0:54
want to introduce our guests first and
0:56
then I'll bring them into the show our
0:57
guest today as I said is Wanda Webster
1:00
and Christopher Mac Wanda is a writer
1:03
and educator she has spent the last 15
1:05
years working and powering children and
1:07
adults to make better choices in life
1:09
and at one time her curriculum was being
1:12
taught in 8 different countries Wow in
1:14
the holiday Hollywood film industry for
1:16
15 years she finds that using story and
1:19
film metaphor is an excellent way to
1:21
guide people through their own journey
1:23
of transformation much like a hero in a
1:26
film goes through and Christopher Mac is
1:29
a lead outreach worker on Skid Row as
1:32
well as a public speaker and singer and
1:35
he feels that the downtown Los Angeles
1:37
community is the greatest recovery
1:39
community in the world he's been
1:41
interviewed many times in PR LA Times
1:44
USA Today Dateline we can go on and on
1:47
but he's been interviewed about the
1:49
homeless condition and also about the
1:51
urban voices project a community choir
1:53
he co-founded five years ago to help
1:56
uplift and support people through
1:59
I am excited to welcome welcome them to
2:01
the show and without further delay
2:04
welcome to the show hey guys welcome
2:12
right oh my gosh so we just need to let
2:14
them know you know you guys are real
2:17
troopers because we got here for a half
2:19
an hour trying to get you in the show
2:21
and you're finally in and I am thrilled
2:24
and delighted that you're in the show
2:26
and so we're gonna jump into the topic
2:28
right now before you do that though is I
2:30
always like to ask people how do you
2:32
describe a super boomer now I describe a
2:35
super boomer not how they not not more
2:39
how they're not rather than how they are
2:41
a super boomer to me is somebody who
2:45
shows up in life in a particular way
2:47
they're fearless they are going to jump
2:50
into almost anything maybe anything that
2:52
would be me I jump into everything so
2:54
that's my definition of a super boomer
2:56
so guys how would you describe a super
3:00
Wanda Webster that is living their
3:08
authentic life no matter their age and
3:10
and is living authentically is not
3:13
afraid to chase and catch their dreams
3:17
possibly that they you know weren't able
3:19
to live earlier in their life I love
3:22
that answer I love that answer
3:24
Christopher anything to add about being
3:27
well they don't accept no for an answer
3:29
oh they do as long as it's practical and
3:35
it satisfies the goal and which they set
3:39
their minds to they pretty much can't
3:43
accomplish anything but they they sort
3:47
of live life happily happily happily
3:49
after happily before just happen and I
3:54
what I love that I love that as an
3:56
answer and I love the fact that first of
3:59
all you guys are on here together you
4:00
guys are the author of this really great
4:03
book called the journey within we're
4:04
gonna talk about that during the show as
4:06
well I have my own copy thank you very
4:08
much and thank you for an scribing it to
4:10
me I really appreciate that
4:12
um let's let's just talk about this why
4:15
don't you talk about making better
4:16
choices in life by going deep within and
4:19
taking responsibility for your actions
4:21
behaviors what does that actually mean
4:25
what does that entail well it entails
4:28
being truthful you know we all have this
4:31
dark side dr. Carl Jung talked about
4:34
that a lot we all have a shadow side we
4:36
all have a dark side we don't like to
4:38
see it we don't like to admit it for the
4:39
most part but it's about this this book
4:41
is about introspection about taking a
4:44
look at every aspect of yourself just
4:46
like a diamond has all those different
4:48
facets so do we and some of them aren't
4:52
and once you tip you take a look at them
4:54
and you accept them and say yes the
4:58
truth will set you free
4:59
that's hard though right it's very hard
5:02
yes we we acknowledge it's hard how do
5:09
you then do that I mean what or is there
5:11
like a trick to even just to step into
5:13
it what do you do well you have to ask
5:17
the right question if you're if you're
5:21
in confident that you're in disarray
5:23
sometimes it's like bono said you have
5:26
to be honest and you have to be truthful
5:29
but you have to be also fearless and
5:32
willing to ask the right question you
5:35
know sometimes people don't take
5:38
responsibility and say did I really do
5:40
that you know other than that the first
5:43
thing you wanted the first go to is what
5:46
somebody did to me why did they make me
5:48
do that you can only be responsible for
5:50
what if it happened to you you should
5:54
accept the biggest responsibility and
5:56
find out what your part in it is and so
5:59
if you do that you're you're more apt to
6:02
get the right answer but you have to ask
6:04
yourself the question that's
6:06
