0:05
what do you do when you when the devil
0:09
in you says you can't do that well we're
0:11
gonna talk about that question and more
0:13
with our special guest on this little
0:15
white lie hello everyone my name is
0:17
Karen Glasser and I am delighted that
0:20
you're here the little white lie is all
0:22
about the lies that we tell ourselves as
0:24
we get older and it doesn't matter how
0:26
old you are you can be young at thirty
0:28
twenty or old or older like me sixty as
0:32
I always do at the beginning of my show
0:35
I do my reveal so here we go I feel like
0:40
a little old lady from Pasadena over
0:42
here today we have a very very special
0:46
guest she is an engineer and a fashion
0:49
model and her name is Jacqueline DePaul
0:51
she has a degree in physics yes you
0:54
heard me right a degree in physics and
0:55
she started a second career as a fashion
0:58
model at the age of 38 so without
1:01
further ado let's welcome Jacqueline
1:03
DePaul into the show hey Jacqueline how
1:05
you doing I'm good how are you I am
1:08
doing amazing and I can't wait to get
1:11
into your story but before we do that I
1:14
would like to ask you what is your
1:17
little white lie my little white lie was
1:21
at age 38 when I said you can't just
1:24
start modeling now that's not what's
1:26
that's not proper so that was my little
1:30
white lie and you're here to talk about
1:33
this right now because you did something
1:35
that not a lot of people do I mean let's
1:37
be honest not a lot of people do that so
1:40
okay you're an engineer yeah okay and
1:43
now you're walking the runway oh my gosh
1:46
I mean you know how did that happen
1:48
exactly why don't we share with the
1:50
audience how did that happen well when I
1:54
I'm 48 now when I was 38 my hobby
1:57
outside of engineering was ballroom
1:59
dancing and I got injured couldn't dance
2:01
anymore that creative side of me I
2:03
couldn't express it anymore and I was
2:06
very sad so I sat there reading
2:08
self-help books trying to figure out
2:09
what to do about this now depression
2:11
that I had that I couldn't
2:14
perform in that way anymore
2:17
and the engineering I love my
2:19
engineering it stimulates my
2:20
intellectual side but I need the
2:22
artistic to and then I'm reading some
2:24
random book and I thought I think I'll
2:26
just start modeling now and then Anne
2:30
became just like the little cartoons
2:32
that we used to watch when we were kids
2:33
where there's the devil on one shoulder
2:34
and then the angel on the other shoulder
2:36
and the angel says let's model and the
2:39
devil says you can't do that you're 38
2:41
that's for 16 year olds and I just won't
2:45
tell anybody how old I am I'll just say
2:47
I'm 29 and the other devil says you
2:49
can't just start modeling it's
2:50
impossible and then well you know so
2:52
there was this thing right I finally
2:55
just decided yeah I'm not trying to be
2:59
Gisele Bundchen I'm not trying to be
3:00
Cindy Crawford I just want to model for
3:03
the experience of modeling and the fun
3:05
and so I just said I would just start
3:08
with a promise to myself that there was
3:10
no pressure to succeed or do anything in
3:12
particular that was just going to be
3:15
something that I enjoyed the process of
3:18
and then I started and and it was a long
3:22
process from there to become an actual
3:24
working model but I did it and you and
3:28
you did it and you're here to talk about
3:29
it now I mean this is you know it must
3:32
be kind of interesting to meld the two
3:35
different kind of careers right I mean
3:38
one is you're as we were talking earlier
3:40
your geek side right yeah your gimmick
3:43
you're a geek right I'm regulars you're
3:46
in the fashion industry and what an
3:48
amazing way to meld both right what is
3:51
this amazing way to built meld both and
3:53
here you are you are working you're
3:55
working a fashion model and I was asking
3:59
you before the show are you doing you
4:01
know you're thinking about leaving your
4:02
job as an engineer or are you going to
4:06
do both and you said what did you say I
4:09
love my job right I love my engineering
4:12
job and I and I really want people to
4:15
know that I think that many of us are so
4:18
multifaceted and I think that we don't
4:21
bother to explore those pathways in
4:25
this really makes my life happy and
4:27
balanced when I had the engineering and
4:30
