hello everybody I'm Rob this is everyday
0:27
Heroes this series that covers the
0:29
educational but still fun topics of
0:32
conversation
0:33
now in honor of a day that is all for
0:36
well-being we figured we're going to
0:39
expand it to not only you but to your
0:41
pets now obviously this one here isn't
0:44
going to a dog park anytime soon but you
0:47
know
0:48
what are you gonna do all right but
0:50
we're not gonna do this alone I call her
0:52
mom
0:53
you can call her Karen just call me just
0:57
make sure you call me
1:00
so I put a few articles up for you guys
1:02
to check out
1:04
um we're going to talk about dog park
1:05
etiquette because unfortunately from
1:07
personal experiences and stories I've
1:10
heard dog parks are not always the place
1:12
that people know what to do because you
1:15
just assume it's a place
1:18
you let your dog run free
1:20
not so much so we're going to pull from
1:23
the AKC American Kennel Club article I
1:26
love these guys I watched the uh
1:28
Westminster dog show every year they do
1:30
all that good stuff too so I figured who
1:33
knows better than probably them
1:35
a couple key points that they wanted to
1:37
point out while we're going to go over
1:39
the rules dog parks in general do give
1:41
dogs and owners a place for their dogs
1:43
to run around do their thing sniff play
1:46
all that good stuff however young dogs
1:49
or unsocialized pets should not be taken
1:53
and we'll talk about that in a little
1:54
bit and of course cleanliness safety and
1:57
all that is still required even though
2:00
you're outside oh there's Christopher I
2:02
guess he has enough of our conversation
2:04
already
2:06
um so dog parks are a very good thing if
2:09
used correctly I know over by you and
2:11
your community you have a set one and
2:14
many places do that now whether you live
2:15
in a community whether you live in your
2:17
Park a lot of times cities will now have
2:19
a designated area for you and your dog
2:22
to play what I love is when you have the
2:25
large and the small when you have the
2:27
unsocialized socialized right because
2:29
honestly even though I don't recommend
2:31
bringing a dog that's not used to it if
2:33
there's an area in the park that is
2:35
gated it off or maybe just wander around
2:37
the park it's still good to get your dog
2:40
out and at least used to because I'm
2:42
going to assume many people want their
2:44
dogs to at some point be able to have
2:46
some fun and play with their fellow
2:48
peers
2:50
um the trust for public land reports
2:52
that dog parks are among the fastest
2:54
growing kind of parks in 100 U.S cities
2:58
in 2019 there were 810 dedicated dog
3:02
parks based on the number of parks for
3:05
every 100 000 residents the top five
3:07
cities are Boise Idaho Portland Oregon
3:11
Henderson Nevada
3:13
Norfolk Virginia and for our neck of the
3:16
woods San Francisco California
3:19
the only one out there that was odd to
3:21
me was Boise but apparently there's a
3:23
lot of people in Idaho so I guess that
3:25
makes sense you're going to have a lot
3:26
of dogs with those people right and it's
3:28
far planned a lot of farmers Ranchers
3:31
have dogs so what are you gonna do
3:33
is your dog ready for that experience so
3:36
the first thing and most important thing
3:38
is Young dogs unvaccinated dogs don't
3:42
bring them anywhere I can tell you
3:44
stories I shouldn't laugh but it's just
3:46
the way people word the questions were
3:48
kind of odd but in reality the
3:50
seriousness of
3:52
if your dog isn't vaccinated or if your
3:54
dog is just too young
3:56
don't bring him out on the flip side if
3:59
your dog is suffering from something or
4:02
recovering from something or let's say
4:04
your dog might be in heat also not a
4:07
good idea think about what you would do
4:09
especially in pandemic times right if
4:12
you aren't so hot right now are you
4:14
gonna go out and join the rest of the
4:16
world right probably not same thing goes
4:20
for your dog
4:21
um and actually there are um Kitty cafes
4:24
around the world as well so in reality
4:26
too if the kitty is there aren't feeling
4:29
so hot they're probably going to take
4:30
them off display that way they don't
4:32
hurt the other kitties that might be
4:34
having fun
4:36
um now this can easily be you know
4:38
remedied when you do adopt uh your pet
4:41
usually the first thing you'll do at the
4:43
shelter is they'll give you the first
4:44
set so usually it's rabies
4:47
um
4:48
uh lepto something and um
4:53
influenza is now one of the big ones
4:55
especially yeah
4:58
um I can't remember
5:00
to tell it thank you so most of the time
5:02