introspection you have to take you have
6:08
to ask yourself the question to take you
6:11
I was working with this with this young
6:15
lady and she was trying to have this
6:18
relationship and I was telling her that
6:21
she has to respect other people and not
6:24
only do you have to respect other people
6:26
but the boundaries is everyone has free
6:29
will but if I want something to go my
6:31
way and it doesn't I'm disappointed I'm
6:33
disappointed because of what I did what
6:36
I expected nobody did it to
6:39
so it's about taking responsibility like
6:43
Wanda said and if you take
6:45
responsibility only the truth can set
6:47
you free because you're telling yourself
6:48
the truth that's a great aunt I mean
6:51
basically what is my part in this right
6:54
how did how did we get here Rhonda I
6:56
didn't cut you off that's okay
6:58
as I say the reward even doing one time
7:02
the reward is you will feel a sense of
7:04
freedom and so that's your buy-in and to
7:07
say because it's difficult and it's
7:08
painful and we agonize over it but once
7:11
you get that taste of that freedom it
7:13
sets you free from it you know you're
7:15
not in bondage to yourself you're
7:17
becoming more whole yeah that's that's
7:20
the carrot no Michelle says love this
7:23
take responsibility thanks Michelle is a
7:27
great comment we have viewers on so
7:29
we're going to pop up some some of the
7:31
comments as we're doing the show so I'm
7:35
a singer and and Christopher I was I was
7:38
actually very in thrall did the urban
7:42
voice project and and the fact that you
7:45
talk about downtown LA community is the
7:48
greatest recovery community in the world
7:51
what is what why and your job is
7:56
fascinating the fact that you're an ear
7:58
lead outreach and on Skid Row
8:00
but why do you believe that and how did
8:03
the urban voice project come to be
8:05
because anything it has to do with music
8:06
is near and dear to my heart first of
8:10
all let me let me cover the recovery is
8:14
downtown being the largest recovery
8:16
community first of all most people are
8:20
under the impression that recovery is
8:24
own substance driven it's not the
8:27
substance is is just a it's like one of
8:32
those think byproducts of somebody
8:34
needing to recovery obsessive compulsive
8:37
behavior is addiction right and so when
8:40
you say recovery is the greatest because
8:43
when you get to Skid Row
8:44
I call it the fill of Dreams you know
8:46
all these nightmares have happened to
8:48
you in life and now all of a sudden
8:49
there is this this up
8:51
to me before the aha moment well wait a
8:53
minute maybe I can take some
8:55
responsibility for my life and start to
8:57
recreate a new life because that old one
9:00
is thoroughly burn out thoroughly trash
9:02
and so now you you starting with a clean
9:05
slate and so wouldn't say that that area
9:09
is is the largest recovery because a lot
9:12
of people have had hopes and dreams and
9:14
lost it every day and they have nothing
9:17
but to climb out and so I used to call
9:20
it the elephant graveyard where I see
9:24
the soul is a big this big massive thing
9:26
the soul and I seen people languishing
9:29
on the street well for two years when I
9:31
first started that made me cry because I
9:34
saw these people with no place to go and
9:36
hopelessness and so then I started to
9:39
see the rise of the Phoenix I started to
9:42
see people get up out of abject poverty
9:44
I abject hopelessness and I started
9:47
seeing people start making decisions to
9:49
live a better life and they came to me
9:51
and said Chris I stopped using Chris I
9:54
got an apartment Chris I'm going to
9:56
school they recreate himself
9:58
that's what recovery is about getting
10:01
back that with just lost every human
10:04
being in the world has lost the best
10:08
part of himself and that's his spiritual
10:10
life that's powerful and so how does the
10:12
music come in so you started the urban
10:14
voice project what is that and and where
10:22
well voices project started five years
10:26
ago corporate school of music is like
10:28
the Juilliard of the West and there was
10:32
a guy whose name was Bob Bob attea she's
10:35
on was on the board of Wesley and he was
10:37
on the board at the Coburn school and so
10:40
one August five years ago they said
10:43
Chris we want you to meet this guy
10:46
because because Coburn wanted to do
10:50
outreach in the community in which they
10:53
are and they're not that far from skip
10:56
row because they up there by distance
10:58
you know we're Disney Hall acquaintance
11:00
in Los Angeles and so they introduces
11:04
namely our sulfur who's a professor in
11:06
music and leav and I I was responsible
11:09
for the outreaches skip row because
11:11
that's what I do and the Lea was
11:14
responsible for introducing the music
11:16
but it was so that the engaged the
11:20
people because music being the bridge to
11:23
engage the people so that they can start
11:25
