below we're gonna we'll connect that
0:06
today or the second video here we're
0:09
going to talk about companion animals
0:11
and mental health it's more than just a
0:14
family member thing let me explain

0:30
hello everybody I'm Rob this is everyday
0:33
Heroes we are using this today for our
0:36
videos this is the series that covers
0:38
all things educational and informational
0:40
but we always have fun doing it because
0:42
you gotta have some fun now today we're
0:45
going to go over something that we've
0:46
talked about another series that we've
0:48
done running your mental health as well
0:50
as Ultra University live
0:52
um and of course we're going to do it
0:54
again but because it's a special episode
0:56
like this I needed that special person
0:58
to help me out and that special person
1:00
I call mom
1:03
um and good you got your dog back there
1:04
too so that's even better right now my
1:07
cat's in the other room so she's like I
1:08
don't I don't want to be
1:10
she she's out okay so I pulled from two
1:13
very different but very good articles to
1:15
use to help
1:17
um so obviously this is talking about
1:20
past the family bond we know that
1:22
animals are More Than Just Pets they are
1:24
the fur babies they are grandchildren
1:27
you know they are you know whatever
1:30
um but and we've talked about this
1:32
mental health idea on our other shows
1:35
having a source of help whether it be
1:39
pets or other is a
1:42
semi-easy way to go now what's featuring
1:45
about this first article from mental
1:47
health.org it's a United Kingdom company
1:49
they actually talk about what you can do
1:52
with or without if for some reason
1:54
you're unable to have one in your home
1:56
but the first thing they went off with
1:58
is how does that help how does a pet
2:00
help mental health well similar to you
2:03
know I know you take yours out for a
2:04
walk
2:05
it can help in that form so the first
2:08
thing they say is physical activity
2:10
right a big problem in America now is
2:13
stuff like obesity and diabetes in
2:15
people so why not give yourself a reason
2:17
to go take a walk take a run then do it
2:20
with your dog or your cat I always tell
2:23
the story when I was working in the mall
2:25
a lady walked her cat through the mall
2:27
on a leash and he just chilled there he
2:29
plopped down on this on the floor and I
2:31
love it I love it that's the cut I love
2:33
it amazing I thought it was great hey
2:36
Chris I know Chris who just put a
2:38
comment in from Belgium hey Chris good
2:40
to see you she's a volunteer for a cat
2:42
shelter here Chris is also another live
2:45
streamer like we are so
2:47
hey well there you go thanks for uh
2:49
joining the crew here that's awesome
2:52
um so yeah so number one physical
2:54
activity uh you can do it outside we
2:56
talked about the other day doing yoga
2:58
with your dog people do you have they
2:59
call it Doga it's literally dog yoga
3:03
um but you know and we laugh but it's
3:05
true number two companionship now a lot
3:08
of times let's say you are living alone
3:09
or let's say your family members are
3:11
farther away having a animal with you or
3:15
another family member I always want to
3:16
make sure to call family members because
3:18
they
3:18
you know they are but having
3:21
companionship is very important now we
3:23
know especially for older community a
3:25
lot of times in um
3:28
retirement homes they'll have dogs and
3:30
cats come to visit the the people right
3:33
and why do they do that well it's just
3:35
it makes them happy feel good it's feel
3:38
good exactly and what do you want to do
3:41
when you're not feeling well you want to
3:42
get something happy so why not pet a dog
3:45
um I forgot what it was I think there's
3:46
one in LA and there's a golden retriever
3:49
that goes and he's very famous there and
3:51
everybody loves seeing this dog and
3:53
every time they know it's whatever day
3:54
it is they just get so pumped because
3:57
the dog is coming and that's just that's
3:58
the best part of their week it's fun and
4:01
there's a commercial that's running
4:02
right now um it's I think at a
4:04
children's hospital and there's this
4:05
little kid that's in the bed and he's
4:06
obviously having so many treatments and
4:09
he looks up and he says
4:11
oh I don't I don't want to I don't want
4:13
to and the the doctor says well you know
4:16
we we're going to try something new
4:17
today and in comes this oh my gosh then
4:21
I just went oh I think it's a pedigree