right off the bat whether it's your dog
5:04
or cat they will give you the shots it's
5:06
included so a lot of times it's a 25 fee
5:10
and that includes the shots uh the
5:12
microchip your tags all that good stuff
5:14
however just like we need our boosters
5:17
your dog isn't ready off the bat to go
5:20
in immediately so when you do get your
5:23
pet bring them to your vet immediately
5:25
or at least a couple days after they'll
5:27
let you know the timeline they'll let
5:30
you know when the next boosters are due
5:31
more likely than not if you do maybe
5:34
adopt a dog over the age of four months
5:36
or maybe an older dog not necessarily
5:38
have to be that big of a deal they
5:40
probably already have their boosters you
5:42
can pretty much go out and do what you
5:44
like however I always recommend that if
5:46
you can't bring them to the park
5:47
immediately go take them for a walk get
5:50
them the outside go around your backyard
5:52
go around your block at least they can
5:55
get a taste of some sunshine right right
5:58
what do you do after your dog is
6:01
vaccinated well you still have one more
6:04
hurdle to go over obedience and
6:07
socialization
6:09
I will not stress enough because it's
6:11
happened to dogs that I've had it's
6:12
happened to the dogs that I've seen if
6:15
you are in the situation where you have
6:17
big and little mixed together which is
6:19
fine I have no problem with it a lot of
6:22
times though the other people's dogs or
6:25
even your own might not be so nice or
6:28
they might just be so big that they are
6:30
playing but unfortunately they roll over
6:34
it's not going to read it so the two
6:37
things that I will strongly say is
6:40
obedience training now this is really
6:43
the basics come wait sit and you know
6:48
your version of know or stop whatever
6:50
word you want we're not saying you need
6:52
to have your dogs know how to run
6:54
through an obstacle course at the
6:55
Westminster that would be nice though
6:59
actually have that now you can actually
7:01
take them through a course
7:03
um but really socializing and I'm sorry
7:06
obedient obedience is the basic command
7:09
if you can get your dog to stop what
7:11
it's doing and return to you your gold
7:14
you are good if you know offhand that
7:18
your dog probably isn't going to care
7:20
what you tell him or her
7:22
probably not the best time to go now on
7:25
another show I did talking about how to
7:27
save money on on pet expenses I talked
7:30
about you doing this stuff at home now I
7:33
have gone to trainers I've actually
7:35
known trainers personally as well
7:37
there's no problem going to them and
7:39
honestly if you are concerned with your
7:41
ability go to a dog trainer obviously
7:44
they know what they're doing but many
7:47
times the commands of Sit Stay all that
7:49
you can do for free at home I know when
7:54
we had dogs growing up for the most part
7:56
we did it ourselves I think once or
7:59
twice we had a dog that we might have
8:00
taken to a trainer but that was just for
8:02
well I mean here's the reality when a
8:04
trainer works with a dog they're really
8:06
training the the owner more than
8:08
anything else right because if we're not
8:10
consistent it doesn't really matter so
8:12
yeah there is right so you know be good
8:17
and hopefully your dog will follow as
8:19
well
8:20
um all right so after obedience the last
8:22
thing to know of is socialization the
8:24
worst thing you want to do or be accused
8:26
of is having a regressive a reactive or
8:29
a guarding dog
8:31
reactive just means just like people if
8:34
you are a little on edge you might do
8:37
something by accident your dog does the
8:39
same aggressive obviously
8:40
self-explanatory
8:42
guarding is usually over resources which
8:45
is why one of the tips we're going to go
8:46
over is why you don't want to bring
8:47
things with you to the park because lots
8:49
of dogs get very possessive so what do
8:52
you do about that that is really going
8:54
to be on you but I would say if you know
8:57
or if you even have a smidge of feeling
9:00
that your dog probably isn't going to be
9:02
okay with a bunch of other dogs
9:05
hold off
9:07
I would say you know and actually it's
9:09
kind of cool that we're by each other
9:10
because we can actually use each other's
9:12
dogs as bait more or less right for
9:15
instance we have two she has one mine
9:18
haven't been out for a while so what I
9:20
would probably do is go over to your
9:21
place your your uh park with Christopher
9:24
and just practice out there do I think
9:27
my dogs are gonna do anything no of
9:28
course not but it's been a couple years
9:31
