out and
5:15
look what's going on here because this
5:17
is what I'm embracing embracing my my
5:20
aging I'm embracing my grey I'm
5:22
embracing everything about Who I am and
5:24
that's why I wanted to bring you on
5:26
because back in the day back in the
5:28
olden days when I was you know Ali khat
5:30
there Claire all used to really kind of
5:33
guide people as to how their hair is
5:35
supposed to look right if they talked
5:37
about you know you know watch that gray
5:39
right out of your hair so do you think
5:41
times are changing our weaving or
5:43
weeping told what to wear how to how to
5:46
ask how to dress or you think that maybe
5:48
things are starting to change a little
5:49
bit I think that things are starting to
5:52
change more than just a little bit I
5:55
think there is a very large embracing of
5:58
one quote unquote natural state not in
6:03
the sense of letting yourself go there's
6:05
there's very much something to be said
6:07
for you know taking care of your skin
6:10
taking care of your hair you know taking
6:12
care of your insides and being healthy
6:16
but not being still preoccupied with
6:20
covering up what is quote unquote
6:21
considered a flaw I find it bizarre that
6:26
something as simple as going gray is
6:29
almost treated like an ailment as a
6:33
natural process in life right now I mean
6:36
I'm bald you know and i started i
6:39
started going bald by golly
6:41
like I try to uh you know and that
6:45
started in my 20 you know I have friends
6:47
who started going you know very famous
6:49
actors right now young actors on very
6:53
very well-known shows that are still in
6:56
their early 20 and they're going gray so
7:00
and there's this push push push for
7:03
youth youth youth and I think there is
7:06
there's a place for it now but it I
7:09
don't think it is as it is as coveted as
7:12
it used to be well statistical touch on
7:16
that I want to touch on that because um
7:17
I'm noticing a lot of young women who
7:21
are coloring your hair white yep silver
7:24
gray what's with that is that a trend or
7:27
or is that a sign of things to come I
7:30
think it is one of those bizarre
7:33
cyclical trends because i remember back
7:36
in the late 90s that came into play and
7:40
i even did that to a friend of mine pair
7:42
drew a jet-black hair at the time and
7:45
she wanted to be silver block or silver
7:48
white and I was like great let's do it I
7:52
think with the idea of what a woman
7:59
should be and should look like is
8:02
changing dramatically and I think it's
8:04
because women like you rich Bravo are
8:08
embracing what is naturally happening
8:13
because there is nothing wrong with it
8:16
it doesn't make you less intelligent it
8:20
doesn't make you less strong it doesn't
8:22
make you less assertive or it's just
8:24
simply a pigment change so I think
8:30
letting you know and you take women I
8:33
mean you look at older women like Helen
8:36
Mirren or Judi Dench or you know of
8:38
those sorts who haven't been plucked and
8:42
pulled in and they're stunning you look
8:46
at observing right Jamie being perfect
8:48
yeah quite Jess you let it go gray a few
8:51
years ago you know rain beautiful
8:54
you know for women and there's something
8:56
I feel I feel that that is something not
8:59
only women that would be considered
9:02
their peers and age but also younger
9:05
women and even girls can see that and go
9:08
oh the future isn't it terrifying I
9:10
don't have to live up to these
9:12
impossible standards because wow look
9:15
look at what these women have to come
9:17
and there is look fantastic so I mean a
9:20
question and remains to be said then our
9:22
societal norms changing I mean is media
9:25
entertainment are they changing how we
9:28
do have society views aging or not is
9:32
this just a blip do you think that we
9:36
can go backwards from this or or is it a
9:38
positive thing we're going to move
9:39
forward is society of norms are they
9:41
changing I think they are changing I
9:43
think the the norm in our society are
9:46
moving they're moving to a level of
9:51
openness that I don't think we've really
9:53
seen before before it was movement there
9:57
was you know think about you know the
10:01
you know early 20th century when all of
10:03
a sudden women put on pants and it was a
10:05
revolutionary you know there I mean so
10:08
now because there's I will say the
10:12
younger generation and even you know I
10:15
think even the boob baby boomers at this
10:17
moment in time are embracing the fact
10:20
that there are just so many options so
10:23
