0:09
hello everyone Karen Glasser here and
0:11
welcome to life unced aging like a fine
0:15
wine I am here with multimedia artist
0:18
Shelley carile how are you Shelley I'm
0:21
great Karen thanks for having me show I
0:24
am so excited to have you today I've had
0:27
a chance to look at your artwork and you
0:30
amazing so first of all I just want to
0:33
kind of ask the question what exactly is
0:35
a multimedia artist how would you define
0:38
that well I have several disciplines my
0:41
main one is photography I use my
0:44
Photography in collage I've done
0:46
experimental video I've done
0:48
installation I'm a musician and I use
0:51
some of that in my artwork um so yeah I
0:54
mean I I guess that's multimedia
0:56
although I'm only really focusing on
0:57
photography and collage um and music
1:00
right now and music yes wow okay well
1:04
that's that's really awesome so I kind
1:05
of want to know your story because
1:07
that's how this show always starts your
1:09
story how did you actually end up to
1:11
what you're doing right now oh my
1:14
goodness well I it probably all started
1:16
when I was 13 um I was a grew up as a
1:19
competitive swimmer and I was offered
1:20
the opportunity by my parents because I
1:22
was taking piano lessons to quit
1:24
swimming and do music fulltime and I did
1:27
not take that opportunity which I
1:28
regretted because at the time I was very
1:31
focused on pleasing other people and not
1:34
doing what my passion was yeah so music
1:37
turned into art and then I got an
1:39
undergraduate uh Bachelor of Fine Art in
1:42
the late 80s in art and then I went back
1:44
to music in the 90s um I was a Prof I
1:48
was singing professional jazz singing
1:50
jazz professionally rather um and loving
1:54
that and then I had a voice issue and I
1:55
lost my voice and so then after
2:00
years of you know being in relationships
2:01
and giving away my power and my life to
2:05
relationships um I as my marriage last
2:08
marriage was falling apart I decided to
2:10
go back and take art classes at the
2:12
community college uh and then and then I
2:15
had this aha that I was going to go back
2:17
and get my master's degree in art and so
2:20
as my marriage fell apart um I became a
2:24
full-time artist and I'm creating an art
2:27
business right now um so yeah that's
2:30
kind of my short wow wow and and and
2:33
again this show is all about people
2:34
doing extraordinary things and this is
2:37
extraordinary you decided to go back and
2:39
you're doing all of this amazing artwork
2:43
so where where do you want to go and and
2:47
if somebody want were to come to you and
2:49
say I don't know I I don't know what I'm
2:52
supposed to be doing right now what
2:53
would you be telling them would how
2:55
would you motivate them Inspire
2:57
them um well that's one my one of the
3:00
things I'm doing at least with youth
3:02
right now I'm teaching them 2D cutout
3:04
animation and as part as part of my art
3:07
practice I do want to be working with
3:08
people and inspiring them to follow
3:10
their souls path on the planet you know
3:13
because so many so many of us for so
3:15
many years are doing you know working in
3:17
jobs we don't like doing things because
3:20
we feel like we should do or because
3:21
what Society tells us so hopefully
3:24
through my art and teaching I can
3:26
inspire people and motivate people and
3:28
help people to follow their passion
3:30
whether that's you know art or not it
3:32
could can be you know many different
3:34
things so it's actually the art itself
3:37
that's motivating you at this time to to
3:40
show others that they can they can do
3:42
what you're doing right absolutely right
3:45
I'm starting um I call myself a I've
3:47
always called myself a light Bloomer I
3:49
did that in singing and I'm going to go
3:51
back to it now I'm doing it in art um
3:53
and so you know yeah that's that's my
3:56
goal and and to you know I hope that my
3:59
art inspires healing and and
4:02
self-reflection and reconnection with
4:04
your own internal power and with the
4:06
sacred feminine and reconnection to
4:09
well what is your process when you're
4:12
creating art do you come up with the
4:14
idea first or do you just have a blank
4:18
canvas as they like to say and it
4:20
appears how what's your process um well
4:24
I I start with taking my teardrop
4:26
camping trailer and going out into
4:28
nature National Park St Parks or
4:30
anywhere I can find and I take pictures
4:33
and I immerse myself in the photography
4:36
process of you know standing there for
4:38
hours taking sun sunrise and sunsets oh
4:41
I know it's it's pretty amazing for the
4:43
most part and then I when I come back
4:45
with my collage I have been doing a lot
4:47
of work around the sacred feminine and
4:49
bringing that um back in not only into
4:52
my own life but into our culture you
4:55
know society and there's a lot of there
4:57
are a lot of people doing that because
5:00
so I take I've taken my collage work um
5:03
and I've been focusing on the sacred
5:05
feminine via goddesses basically so I've
5:09
done you know I pick I pick a goddess
5:12
and then I decide colors and then I
5:15
decide which of my images probably will
5:17
go best and then I just int intuitively
5:21
from there using AR you know archetypes
5:23
and symbols and you know uh powerful
5:26
goddess definitions I incorporate that
5:28
into my version of how I see each
5:30
goddess now where would somebody to go
5:33
to see your artwork would they go to
5:34
your website yes uh my yes that would be
5:38
the best place to go to see all of my
5:40
work I photography collage I have my
5:42
older paintings and drawings on there I
5:44
have my experimental video I have my
5:46
music some My Demo songs and other uh
5:50
original instrumental songs I've written
5:52
so that'll be the best place to go but
5:54