they haven't been seeing the sunshine
9:33
and who knows how long right it's good
9:36
to practice
9:37
and when we first moved here because we
9:40
didn't know how he would react he's a
9:42
little dog but he thinks he's a big dog
9:44
we do have a little dog park and a big
9:46
dog park but he does not want anything
9:48
to do with the little dog park he wants
9:50
to be where the big dogs are and he can
9:53
hold his own but it's scary because he's
9:56
tiny so I tend to walk into a dog park
9:58
just with a leash with the dog on the
10:01
leash and let him go around and smell
10:03
and and sniff and acclimate him to maybe
10:05
one of the bigger dogs and sometimes
10:07
that works sometimes it doesn't but well
10:10
that is actually I think one of the tips
10:12
we're going to go over so that is a
10:13
great uh oh because there's a difference
10:16
between that versus you know leaving
10:18
them at the door and letting them go in
10:20
right uh before we go into that though
10:23
the next part on here was is it a
10:24
particular dog park good for your dog
10:26
kind of a silly question to think about
10:29
but if you know at least in California
10:32
there's all sorts of styles season Milan
10:36
actually who lives out here he lives by
10:38
I think Simi Valley and he uses the big
10:41
ones now he would recommend the bigger
10:43
size for the reason of letting your dog
10:46
have space to run and jump
10:48
if however your dog likes to take off
10:50
and do his own thing
10:52
you know so while the question itself
10:54
seems odd take a look around if you want
10:57
to Google Map it because sometimes you
10:59
can get the satellite view check out
11:01
what Parks look like before you go if
11:03
you take a look at it and go this is a
11:05
good match go bring him over if it turns
11:07
out it might be too much there's
11:09
probably a hundred more within your
11:11
vicinity that you can go to sometimes
11:15
nowadays they do require vaccinations
11:17
and your tags so occasionally there will
11:20
be quote-unquote guards or people there
11:23
and if they notice your dog isn't
11:25
wearing a tag or whatever you can
11:27
actually get penalized and if you don't
11:29
have your proof you will actually be
11:31
asked to leave just because like you
11:33
mentioned because of the the illnesses
11:35
because of the aggressiveness things can
11:37
happen so it's good it's a little
11:39
annoying when you just kind of want to
11:41
let your dog play but I understand
11:43
nowadays right and they should have
11:45
their shots I mean it's just safer they
11:47
should have their shots and they should
11:49
yeah right right okay so let me move
11:52
over to actually the doggington post one
11:55
because apparently that's the one that
11:56
has the uh
11:57
uh rules about the leech and all that
11:59
stuff so doggington post I love that
12:01
name I think it's a spin-off of
12:03
Huffington Post I believe
12:05
um they worked on 12 rules to abide by
12:08
one going
12:09
so first off
12:12
when a dog is entering or leaving a park
12:15
call them away from the gate the last
12:19
type of training you want to teach them
12:21
is to run to the door now this is great
12:23
for home as well you don't want your dog
12:25
running in the door we actually have a
12:27
sign that says don't knock the dogs know
12:28
you're here because God in my head hurts
12:31
after I hear that noise but don't let
12:34
them run to the gate if you need to hold
12:37
on to their collar pick them up do
12:40
something but put them to the side to so
12:42
they don't learn to go number two and
12:45
this actually is where it comes in
12:46
remove your leash before the park
12:50
um there's usually double Gate Systems
12:51
you usually walk in there's a little
12:53
area and then you walk into the park
12:55
this one has a couple reasonings behind
12:58
it one is safety wise a lot of times if
13:01
the leash is long A lot of times dogs
13:03
have tripped gotten caught and hurt
13:04
themselves in the leash because the dog
13:07
ends up wrapping around items the dog
13:09
can hurt himself secondly the dog it can
13:12
actually cause a problem for other dogs
13:14
to pull on the leash and cause your dog
13:17
to either choke or get in a situation
13:19
where it is however if you're the only
13:22
one there or if it's maybe two dogs and
13:25
the dogs don't look like they're going
13:27
anywhere you can do what my mom said and
13:30
walk them in let them get used to the
13:32
area use your judgment as to what you
13:35
think because either or is a good
13:37
reasoning to do or not do depending
13:40
number three now I'm not a fan of metal
13:43
colors at all but some people use the
