1:09

1:15

1:20
use the hashtag little white light that's how we're going to be able to track you and find you and make sure
1:26
that you are there so without further ado let's talk about what's going to
1:34
happen today today's question is what's it's like being a woman in a man's world breaking through the glass thing and
1:41
today I'm so excited to welcome captain sandy young you may know her as the
1:47
captain from Bravo's hit series below deaf Mediterranean she has over 27 years
1:53
of leading yacht charters all around the world and captain sandy is one of a handful of female captains of the
1:59
yachting industry he's weathered it all from being chased down by pirates to
2:05
containing major fires onboard she's also survived a life-threatening motorcycle accident and even
2:12
answer her undeniable resilience in brilliance have helped move her to the
2:17
top of her industry and yet I also think that you're gonna find her to be humble thoughtful a visionary and who is
2:25
passionate about giving back and having lots of fun so without further ado
2:31
captain sandy yon welcome to the show thank you very much really happy to be
2:36
here I love the introduction well you know I could have gone on and on quite frankly
2:42
because you were very very accomplished and and I've already told you multiple times how much you inspire me by
2:48
everything that you've done and I like to start the show right now I'm just gonna jump right in sandy what is your
2:54
little white lie Oh bye my little white lie is I think that I can still do the
3:00
things that I could do when I was 12 15 years old and I really can't so I want
3:07
to jump offense you know I want to run like I was well I like and sandy I think
3:18
you're freezing a little bit over there so I'm gonna ask sandy to go ahead and
3:23
refresh her screen and come back in and as we're doing that I want to say hello
3:28
to all of the people that are down here in the comments over here we have some
3:34
great comments ahoy captain sandy yep let's go put that up I love that and
3:41
sandy will be coming back in I'm gonna go ahead and bring her into the broadcast right now and she's back all
3:51
right now it's really bad weather here so hopefully I don't freeze anymore but I'm late do we have very patient people
3:58
and people do understand it so we're only as good as our technology today so let's talk about your little white lie
4:04
you got cut off okay so my little white lie is is I'm 52 and I still think I'm 12 and my sister
4:11
can attest to this because every time I want to meet her it's always at Disney World and I don't know it's like I just
4:18
really want to be able to you know have the energy of a 12 year old so I continue to move like that and I just
4:24
simply can I love that I love that I want to be 12 - no not so much not so much the energy
4:30
energy the energy of a 12 year old so you know before we dive into the question let's talk about the elephant
4:36
in the room this show was supposed to happen last Tuesday and you got called by the powers that be right Bravo sent
4:42
you over to a really great show what happens live right watch what happens
4:47
live with Andy Cohen and now you're sliding into my couch that's very cool but I have a question I'm sure our
4:52
listeners want to know what was it like being on Andy Cohen show it was phenomenal
4:58
the best part was meeting Anthony Hall who I grew up with watching him you know
5:05
Lance national vacation Chevy Chase Sixteen Candles Breakfast Club meeting
5:12
him was amazing and then Andy of course yeah he things like a really cool guy he
5:18
was very cool very humble so I have a question to ask you because you actually
5:24
are a woman in a man's world what is it like being a woman in the man's world and is it I mean you feel like there's a
5:31
glass ceiling did you break the glass ceiling how do you feel about this yes
5:38
you know I fell into it I was a kid that was lost and I had an owner who believed
5:45
in me and I didn't think about it I just went for it because I only worked on one vessel as I advanced in my career I
5:53
found it difficult to move oh hey listen I was turned down for a couple of jobs
5:59
because I was a woman and I thought why I'm great at navigating it's a skill set
6:04
I learned it and I'm also great with decision-making so I wasn't I was curious why I was turned down for the
6:12
position because I was female and I think it's psychological so how did you respond respond to something like that I
6:19
mean because that that's kind of like you're not you can't change you're a woman and more power to us as women
6:25
right so did you get mad did you did you just walk away I mean how do you respond
6:30
to something like that the yacht manager was honest with me he could have been dishonest and said they found another
6:36
captain but he told me why which I was very grateful so I didn't take it out on him and I
6:42
thought wow I guess we just need to go back in and re-educate the people who
