0:03
hey everybody Welcome To Life on cour
0:06
I'm Mel Greenberg and I'm Karen Glasser
0:09
and we are so happy that you're here
0:11
cheers everyone it's the season for it
0:15
cheers so Mel you know we've been
0:18
thinking which is always dangerous but
0:20
we have been thinking specifically about
0:23
the holidays and the overload that comes
0:26
with it right I mean it can be it can
0:28
really like stop you in your tracks so I
0:32
know talking about that in so many
0:35
different ways and what what what's hard
0:38
for me right now is with everything
0:41
going on in the world this dance of it's
0:45
a beautiful time of year it's
0:46
celebrating it's Gathering it's joyful
0:49
and and yet so much of our world is
0:52
falling apart that yeah I I do this
0:56
dance of feeling guilty for being so
0:58
happy or not embracing but yet being in
1:02
the moment and it's overwhelming and I
1:05
worry about I'm sure I'm not alone and
1:07
how to deal with that and when you
1:12
Mel let us know because truly I don't
1:15
think there's a single person on this
1:16
planet right now that is not feeling the
1:19
anxiety of what's going on in the world
1:21
and then we have the holidays right and
1:23
the overload of that so you know the
1:26
question that we want to ask today is
1:28
really like how do we create peace of
1:31
mind and you know we've been listening
1:33
to everyone and you know what you're
1:35
telling us is first of all thank you you
1:37
like us and we love you right back but
1:40
in order for us to be able to be present
1:43
and to give you the best of us we
1:45
decided that um we're moving to a
1:47
different format and we're really
1:49
excited about it we're going to be doing
1:50
short little segments but weekly
1:52
segments how fun is that I know it's
1:54
kind of cool you wanted more so now
1:57
get for you asked for
2:00
and we gave it to you so we're really
2:02
excited about that and um we hope that
2:04
we hope that you are too um but
2:07
everything really has changed right
2:09
Everything Has Changed right now and so
2:11
what I mean what's going to be different
2:13
in your holiday celebrations or in your
2:15
holiday preparations mail as we go
2:17
through this month of December well for
2:21
me I have an empty nest again and and
2:23
that that comes it's it's um Bittersweet
2:28
I I loved having every body here um I
2:31
also love having my space back right
2:33
we're going to be celebrating at Matthew
2:35
and Heather's new home which will be
2:37
wonderful so it's different it's it's
2:40
like now I'm back to like decorating and
2:42
celebrating for just the two of us and I
2:44
went through that it's like do I do it
2:46
how much do I do and I thought I still
2:49
need to create an environment that gives
2:51
me joy I'm that person I like each
2:54
season I like to have everything the
2:56
candles the decorations and and it just
2:58
makes me happy so I'm trying to focus on
3:01
that and I really am trying to to be
3:04
empathetic and aware but yet still be
3:08
present in my life to where we are and
3:10
what we're doing and keeping it happy
3:12
because you know what else do we have
3:15
yeah exactly what else do we have I mean
3:18
I I'm similar to you um I I am really
3:21
trying to stay focused on the stuff that
3:24
brings me joy and leave the rest of the
3:27
noise out there um but I too normally
3:30
you know there's been just the two of us
3:31
for years so I I didn't I've had
3:34
emptiness for years and years and
3:35
normally we don't have anybody here and
3:37
it's you're right that is the challenge
3:39
do we do something just for the two of
3:41
us does anybody care and to be honest
3:44
and I feel guilty about it I generally
3:46
don't do anything because it's just why
3:49
but this year I'm doing it and I don't
3:51
know if it's because of what's going on
3:53
in the world or uh what's going on
3:55
personally in my family life you know my
3:57
father as you know has been ill and um
4:00
you know lots of things going on and I
4:02
think that I'm starting to live and
4:03
appreciate every single moment and
4:06
making every single moment bring me joy
4:08
so we're celebrating this year for sure
4:10
well and I think you and I talked about
4:12
this and how to how to start this first
4:17
peace had such a beautiful connotation
4:20
because I mean I pray for peace in this
4:21
world every day right peace of mind
4:25
peace of surrounding it just it just
4:27
touches tentacles you know touches every
4:30
part of our lives and I
4:32
wonder how how you all out there are
4:36
coping and moving through this time
4:38
going into December and now the holidays
4:41
and which in the best of
4:44
times it's overwhelming and chaotic and
4:47
crazy and emotional and now we're a
4:49
little bit of you know kind of All About
4:51
Us in the worst of times so
