hello everyone karen glasser here and
0:03
mel greenberg
0:05
welcome to uncorked life exposed in the
0:07
most unexpected ways where what you see
0:10
is not always what you get uncorked is
0:13
brought to you by vitalsy the guide to
0:15
living in a stage of growth purpose and
0:17
discovery and whether you're here live
0:19
or on replay please make sure to say hi
0:22
in the comments and tell us where you're
0:23
watching from
0:24
so what are we talking about today
0:26
well
0:27
self-care and more specifically it's the
0:31
holidays something's got to give
0:34
we're being pulled in every direction
0:35
but first
0:37
in that direction
0:39
everyone cheers to
0:41
what are you drinking i'm drinking
0:43
eggnog yum
0:45
yum well i took the other route of
0:47
course i'm drinking a mold cider i
0:50
happen to like that one
0:52
i do that mauling spices
0:54
so i simmer them on the stove and they
0:56
just permeate through the house it's
0:57
fabulous i think we have a recipe for
0:59
that in the kit we'll talk about that
1:02
later on
1:05
so let's talk a little bit about
1:06
self-care when we say that what does
1:08
that mean
1:09
you know it means so much and during the
1:12
holidays it takes on it's this own it
1:14
balloons i think because whatever you
1:17
practice during the year seems to go out
1:20
the window and after thanksgiving right
1:22
you hit the ground running black friday
1:24
cyber monday right you're addressing and
1:27
taking care of everyone else so it's
1:30
really important that you step back and
1:32
take care of yourself because
1:35
if your cup is empty and i believe this
1:37
you're no good to anybody i totally so
1:39
from that extent this is also a time
1:41
while you are out running rampant to do
1:44
and be to everyone
1:46
to step back and breathe and take care
1:48
of yourself
1:50
sometimes it's hard to find the time
1:52
though right yeah sometimes you just
1:53
have to say okay i'm gonna make the time
1:56
because it is the most busy season as
1:58
you say and we get pulled in all
2:01
different directions i mean we really do
2:03
um you know from the family to cooking
2:07
to gift buying to um making donut you
2:10
know making your donations for the year
2:12
charity there's so many things going on
2:15
in my case i i do take time for myself
2:18
and i do it in multiple ways i um i
2:21
drink okay
2:22
well okay that goes with that all right
2:24
okay besides the drinking um i meditate
2:28
and i do it morning and night um i i
2:31
read i read poetry and i read things
2:33
that really touches my soul and i listen
2:35
to music
2:36
a lot yes a lot what do you do well
2:39
music is always on i i alexa and i are
2:42
very close
2:43
and i have her in every room and
2:45
it is it is soothing and it brings you
2:48
to a space where you can kind of tune
2:50
out the world
2:51
i also meditate i love to be out in
2:54
nature i walk i do yoga
2:57
i've actually started
3:00
taking my dogs for hikes and any chance
3:02
i can to get out into nature is a way to
3:05
decompress and sort of reconnect
3:08
and then when you get back into the
3:10
hustle it has a different sense to it
3:13
and you have a lighter sense of being
3:15
and it's really important i i agree with
3:17
that i i really agree with that so you
3:20
know we want to create some really
3:22
relaxing uh you know surroundings for
3:24
ourselves and rituals um
3:26
you know you mentioned that you do yo
3:28
you do meditate you meditation you cook
3:31
we've been cooking since you since
3:32
you've been by the way guys you do you
3:34
like our our um our channel our jammies
3:37
we are we are very comfortable because
3:39
this is this is how we take care of
3:41
ourselves right
3:42
um i'm not a bath taker and a youtube i
3:44
love that yes
3:46
i'm not that's not my thing and that's
3:48
and that's a ritual right candles uh
3:51
aromatherapy oils in the bathtub and
3:54
uh fireplace some wine music you know
3:58
again anything to kind of you know i
4:00
like to
4:02
kind of step away from the world i i do
4:04
too and but i would also say that um
4:07
well i have morning rituals i'm up at a
4:10
god-awful hour i'm up at four in the
4:11
morning um and the only way that uh that
4:14
works is that i have rituals that i do i
4:17
meditate as we said i i exercise a
4:19
little bit um i drink my water i do all
4:22
my little things my little rich rituals
4:24
um and and it helps i think it keeps us
4:27
focused one of the other things i like
4:28
to do during the holiday times is go
4:30
look at lights
4:31
oh yeah
4:33
i love that i remember that from
4:35
childhood it was it was a big thing
4:36