4:24
it's a pedigree commercial so it's right
4:26
right right right right but I love that
4:28
commercial that is a great example uh
4:30
yeah exactly use you know number three
4:33
reducing anxiety so you have it I have
4:37
it many people do
4:39
um there's a great it's a video and I'm
4:42
not sure how they set this up but it's a
4:44
lady who is having a panic attack and
4:46
she videoed what her dog does to
4:48
basically calm her and he literally
4:50
jumps on her chest and he kind of like
4:53
puts his paw on her shoulder and she
4:56
slowly comes out of this panic attack
4:58
and now granted this dog was obviously
5:01
trained and we're going to talk about
5:02
that in a minute but the fact that you
5:05
can have an animal come to your lap put
5:07
your head you know head on there or or
5:09
for cat people for the cat shelter
5:11
having a cat come jump on your lap yeah
5:14
that's the idea of having it go and I
5:16
think and I think we've talked about it
5:18
uh it can lower your blood pressure by
5:20
just petting an animal for I think maybe
5:22
five or ten minutes it doesn't take very
5:24
long but you pet and your whole entire
5:27
body just kind of ah so I I agree I mean
5:32
I can sit there and my dog as you can
5:33
see is very small
5:35
um and and he'll sit next to me and I
5:37
will just stroke him almost
5:38
absent-mindedly I'm not even like
5:41
thinking about it really I'm just doing
5:44
it and it's just an immediate sense of
5:47
ah exactly exactly now the next one down
5:50
here is boosting self-confidence now
5:52
this is great for people who have autism
5:54
possibly or sensory disorders there you
5:57
go she said her cat sleeps on her who's
5:59
cat well ours doesn't only because of
6:02
our dogs but if she would I'm sure
6:06
um so those with sensory disorders like
6:08
you know like myself autism spectrum uh
6:11
animals can help you build your
6:13
self-confidence uh they say that if you
6:15
bring your dog out with you to the park
6:17
to your to your you know to school for
6:19
those schools that allow it
6:21
um it can allow the person to actually
6:23
learn how to uh socialize with fellow
6:27
students fellow peers of sort right
6:31
um we also and again with that meeting
6:33
new people and then of course adding
6:34
structure ADHD for somebody like me
6:38
having an animal that you have to feed
6:40
you have to get medicine at a certain
6:42
time especially ours because ours is on
6:44
a regimen of pills it's actually you
6:46
know think about it but it actually
6:48
keeps me structured along with my wife
6:51
to make sure that our dogs get what they
6:54
need
6:55
throughout the day we talked about this
6:58
I think yesterday was it yesterday gosh
7:00
the days just keep going we talked about
7:01
it how
7:02
um I take my dog out because if I didn't
7:05
he would let me know that he would you
7:07
know yes right and he comes right over
7:09
to me and he just sits there in his
7:10
Tails wagging and it's like are you
7:12
gonna take me you're gonna take me and
7:13
they take me it's like okay I'll take
7:15
you and it makes I I go out and I
7:18
immediately feel better
7:20
there you go now they do want to you
7:23
know caveat here and this is actually a
7:25
great thing to discuss as well
7:27
can you have a pet and obviously if
7:30
you're looking to use an animal for
7:32
companionship the first thing you want
7:34
to make sure now obviously this is for
7:36
your well-being but you have to make
7:37
sure that you can actually take care of
7:39
so a few things that they recommend
7:41
looking at how much outdoor space now
7:43
this is more so for a dog not
7:45
necessarily for a cat or a bunny
7:46
whatever but you have outdoor space many
7:49
times we're busy doing work you want to
7:51
have them be able to run around get
7:53
their crazies out you want to have some
7:55
sort of backyard how active are you now
7:59
we just said you know take him for a
8:01
walk to the dog park some dogs like to
8:04
go swimming how active are you going to
8:06
be to make sure that your dog cat or
8:08
whatever is gonna have enough time to
8:10
feel tired by the end of the day because
8:12
they say a tire dog he's a happy dog and
8:16
an entire dog makes happy Parents
8:18
exactly because you can then rest on the
8:21
couch and go thank God there's nothing
8:22
else to do
8:24
um how much time do you have to spend
8:25
now this is actually a very important
8:27
one too we get the luxury of working at
8:30
home so ours can roll around they can
8:32