13:45
prongs to choke chains if you have that
13:48
make sure to add either have another
13:50
caller in the car because you don't want
13:52
to put that into the dog park not
13:55
because it's necessarily bad for your
13:57
dog but if another dog comes to go play
13:58
and they want to you know bite and do
14:01
the whatever that's gonna hurt if a dog
14:03
Chomps down on a piece of metal you're
14:05
going to have a dental bill you might be
14:06
paying the owner for that so I don't use
14:09
them at all I really don't like how it
14:11
works personally but if you have to do
14:13
that put a collar on like a soft collar
14:15
that way when the dogs run around
14:18
you are good to go number three or
14:21
number four keep an eye on the dog at
14:24
all times
14:26
I know this is hard you want to interact
14:28
with your friends when you're there make
14:30
sure you can see your dog at any point
14:33
of the yard now this goes into how big
14:35
the yard is the park if you don't think
14:38
you can keep an eye on your dog in a
14:40
large area find a dog park that's
14:42
smaller because you want to be able to
14:44
see all four corners a lot of times when
14:47
I did go to the dog park I went with
14:48
people I knew yes you want to converse
14:50
but I always had my eyeball on mine just
14:54
to make sure he wasn't doing anything it
14:57
wasn't supposed to because last thing I
14:59
want to be accused of of my dog doing
15:01
something it's not supposed to number
15:03
five Pick Up After Your Dog cleanliness
15:06
is Godliness what right
15:09
um Eve just like when you're walking
15:10
down the street and a lot of places now
15:12
there's like things on the side of the
15:13
sidewalk now with like dog scoop things
15:16
but there's always going to be dog uh
15:18
waste disposal things there Pick Up
15:21
After Your Dog sometimes there's even
15:22
the full-on scooper so you don't have to
15:24
bend down and pick it up you can just
15:25
scoop it and dump it in the garbage
15:28
just like anywhere else cleanliness
15:31
niceness politeness if you don't want
15:34
them doing it to you why would you do it
15:36
to them number six keep an eye on body
15:39
language now this is where I tell people
15:41
to research up on your breed and your
15:46
dog now not all breeds act the same not
15:48
all dogs act the same some big dogs can
15:51
be so timid and submissive that they
15:52
look Fierce and they're not and she said
15:55
some small dogs can look so timid and
15:58
whatever and end up having a worse bite
16:00
than a bark right so if you know offhand
16:04
that your dog does things that aren't
16:06
appropriate
16:07
and they're about to do that right then
16:09
and there
16:10
get in the way now obviously don't put
16:12
your hand down there you know God for
16:14
experience but if your dog is about to
16:17
do something that you can tell get your
16:20
body into the middle try to push yours
16:23
out tell the person who's dog that
16:25
they're doing with same thing obviously
16:27
you're not going to go whack somebody
16:28
else's dog but let them know hey I'm
16:30
gonna separate mine from yours because
16:32
my dog's about to do something stupid
16:34
and I don't want your you know most of
16:36
the time people are cool they might even
16:38
go over and grab their dog just to help
16:40
you but just keep an eye out for that
16:42
kind of thing number seven like we said
16:45
before if your dog's not feeling well
16:46
leave them at home why you would go to
16:49
the dog park without your dog I have no
16:50
idea but I think they're saying if you
16:52
want to go to the dog park but your dog
16:54
says no don't go just stay home maybe go
16:57
in the backyard play do something there
16:59
don't bring un uh neutered unspayed or
17:02
dogs in heat again just like if your dog
17:05
has something those things will attract
17:07
the wrong kind of attention and while a
17:10
lot of people think that's funny it's
17:12
not and the last thing you want to end
17:13
up with yeah so just don't do that leave
17:18
anything that your dog loves at home
17:21
don't bring toys don't bring treats
17:23
don't bring food many places say that if
17:26
you're eating something like if you go
17:28
for breakfast and you're about to walk
17:29
in you have like an Egg McMuffin don't
17:31
you're not allowed in there like and
17:33
even if those there's no sign when I was
17:35
in Calabasas people would be like finish
17:37
out there don't like they would yell at
17:39
you okay interesting and not go in there
17:41
because the last thing you want is that
17:43
because you know dog they can smell
17:44
better the weekend if you have a yummy
17:46
