0:04
hello everyone Karen Glasser here and
0:07
welcome to life Uncorked today's segment
0:09
is called Aging like a fine wine and I'm
0:12
here with Sonia leco she's the owner of
0:14
the West Los Angeles Chef's for seniors
0:17
good afternoon Sonia how are you today I
0:20
am great thank you for having me Karen
0:23
this is lovely I am so thrilled to have
0:25
this conversation and this is all about
0:27
people ordinary people who do
0:29
extraordinary things and you're one of
0:31
them um let's talk a little bit about
0:33
your story and then how you got to where
0:36
you are today take us back just a little
0:38
bit how did you get here well I would
0:42
um start with then I came in the United
0:47
1997 I am Italian and
0:51
swiss um raised in Switzerland from
0:54
Italian parents and uh when I came in
0:57
1997 because I fell in love with
1:03
husband we who I met in
1:06
Switzerland and um so it was the um
1:11
Valentine's Day 1997 when I came here
1:14
and the first thing I learned and
1:18
embraced and I was really happy about
1:23
States for me has been very easy to
1:26
reinvent myself ah reinvention I love
1:29
that I love reinvented myself and I
1:32
could have the opportunity to look into
1:35
myself and see okay what do I want to do
1:39
up I was in my 30s so and um and from
1:44
then it's has been an exploration and uh
1:48
I went to I started uh I continue
1:52
actually my education special education
1:55
here in the United States uh from where
1:58
I left off in Switzerland
2:00
and I signed up for classes then I went
2:03
to Cate Northridge and I got my BA in
2:08
development and at that time my son was
2:11
four years old and I a couple of years
2:16
later that I graduated I bought my son's
2:19
preschool basically the preschool where
2:21
my son used to go oh wow little
2:26
California and uh I ran it for almost 10
2:30
and uh then I sold in
2:33
2018 and uh I decided again to look into
2:36
myself say now I a little older but I'm
2:40
still growing up what I wanted to yes
2:43
and uh so I wanted to put together my
2:47
passion for cooking because I was raised
2:50
in a family where uh the Italian family
2:54
when then the and the cooking it's
2:57
important is that eating is important it
3:01
brings the family together right yes and
3:04
so I I wanted to I always like to cook
3:08
and and uh love making pasta from
3:11
scratch and so I wanted to do a business
3:15
because now you know I once you have
3:17
your own business start to go back
3:19
working with someone else I wanted to
3:21
continue working for myself be my own
3:24
boss and maybe having people working
3:26
with me and so when I was re searching
3:31
um something to do in in with the
3:34
cooking and I came across to Chef for
3:37
seniors this uh FR and the franchise
3:41
opportunity um I looked at I feel out
3:45
those three lines of information I send
3:48
it out and they call me within five
3:50
minutes wow and I think they liked me
3:55
and I liked them and their purpose and
3:59
and chefer being founded by the father
4:01
and the son in Madison Wisconsin I I
4:05
love this and you and what my audience
4:07
doesn't know is that I actually met you
4:09
through chefs for seniors yes in
4:12
researching how to make sure that my
4:15
parents who are seniors get um healthy
4:19
delicious meals in in you know at their
4:21
home and a little bit about chefs for
4:24
seniors this is not your traditional
4:26
they send you food and it's in these
4:27
little packages how does chefs senior's
4:30
work Chef for Senor does um
4:33
basically um when I received the phone
4:37
call and I set up an appointment with
4:40
the with the potential clients and I go
4:43
to the home I sit down with them and I
4:45
go through a questionnaire of likes and
4:48
dislikes what they uh what their goal is
4:52
what their needs are and uh and then we
4:56
sent a a chef the chef in the also the
5:00
seniors so that live independently and
5:04
uh we have our own pots and pants but
5:06
we're happy to use the client equipment
5:09
for needed uh the chef buy the groceries
5:14
that need to execute the meal so they
5:17
don't have to worry that about about
5:19
purchasing what they need so the chef
5:22
Cooks uh put in containers that can be
5:25
stored in the refrigerator in the
5:30
uh cleans up which is very important
5:32
always the client ask does she clean up
5:35
after right yes uh yeah what I what I
5:39
realize with my parents is first of all
5:41
the food is delicious there's there's
5:43
that companionship here's the chef that
5:45
becomes your right almost like a family
5:46
that comes in it's once a week every two
5:48
weeks there she she or he are making
5:51
food uh for the individuals in the
5:53
household based upon their uh dietary
5:56
issues you know low salt maybe it's
5:59
kosher maybe it's vegetarian whatever it
6:01
is and you provide that service and I am
6:04
fascinated by this because I didn't even
6:06
know this thing existed and I'm thrilled
6:10
that you did the research and found them
6:11
because this is literally a national
6:13
company right this is
6:15
not when I bought into shefford seniors
6:21
2019 um I was number 41 in uh in as a
6:27
franchisee and I was uh on only we were
6:30
two in the in California that time now I
6:34
think they uh closed the 20 23 years
6:37
with 95 96 franchises right and uh we
6:43
are 12 or 13 here in California so
6:46
that's amazing that's an amazing growth
6:49
obviously um so you know I have to
6:52
really ask you what drives you now in
6:55
this stage of your life I mean you're
6:57
doing chefs for seniors you just you did
6:59
your research you started in 2019 it's
7:02
2023 you're growing what's what's
7:04
actually driving you why do you keep it
7:07
it is giving back a little bit you know
7:09
giving back a little because it's it's a
7:11
service it's something that I can help
7:16
people can provide I've been very
7:18
fortunate in my life and uh so I want to
7:22
do something that's as a as a meaning as
7:26
that it's helpful and when I purchasing
7:31
franchise and talking with the
7:33
franchisers with Nathan and Barrett anen
7:37
all men sorry and they um I the first
7:42
impression after hang up the phone with
7:44
them said this is a business with a
7:46
heart and that's really what I wanted oh
7:49
that's that's wonderful so you know I
7:51
always like to ask my guests this
7:53
question that makes you think and that
7:55
is how do you want to be remembered as
7:58
we as we travel on this journey called
8:00
life and we have kids you have you have
8:02
you know kids how do you want to be
8:04
remembered do you want your kids to
8:06
remember you in a certain way maybe as
8:07
they get older and they have kids
8:08
themselves the grandkids remembering you
8:10
how do you want to be remembered about
8:13
the good smell in my kitchen oh what a
8:16
wonderful answer that that that that's
8:18
it if I because that's
8:21
what I remember from my childhood images
8:25
and this mess so that that to me when I
8:30
think there are some moments that the
8:31
hard in in life and that I do this and
8:38
grandma's cooking oh I love that
8:42
I so Sonia what's next for you I know
8:45
you're going to continue doing this are
8:47
do you have other aspirations as
8:49
well well it's um I try to grow the
8:53
business much as possible obviously and
8:56
um I am part of this um organization
9:02
called Senior Services Foundation SSP
9:06
and we are uh trying to get more
9:09
involved with them and what we do is
9:12
also provide services in general for
9:15
seniors and they have in California
9:18
different chapters so I hope to be a
9:24
voice in in that uh and what a great
9:28
what a great um collaboration having you
9:31
with the food and the the nurturing and
9:33
this everything it's beautiful for those
9:36
were watching right now we're going to
9:37
show you how you can get in touch and
9:39

10:30
would like to do would like to continue
10:32
to cook for the my H for the other
10:35
people especially when those she just
10:37
not for the people and with the hope
10:40
that bring their family together sharing
10:43

10:47
