0:29
today i welcome andrew king to the show
0:33
cruising alaska a visual journey to
0:37
andrew is a 25 year old author from a
0:40
town north of toronto
0:41
aurora ontario as a struggling high
0:44
school student during his younger years
0:46
he dealt with stress and anxiety but was
0:48
fortunate enough to have a teacher step
0:50
up who helped turn his life around he
0:53
says she helped him become a
0:55
better person overall and credits her
0:57
for helping him graduate high school
0:59
he has two degrees in travel and tourism
1:02
as well as hospitality
1:04
after college he traveled on cruise
1:07
favorite way to travel and explored the
1:10
his photography background to create
1:12
great travel photos that are included
1:15
in the book so without further ado we
1:19
andrew hey welcome to the show andrew
1:23
good i'm i'm thrilled that you're here
1:27
um we're going to be talking about your
1:28
book and we're going to be talking about
1:30
and what looking at some of the
1:32
photographs that you have in the book
1:33
and then we're going to send people to
1:35
go buy your book because it is amazing
1:38
in november so it's just around the
1:40
corner the book is coming out really
1:44
um and so we're kind of like the first
1:46
to to preview this and to launch it i'm
1:49
very excited about this so andrew let's
1:52
first talk a little bit
1:54
um about your education you're quite
1:56
accomplished you have degrees as we said
1:58
in travel tourism and hospitality tell
2:00
us about that a little bit
2:05
tourism is from toronto i did that
2:09
and then did the hospitality degree out
2:12
in vancouver british columbia
2:15
so what made you look into that what
2:17
made you say i want to get my
2:19
education my degrees in travel and
2:22
because you love cruising it's because
2:26
loving just travel overall and seeing
2:29
different places all over the world
2:33
well you did a beautiful job in the book
2:36
let's just let's just jump in um you
2:38
told me that you love to cruise so do i
2:40
i love to cruise why do you love to
2:42
cruise what is it about the ship what is
2:44
it about the activity of going on a
2:46
cruise that you love so much
2:48
uh for me it's all about being able to
2:50
go see new places in the world
2:53
get away from the stress of the everyday
2:57
and just being able to create new
2:59
memories with cruising
3:02
well and you did that you totally did
3:04
that so let's talk about your book i
3:06
want to pop your book up into the stream
3:07
for a second so everybody can see it
3:09
it's called uh cruising alaska a visual
3:14
so what's your book about my book is all
3:19
seeing alaska by cruise ship but kind of
3:23
eyes instead of like through other tour
3:27
or other people who do
3:30
work in alaska and you're a photographer
3:34
and so you decided to go out and take
3:37
of of different places i'm going to put
3:40
some of your photos up on the screen
3:42
and i'm going to ask you what your
3:43
inspiration was with these photographs
3:47
um the first one where is this taken uh
3:50
in a fjord up in alaska that
3:54
is just a beautiful scenic
3:57
overall great area to see and travel
4:01
quiet it's peaceful it's
4:04
it's just a whole new experience and i
4:07
can tell and what i'm fascinated by is
4:11
not just the beautiful mountains and the
4:13
water but the shadings in the water i
4:15
mean you just did a beautiful
4:17
job on this picture um what about this
4:19
one this is in the book as well where is
4:22
uh ketchikan alaska it's a beautiful
4:27
out in the out in the alaskan kind of
4:30
alaska area and as you can see it's just
4:34
a beautiful scenic area
4:36
that you really don't want to miss
4:40
so andrew what time what time of year
4:42
did you take these pictures because it's
4:44
the ocean is so blue and the mountains
4:47
what time of year did you take these
4:49
this would have to be between the months
4:52
may and late september absolutely
4:57
absolutely stunning and i see uh some
5:01
hiding in the trees up there yeah
5:04
it's the two american bald eagles just
5:09
excursions during one of them and the
5:11
two of them are just sitting up in that
5:14
just really perched up there and just an
5:18
sight to see absolutely and were you
5:21
surprised that you were able to get
5:22
these into your photograph
5:24
uh it was a little bit surprising but
5:27
with kind of people pointing them out it
5:31
have a good shot like that
5:35
so here's another gorgeous gorgeous
5:37
photo you can see snow's still on the
5:40
uh this is actually in the
5:43
outside of uh juno alaska area
5:46
and it's this was a seaplane that took
5:50
and and it's a great experience to see
5:54
glaciers and seeing these
5:58
the beautiful colors and everything from
6:01
it makes me want to go right now it
6:04
makes me want to go right now though
6:06
awesome awesome picture i'm assuming
6:08
that that is part of an iceberg
6:10
uh it's actually part of a whole glacier
6:14
that between the green and the mountain
6:18
that's a whole glacier right in the
6:21
and you and it's and then the blue color
6:24
that's within it looks like somebody
6:26
took a big bite out of it
6:27
it's gorgeous beautiful beautiful
6:29
picture and here's the last one i want
6:32
um where is this taken uh this is
6:34
actually taken within uh
6:36
the yukon territory of canada because
6:38
it's one of the poor areas i talk about
6:41
it's actually like only about a couple
6:45
into and you can get into canada through
6:49
there's these beautiful hills on the way
6:53