again the car and family would drive
4:38
around and look at the neighbors and the
4:40
neighborhoods with lights and right yeah
4:42
i think it's i think every place has the
4:44
same thing there's always somewhere in
4:46
your city that the blocks the grass
4:49
right christmas that everyone that you
4:51
know everybody on the street has
4:52
decorated their houses
4:54
where i used to live every house was
4:56
decorated so we just had to walk right
4:58
outside wow and look around and see what
5:01
was out there um i really really really
5:03
enjoy that with my cup of cocoa right
5:06
yeah and my you know my marshmallows in
5:08
it and we we just drive and we drink
5:10
well i don't drink alcohol when i'm
5:11
driving but i drink you know cocoa
5:13
that's a holiday absolutely that's
5:15
totally absolutely totally um so how do
5:18
in your relaxing se do you have like a
5:20
place that you go meditate do you do i
5:26
either outside
5:27
um i have a fountain and i have seating
5:29
there
5:30
and i also have a table where i write
5:32
and i get i am an early person also and
5:34
i've actually started just recently kind
5:38
of shifting my morning getting up
5:39
earlier because i would i would lie in
5:41
bed and you know then your mind starts
5:43
going and that's never a good thing
5:45
so instead of trying to go back to sleep
5:47
for an hour and then waking up more
5:48
groggy okay it's 4 30 i'm getting up i
5:51
go to another part of our outside and
5:54
it's east facing so i live in the
5:57
foothills uh in arizona and there's it's
5:59
very quiet and at that time of morning
6:01
just the only you know it's the animals
6:03
in the wild my father awake so my dogs
6:05
and i sit outside i have my i have my
6:07
morning which i drink lemon water and
6:09
then cucumber or excuse me uh celery
6:11
juice
6:12
and i watch the sun come up and then as
6:14
that and in the silence and that is in
6:17
and of itself meditative and i think
6:19
that's important to know too because
6:21
meditation is anything really where you
6:23
just kind of
6:25
quiet yourself and your mind whether
6:28
it's walking and looking you know or
6:29
sitting and doing a guided meditation
6:31
which is equally beneficial so that's my
6:34
meditation and then i do my morning
6:35
pages okay okay so and and writing and
6:38
then i get my day started and and coffee
6:40
it's always called coffee well of course
6:42
coffee i'm sure
6:44
for our viewers that are watching their
6:45
pro some of them may be saying i don't
6:47
know how to meditate how do i do this
6:48
and we're going to be talking about this
6:50
in months to come but
6:51
if you want to get started right now
6:53
there are a lot of apps out there that
6:54
all you have to do is download they're
6:56
free right and if you if you happen to
6:58
like a guided meditation what that
7:00
really means is somebody is leading you
7:02
through the meditation or maybe you just
7:04
want to listen to really great music or
7:07
you want to listen to sound and or asmr
7:09
which is kind of have you ever done that
7:11
that's really cool it's like
7:13
they literally record the noises that
7:16
you make maybe when you eat when you
7:18
brush your teeth it is it is an actual
7:21
thing guys look it up it is really weird
7:24
but but you know it's really weird but
7:26
some people like that so we encourage
7:27
you to go check out it'll be in the kit
7:29
you go check out inside timer and david
7:32
gandelman he's amazing he is there are
7:35
so many and we are going to be covering
7:36
those things absolutely but you know
7:38
what you just made me think of someone
7:40
my mind again
7:42
recording yourself eating no but
7:45
something that's really really
7:47
calming to me and enjoyable to me is
7:50
cooking
7:51
and it's the combination of the scents
7:52
and and and the aromas through the house
7:55
and and then feeding i mean i think you
7:57
know mothers or women in general i think
8:00
we we want to take care of those around
8:02
us whether they be other family members
8:04
or friends
8:05
and this time of year cooking and your
8:07
traditions traditional meals or the
8:10
season it's just from you know from
8:12
really from halloween on it's my
8:14
favorite and do it with a friend cook
8:16
with a friend we're going to be cooking
8:17
together on some shows in the future
8:20
get on a zoom on a face time i know
8:21
whatever and decide what you're going to
8:23
do together
8:24
maybe it's the same recipe maybe it's
8:26
not two different recipes and do it and
8:29
that's a great way to take care of
8:30
yourself you're incorporating your
8:32