thing in your hand they're like oh food
17:48
food and don't bring any toys for the uh
17:52
possessive thing you don't want to get
17:53
them too riled up
17:56
um let's see number 10 don't go in there
17:59
wearing your Sunday Best if you're about
18:01
to go to uh I don't know uh a Gala
18:05
afterwards or you have a wedding to go
18:06
to don't be wearing your fancy clothes
18:08
to the dog park
18:15
number 11. now this is one that I always
18:17
actually thought just should be General
18:19
but apparently people are okay with it
18:21
when you bring your kids be careful when
18:25
you bring your kids I always thought
18:27
that was a very not smart thing to do
18:29
personally because people let their kids
18:31
run around and then when the kid falls
18:33
over and starts crying they get mad at
18:35
the dog owner for the dog running around
18:38
at the dog park that he's supposed to be
18:39
running around at
18:41
I just think that's kind of a dumb idea
18:43
personally if you have to bring your
18:44
kids that's fine whatever but if they're
18:47
young like little keep them on your lap
18:49
keep them by you do whatever a dog park
18:52
is for dogs if you know sometimes
18:55
there's a playground next door if you
18:56
want them to go play next you know
18:57
whatever they can go play you know 10
18:59
feet away from the thing I just think
19:01
it's a weird mix but if you have to just
19:04
keep an eye and you know if the dog runs
19:06
into your kid it's not the dog's fault
19:09
or the owner's fault it's a dog park I'm
19:11
just that's like putting that out there
19:13
all right the last one here and this is
19:15
very important especially for places
19:17
like where we live keep an eye on your
19:19
pet level of energy heat and panting if
19:24
your dog looks like a tobacco pass out
19:27
go home uh get your water or go to the
19:30
car get your water do that stuff right
19:31
if you know if your dog can handle a
19:33
quick break and go back in great
19:35
I'm always under the impression if I'm
19:38
feeling too hot and I'm getting kind of
19:40
sun stroke I'm gonna go home with my dog
19:42
because he's probably suffering 10 times
19:45
more than I can so that's the general
19:48
etiquette we have for dog parks most of
19:50
it's Common Sense most of it may not be
19:53
but generally speaking I would say if
19:55
it's been a while practice somewhere
19:57
with your friends
19:59
um go out take a walk get them back into
20:01
the sun first then see how they act if
20:04
you are perfectly fine and you have one
20:06
of those police dogs that never does
20:08
anything wrong
20:09
go for it do whatever you want that's
20:11
cool but if you're like most of us and
20:13
you have dogs that kind of do stupid
20:15
things sometimes just keep an eye out
20:17
for them well I started walking so I
20:20
started walking every day with my dog to
20:22
get him acclimated again because
20:24
they're during the summer nobody goes to
20:26
the dog park here it's just too hot
20:28
right it's just too hot but in the
20:31
morning at six in the morning I'll take
20:32
my little one out and we'll go take a
20:34
walk and he gets acclimated and he has
20:36
friends now on the street you know who
20:39
sniff them and that's really good for
20:40
socialization so that's a great tip Rob
20:43
that you mentioned is that if you it's
20:45
been a while since you've been at the
20:47
dog park or you've never done a dog park
20:48
you can acclimate your dog on a leash
20:51
because there's such a thing as an
20:52
off-leash dog park and an unleash dog
20:54
park which it doesn't make sense an
20:57
unleash dog park that why is it a park
20:58
then because then you have to be with
21:00
your dog however if you're walking your
21:03
dog on a leash and you see there's dogs
21:05
I will carefully like walk over
21:07
carefully and you know like let's see if
21:09
they want to communicate and do their
21:10
little sniffing and licking
21:12
um and it's great to socialize so now
21:14
when we're ready to start going to the
21:15
dog park and you can come you'll bring
21:17
your two little pups um we'll go to the
21:20
park and I'm gonna feel a lot better
21:21
because he's used to now seeing other
21:23
dogs on the street great and snipping at
21:25
them
21:26
right right that is a good point yeah so
21:28
just
21:29
um as you would uh train your pet at
21:31
home just use that knowledge when you go
21:34
out to the dog parks as well
21:36
um and you'll feel better about it too
21:38
because you won't be so stressed and you
21:41
can actually enjoy yourself and watch
21:42
them run around and be crazy right as
21:44
they should right all right you guys