doing better health care so I work in a
11:29
clinic and so we provide medical
11:32
services for the underserved regardless
11:34
of the ability to play and Wesley was on
11:37
the field long before Obamacare hmm that
11:41
when people in Skid Row was down and
11:43
they needed some medical attention they
11:45
were just sort of West that's how they
11:47
went so we combined music and we use the
11:52
healthcare system to be able to refer
11:54
people whether they have primary care
11:57
issues whether they have dental issues
12:01
optometry issues and on Wednesday we
12:04
have a neighborhood scene so we invite
12:08
the neighborhood to come because I love
12:12
that I believe that music music is the
12:14
universal language it speaks to those
12:16
who might otherwise not hear or
12:18
understand or process what's being said
12:21
you know I meditate and I know that you
12:24
talk about meditating for five minutes a
12:26
day and that it can make a huge
12:28
difference and just changing five
12:30
limiting beliefs that can transform your
12:33
life so let's talk about those limiting
12:36
beliefs because that's what that's
12:37
actually the topic of the show today
12:39
what are some of these limiting beliefs
12:42
well okay here's an example because I
12:46
don't know what your limiting beliefs
12:48
are what anybody's limiting belief but
12:51
some of the one of the major limiting
12:53
belief is I'm not good enough yes I
12:58
think that would be universal you know
13:01
but it doesn't only come with a a
13:04
dialogue in the head but it comes with a
13:07
feeling in the emotions yeah and so you
13:10
could always tell when somebody they
13:11
don't want to look you in the eye they
13:13
have a hair down they don't want to you
13:17
participate in life and so let the
13:22
person has that limiting belief but he
13:24
got it from somewhere yes yes and so we
13:29
just take that one limiting belief then
13:32
you know if the person examined has he
13:35
ever thought that way is this what it is
13:38
this is the way I look at myself what
13:40
would believe what would be another
13:43
limiting belief I know that a lot of
13:44
people in this age a super boomer age
13:47
and maybe in all ages but we tend to
13:51
have that fraud of complex that somehow
13:53
we're gonna be found out that we don't
13:55
actually know what we know and and that
13:58
gets in the way for us moving forward
14:00
have you noticed that well yeah but here
14:03
it is you're absolutely right because
14:05
that's another limiting belief is I know
14:08
I know I know you don't
14:11
are you don't need to tell me I already
14:13
know you can't tell me something
14:15
those are limiting beliefs because they
14:17
don't allow you to participate
14:18
wholeheartedly and honestly because now
14:22
you know any help that you may have
14:24
gotten you put it aside because now your
14:27
mind's telling you already know this
14:28
right you don't why are you listening to
14:30
him you know and now you have in this
14:32
internal dialogue where you don't want
14:34
nobody tell you that that's true Wanda
14:37
what kind of limiting beliefs do you
14:39
want to throw out that you have seen out
14:42
there that you would call we're talking
14:44
about baby boomers I'm too old I'm too
14:47
old to go after this now yes I get that
14:50
all the time all right I all the time I
14:53
get and especially in the field that I'm
14:55
in in the live stream you feel people
14:58
are always saying I'm too old to do what
15:00
you're how do you do this and I look at
15:02
them and say I'm actually older than you
15:04
so it has nothing with old it's a
15:06
limiting belief that is a powerful one
15:09
yes yeah absolutely any other ones that
15:12
we can throw out because I'm putting
15:13
them up on the screen to see well well
15:16
some of the people out there okay good
15:21
question so guys if you're watching live
15:24
sure that you are can participate if you
15:27
can throw out a limiting belief put it
15:29
in the comments even if you're here on
15:31
replay let us know that it was replay
15:33
and add a limiting belief because we
15:36
want to hear from you while we're
15:38
waiting for that let's jump into your
15:40
book I'm gonna throw up
15:42
actually I'm going to throw them up on
15:43
the screen right now and I'm going to
15:48
let's talk a little bit about this whole
15:51
here we go I'm actually doing this
15:53
trying to get this okay so one of the
15:56
things that I'm that I loved about this
15:58
first of all the book is beautiful I
16:00
love the graphics I love the art on it
16:02
and it's it's intense I have to tell you
16:04
it's intense um how did this book come
16:07
about how did this book come about well
16:10
Christopher's is brilliant one he's been
16:12
doing leading recovery groups for how
16:15
I don't know 18 years or so and I
16:19
started attending groups filling up
16:22
notebooks I found it fascinating the
16:24