come up here we can Bond do all that but
8:34
if you're going back out to your job if
8:37
you're on the road is a pet right for
8:39
you as far as time that he looked up as
8:41
I said that Christopher was like wait a
8:43
minute time comes spending what no so
8:46
trust me take it from the dog if you
8:48
don't have the time
8:49
he heard walk and that was it it was
8:52
like oh
8:53
now to go back to our morning video we
8:55
talked about how much money do you have
8:57
for the the care now we did go over some
9:00
expenses of how to cut costs to make it
9:02
easier but generally speaking you're
9:04
going to have vet bills food bills and
9:06
then of course the luxury items toys
9:08
beds what have you of course places like
9:12
where Chris works with the shelters they
9:14
all they sometimes do have uh donations
9:16
that you can get from them but usually
9:19
you got to make sure that you're going
9:20
to have a nice chunk I think it's about
9:22
60 70 of your total is going to go
9:26
towards your pet regularly now for us
9:29
you know we have a chronic dog it's more
9:32
than that because of his his things but
9:34
generally speaking right you know and
9:37
ask your shelter your shelter will know
9:38
how much money this particular pet is
9:41
going to uh take right now it's actually
9:43
great that Chris came on here because
9:44
they say what if you can't have your own
9:47
what if you're not going to well they
9:49
suggest one thing is going to a local
9:52
shelter Maybe sharing maybe spending
9:55
some time you know helping play with the
9:57
dogs walking the dogs you know
10:01
there you go I have the cat easier yeah
10:02
yeah it is what do you you know
10:05
sometimes you want to know who runs the
10:07
house though with cats cats are like I
10:10
own this house you I'm just letting you
10:12
stay here for a while
10:14
exactly but it's actually cool and I'm
10:16
not sure if Chris has ever seen this or
10:18
not at hers but you know volunteering at
10:20
a shelter that gives you that one-on-one
10:22
time to make you feel good you can also
10:24
go to like a vet clinic sometimes
10:26
they'll ask for some help in the back
10:29
um
10:30
there you know if your friends have pets
10:32
if your family has pets maybe you go
10:33
visit them you kind of get a two-for-one
10:35
right if you get to visit your family
10:36
right you also get to spend time with
10:39
the furry family members too so you know
10:41
if for some reason you're in an
10:43
apartment and this is usually for
10:44
apartment living for City living a lot
10:46
of places they're not very you know and
10:47
maybe a cat's fine maybe a fish is fine
10:49
but they're not very big on having large
10:52
animals because of the rules
10:54
now part two of this comes from Nami we
10:57
talk about Nami all the time because we
10:59
love them on our other show they go more
11:02
deep into the actual bond between a a
11:06
person and their furry child so to speak
11:09
they actually say the 67 of households
11:12
have a pet as of now that's about 85
11:16
million households uh in the United
11:19
States I'm curious
11:21
did that go up during the last couple of
11:23
years with the pandemic did more people
11:25
I believe so because I believe a few
11:27
years ago it was more like 50 40 so it's
11:31
definitely gone up
11:33
a good 20 almost since then
11:37
um in one study 60 of people have a
11:39
chronic mental health condition
11:40
considered pets to be as important as
11:43
their family the healing powers are
11:45
Indescribable so those it's one thing to
11:48
have a a fur baby as we call them
11:51
without a difficulty but those who have
11:53
a difficulty will automatically tell you
11:55
having a dog having a cat having a bunny
11:58
makes my life that much better necessity
12:02
it's a necessity it's a necessity so
12:04
what are the benefits so they break it
12:06
down it's shown to reduce stress as we
12:08
talked about depression and anxiety but
12:10
generally improves an overall quality of
12:13
your life pets provide a calm presence
12:15
and can divert negative thoughts and
12:17
then also promote exercise as we talked
12:19
about already uh caring for your pets
12:22
helps them commit to a routine you hear
12:25
it here all the time routine is like our
12:26
buzzword it should just be everywhere we
12:28
should say routine right that's your
12:30
body routine such as daily walking
12:33
creating a sense of purpose and a sense
12:36
of accomplishment
12:38
it can also facilitate social and
12:40