4:54
exponentially a thousand times worse how
4:56
do you that but I think we we also have
5:00
to remember that and it's hard not
5:02
everything is bad not everything is bad
5:06
and and that I mean I worry about
5:08
everything and it's a challenge to
5:10
remember you know not everything is bad
5:12
and I find myself when I those thoughts
5:14
come in I don't know about you I
5:16
literally stop and I say okay I need to
5:18
think about something I'm grateful for
5:20
to replace that bad thing that's in my
5:23
head what do you guys think out there I
5:25
mean how do you remove yourself from
5:29
what appears to be a lot of bad and how
5:32
do you create that space in your life
5:35
for good especially right now during the
5:37
holidays time are you going to be
5:39
celebrating with big parties our
5:40
immediate family is not huge right but
5:43
then when we start bringing in everybody
5:45
and friends and and it turns into a big
5:48
Gathering which I love and it's a chance
5:50
to celebrate different holidays together
5:54
and uh different rituals which I also
5:56
enjoy so it's it we tend to yeah we tend
5:59
to to Doo Big you know another thing
6:02
that I think during the holiday time
6:03
that we would be remiss if we don't
6:05
mention and that is mental health and
6:08
the fact that um a lot of people during
6:11
holidays their depression really kicks
6:14
in big time and well that's this is I
6:17
mean that's what it's a it's how you
6:19
walk that tight RPP and not fall off the
6:21
ledge and that's exactly what you're
6:23
saying and it's hard it is it's very
6:25
hard but knowing that you've got
6:27
community around you and knowing that
6:28
you can reach out even if you don't
6:31
you're not used to asking for help yeah
6:34
you should ask for help if you need help
6:36
um you know there's lots of resources
6:38
out there the one that I want to mention
6:39
right now because it's the easiest one
6:41
to remember and that is 988 and that is
6:44
the line it's a short uh phone code 988
6:46
sort of like 911 which is an emergency
6:48
988 is for mental health emergencies
6:52
what is that explain what the
6:54
organization is it is literally a
6:56
National Organization it is a phone
6:58
service and when you dial 988 it goes to
7:01
a central location and you say I need
7:04
help or I need a resource or I need
7:06
somebody to listen whatever that is
7:08
there are people out there and they will
7:09
route you to the right place in your
7:13
state and it's it's really and it's been
7:16
out for about a year and a half right
7:17
now and you know like anything else when
7:19
it first rolled out it was a little bit
7:21
Rocky because they didn't have all the
7:24
yet it really is an amazing uh place and
7:28
you you just call like say you can call
7:31
and say I am I'm depressed I I don't
7:34
have any family around me and it's the
7:36
holidays and I don't know who to talk to
7:38
and they'll they will connect you with a
7:39
resource to help talk you through it
7:42
walk you through it make you um a little
7:45
bit whole well I think that's that's
7:48
really nice and that's really important
7:50
because first of all you may not have
7:52
anyone to talk to or you may not want to
7:54
talk to anyone in your immediate family
7:57
but I think the holidays magn
7:59
ify loneliness yeah whether it's because
8:04
you are missing what you had perhaps as
8:06
a child or what you don't have now you
8:10
you know divorces deaths
8:12
Etc it it just magnifies it all right
8:15
all your emotions and I mean I remember
8:19
being in my 20s um alone in DC and I
8:22
would just I would kind of walk around
8:24
sometimes the streets and they'd be
8:26
empty on Christmas day right because
8:28
everyone's celebrating with their
8:29
families and I was alone at the time and
8:32
and it was a really sad time so what did
8:35
do uh usually I I would go to a
8:39
movie and because it's it's I love
8:42
movies and I would go to a theater and
8:44
you can kind of Escape in there on every
8:47
level so well that works whatever works
8:50
and that is really what we're saying
8:52
whatever works to soothe yourself take
8:54
care of yourself call a friend call a
8:56
parent if you're you're lucky enough to
8:57
still have your parents with you call
8:59
your kids call somebody um 988 call 988
9:04
or call 988 I put it down on the bottom
9:06
on the scroll just so you can write it
9:08
down we we're really happy that you guys
9:11
joined us today um we've got lots and
9:13
lots in store for you right yes we do I
9:19
think I'm I'm excited about the new
9:20
format and I'm grateful for all the
9:22
suggestions that came through over the
9:23
summer because we always take the summer
9:25
off and you all have lots of opinions
9:28
and it's great and we listen and
9:30
appreciate it so keep it coming and as
