hello everyone Karen Glasser here and
0:02
welcome to the show do you know how to
0:05
have Unstoppable grip let me say that
0:08
again because that was a tongue twister
0:10
do you know how to have Unstoppable grit
0:14
do you even know what that means can you
0:15
even say that 10 times fast I don't know
0:18
but today we are talking about that and
0:21
more with transformational speaker and
0:24
career consultant Danielle Kobo welcome
0:26
to the show boy that's a tongue twister
0:30
it is a tongue twister I finally got it
0:33
out welcome Daniel thank you for joining
0:35
us today how are you I am doing
0:37
fantastic how are you doing today I am
0:39
doing great I'm really excited that
0:41
you're here because we're talking about
0:43
your new book that just launched and
0:45
some great news we'll talk about that in
0:47
a second but first let's talk about your
0:49
journey how did you get here you're a
0:51
former Fortune 500 senior sales manager
0:55
um you are an acclaimed speaker
0:57
best-selling author and podcast host
0:59
what don't you do tell us how you got to
1:01
where you are today well I started my
1:03
career in medical sales so I spent 15
1:06
years in medical uh device sales and
1:09
Capital Equipment Sales before leaving
1:12
the corporate world and then becoming a
1:14
speaker and an author and a whole lot of
1:16
hats that I wear that I did not
1:18
anticipate I would be wearing one day if
1:20
you would have asked me three years ago
1:22
would I be here today I would have said
1:23
absolutely not how fun is that though
1:27
because literally whatever you put your
1:29
money into you're doing and that is a
1:32
great example for all of us so we're
1:34
going to jump into the book because I'm
1:36
really excited this book is called
1:37
Unstoppable Unstoppable what is wrong
1:40
with me grit what does that mean
1:42
Unstoppable grit is so Angela Duckworth
1:45
does a definition of grit which is
1:47
passion and perseverance towards
1:48
long-term goals and I believe that grit
1:51
is when passion and perseverance to
1:52
long-term goal and when setbacks occur
1:55
it's the action to take a step forward
1:57
and continuing to move forward so it's
2:00
but in order to have grit I believe it's
2:03
important that we have Clarity on what
2:05
our passions are without Clarity it's
2:07
really hard to have grit now you say in
2:10
the book that there are seven roadblocks
2:12
that are standing between you and
2:14
achieving your goals tell us one what
2:17
would be one roadblock one of the
2:20
roadblocks is the H the apprehension of
2:23
others opinions so so often we are so
2:27
there's maybe a risk that we want to
2:28
take in life maybe it start stting a
2:30
business maybe it's going for a
2:31
promotion maybe it's uh whatever
2:34
personal goal that we might have but we
2:36
start to hesitate because we start to
2:38
worry about what other people's opinions
2:40
are versus really looking in and what's
2:42
going to be fulfilling to us and so
2:45
apprehension of others opinions is one
2:46
of the
2:47
roadblocks so what do you suggest to
2:50
people because if we all have that um is
2:53
there a tip that you can give us that
2:55
will at least alleviate a little bit of
2:57
that what I've what I I've learned in
3:00
life is there's always going to be other
3:02
people's opinions but if you live your
3:04
life based off of other people's
3:05
opinions you're never going to live live
3:07
the life that you truly desire and truly
3:09
want and you know there's going to be
3:11
people that are going to judge you and a
3:12
lot of times that judgment comes from
3:14
their own insecurities inside so don't
3:16
let other people's insecurities hold you
3:19
back from pursuing the goals that you
3:20
want in your life so how would you
3:23
define the word goals because I I know
3:26
that a lot of us say well I don't have
3:27
goals because I don't ever achiev them
3:30
you know the beginning of the year I
3:31
have my goals and then 3 days later I
3:33
forgot what they are how would you
3:35
define a goal and how how do people
3:37
actually stand on track for those things
3:40
yeah it's interesting so one of the
3:41
reasons why I had the book launch now
3:45
specifically this week is because by the
3:47
second research shows by the second week
3:49
of February 87% of the people give up on
3:52
their New Year's resolutions and it's
3:54
because people set out and they have
3:57
these goals but then they give up on
3:59
them so how do we break free from that
4:02
right yeah so um in so one of the ways
4:06
that I look at what are my goals every
4:08
single year I create a vision board and
4:12
it's an exercise that I have done for 20
4:14
plus years my kids are six years old
4:17
they are now starting to do it as well
4:19
and I believe that when you are
4:22
intentional about writing down your
4:25
goals
4:27
and actually putting in and writing down
4:30
what steps you're going to take to
4:32
achieve your goals that is going to help
4:34
you achieve your goals but doc there's a
4:36
researcher um a psychologist Dr Frank
4:39
Niles and he says that it's not a matter
4:41
of just manifesting your goals by having
4:44
a vision board when you have something
4:45
that is in front of you A visual
4:47
representation it creates top of- mind
4:49
awareness that is going to remind you
4:51
every single day of what you're working
4:53
towards so those moments when you're
4:54
feeling deflated and overwhelmed or
4:56
you're feeling like I don't know if I
4:58
can do this having that visual
4:59
representation of not only what your
5:01
goal is But A visual representation of
5:04
also what are you going to reward
5:06
yourself when you achieve that goal is
5:09
gonna help create top mind awareness so
5:10