the dancing I felt balanced but when I
4:33
I didn't anymore that was just my
4:36
intellectual side but just to be a
4:37
dancer I wouldn't like that either
4:40
I like the multiple sides of me and I
4:42
like the stimulation and this is a great
4:45
like one day I'm all geeked out the next
4:48
day I'm all I do you know what it's
4:52
funny I've totally resonate with you
4:54
because I'm I'm totally a geek on this
4:56
side but I'm also a musician I'm a
4:57
singer and so I totally understand
5:00
having both of those things and it's
5:02
kind of a cool thing and when I asked
5:03
you what your why is for doing this you
5:06
talked about your creative outlet let's
5:07
talk a little bit about that yeah I
5:09
think especially you know I was 38 when
5:12
this happened I've noticed a lot of my
5:14
girlfriends hit this around 40 they
5:16
suddenly they're either their family's
5:18
grown enough to be independent or their
5:20
career has been well worked over and now
5:23
they want to like I did express
5:26
themselves in a certain way differently
5:28
and I really wanted to like do something
5:31
more and this is what I chose I mean I
5:35
am 511 and somehow it it I was drawn
5:37
towards work but you know like it could
5:40
be anything it could be marathons or
5:42
pottery or whatever you know or learning
5:44
to code in blockchain you know like who
5:47
knows like I think it's really fun to
5:49
pick oneself up at this time of life and
5:54
re-engage into it almost like we're
5:56
teenagers absolutely Joey Garrity says I
5:59
love dancing and got back into it
6:01
recently now I happen to know that Joey
6:02
doesn't dance for a profession but she's
6:05
doing it because it's she has a love for
6:06
it and she's eating into it she's also a
6:09
geek like us and she does so I think
6:11
there's something to be said for being
6:13
able to meld all those things so tell us
6:15
one thing that people don't know about
6:17
you we know that you have a physics
6:19
degree but tell us a little bit more
6:21
about that well that's what I did in
6:25
college I grew up overseas I wasn't
6:28
exposed to fashion at all I was in third
6:30
world countries my dad was in the United
6:32
Nations so I didn't understand fashion
6:34
or television I came back to the United
6:37
States and went to the University in
6:39
that was the biggest place I'd ever been
6:41
in my life right and and then my dad's
6:44
an engineer like we just it was just
6:47
sort of what was expected and I loved
6:49
science and I majored in physics and I
6:52
actually was planning to get my PhD but
6:54
then you know life takes its turns I got
6:56
distracted but but I love science it's
6:59
like the physics is the most basic
7:01
science of them all it only sits
7:03
directly on top of math so it's very
7:05
pure it's a very beautiful thing and I'm
7:09
listening you're going it's gobbly
7:10
to me because it's science is not the
7:12
science is not my strong suit but you
7:14
just walked the runway somewhere tell us
7:17
where you knew in February for the first
7:20
time in my life I was in Paris Fashion
7:22
Week on the runway and I because I had a
7:25
designer friend here that said hey I'm
7:27
gonna show my line in Paris will you
7:29
come and walk for me and I thought she
7:31
was kidding I mean because I'm 48 years
7:33
old like who's gonna ask a 48 year old
7:35
woman to go to Paris she said no
7:37
Jacqueline I'm serious like she's very
7:39
progressive as a designer and doesn't
7:41
care about these age things and she
7:44
knows I have a beautiful walk and she's
7:46
like just come and do it nice and I
7:48
reckon there and off I went I ended up
7:50
walking for three different designers
7:52
and it was an amazing experience and
7:56
it's the kind of thing that I used to
7:57
look at videos from Paris Fashion Week
7:59
and go I'm so sorry I missed that
8:01
when I was younger like that's so
8:03
beautiful and then Here I am in it and
8:06
I'm like oh my god this is the most
8:07
amazing moment ever so I really enjoyed
8:11
my high I'm like living vicariously
8:13
through you right now I have to tell you
8:15
first of all you know I said you'd be
8:16
there the show started you are stunning
8:18
you are absolutely stunning and you are
8:21
you are walking a walking representation
8:24
just watch me right I am going to do
8:26
this don't tell me I can't do this so
8:29
what tip what one tip would you like to
8:31
share with our viewers that might help