Community interactions and integration
12:42
right so again not a lot of you know
12:45
shocker news but for those who might not
12:47
realize how big it does we're here to
12:51
share the literature exactly that proves
12:54
now this part I love the types of
12:57
support now this is where you get into
12:58
the nitty-gritty so emotional support I
13:01
can actually talk about this ad nausea
13:03
mean because one of my dogs is now I
13:05
talked about this morning how we've
13:06
gotten a little bit lazy recently he's
13:08
kind of lost his you know train of
13:10
thought because we haven't been out much
13:12
but prior to the pandemic he kind of
13:16
taught himself my signs and my triggers
13:19
he will and even now he'll look at me
13:21
when I'm kind of in a mode and he'll
13:23
stare and he'll kind of watch and I look
13:26
back and go
13:28
I must be doing something
13:31
what's going on he has his vest now the
13:35
difference between emotional support and
13:36
others is you don't initially have to
13:38
have the paperwork for this what you do
13:40
want to have and I get it through my
13:41
therapist is a note saying this
13:44
ex-creature allows my my you know
13:47
patient to live life easier and better
13:50
with the following aspects and then you
13:53
just write it down but it's not just
13:55
dogs cats rabbits Birds hamsters and
13:59
horses are just some of the few that you
14:02
can use now a while back I talked about
14:04
horses being on it it actually got me
14:06
emotional because I used to ride and I I
14:09
know the feeling of a horse uh being it
14:11
but you can you literally you can tell
14:15
the animal will fit you well to be
14:17
emotionally supportive
14:20
um you must and again you must have the
14:22
prescription letter which is renewed
14:24
yearly from your therapist but really
14:26
that's as much as you need you don't
14:28
need to have to pay for work you don't
14:29
need to have the doable and under the
14:32
Fair Housing Act
14:34
98 of people can't say otherwise
14:38
they they must allow you to with that
14:40
paperwork allow you to bring in that
14:43
animal with you
14:45
and that that again is also more recent
14:47
than it used to be it used to be
14:49
different back so you know
14:51
I know that page so you're saying
14:53
because I'm this is all news to me so
14:55
you're saying having that that piece of
14:57
paper that referrals so to speak from
14:59
your your therapist allows you to take
15:01
your
15:02
um emotional support animal into a store
15:05
into a so so for instance for us when we
15:09
moved uh one of the things was that it
15:11
didn't count as one of the pets when we
15:13
moved because he was an emotional
15:14
support animal so the you know if the
15:16
home only allows two pets but you have
15:18
three and that third one is an emotional
15:20
support they really can't say anything
15:23
else because that's not considered a pet
15:25
that is considered a necessity as you
15:27
call it of life for you as far as
15:30
restaurants and stores there are the
15:33
limitations now for instance we had a um
15:37
God was lazy dog which is actually made
15:39
for dog people and you can bring your
15:42
dog to the outside portion not the
15:45
inside uh certain parts of malls
15:48
depending on where you go will allow you
15:50
to bring but only into certain areas of
15:52
what you're doing so emotional support
15:54
as nice as it is doesn't give you the
15:57
ability to do a lot it gives you the
16:00
ability to go to outdoor venues so any
16:04
parks any farmers markets for that
16:06
matter right and you're specifically
16:08
those saying those people who need that
16:11
emotional support dog because they're
16:12
uncomfortable in crowds or because
16:14
they're uncomfortable so I just want to
16:16
clarify that it's not just that you know
16:17
you have your emotion support dog and
16:19
everyone has one it's not it's for
16:21
people right now the confusing part is
16:24
that people who do take their pets out
16:25
and many places don't care but there are
16:29
certain areas that if you have the vest
16:30
on which which Skeeter does actually
16:32
have his vest you can go to certain
16:35
spaces not all spaces because he is a
16:39
little bit more than just you walking so
16:41
I'm curious Chris is in Belgium so um
16:44
Chris if you're still on right now I'm
16:45
curious do you have the same kind of
16:47
thing emotional support animals in
16:49
Belgium I'm curious I I don't know if
16:51
this is just truly an American thing or