6:48
think that a woman can't do this and so I reached out to a friend of mine and we had a women in yachting seminar at the
6:56
Monaco yacht Yacht Club well that's that's pretty cool that's pretty cool so guys I'm
7:03
trying something different this time I'm going to put up a frame that says it's
7:09
time for a comment and I'm looking through the comments right now and I'm gonna throw up a comment and put it
7:15
right on the screen and let's see what the comment is she says Kat says I'm so
7:21
curious what are some of your go to inner game tools to keep yourself moving forward why go to inner game tools are
7:29
everything I learned after I stopped drinking which was stop breathe and
7:38
think of the best solution so every time I don't react I just stop and take a
7:44
breath and I think about what's gonna be my end result a lot of times say I'm in
7:49
a navigation situation where I lose the bow thruster or the engine I have
7:55
clients watching me that's when I just take a breath and I think I have to do
8:00
it and so I do it that's awesome I see that we have some guests down below that
8:05
actually want to come on live with you you're good with that right we're gonna press of course so I'm notifying I'm bringing in Joey
8:13
Garrity and she's just popped into the show I'm gonna go ahead and put us on three and Joey Joey is a visibility at
8:22
an influence the influencers this woman is she rocks and Joey what's your question for sandy
8:33
can Joe it Joey can you hear me I can't hear Joey we can't hear Joey okay I'm
8:40
telling me to drop her off and she's got to work on her microphone and I'm gonna go ahead and let's bring in Lauren
8:46
Solomon Lauren's coming in hey Lauren
8:51
hi there can you hear me we can hear you I'm home I have sinned Cindy
8:57
so Lauren is an image and stylist for lack of a better word sheet it's the
9:03
whole thing she does the whole thing and I know that the two we got a great question for Sandy which a question so
9:09
my question is in the in terms of a glass ceiling did you actually find that it was always men you were challenged by
9:17
or were there other women who didn't necessarily support your advancement I
9:22
found that some women were jealous which is you know not great but oftentimes I
9:31
don't know like for me I did I really didn't think about it being male or female all I did was I kept my eye on
9:38
the ball I knew what my goal was and I never looked side to side when I found
9:43
if I was docking a boat where I found it was most comical is all the men would run outside and watch it so I kind of
9:51
blew a kiss or winked at them and what can they do so I doctor both I think they were
9:58
waiting for me to crash it's very funny having been a passenger on boats where
10:03
the men weren't doing such a great job of docking I would have to think twice
10:10
absolutely thank you so much for your question Lauren I'm gonna drop you back down into the lobby and um you know I
10:17
was on the show the first season I was on below deck méditerranée on the first season and I remember so many things
10:22
like we were called the Golden Girls and you know and one of the things that really strikes me is that we had to wait
10:28
to the end to actually watch the show to see what they actually were going to put on the television and we found out after
10:37
the fact that there was another cast member that we never met because he was sick
10:43
and apparently gone to the hospital and so when the show started coming out I remember all of us ladies the Golden
10:50
Girls kept saying who is that because he wasn't there so were there situations
10:55
like that for you where now you're watching the show and you're saying I don't even I don't know how they did
11:02
that absolutely not because I am in the
11:08
middle all the time and I'm a people person so I go down in the crew mess I
11:13
have dinner with the crew or breakfast I like to see their eyes in the morning I like to know their mood and if I see
11:20
that they're down I'll talk to them so I always want my crew to be happy I have crew a happy boat a happy client
11:27
and I'm a captain and a happy captain and and all that I read about you and I
11:33
know that our viewers probably could put the comments up there about that as well they talked about you being strong but
11:40
but compassionate and and that you that you you're you're a woman and and that's that's one of the things that I think is
11:46
really interesting I think as a woman you probably bring something slightly different to the table because you're a
11:52
woman what do you think about that absolutely I yes and you know I'm gonna
11:58
just kick it back to my sister because as I watch her in her setting and she's
12:03
so kind and gentle and soft and but yeah it runs this amazing school with all
12:10
these people under her for me I'm at sea I have these crew and I think women are
12:19
