0:03
Hello everybody welcome back it's our
0:06
special New Year's episode and we're
0:08
excited I can't believe the year's
0:10
ending I'm Mel and I'm
0:13
Karen and we've been thinking about so
0:16
many different things Karen we have we
0:19
have but first cheers
0:24
cheers and we're drinking out of our
0:26
goino glasses you would not know sitting
0:30
where you are out there guys that this
0:32
is not glass this is plastic BPA non-bpa
0:36
plastic dishwasher we love it I mean we
0:39
have it we'll make sure to put a link
0:41
down in the copy but this stuff is so
0:43
good it's so good thank you thank you
0:46
Vino because it has the little thumb
0:48
right yeah make sure you get the right
0:50
one if you're gonna if you're gonna get
0:52
these These are the best goinos ever
0:54
Karen what have we been thinking about
0:56
this week so much with the end of the
1:01
as I where did the I I say this every
1:03
day where did the time go how did we get
1:06
here and I and it you know we've talked
1:08
about in the last couple of shows
1:10
appreciating every minute because time
1:12
is just going so fast and here we are at
1:15
the end of the year agre it's the end
1:17
are you going to be celebrating I know
1:19
I'm going to be celebrating a small
1:20
little celebration but I'm celebrating
1:22
and we laugh all the time because you
1:24
celebrate different than I celebrate I'm
1:26
paper plates and and you know paper cups
1:30
that's me you're not you do something
1:33
different well one thing that we do like
1:35
whether whether you're using paper
1:37
plates or Crystal it doesn't matter but
1:39
you are welcoming people into your home
1:42
to enjoy a special time and you're
1:45
specifically enjoying being with them
1:47
and that's what that's what's important
1:49
and you food whether you cater it or
1:52
create it yourself um we found that
1:56
um snacking foods are best and you and I
1:59
love shakery boards we do great way and
2:02
and we made a really fun one together I
2:04
think Karen you're going to show that
2:06
I'm going to show it right now here we
2:21
go oh I was really fun about that is
2:24
that I I'm I can't do that crap like not
2:27
that person but you don't have to be
2:29
have however you do it and I wanted to
2:31
share this I saw the coolest thing on
2:33
Instagram this week it's a board I don't
2:36
have the link I'm sorry but you can
2:38
probably Google it it literally it's a
2:41
beautiful wood board and it has like the
2:44
layout so you just put like olives here
2:47
I saw that I saw that I thought that was
2:50
the coolest thing if you really wanted
2:51
to to you know decorate it but I mean
2:53
I've seen ones that that are like
2:55
Christmas trees or snowmen and they're
2:57
so creative and thematic shut boards yes
3:00
it makes it really fun so I think again
3:02
that speaks to being being authentic
3:04
being who you are and getting as
3:06
creative and exotic as you want to or
3:08
just throw it all on like throw it all
3:10
on on the plate doesn't yeah it doesn't
3:13
matter whether you do fancy or you don't
3:15
I mean I I always do a shakuri board
3:17
during the holidays at least twice um
3:20
because we tend to snack just like you
3:22
know we don't do these big meals we
3:24
would prefer to just you know touch this
3:27
foot and just do this and just eat it um
3:30
and in our case we do we do all the
3:32
meats and the cheeses because that is
3:33
something that my family loves but I saw
3:35
one it was a taco shakery board I like
3:39
dessert ones some morees I mean that's
3:42
that's oh yeah oh might have to try that
3:45
and it's so easy between Pinterest and
3:46
Instagram and you can really see people
3:49
who have really done the work and then
3:50
you can just make it your own and
3:53
another thing that's really fun is to
3:54
try out new drinks over the holidays um
3:57
Mel you actually recorded um a making a
4:00
drink it was a bourbon
4:03
smash cloves oh it's fabulous so take a
4:17
look that's from te and Gerard the Half
4:20
Baked Harvest which you know is one of
4:22
my go-to books and it's super simple and
4:25
super yummy but today I'm drinking wine
4:28
from our one of our favorite wine
4:30
Partners hall Hall winery uh love Hall
4:34
winery you know we'll put links on all
4:37
that stuff down in the copy down there
4:38
if you want to go check out um some of
4:40
our favorite wines um and some of the
4:43
other things that we've been been
4:44
chatting about do you have traditions we
4:47
do um I mean typically New Year's this
4:50
will be the first year we're not going
4:52
to a bowl game I mean even after Dylan
4:54
graduated we still our friends that we
4:57
support um who our coaches um and last
5:00
year was the best one oh my God TCU
5:02
played at the Fiesta Bowl and it was
5:04
kind of like the Super Bowl for all of
5:06
us up in Phoenix and it was really fun
5:08