8:33
them a little bit well my approach to
8:38
this I think is the probably the easiest
8:41
way to start something if you're there
8:43
and you want to start singing or pottery
8:45
classes or painting or a business I did
8:50
not put any pressure on myself I just
8:52
start small I don't have to compete with
8:55
anyone I'm just gonna do it for my own
8:58
enjoyment and every little tiny step
9:01
that I took brought me further down the
9:04
path so a hundred different times if I
9:08
had said oh my god I'm not as thin as
9:10
so-and-so I'm not as pretty asan so I'm
9:12
not as young as so and so it cetera et
9:14
cetera I would have just stopped so I
9:16
just didn't allow myself to compare to
9:19
anyone and I did what I loved to do and
9:22
now I have this whole thing going which
9:24
is an actual second career which
9:26
sometimes I can't even believe that it
9:28
happened but it did and that was from
9:31
just I would recommend doing it like
9:32
that start small just do it because you
9:35
like it not because you have to be
9:37
Beyonce as a singer you know just we're
9:40
so competitive just start and just be
9:44
gentle with yours and Joe as Joey says
9:46
enjoy the journey yeah absolutely enjoy
9:49
the journey now I know that you started
9:50
a blog around this and I'm gonna put
9:53
your blog up here it's it's right here
9:54
on the on the screen yellow brick runway
9:58
com what what will people expect to get
10:02
on your blog what are they going to read
10:03
about well I have different sections so
10:06
one section is called collaborations
10:08
which is where I show what I do with my
10:12
friends because technically a model of
10:14
my age is not supposed to do high
10:16
fashion shoots so we do our own because
10:20
I'm never gonna be hired for that you
10:22
know so we make our own I've done
10:24
magazine covers through this so that's
10:26
the collaborations and they show all the
10:28
challenges that we have in these little
10:30
projects and then I have a diary section
10:33
where I talk about my learning to model
10:36
because it was actually quite a task to
10:38
learn how to do it and then I have some
10:40
other things on like fashion and diet
10:43
tips so yeah a little a little bit of
10:44
everything well I you know what you're
10:47
an inspiration I think to to women
10:49
everywhere whatever age they are that
10:52
you're never too old or too young to do
10:54
anything you are a perfect example of
10:56
the little white line that you're not
10:58
going to be told that a particular thing
11:00
you can or cannot do you're going to
11:02
March to your own drum so check out the
11:06
know that you have a way to opt in on
11:08
the on the site so that you can get
11:10
notifications when you have a new post
11:11
up and all those great things I really
11:13
encourage you to do that and I also
11:15
encourage our viewers to go check you
11:16
out and follow you on Instagram at
11:18
yellow-brick runway and they can also
11:21

11:24
search yellow brick runway and it will
11:26
show up and I know that Jacqueline is
11:28
going to be delighted to communicate
11:30
with you and respond back in any way you
11:32
want if you're here on replay make sure
11:34
you put your post down there because
11:35
we'll come back and we'll respond to
11:37
your your questions and your all the
11:40
different things that you talked talked
11:41
about we've got Susan Jacobs she's
11:43
giving you a hand you know because
11:47
here's the thing I mean this is really
11:48
exciting and I think that is women if we
11:51
were if if we just look to you and
11:53
people like you I had Cindy Joseph on
11:55
the show a couple weeks ago
11:57
she's 67 and she's walking the runway
11:59
and this is what's happening so we are
12:01
never ever ever going to be tool to do
12:04
this right mm-hmm right and it is
12:07
crossed yes I'm sure Susan says love
12:11
this never too old and saying you can't
12:13
means oh yeah watch me that's right
12:16
watch me any last thoughts you want to
12:18
share with our viewers before we start
12:20
to close down you know what I just
12:23
encourage everyone to not be limited
12:26
like just if there's something you
12:27
really want to do or start go ahead
12:29
whose permission do you really need I
12:32
mean really you just don't just go ahead
12:37
so yeah exactly exactly thank you thank
12:40
you thank you for those of you who have
12:42