friends you're incorporating the smells
8:34
the the actual act you know during this
8:36
whole pandemic
8:37
i never i was never a baker ever really
8:40
never and during the pandemic um
8:43
i started face timing with my sister and
8:46
we started baking
8:48
so i love it
8:50
like every week we baked something from
8:52
cinnamon roll cinnamon cake um regular
8:56
bread and then we found this amazing
8:57
recipe the best the best that i
9:00
introduced to mel yesterday and we baked
9:03
bread together and there's something
9:05
about putting your hands into the dough
9:08
and mixing it it's very sensual um it
9:11
really is very sensual and then eating
9:14
what you cooked later on i mean it is so
9:16
amazing um
9:18
for days for days for days it is it's
9:20
really great i got hair sticking to my
9:22
lips there it is that's what yeah i got
9:24
here um so that's and cooking is great
9:27
and do it with a friend why not right
9:30
and traditions during the holidays you
9:32
know cookie exchange we want to eat
9:33
healthier and there are so many great
9:35
recipes out there for sweets there are
9:38
alternatives
9:39
what i used to do when the kids were
9:41
young and in school i would always host
9:42
a cookie exchange and the joke was kind
9:44
of you know the jewish girl at school
9:46
and then my house was was rifled with
9:48
sweets and beautifully decorated treats
9:50
and that in and of itself created
9:53
by tradition so again
9:56
like from from the point of self-care
9:57
it's such a broad overarching statement
10:01
but every little thing you do so i
10:03
couldn't possibly
10:05
the thought of baking a hundred cookies
10:07
would give me anxiety it's giving me and
10:10
i know i'm just saying that i'm getting
10:11
like let's see but self-care i said how
10:14
can i do this how can i provide this for
10:16
my family and having a party it was so
10:18
fun and everyone's sharing their recipes
10:21
and and then they're the the you know
10:23
the fruits of their labor and carrying
10:25
that on self-care so it can manifest
10:28
itself in so many ways and so be open to
10:31
that think about any little way that you
10:33
can kind of take care of yourself and
10:35
please share those with us because we
10:36
would love to know in the comments let
10:38
us know how do you take self-care for
10:41
yourself what do you do what are your
10:42
rituals what are the things that you do
10:45
to help
10:46
you know bring you to a place of calm
10:49
and peace well and how do you cope
10:52
now during this this time and for many
10:56
of us we are we our houses are empty our
10:58
children grandchildren are coming to
11:00
visit us so if you're alone isolated or
11:03
needing to be out with them or travel to
11:05
them how are you coping with that during
11:07
these times and how are you taking care
11:09
of yourself you know i was thinking when
11:10
you were talking about the cookies and
11:12
doing that you know
11:14
i think homemade gifts are the best yes
11:17
right gifts from the kitchen and if you
11:20
have a particular recipe or skill or
11:22
something that you do it may even be
11:23
that you cook something and bring it to
11:25
someone that really needs it that's a
11:27
wonderful way it feels good for you and
11:29
it feels good for the person you're
11:30
giving and and you were
11:33
finding peace while you were why you do
11:35
it and i find such such satisfaction in
11:37
planning and executing and then giving
11:41
last year for our company i did i made
11:43
candles and i ordered tins and i got the
11:46
cutest little
11:48
uh containers for the candles um did a
11:51
holiday scent
11:53
and then made labels for everyone and
11:55
yeah were they the best candles no i
11:57
could have gone out and bought beautiful
11:58
because it doesn't matter but it was
12:00
from that gave such satisfaction so
12:02
warmed my heart filled me up self-care
12:05
it's that simple and and that's what
12:07
this is all about so we want to share
12:09
some of the items that are in our encore
12:11
kit
12:12
because we picks well actually mel
12:15
picked them out she's really good at
12:16
this so this one i'm gonna you're gonna
12:18
see i'm gonna yeah i'm gonna put this up
12:20
right now pj harlow and i'm actually
12:23
wearing the monroe gown and the bed
12:25
jacket and it's long and i literally
12:27
came across this brand while we were in
12:31
rosemary beach over the summer and
12:33
there's a beautiful little shop there
12:34
called pish posh
12:36
and i went back and got every they
12:38
ordered every color for me because
12:41
you can i could put a belt on this and
12:43