16:53
is it really worldwide where we really
16:55
do understand that our pets can support
16:58
and help us just curious I don't know if
17:00
you're still on but if you are well it's
17:01
actually great that you said that
17:02
because the next one is the air carrier
17:04
access act that says Airlines must allow
17:07
emotional supports to accompany their
17:08
handlers in the cabin of the aircraft at
17:10
no additional cost interesting so I'm
17:13
actually curious to know what that is
17:14
because if you are flying with your pet
17:16
is the country you're going to or the
17:19
state you're going to also as open as
17:22
where you're coming from so that
17:23
actually is a very good question but if
17:25
you do have to fly and actually there's
17:27
jokes about it because somebody brought
17:29
their turkey on the plain ones somebody
17:31
brought a miniature pony on the plane
17:34
once and it was a bigger plane a snake
17:36
somebody brought a snake I think
17:38
somebody had a monkey on their shoulder
17:40
I mean you you it runs the gamut but you
17:43
know the fact that they a lot that they
17:45
can't say anything and will allow you to
17:48
at least come on that's a lot different
17:50
than it used to be before right and then
17:52
of course we ended with what I started
17:54
with the landlord and stuff like that
17:56
you know you have you obviously still
17:57
have to talk with the people but you
18:00
can't uh you know they usually can't say
18:01
so what do we have
18:03
um we have that also in schools and
18:05
police officers so schools I know are a
18:07
big thing here as well
18:09
um I think I might have talked about
18:10
that with you before but I know a lot of
18:11
schools will allow people with physical
18:14
or mental disabilities to bring their
18:16
dog uh seizure dogs are a big thing if
18:18
the student has a seizure disorder their
18:21
dog must be with them to make sure that
18:24
if the if the student is having an
18:25
attack the dog will
18:27
you know what we'll be there great
18:29
things to do right exactly now the next
18:32
part here is service dogs and this comes
18:34
under the Ada which we've also talked
18:36
about the American Disabilities Act this
18:38
one I'm going to shorten it to say a dog
18:40
that has been trained to perform tasks
18:43
that assist the individual with
18:44
disabilities and then it goes on to say
18:46
to detect the onset of a psychiatric
18:48
episode and lessen the effects that's
18:51
the short version of the verse in there
18:54
this is where you have to get the
18:57
paperwork guys so you and again I
18:59
thought I could do this with mine but no
19:01
you actually have to go out there you
19:02
have to get a diagnosis by a doctor
19:04
therapist psychiatrist whatever
19:07
um and you have to have the requirements
19:09
written down now to go back to your
19:12
question before can you go in with that
19:14
these are the animals that can go
19:16
anywhere with you if you want to go into
19:18
an Old Navy store if you want to go into
19:20
a restaurant
19:23
you can bring them in there and they
19:26
have a hundred percent no ability
19:28
to say anything
19:30
legally and they're they're they're
19:32
service animals versus emotional support
19:36
and I think there's a difference in the
19:37
name yeah and to calm students during
19:38
the exams oh my gosh I love that
19:41
so a good example of this one is canines
19:44
for warriors one of the biggest veteran
19:46
uh dog placements who places German
19:48
Shepherds labs and all that with Wounded
19:51
Warriors who come back from war that is
19:54
the example of a service animal that is
19:57
one that literally is trained and this
19:59
is the YouTube video I was talking about
20:00
that literally is trained to know when
20:03
something is happening this dog has gone
20:05
through multiple classes to become a
20:08
physical service dog now the last one on
20:10
their list is therapy animals now this
20:13
is where you get kind of fuzzy now the
20:15
best example here is called the good bar
20:17
and we have it up in Santa Clarita and
20:20
these are animals that were saved from
20:22
slaughterhouses saved from abusive homes
20:25
and they have turned into therapy
20:28
animals these include cows pigs
20:32
horses cows yes so so these animals that
20:36
were saved they're all mostly farm
20:38
animals right and they are they are now
20:41
they basically you get to live out their
20:42
lives on this this Farm in San accordia
20:44
and there's a bunch of them around the