information and because this information
16:25
is universal yes it's not just for that
16:29
community it's it it was useful for me
16:34
well I used to have a group say I'm
16:40
coming up on 20 years of sobriety and
16:43
what happened was I got into the the out
16:46
the a a community and so the in the
16:51
anonymous community there's certain
16:52
things that you know is in the big book
16:55
of Alcoholics Anonymous and then what
16:58
I'd started to notice is in my journey
17:00
what I started to notice is that there's
17:02
a dynamics that occurs as you're
17:05
recovering you know and you start to
17:09
find out different things well there's a
17:12
statement that says our ideas our
17:14
emotions and our attitude they dominate
17:17
us and so while I was doing groups
17:19
people would come and you know
17:22
abstinence is the only way you could
17:23
stop doing a certain thing now the habit
17:27
or what regenerates the habit happens to
17:30
be you and so if you don't know yourself
17:34
then that habit continues to sneak up on
17:39
I started to think about the group I was
17:41
running was called the dynamics of
17:43
recovery and there is this certain
17:45
dynamics that occurs when you start to
17:48
recovery you started to pay attention to
17:50
things you start to notice things right
17:52
and those things start to become your
17:54
everyday it's you you started taking
17:57
advantage of experiences because a lot
17:59
of times people have experiences and
18:02
they don't let the experience guide them
18:04
in the next step so they go and look for
18:07
the new they go look for the new great
18:09
thing and that one experience that have
18:11
so much information together and guess
18:14
read it by the wayside because they
18:16
don't know they don't do no
18:19
introspection in other words when you
18:22
start to see the benefits of it you
18:24
start to operate in what is being
18:27
presented to you your experiences become
18:29
your future and that's what that's
18:31
wisdom so Michelle says another limiting
18:34
belief I don't have enough education and
18:37
as another one I don't have the
18:40
willpower yes right exactly and remember
18:44
this is a belief that starts to control
18:47
right because you continue to tell
18:49
yourself that but here's the here's the
18:52
key you will not only tell yourself that
18:54
but you start to feel the dominus of it
18:57
you start feeling down because that
18:59
belief comes in there make you feel bad
19:01
and now that belief has total control
19:03
over your life exactly so guys um we
19:08
have the book up here it's sitting in
19:10
the super boomer lifestyle store so if
19:13
you go to the super boomer lifestyle
19:15
calm you can pick it up over there
19:17
actually have a a little bit Lee a
19:19
little link that if you want to see what
19:21
this looks like I'm gonna put that in
19:23
there um let's get rid of this alright
19:26
so you can go to bit dot Lee for it
19:29
slash the journey within and the book is
19:32
there I actually think it's on sale
19:33
right now so if you click that I think
19:35
the price is actually less than that if
19:36
you click on it it'll take you into the
19:38
store and you'll see it and you can
19:39
purchase the book and I know that if you
19:42
reach out to both one Wanda and Chris
19:45
they would be happy to give you some
19:48
other information or connect with you
19:50
that I I'm gonna drop this down hold on
19:54
all right so let's let's keep going on
19:58
this let's keep going on this um how do
20:03
we transform life I mean that's that
20:05
that's the subtitle of the book is how
20:08
to create a dynamic recovery to
20:10
transform your habits and become your
20:12
authentic self so let's give a tip right
20:15
now let's give a tip what is one way
20:17
that someone can write now after
20:19
watching this show do or think or be
20:24
that will help them transform their life
20:26
other than picking up the book which
20:28
they need to do they need to go pick up
20:30
well the journaling section is powerful
20:33
because it takes you it's it's asking
20:36
you to answer some questions
20:39
you know what is the belief why do you
20:41
believe it thank you to go to the
20:43
history write it down is just freeform
20:46
journaling and you're gonna get some
20:47
answers and find is that really true is
20:51
it true or is it not true why do I have
20:54
that belief and sometimes just the
20:56
awareness will set you free
20:57
fine but one of the things that people
20:59
things do is you know sometimes what you
21:03
say to yourself can be have a profound
21:05
effect and one of the things that people
21:08
can really do is stop being so hard on
21:10
themselves it's not being so serious
21:12
because is it sometimes we are the
21:15
hardest critics of our own life and we
21:18
take ourselves so serious you know that
21:21
we forget that we forget to enjoy life
21:24
and so one of your things you do ask
21:26