many space of being and the young really
10:29
embraced variety right now they don't
10:33
expect older people quote unquote to
10:38
look a certain way anymore the way
10:42
things are even campaigned aren't the
10:44
same anymore you know and even fashion
10:48
even the Honda utmost the the upper
10:51
echelon of fashion on the runway you're
10:53
seeing people of size you are seeing men
10:58
and women with gray hair with wrinkles
11:00
right so when when you see the diversity
11:05
and you see how amazing it can look
11:07
it actually I feel like it adds it it
11:11
enhances so the norm I don't think
11:15
there's any such thing anymore and
11:17
they're around there's no honestly
11:20
because I just don't believe in the rule
11:22
you know aside well I'd honestly I was
11:26
going to say aside from like the hem of
11:27
a path but even that has changed you
11:29
know my reasoning everything can be
11:31
explored now and we are in for some very
11:37
scary time but the basic level of the
11:40
word exciting were an exciting time
11:43
especially with the revolution of the
11:46
woman I believe the woman is she is
11:51
going to change the norm and that's the
11:52
Royal she because whatever the woman
11:56
does is going to dictate what the woman
11:58
does dad know important is that you're
12:01
saying this i mean i'm feeling very
12:02
empowered myself by being able to show
12:05
up like this i'm saying on social media
12:07
these grey and proud groups that are out
12:11
there and they have thousands and
12:13
thousands of members in these social
12:15
media groups that are going for
12:17
encouragement and support as they go
12:19
through this transition in life and I've
12:21
been talking a lot about the little
12:23
white lie is not necessarily your white
12:24
hair the little white line maybe how if
12:27
you're going to have work done on your
12:28
face or you have had work done in your
12:30
face or what kind of make if you're
12:32
going to wear or in my case in addition
12:34
to this my 5-inch heels that I used to
12:36
wear all the time because somehow i
12:38
equated five-inch heels with youth and
12:40
flat shoes with old lady people and now
12:44
I were flat yes I admit it I wear flats
12:47
I'm going white and i don't feel like
12:49
i'm old i know that even though i might
12:52
be 60 i feel that i am just as vibrant
12:55
and young as I was 30 years ago and I
12:57
think a lot of women aren't bracing that
12:59
at this point oh I absolutely agree I
13:02
absolutely agree I don't think age is
13:05
the thing that we need to hide anymore
13:07
and it's funny because it used to be
13:10
there was it was a very long phase when
13:14
someone would ask someone's age and they
13:15
say well how will do you think I you
13:17
know hoping that they would get younger
13:19
could let knowing it let me
13:20
thankfully that's what everybody wanted
13:21
they everybody want to be okay yeah now
13:23
I think people boldly say their age and
13:27
their sterility with it a great one of
13:30
those people I'm one of those people
13:32
because it breaks all the myth of what
13:35
age is and it's just like what you said
13:39
you feel empowered and as young as ever
13:41
that's your age frankly I mean we're not
13:45
trees you don't cut us in half and count
13:47
the Rings it's just not that simple I
13:52
even want to know how many brings I have
13:54
inside so okay so let's say and we I
13:59
know we have a lot of viewers on thank
14:00
you viewers by the way we're putting
14:02
some of your comments up here what do we
14:04
tell our viewers that are deciding
14:07
whether they want to start taking this
14:08
journey they want to start showing up
14:10
however they want to show up and I'm not
14:11
saying they said by not coloring your
14:13
hair or by coloring your hair there's
14:15
something wrong with you however you
14:16
decide you want to take this journey
14:17
what would you like our viewers to know
14:21
about aging and beauty that might help
14:23
the journey a little bit to lift not so
14:26
painful because this can be painful in
14:29
the beginning what would you suggest to
14:31
this I would take it in stages because
14:37
there's no need to revolutionize
14:41
yourself overnight you want to be able
14:45
to I mean we are there people are
14:47
constantly changing whether we want to
14:50
or not and if you make small choices
14:53
along the way you're not going to look
14:56
in the mirror and all of a sudden see a
14:58
stranger you're going to feel that
15:00
you've grown in to this person
15:02