you can also follow me on Instagram I'm
5:56
pretty active there I'm very active
5:59
there as well as Facebook and Linkedin
6:01
to a lesser extent so I'm putting all of
6:03
your your handles up here right now
6:05
we'll do that again as we get towards
6:07
the end great um so people can purchase
6:10
your art right correct yes and is that
6:13
on your website or are they going to go
6:15
um where they gonna go yes so that is on
6:18
my website I have all of my photography
6:20
up for sale on my website um I'm
6:23
currently have my on my collage in a
6:25
show but I will have prices up for that
6:28
for each image pretty soon um I'm I'm
6:31
like I said I'm building my business so
6:33
I'm you know it's a process getting
6:35
everything up on the site and for sale
6:38
so what does it feel like at this point
6:40
I mean as you're going into the next
6:41
chapter of your life and you're creating
6:43
this did you just say I'm doing this and
6:45
you're and you are an example an amazing
6:48
inspiration quite frankly to everyone
6:51
who who says out loud oh I can't do this
6:55
late you're an inspiration I mean and
6:58
what does it feel like when you're done
6:59
doing your artwork and when you keep
7:01
doing it how does this manifest in you
7:09
mean yes uh well what you just said it's
7:12
never too late never too late you know
7:15
it's I mean I I know there's a lot of
7:17
discrimination out there especially with
7:19
older you know with women and older
7:21
women but you know artwork I mean
7:23
artwork and music is a little bit
7:24
different but I mean I would say that
7:26
you know anyone you can do anything at
7:29
any time you just have to put you have
7:31
to put your mind to it it's a mindset
7:33
it's beliefs it's attitude it's and
7:35
doing the work right Agreed 100% I I
7:40
agree with you I don't think it's ever
7:41
too late I think when it's too late it
7:43
means we're not here anymore we we've
7:45
like great checked out exactly that's
7:48
you know I don't think I'm ever gonna
7:49
retire I mean I'm just starting right so
7:53
and I don't know if I if I you know
7:56
creating the process of creating is very
7:59
healing um and very Soul affirming so
8:03
you know it's something I will be doing
8:05
forever whether I put my work out there
8:07
for sale or not I love that I love that
8:10
so this question always gets everyone
8:12
how do you want to be
8:14
remembered you know I I I think I would
8:18
like to be remembered by helping people
8:21
to get back to that place there Souls
8:24
path and purpose on the planet what
8:26
they're here to do what they're here to
8:27
share what they're here to give
8:30
I think that is so important you know as
8:32
we live life um so yeah I I hope to be
8:36
remember for that through my art and
8:37
music and that it's never it's never too
8:40
late so what is next for you what are
8:46
Shelly well I'm what next
8:51
so I really am I'm I'm focusing on
8:54
really creating a niche type of art for
8:58
myself and I think that's probably going
8:59
to be in collage I really really I've
9:02
gotten a really good feedback for my
9:05
goddess and sacred feminine work
9:06
especially in collage form with my
9:09
photography although I do sell my
9:11
photography as well and straight ahead
9:14
images um but I really feel like I'm
9:16
dialing in to the goddess work at the
9:21
sacred feminine work adding music to
9:23
that and incorporating that in some way
9:26
into my work into shows um and then
9:29
putting myself out there um so you know
9:31
I'm just pretty much starting in the
9:33
last year to put myself out there in a
9:35
big way and like I'm in a show right now
9:37
in Nevada City I have another solo show
9:40
locally I'm put I'm gonna be doing art
9:42
fairs this summer um you know like in
9:45
you're exhausting me you are exhausting
9:48
me oh my gosh wow wow yeah so yeah I
9:52
mean I want to travel to other you know
9:55
at Washington Oregon California maybe
9:57
some other states do some art fairs
10:00
you know I'm I'm working on getting my
10:01
work in galleries you know hopefully
10:03
museums one day um you know uh finding
10:08
collectors for my work right so yeah I
10:12
mean a lot of people you know you got to
10:13
put yourself out there because if you
10:14
people don't know about you they can't
10:16
buy your work exactly so we're gonna let
10:19
people know again how they can get in
10:20
touch with you they can go to your
10:22
website it's Shel Carlile they can visit
10:24
you on Instagram at Shell car photo art
10:27
they can also visit you on Facebook you
10:29
have two different profiles Shelly
10:30
Carlile photo artch and Shelly Carlile
10:33
on LinkedIn there's a Common Thread here
10:35
Shelly Carlile and then finally on
10:38
YouTube Shelly Carlile photo art as we
10:43
everywhere Shelly any last thoughts you
10:45
want to share with our audience as to
10:48
how we can age like a fine wine oh yeah
10:52
so one of the things that I you know
10:55
I've offered some adult animation
10:57
classes and there's a lot of resistance
11:00
a lot of adults especially older adults
11:01
say I'm not an artist we are all artists
11:05
in some way and we all have an inner
11:07
artist and believe me you get uh you
11:10
come to my class or you go to an art
11:12
class you can you know you'll have a
11:14
great time and you will be surprised at
11:17
what you can create so my message is
11:20
it's never too late go out there Follow
11:23
Your Passion follow what feeds your
11:27
soul amen am amen you heard it here uh
11:31
do what Shell's doing oh my gosh uh
11:34
thank you for spending time with us
11:36
today and to our audience we know you
11:38
have a choice as to where you spend your
11:40
time thank you for spending it with
11:42
shelle and I today go out give somebody
11:44
an awesome day and shelle we'll see
11:46
everyone next time right bye everyone