a little town well it's
6:56
they're absolutely beautiful and uh you
7:00
what came first the photos or the book
7:03
um the photos and then just kind of
7:07
went from there with it why did you
7:10
decide i mean i know you like to cruise
7:12
but why did you decide to write a book
7:14
about cruising alaska is that your
7:16
favorite place to cruise
7:17
or or it was just more
7:21
somewhere to start with more than
7:24
so andrew are you are you saying it here
7:26
first and people are going to hear this
7:28
this is only the first book you have
7:30
others that are coming out yeah there's
7:32
other ones i'm going to be
7:34
writing over time wonderful and are they
7:37
going to be these kind of books travel
7:40
and using your photographs yes well
7:43
they're beautiful you did an awesome job
7:45
um so you told me when i asked you when
7:50
you know when you wrote the book you
7:54
um to give people something to look
7:57
right yeah after all that we're
8:00
we're living in right now so let's talk
8:03
a little bit about that
8:04
why why is that so important to you um
8:08
well i think it's the big thing is we're
8:09
just a lot of us are getting tired of
8:12
seeing the same thing day in day out and
8:16
when this is over we're all going to
8:17
need something to get away from
8:23
agreed agreed so what do you hope your
8:27
readers are going to take away after
8:28
reading your book i mean i know that
8:30
people are going to rush out now and
8:31
want to get this book
8:32
for the photographs alone i keep saying
8:34
that because i'm so impressed by your
8:37
um what do you hope people after reading
8:39
this book are you hoping that they're
8:41
i need to go on a cruise or i need to go
8:43
get a camera and start taking pictures
8:45
just like andrew what is your hope
8:47
that will happen um i think the big
8:50
thing is is for people to
8:51
want to go travel after all this
8:54
and the other big thing of course is
8:59
this these areas that i went to in
9:01
alaska are only actually accessible by
9:04
except for the one area but the
9:07
access by cruise ship
9:11
so now that you've written your first
9:15
have you learned some skills and some
9:18
things that you didn't know that will
9:21
book a little bit easier or it doesn't
9:24
i to me it doesn't matter but to me like
9:29
this really brought me forward with
9:33
bringing a talent that i didn't even
9:40
and partnering it with your photography
9:42
how long have you been doing photography
9:44
oh i've been doing photography since i
9:52
wow wow and and did you did did you
9:55
realize you had this talent
9:57
with the camera or it was just something
9:59
you didn't know i started doing the
10:03
interesting interesting um let's talk
10:06
about your your writing process you said
10:08
that the pictures kind of came first and
10:10
a story around it you wrote the travel
10:14
do you just sit down with a notepad and
10:18
you take your pencil out your pen out
10:19
and you just start to write
10:21
or you do an hour no actually tell me
10:24
more uh kind of taking the photos from
10:29
and just kind of start writing and see
10:32
what kind of fits and then kind of
10:35
rearrange it as needed to
10:37
make it sound better interesting
10:40
and so when you're when you're using the
10:42
pictures and then writing around it
10:45
this is not fiction this is non-fiction
10:47
this is actually a real place that
10:49
you've been to you're not actually
10:50
writing a story you're actually writing
10:53
um the information around this going on
10:56
and and the photographs and all of that
11:00
it just flows you're not you don't sit
11:01
down and first do an outline and then
11:03
you come back later on and do a couple
11:04
of words here and a couple words there
11:08
yeah exactly it just flows as i go with
11:12
so you went to school you have your
11:17
in in tourism and in travel and in
11:19
hospitality do you plan on using any of
11:23
as we move farther along are you are you
11:25
going to maybe be a travel
11:27
um advisor are you gonna be a travel
11:30
gonna use any of those skills um i would
11:34
either be a person who sells cruises
11:37
or actually work for a cruise line
11:41
and which okay so i have to ask what's
11:43
your favorite cruise line
11:45
um i would have to say one of my top
11:47
ones is uh royal caribbean
11:49
me too me too i i either it's either
11:52
princess cruise or royal caribbean i
11:54
one of them owns the other i think but
11:57
they're their own separate companies
11:59
oh they're apps okay so i like them both
12:01
i equal opportunity for both
12:03
i love to cruise i have been all over
12:05
the world cruising and it sounds like so
12:07
where else have you gone i've gone
12:11
with uh several other lines as well and
12:14
i've gone to across the atlantic
12:17
over to europe i've tried i've cruised
12:21
europe like from rome going to like
12:25
greece i've done cruises of course in
12:29
cruises uh first cruise ever was to
12:33
and a cruise in australia and new
12:38
wow i'm exhausted i'm totally exhausted
12:42
and i i know i said why do you like to
12:44
cruise but for me i like to cruise
12:46
because i unpack once
12:48
and then i get to go off the ship and
12:50
then come back i never have to go in and
12:52
out of hotels what is it that you like
12:54
so much about cruising
12:56
uh i think the big thing is just
12:59
experiencing new areas and seeing new
13:03
experiencing new lifestyles and seeing
13:05
the way people live in all these
13:09
and different food yeah yeah
13:12