great at multitasking I think we're more compassionate we actually see the big picture whereas men
12:27
or more you know they have they have those blinders on yeah my experience
12:33
that I've noticed so yeah I think we're better leaders I think we need a woman president I owe everybody who agrees
12:40
raise your hand okay guys I think it's time for another comment I'm gonna bring
12:47
one up so actually this is a comment from Jill
12:54
Thomas who says captain sandy yon we love that you always give back what passions or charities do you love to get
13:01
back to oh my gosh could I not have planned this even better so I was going
13:06
to bring this up later but since this has been asked I'm going to go ahead and I'm gonna bring us back in and I am
13:13
going to remove this because let's talk about what you're passionate about you have a special passion and you already
13:20
mentioned it with your sister but let's just jump in what are you passionate about JSA my sister's school so I saw my
13:29
sister take her you know her son was born with diagnosed with autism switch
13:36
her career path which she had a great I think she was a top analyst for Johnson & Johnson or senior analyst I'm not sure
13:43
somewhere I know she had a great career path she left her career for fear for
13:49
her child and started a school with two students to see what she's done with her
13:55
own child from Nick was a runner Nick he was well let's just say I was tasting
14:02
Nick a lot to today where he actually looks you in the eye and the
14:08
transformation she's made in his life and other other families lives and how she helps the community I'm behind her
14:15
so that's and at this point she's outgrown her school and she needs to
14:21
build a bigger school she gains property so we have to raise the money for that and that's my that is exactly what I'm
14:26
going to do with this platform and we're going to help you because I'm going to actually put a link up here and I'll put
14:32
it into the description after the show this is a place that you can go make a donation a small a large however
14:38
whatever your heart says to you click the link and go make a donation to help
14:44
this and one of the things that I want to do right now is bring in another
14:49
person from our community her name is April Roga hi April hi hi April so one
14:59
of the reasons that I'm glad April decided to come and join us is that she has a
15:05
autistic child who's seven years old and you know she understands the challenges
15:10
and was very very excited to meet you I know because of what you're doing with
15:15
your sister school so April what's your question I just wanted to find out more
15:21
about what you're doing not just with your sister school but to connect the
15:27
parents together that are maybe struggling to get out there in the world
15:34
they're so isolated and like you said your sisters son is a runner so a lot of
15:41
parents are stuck at home and they don't really have community you know that's a
15:47
really good question because I've witnessed my sister and her husband their lives are dedicated to their child
15:53
Michelle's created these programs that allow and that's actually her goal is to
16:02
create this life span program with her school so parents can actually get out of their house leave their child at the
16:08
school I don't really they know I witnessed and
16:15
so I just watched how passionate she does to helping other families like yourself and I guarantee you she could answer
16:22
that question a lot better than I can so Miss Michelle its Michelle is actually watching the show today if you want to
16:29
put a comment up into the screen I will I will look for it and pop it up thank
16:34
you so much April for joining the show I'm going to drop you on out and I'm
16:39
also going to add Kim Harris to the show I'm you guys you're just making me so
16:45
happy to have so many people that have showed up to talk to this amazing woman
16:50
Kim Kim Harris what question hi Cindy how are you hello Karen thanks for
16:57
having me sandy I'm a little curious as to what you think the you know the ideal
17:06
way to introduce what you do to more african-american women I know that you
17:14
know there are very few that even know that they have an opportunity to get into this field and so I'm just
17:21
interested to hear your insight on that through Facebook life experiences like
17:28
this I was on Steve Harvey I was on The Steve Harvey Show he also asked that same question and I thought by being on
17:34
your show I'm able to reach out to every viewer that's watching this and say guess what this is an industry that's
17:40
not closed it's actually open for anyone who wants to get into the maritime world
17:45
in fact we have a deficit of crew with the boats the amount of vessels that are
17:50
being built today and it's it's an amazing industry and it's just not working on a boat there are designers
17:57