go out if you filthy trust me if you
12:45
felt it you'd say it's washable satin
12:48
and it's reasonably priced pajamas short
12:51
little boxers everything you can imagine
12:54
so nice and so comfortable
12:56
how many of you on facebook end up being
12:58
intrigued by a product that shows up in
13:01
your feed and you go and buy it right
13:03
you go oh that looks really really well
13:04
i did that and that is actually what i'm
13:07
wearing today i found it on facebook
13:09
it's a company called skivvies it is a
13:11
brushed cotton it washes it's so
13:14
comfortable i feel like i could wear
13:15
this out you could wear it like a
13:16
totally we may do that maybe that's
13:18
we're good we'll see you we're leaving
13:20
tonight
13:21
see ya
13:23
um but comfort and that's also part of
13:25
self-care it is it's being feeling
13:26
luxurious instead of throwing on your
13:28
ratty t-shirt that you sleep i know i
13:31
like this little shimata that you
13:32
wouldn't barely right out of the line
13:34
yeah right exactly exactly what else do
13:37
we have
13:41
this has been happening this entire week
13:43
we've been together let's talk about
13:45
these candles i'm all about the aroma
13:48
and there are so many and healthy you
13:50
wanna you you know i would recommend soy
13:53
base yes the wood wicks the the way they
13:56
burn and and do do your research don't
13:58
just buy the candles the cheap candles
14:00
in the
14:05
it's almost like well it is it's
14:06
aromatherapy that's coming out of a
14:08
candle and that i don't if if you've
14:11
never tried aroma therapy if you've
14:13
never used candles to set the mood and
14:16
set the whole environment
14:17
think about doing that right yes
14:20
it's it's amazing yeah calming
14:23
exhilarating whatever you want to feel
14:25
you can get it from your candles and
14:26
with their eggnog or your coffee or
14:29
whatever
14:30
mugs and have fun with them get these i
14:33
found these and i fell in love with the
14:35
they're just they're happy
14:37
and again it's it's treating yourself
14:40
well
14:40
don't go get the paper cut cup if you
14:43
don't have to if you have a couple of
14:44
really nice mugs that
14:47
make you feel like uh it's really the
14:49
the actual enjoyment is not just the
14:52
liquid but the action
14:54
yeah right of the visual and then the
14:57
drinking of it i i just absolutely love
14:59
these well i'll share something with the
15:01
mugs i my i have my grandmother's
15:04
teacups and she collected
15:06
over the years beautiful hand painted
15:08
little you know and you don't think you
15:10
think of tea you have to have tea
15:11
i drink espresso or americano i have my
15:14
morning tea in those cups so not only am
15:17
i enjoying the coffee which i love so
15:19
much but i'm holding it and she's there
15:21
with me i'm remembering her and that
15:23
takes me down another memory which warms
15:25
my heart so so yeah
15:27
so totally self-care so we have
15:30
lots of other items in the kits but
15:32
these are the ones that we kind of
15:33
wanted to highlight today
15:36
for the month of
15:38
december so check it out on the uncourt
15:40
kit just go to bit dot lee forward slash
15:43
uncorked live it's all capitalized go
15:45
check that out and
15:47
i have our questions yeah because just
15:49
you know this month it's the holidays
15:51
and
15:52
we are all celebrating so many different
15:54
holidays
15:55
and i have a variety within our family
15:59
what what do you celebrate how do you
16:00
celebrate we sell well my son just got
16:03
married and um
16:05
she is not jewish i'm jewish
16:07
we celebrate hanukkah but
16:10
and she is learning she's learning the
16:11
traditions as well from my with my son
16:13
for hanukkah but she's christian so you
16:15
know they also they celebrate christmas
16:17
and they do they do the whole thing
16:19
because you can't have too much
16:22
celebration right celebration but we we
16:24
do the hanukkah um i make latkes
16:27
same yum yum outdoors though because the
16:30
house i have an electric fryer i do in
16:32
my outdoors so that my hair does not
16:34
smell like a lot guys for the next month
16:38
and the house doesn't even talk about
16:40
that's the truth it's interesting yeah
16:42
you make like this i do in the house so
16:44
now i mean
16:45
you know and we do the you know we with
16:47
the applesauce and the sour cream but i
16:49
actually do something that's really like
16:51
special i do um my latkes with creme
16:54
fraiche and caviar
17:00
okay
17:01
sour cream
17:02
applesauce done done
17:05
um we mentioned in the beginning that
17:07