definitely different food um so
13:15
did you have any challenges when you
13:17
were writing this book
13:19
i guess he was just sometimes just
13:21
trying to keep focused at times because
13:23
you got other things going on in life so
13:25
it's like you gotta sometimes try to
13:27
find a way just to completely
13:29
focus and just stick with it
13:33
yeah and i think that's an important
13:34
message for those of you who are
13:36
watching either live or on replay this
13:39
is it's a matter of sticking to
13:40
something is making a decision
13:42
right and then just doing it and that's
13:49
on on november 13th is when your book
13:52
comes in it'll be in the bookstore we're
13:54
going to put the link again into the
13:56
comments so that you can go pick up your
13:58
how are you going to celebrate your book
14:02
i think this course being around family
14:06
experiencing it with others and i have
14:08
to assume your family is really proud of
14:12
to be a published author to be able to
14:15
is andrew king and i'm a published
14:17
author that's pretty impressive
14:19
and i again i want to thank has mark
14:21
publishing um for introducing you
14:24
to me and for being our sponsor and and
14:28
again i want to put the book back into
14:31
uh window and it's very easy to get a
14:35
copy you just click that link that's in
14:37
comment area and you will be taken over
14:40
to a page that you can purchase the book
14:42
i am sure that um andrew would be
14:46
to hear that you picked up a copy of his
14:49
book and you're wondering how do i let
14:52
well andrew has an instagram account at
14:54
cruise picks by kinger which i
14:56
absolutely love and i am sure that if
14:59
you send if you go over to instagram and
15:01
you send a message over to andrew and
15:03
let him know that you have a picture of
15:04
you have the book take a picture of you
15:06
holding the book and send it in
15:07
i am sure andrew will be thrilled am i
15:12
yeah yeah i i think i would love to if i
15:14
was a published author
15:16
i would love to know that uh somebody
15:19
and took a picture of it the other way
15:21
that you can get in touch with andrew is
15:24
thehasmarkpublishing.com website because
15:27
that is who publishes
15:28
andrew andrews fortunate there are lots
15:30
of different ways to do
15:31
to write a book but andrew has a
15:33
publisher which is awesome it happens to
15:36
publishing and they have helped him get
15:38
this book out from the beginning
15:40
is there any last minute comment from
15:43
last minute thought that you want to
15:45
make sure that our viewers
15:47
hear from you um the big thing is of
15:50
if i didn't have those couple teachers
15:53
i don't know what position i would be in
15:57
let's okay you know what let's back up
15:58
let's talk about that
16:00
um i it's a very important very
16:02
important statement i think that a lot
16:04
of kids i don't know what your
16:05
challenges were when you were growing up
16:07
in school but it's fortunate you had
16:09
teachers and you had adults that were
16:11
there to help you um
16:13
did you ask for help or they just they
16:16
they saw it and they wanted to help you
16:18
uh it was kind of a mix of
16:20
both because they noticed that like i
16:23
student who didn't really like school at
16:27
because i think a lot of it had to deal
16:29
with one of the schools i was in
16:32
it the teachers just didn't really
16:35
have a good respect for helping students
16:39
with like the learning type or
16:43
just being able to help them without
16:46
causing problems for them
16:48
so you're fortunate that you had
16:50
somebody and somebodies it wasn't just
16:52
one that was able to help you along
16:54
have you let them know that you have a
16:55
public that you have a book that's
16:57
yes i have i bet they're excited
17:01
and i i think it's a credit to you
17:05
good did you want to say something
17:09
no that was it so i think it's a credit
17:13
i am sure that um to be able
17:16
the teachers to be able to look back and
17:17
now to see you as a published author
17:19
and to see your photography um i'm sure
17:22
that they are pleased that they decided
17:24
that they wanted to help you and and
17:27
and i am thrilled because you wouldn't
17:29
be here with your book
17:31
had that not happened so thank you to
17:33
the teachers and thank you for all the
17:35
people along the way
17:36
that have helped you get your you know
17:38
help you get to the place that you're at
17:40
right now and to have this book
17:42
again if you are interested in picking
17:43
up a copy of the book it's sitting in
17:46
if you would like to follow andrew on
17:48
instagram you can follow him
17:50
at cruise picks by kinger you can also
17:53
go visit the website
17:55
hasmarkpublishing.com to find out more
17:58
and andrew i want to thank you for
17:59
sharing time with us today um
18:01
it's it's always fun to have authors on
18:04
and i see and you i know you're not in
18:06
but you must like the beach right yeah
18:10
gone there quite a few winters over the
18:14
to get out of the cold i bet i bet um i
18:17
want to thank you for spending time with
18:19
with us today and i want to thank our
18:20
audience for spending time with us
18:21
because you have a choice as to where
18:23
you spend your time and you chose to
18:25
spend it with andrew and me today
18:27
and we want to thank you we are very
18:28
very appreciative so go out and give
18:31
somebody an awesome day and we'll see
18:32
you next time on the next karen glasser