naval architects and you don't have to be a college graduate to go to this you
18:02
know there it's sort of vocational training and I'm not a college graduate in fact I was kicked out of high school
18:09
so I was one of those this industry I would say just grabbed me held me and
18:17
molded me to the first I am today and it's awesome I have to say I feel like I'm in the best industry in the world
18:23
because the people were such a it's a big industry they're close and that's
18:32
the beautiful thing awesome Thank You sandy that's a great question Thank You Kim I'm going to drop you on
18:38
out and we're gonna continue the conversation I have a question so have you ever been discriminated against were
18:43
you just I know you you mentioned one scenario earlier but do you feel that
18:49
things that you do that you're going to be discriminated against any situations
18:54
I'm sure because I was female do I was I aware of it only when the manager told
19:01
me other than that no they're very good at hiding it so when when we talk about
19:07
breaking the glass ceiling breaking through the glass ceiling I've had people that literally have never heard
19:12
that expression before they don't get you know does that really mean there's a glass ceiling that it's an expression
19:20
guys it doesn't mean there's actually a glass ceiling but what does that mean to you sandy when we talk about breaking
19:25
through the glass ceiling and the things that you feel that you've done that actually has done that
19:33
hey listen I just stayed focused and I
19:39
still don't today even is the sound of yeah we're getting I think the storm keeps coming and going and every time
19:45
you get a whoosh of wind or something your connection but you're okay you're good okay every time I just stay focused on my
19:53
priorities and yes people question me people challenge me I just keep my eye
19:59
on the ball that's what I do I don't really care what they think how I'm in fact like I was on bravotv.com this
20:06
morning one of the questions was it's similar to this and I thought okay I
20:12
don't actually think about male or female I just think about I have a job to do and I do it and whoever gets in my way I
20:20
try to navigate around that and that's really what I do I just want to say if you want to get in this industry Google
20:28
Maritime schools that's all you have to do and then just sign up and there's one
20:35
take that class sandy as your toe I'm
20:41
gonna ask you to refresh yourself again because now your sound is completely gone go ahead and marry so I'm gonna
20:46
just get off of it okay maybe it is the head piece but you have
20:52
to unplug it then now we can't hear you at all and she's out
21:01
okay so in the meantime I'm going to take a question or actually a comment something that she doesn't actually have
21:07
to respond to and here's a question now
21:16
here it is actually it's more of a comment Michelle and Michelle is sandy
21:22
sister and she writes thank you Karen for highlighting captain sandy as Bravos first female captain it's my pleasure
21:29
Michelle and again thank you for sharing your sister with us because we are hoping to raise some funds for the Owls
21:35
hunt for the Fort Lauderdale Alzheimer's I'm sorry Jacksonville school of autism
21:41
you guys live in Portland okay and I'm waiting to see here she is I'm bringing
21:46
her back in and she's did you hear me
21:53
we can hear you free so I'm gonna bring in another guest uh let's see who we got
21:59
here we have Lisa Lamont coming in sandy can you hear us yes I can hi Lisa hello
22:07
hi Sandy hi Carol thank you for giving me a chance to come on Lisa's a psychic no I'm curious to find
22:14
out what your question is Lisa well my question is were you a tomboy growing
22:20
that because I find a lot of the women who are successful in their 40s 50s and 60s were and so that was my question for
22:27
you of course I was I like I mean you know we grew up in the country and yeah
22:35
I worked as a kid and then my parents divorced when I was 8 and and then I you
22:41
know was back and forth with my dad the summer my mom you know school time but yes awesome
22:48
we were child slaves as kids yes I think and what was it like seeing yourself on
22:54
on the television when the when the show aired what was it like seeing yourself on screen I was surprised how calm I am
23:03
and it made me feel really confident actually wow I haven't really well and
23:08
you did like the fact that I'm not a Yeller I don't fire people I believe in
23:14
that I believe it takes an effort I think it takes more energy and effort to to not
23:19
fire someone and you know shift their way of being then it is say out of
23:25
you're out of here love that well Beth thank you Lisa for joining us I'm going to bring one more person in and then
23:32
we're going to finish up the the broadcast I have some other things to share with you we're bringing in Susan Jacobs hey Susan
23:40