yourself am I being too serious
21:28
am I being too hard on myself because
21:32
the question becomes the flashlight to
21:34
illuminate the mind you have to ask the
21:36
question and it might not work for you
21:40
today but if you continue to ask
21:42
yourself when that question comes out
21:44
take a look at the answer don't insert
21:47
the answer just look at the answer
21:50
because sometimes if you ask yourself
21:53
the right question and answer is gonna
21:56
come that's beyond your mind and that's
21:58
where we start to transform this because
22:00
we start to you start to go inside and
22:03
start to have this relationship because
22:06
everybody is beautiful on the inside but
22:10
we don't have that relationship and I
22:12
heard what you said about music but I
22:14
think music is another ingredients to
22:17
our own living to our own being and and
22:20
we forget that we live externally but we
22:26
don't know internally right we are
22:28
composed of music we might be a best
22:31
symphony that God ever produced or the
22:33
swords however you want to do it what
22:37
you're saying and it's that you have to
22:39
ask the questions but then you have to
22:40
listen to the answers I mean that is
22:42
just for me that's my aha moment and
22:45
that's gonna be my super boomer moment
22:46
when I go to that later on you do have
22:48
to ask the questions but if you ask the
22:50
questions no listen to what comes back
22:52
there's no point right I want to know
23:01
why you do this why do you do this how
23:04
did you guys meet and why did why did
23:06
you want to do this I think that's your
23:11
cue Wanda you know we both that's our
23:21
number-one priorities our spiritual life
23:23
why do we do it because I think the
23:27
worst thing possible is to live an
23:30
unexamined life yeah because then you're
23:33
not better than 10 years ago you're not
23:37
better than yesterday you're not better
23:38
than when you were a child
23:40
agreed come over this way why do you why
23:44
do you do it why do i why do you do and
23:50
then we have to listen to the okay
24:00
we don't even know human beings you know
24:07
if you take off the wrapping we're all
24:11
the same underneath yeah and there's
24:14
this biology that says we're a human
24:17
you know we need to stop lying to
24:19
ourselves and I think that when we start
24:22
to join and become a human family I
24:25
think like it's better regardless of
24:27
what the outside condition as they
24:29
inhabit we have this love for each other
24:32
expand I want to thank you I know we got
24:36
off to a hectic start because of all our
24:38
technology and I want to thank you for
24:40
hanging in there with us so that you
24:41
could actually get on the show because
24:43
this is an important topic it's an
24:45
important subject and I want to remind
24:47
people again that they can go pick up
24:49
your book in the super boomer lifestyle
24:52
dot-com hello there we go I'm gonna drop
24:56

25:02
with our audience the only thing I like
25:10
to share with you know is learn to know
25:13
yourself to love yourself regardless you
25:17
know because you know you can become
25:20
your own best friend
25:21
Amen Wanda any last words no III there's
25:28
a gift there's a gift with introspection
25:30
whether you use our book or your own
25:33
tools your own questions there's a gift
25:35
in that and that gift is that beautiful
25:37
soul that you have and to just clear
25:41
away the garbage that you don't need
25:43
that you don't need that let your soul
25:45
and your spirit shine brightly you know
25:48
in this woman it's neither too late it's
25:49
not too late guys if you'd like to get
25:52

26:14

26:17
about the book go pick up the book I'm
26:19

26:22

26:24
you already know it okay because I
26:26
already gave it away so I'm gonna drop
26:28
you dinner guys I want to thank for for
26:31
your energy I know that you're doing
26:33
great work out there and just keep on
26:35
keeping the likewise thank you thanks
26:38
guys so this is my super boomer moment
26:41
you know it's interesting it's
26:44
interesting because I always like you
26:48
know grab the content that comes in and
26:50
grab the information that comes in but
26:52
when you guys made a mention about
26:54
asking the questions but then you have
26:57
to listen to the answers it seemed so
26:59
simple I mean that's like the obvious
27:01
right why are you asking questions if
27:04
you're not gonna pay attention to the
27:05
answers that come back and so for me I
27:08
think that is such an important aspect
27:10
to what you guys are doing especially
27:13
with the book you're asking questions in
27:15
here there's a lot of questions there's
27:17
a lot of work that's gonna go into this
27:19
and if you don't listen to what the
27:20
response and the answers are it it it's
27:23
almost like why are you doing it why are
27:25
you actually doing it so that is my
27:28
super boomer moment of the show I would