20:45
country and these are therapy animals so
20:48
they will have people come in groups
20:50
with autism groups with depression
20:52
groups with PTSD and they basically let
20:55
you come and you just have you have time
20:58
with the animals whether it's brushing
21:00
whether it's writing whether it's
21:03
feeding and you get to go and you do
21:05
that so what's the difference then
21:06
between that and emotional support well
21:08
a therapy animal really generally isn't
21:11
used for any specific purpose other than
21:15
being with you so you can have you can
21:18
call your animal a therapy animal
21:21
and kind of get away with it because
21:23
there's no you're you're not you're not
21:25
using the dog for any specific purpose
21:28
other than making you feel good an
21:30
emotional support dog however does have
21:33
some paperwork and then obviously the
21:35
top tier goes back to the right right
21:37
the uh the the working dogs and the
21:40
working animals
21:41
so this is a lot of stuff we have the
21:43
links up there if you guys want to know
21:45
if anybody watching might need or might
21:48
be interested
21:49
check with your doctor or your therapist
21:51
they might have some resources to tell
21:53
you now regular doctors might not be the
21:56
go-to first because they may not be
21:58
trained in doing so but if you know a
22:00
therapist if you have a therapist
22:02
psychiatrist talk with them and see
22:04
that's how I did it I just brought in my
22:06
therapist one day I said hey
22:08
um we also oh children's Farms yes
22:10
that's that's cool
22:13
so one day I brought up my therapist I
22:14
just said hey out of the blue I have a
22:17
dog that you know fairly good with me
22:19
kind of sits by me doesn't say can I
22:22
make him some sort of therapy dog now
22:24
she kind of went down the line she said
22:25
if you want to make him a legitimate one
22:27
you have to go through all the things
22:28
all the sources but if you want to make
22:31
an emotional support dog I can give you
22:33
a letter I can write down what your your
22:36
difficulties are right and we can just
22:38
go from there and if anybody has a
22:40
problem they can call her you know her
22:42
directly and she'll talk to them she'll
22:44
say hey my patient has this this and
22:46
this and this is why he's using his dog
22:48
as a thing so you have different forms
22:51
of doing it guys if you guys want to
22:53
just if you if you can't have them but
22:54
you want to go visit go check out a farm
22:57
near you nearby go check out a reserve
22:59
there are a lot of places where you can
23:01
see wild animals you know there's I
23:03
think there's a wolf reserved by us that
23:04
basically takes in wolves that were used
23:07
to be pets
23:08
um wait wait wolves that used to be pets
23:11
well apparently apparently people were
23:13
legally keeping them and then they
23:15
realized they were too big and said oops
23:16
but they can't be let out because
23:18
they're too domestic right so they were
23:20
brought to the you know got it if you so
23:23
that's step one if you guys can't have
23:25
one go find a farm a children's Farm if
23:27
you have a kid a regular one for you
23:29
number two if you have a pet at home and
23:32
you're thinking hey maybe I want to take
23:34
my dog or my cat with me more often
23:36
check out emotional support and number
23:40
three if you really want to get hardcore
23:42
with it and make your dog a physical
23:44
working dog go for it I mean I'm still
23:47
kind of tempted because I feel like
23:49
Skeeter might have the ability he's you
23:52
know he's a little woohoo but he's smart
23:55
I think he can do it but I think the
23:57
fact that you have the option to do so
23:59
is very important I think it's a very
24:00
important topic we'll probably talk
24:02
about this again on my new mental health
24:03
I'm sure we'll bring it up again
24:06
um but what do you guys think I'm glad
24:09
that we got somebody who works with
24:10
animals on here you know she knows
24:12
firsthand the ability of having one and
24:14
working with them is obviously you have
24:16
Christopher we have our Menagerie here
24:20
um but what do you guys think I mean was
24:22
this a helpful conversation for you guys
24:24
would you guys like us to go more in
24:26
depth on this stuff let us know in the
24:28
comments thank you Chris for joining us
24:30
uh hopefully we'll get you joining us
24:32

24:43

24:46

24:48
like the support so thank you so much if
24:49