but we're not doing a bowl game this
5:10
year and it's it's gonna be kind of
5:12
weird I'm kind of excited because we're
5:15
going on a new adventure that I'll share
5:17
next month but um usually it's related
5:20
to family we we're always
5:22
together so we have two Traditions one
5:26
is my tradition I make uh lotas I make
5:28
potato pancakes every year I do it
5:30
outside New Years not for New Years
5:33
right right well actually yes I do it
5:35
for New Years and the reason why I do it
5:36
for new years's um is because I make
5:39
little caviar Shooters and that is
5:41
making little potato pancakes a little
5:44
crem fresh and some caviar oh I want to
5:48
come my God it's all I claims are not
5:51
very bougie cavar on New Year I know and
5:54
you pop them because they're like tiny
5:56
things but I tend to make them over the
5:58
holidays normally Hanukkah you know is
6:00
is later this year we've already had it
6:02
but I will make these little little
6:04
caviar Shooters and I but I make them
6:06
Outdoors ask me why I make them
6:08
outo I have an electric fry pan and I
6:11
make them Outdoors because literally the
6:13
house smells like potatoes onions and
6:15
oil for a month right after you make
6:18
them and as much as I like it the day of
6:20
I don't want to smell I wear a shower I
6:22
literally put a shower cap on take
6:24
pictures and show that I will I will do
6:27
that the second tradition that we have
6:30
and Michael and I have been doing this
6:31
every year for as long as I can remember
6:33
we have this little glass jar has a
6:35
cover on it it's a one of those canning
6:37
jars so it has an opening at the top but
6:41
still and we have a little pad of little
6:44
notes note paper and during the year we
6:48
write notes to each other I love you
6:50
thank you for doing this whatever it is
6:52
and we create this Jar full of kindness
6:55
is what I call it Jar full of kindness
6:58
and at the end of the year on New Year's
6:59
Eve we open up the jar and we read them
7:03
back and forth to each other Karen I
7:06
love that beautiful it's fun it's fun
7:10
well and I think it's really because you
7:13
probably do those spontaneously through
7:15
the year and then to go back and have
7:18
that time together and sit and it's fun
7:21
it's definitely fun it's memorable and
7:24
if you keep them from year to year oh
7:27
wow it's really do do you date oh yeah
7:31
oh yeah yeah we put the date sometimes
7:34
so you could go back to like
7:36
1990 and and see where you were as a
7:39
couple family and oh what a great idea
7:42
what we appreciated about each other and
7:44
has that changed has it not changed you
7:47
know because our lives have changed um
7:49
and so that's always fun to do and it's
7:51
a really it's a great family activity
7:52
too for that matter it doesn't just
7:54
that's one of those things it doesn't
7:55
have to be just husband and wife or
7:57
partner and partner it we play games too
8:01
and I'm thinking that because I just
8:02
picked up a couple we love games board
8:04
games and card games that's a really fun
8:07
thing to do on New Eve when the kids
8:10
were young I I've never like and maybe
8:12
it's because I bartended in college I
8:14
hate going to bars on New Year's Eve New
8:16
Year's Eve and St Patrick's Day I always
8:17
used to say those are amateur days I
8:19
don't like to go to parties on New
8:21
Year's either and we would have family
8:24
parties so at our friends with all the
8:26
kids and do things with the children
8:29
as and other families and that would be
8:31
the New Year celebration and that was
8:33
always nice too that's that's awesome I
8:36
again it's all about making memories
8:38
yeah it's all about making me and again
8:40
it's all F it's families can do this
8:42
this is not just for you know you your
8:45
families can play games your families
8:46
can do a jar your families can do a lot
8:48
of things jar would be really fun for
8:50
families too because kids you could
8:51
trace like what's going on in their
8:54
lives as they grow that's a beautiful
8:56
start or like we we we have have those
8:59
leaves remember you got those leaves the
9:01
for decorations speak smaller ones have
9:05
those and let people write their notes
9:06
on that and then put that in there you
9:08
can also papier-mâché the jar if you're
9:10
going to do a kid activity there's so
9:12
many things to do um it's about creating
9:16
experience yeah absolutely and that's
9:19
what this season has been this whole
9:21
month has been trying
9:23
to Wade through and not let the
9:26
overwhelm get to us and enjoy en these
9:29
memories and these opportunities to
9:31
create memories and special moments with
9:34
friends so we want to say to all of you
9:38
happy New Year thank you for being a
9:41
part of our journey and we wish you only
9:43
joy and happiness and good health next
9:47