how you doing I'm great thank you nice to meet you captain sandy so and I'm
23:45
having a storm here too so hopefully can hear me so and I love that you're all about ask for help I think that's
23:51
wonderful so I'm an image and wardrobe consultant and I wondered because I read
23:56
that you were worried at some point about being taken seriously what will I have to do did you find on your way up
24:03
did you ever have to compromise the fact that you are a beautiful woman in terms
24:09
of being seen being heard and sort of not start of keeping the shadows the
24:14
fact that you are a woman in terms of physicality oh my god yes you know I'm
24:20
just gonna give an example of the red Spitfire we took the boat to Italy very
24:26
macho country and I'm at the head of the table there probably 15 men surrounding
24:33
the table we're negotiating the it's a 5 million euro deal to shipyard owner
24:40
would never address me so I just said okay and get his attention so I stood up I said I'm this meetings over because
24:49
you are actually not even addressing the person who makes the decision so when you if you want to do that they give me
24:56
a call otherwise I'm going to the shipyard Alfa marine which is next door oh he's switching their you who
25:08
is one of those yeah totally thank you great question great question thank you
25:13
Susan I'm gonna actually pop up another question because um let's find this and
25:23
I'm going to solo it
25:29
so this is from April Roga hearing captain sandy speak about the challenges
25:34
that her sister has faced with her son and wanting to have more time to invest to help her son brought tears to my eyes
25:40
before I came on the screen to ask the question my dream in life is to leave my 8 to 5 job and be a full-time
25:45
entrepreneur so I can work more with my nonverbal son and it's like your sisters
25:51
that's gonna help yes and honestly I was about to cry
25:58
so I just said it's like shift gears because I didn't want to cry because I just believe in my sister so much and
26:06
and your sister Michelle Dunham I mean she has just moved mountains to do what
26:12
she's doing and I want to thank you for being on today Michelle I'm gonna remove this cuz it's blocking our faces and I
26:19
put the link in the chat so if you scroll down the links there and then after the show I'll put the link to
26:25
donate up above as well if you want to stay in touch with captain sandy we have
26:32
multiple ways that you can follow here on social media you can follow her on facebook at facebook.com forward slash
26:39
the low deck cap sandy you can see it up there and if you want to follow her on
26:46
is this your Twitter or your Instagram when Sandra and one sandy that's my Twitter so this is Twitter go ahead and
26:54
tweet sandy because I know personally that she if you put her in you tagged
26:59
her she's gonna tag you back and she's gonna respond she is she really understands what connection and
27:06
relationships are about on social media I firsthand have experienced it so go ahead and try it out you're going to be
27:11
surprised and if you want to go visit her on Instagram it's at captain Sandra
27:17
Yan that's a little bit different so do that and any last thoughts that you want
27:25
to share with our audience you know I am going to do this I believe tour I don't
27:32
know I got a website it's captain sandy on comm and yeah
27:37
because I'm gonna go around the country speaking about how I became the up captain just like and you're gonna do
27:44
that through this I believe right that's correct because like my sister like me
27:49
anyone that really believes that they can do it and that's what I love about this country because I've visited a lot
27:56
of countries is that America is a great country and I love that we are given the
28:03
opportunity to believe in anything and whatever we believe in we can do and I just watched that movie oh my god it's a
28:11
war movie about this guy where he doesn't carry a weapon pack shan-pak saw
28:16
Ridge XL Ridge I want a airplane and he believed he believed in people and he
28:23
just kept saving lives and so I don't know that's sort of where I am and the I believe to her I love it I love it and
28:30
we're hoping that we're going to bring captain sandy up along the coast of
28:35
California because I know she's going to be down in San Diego for a while and I know she's going to come up here to Napa
28:41
because well you know there's wine and you know there's wine so we're gonna be getting her up here so if you want to
28:47
just make sure you keep your eyes peeled on the stuff that I put out there because that is going to be happening and I just realized sandy I never did my
28:54
reveal so I have to do the reveal I'm gonna turn my head like this okay
29:00
and you can now see that that it's growing even longer my husband but I
29:05
want to show you this is actually kind of funny and I've always done this very transparently I actually have dark hair
29:10