organically and it's not going to appear
15:08
such a shock to yourself and those
15:10
around you because the hardest part I
15:13
think would make any kind of decision
15:14
all the questions yeah so just simply
15:20
letting your hair grow out or maybe not
15:24
wearing as much makeup as you used to or
15:27
lowering the heel of your shoe you know
15:30
or it simply just
15:33
you know changing some article that
15:36
people associate that you always wore
15:37
but you're just like you know what I
15:39
don't want to wear skirts anymore I'm
15:41
done I really like my jeans and I want
15:44
to wear my G you know something as
15:46
simple as that or take a contact out and
15:49
embracing the fact that you wear glasses
15:50
you know they're just certain things
15:52
that you know but then there's a bold
15:56
then they're the ones he said hey guess
15:58
what the gray has grown out a bit I'm
16:01
going to cut my hair super short all the
16:02
colors will be gone I'm address a funky
16:04
new do and great any more power to you
16:08
so yeah if there are no wrong choices in
16:11
this regard that can't be corrected
16:14
because you know we're getting a little
16:17
white lie you try your glasses you still
16:19
don't like it which contact second may
16:21
be medically my hair girl yeah and
16:23
that's what my hairdresser said to leave
16:25
it if you decide you don't like it like
16:26
it color it yeah it's up to you it's
16:30
whatever makes you feel like the best
16:33
you it just has to feel organic and
16:36
honest there's it's very difficult to
16:41
have a conversation with someone who
16:44
feels that society has put something
16:48
upon them and they are they appear as
16:51
what they think they should they're
16:53
expected to appear at that becomes
16:56
confusing it does that I don't think
16:58
that shows a I don't question someone's
17:02
integrity so much but it does seem that
17:05
there's a bit of insecurity and it and
17:08
you don't want especially in business
17:11
you don't want to have to work with
17:12
someone who you constantly have to
17:14
reaffirm and so like what you're doing
17:19
it's almost a badge of honor and you're
17:20
like okay here's a strong person we
17:22
could you know we can Rumble with this
17:24
person that's fantastic that's what I'm
17:26
hoping for thing that is that you know
17:28
what actually yeah I have a friend she's
17:31
currently she has breast cancer she just
17:36
finished her chemo and she's about to
17:38
have a double mastectomy now of course
17:41
she lost all her hair and she vowed to
17:44
spend some time without breath
17:46
um so when you talk about what it is to
17:49
be a woman she's completely embraced it
17:53
you know and she wears a hat because
17:55
been cold but you know she wears you
17:58
know she wears her bald head like it's a
18:01
crown and is not going to feel the need
18:05
to wear big baggy sweatshirt to cover up
18:07
the fact that she's going through
18:09
something that women go through
18:11
unfortunately so it is there's that
18:16
honesty that I think is more I don't
18:21
know it almost it's almost like an open
18:23
arms I feel more drawn to people who are
18:26
willing to just let themselves be the
18:30
best that they are I love your lipstick
18:34
honesty honesty in exchange for the word
18:37
on then off sentence yeah I think it
18:41
really resonates with me that the word
18:42
honesty and I want to ask our viewers
18:44
and whether you're watching now or on
18:47
replay later on I want to find out from
18:49
you guys do you follow fashion trends
18:52
are you following fashion trends so so
18:54
if the fashion out there is young people
18:56
coloring your hair white or gray are you
18:58
going to go run out and do that too or
18:59
if the fashion trend out there is to you
19:03
know where a certain style or a certain
19:05
kind of makeup do you follow fashion
19:06
trends and make sure you post right
19:08
there right in the comments over there
19:09
at the curiosity what your answers are
19:12
we will report some of those answers
19:14
later on we got and we got John saying
19:17
new joy at all well John hifi for you
19:23
okay oh and we've gonna start throwing
19:27
some of these up here we got Casey
19:29
everhard hey Casey so you you don't you
19:32
try to and I know all of your really
19:33
cool shoes is because of other way it's
19:36
because of David over here David is I
19:39

19:41

19:44
you're watching this right now or you
19:46

19:48
your comment over there I gave it I am
19:50
so delighted that you came on with this
19:51

19:53