my vision board sits above my desk I can
5:12
look at it right now it sits above my
5:14
desk every day well you know what
5:15
Danielle my vision board actually lives
5:17
on my desktop
5:19
computer I actually uploaded so I look
5:22
at mine every single day as well and I
5:24
call my goals intentions I guess I don't
5:26
want to like get too too I'm going to a
5:29
goal it's an intention and I do the same
5:32
thing as you do I have those steps that
5:34
get us to the intention if you are
5:35
tuning in right now we are talking to
5:37
Danielle Kobo we're talking about her
5:39
new book Unstoppable grit I said it
5:42
right break through the seven roadblock
5:44
standing between you and achieving your
5:46
goals if you have a question or a
5:48
comment and you want to chat with Daniel
5:50
make sure you put it in the comments and
5:52
we will put it up on the screen now you
5:56
say that it's not just about reaching
5:58
your goals it's about who you become in
6:01
that process so can you elaborate on
6:03
that yeah so I went through a series of
6:06
Life altering events in 2020 so in 2019
6:10
my husband had served a year deployment
6:12
in Iraq at the time my kids were between
6:14
the ages of one and a half and two and a
6:16
half years old so January 26th he comes
6:19
back from
6:21
deployment and it was a lot harder than
6:24
what we had anticipated he was a
6:26
different person coming back from War I
6:28
was a different person was used to
6:29
making the sole decisions of all the
6:31
parenting and now I've got to have
6:32
discussions on our parenting Styles and
6:35
he you know when he left they were
6:37
drinking out of bottles they were
6:38
learning to walk they were saying their
6:41
first words he comes back and they're
6:43
formulating complete sentences they're
6:45
talking back and throwing temper
6:46
tantrums so it was a big shift for us
6:49
and right when we started to find our
6:52
Rhythm March 8th I lost my mom my mom
6:56
had actually passed and she passed away
6:58
from suicide
6:59
so
7:01
she yeah I I was absolutely devastated
7:04
when I found out the news and and and
7:06
mainly because I couldn't believe that
7:08
she was in so much pain that she felt
7:10
that the only decision to relieve that
7:13
pain was to take her life and it's a
7:15
permanent solution to a temporary
7:17
problem and so and I say her life was
7:21
taken from her because I do believe it's
7:22
related to mental health it is not uh
7:25
she didn't commit suicide she was taken
7:27
by Suicide and so right after that March
7:31
13th Global pandemic shuts the world
7:33
down the uncertainty of what is life
7:36
going to look like how long is this
7:37
going to last what is this virus and
7:40
then the company that I was with was
7:42
acquired by another organization and I
7:44
found myself in a very toxic work
7:46
environment um and so these series of
7:49
life-altering events within a six-month
7:52
period completely shifted the way that I
7:55
looked at my life and how I wanted to
7:57
show up in life and also who I wanted to
8:00
be I had tied my identity to my paycheck
8:03
to my job title to my sales Awards but I
8:06
wasn't necessarily happy and it wasn't
8:09
until I was writing my mom's obituary
8:13
when I started to think about what would
8:16
it be like if somebody was writing my
8:18
obituary what do I want to be known for
8:21
and so one of the exercises I typically
8:24
will take people through when they're
8:25
trying to get clarity on what they want
8:27
their life to look like is I call the
8:29
Legacy exercise where you write your own
8:32
obituary from the perspective of a
8:34
colleague and from the perspective of a
8:36
family member and you write down what do
8:38
you want people to say about you when
8:41
you when it's time for you to pass well
8:45
Daniel you already know I was going to
8:46
ask you this question and that was how
8:47
do you want to be remembered I had no
8:49
idea that you were going to say what you
8:52
said so I just want I'm going to jump
8:54
ahead to that for a minute and we'll go
8:55
backwards so I'm sure you did the
8:58
exercise yourself how how do you want to
9:01
be
9:02
remembered I want to be remembered for
9:04
making a positive impact in the world so
9:06
one of my greatest uh what is the most
9:09
fulfilling to me is when I am with
9:11
somebody and I start to hear them talk
9:14
about themselves it's like the limiting
9:16
beliefs that they've had and being able
9:18
to provide them with the tools to break
9:19
through those limiting beliefs and see
9:21
them pursue goals that may they may not
9:24
have thought about or they've been too
9:26
scared to or they've been apprehended of
9:28
of pursuing and to see them do it an
9:30
accomplishment that to me is is very
9:33
fulfilling so I would just want to make
9:35
a positive impact in this world and feel
9:37
like I'm making a transformation in
9:39
people's lives and I'm sure that's
9:41
exactly why you do this you want to
9:43
break through those roadblocks and and
9:44
you want to make sure that they can
9:46
achieve their goals at least put them on
9:48
the road to achieving their goals let me
9:50
put up um some very impressive stats uh
9:54
the book is live right they can go over
9:56
to Amazon I will in a second put up that
9:59
QR code but it's a bestseller in women
10:01
in business it's a bestseller in job
10:03
hunting it's in the new release number
10:05
four in women in business number three
10:08
in job hunting number 44 in motivational
10:10
self-help first of all let's just
10:12
applaud yay you that is so awesome how
10:16
does it feel to be a best-selling
10:18
author I it's still sinking in it is
10:22
still sinking in um I had it's it's so
10:25
rewarding to see that a putting a year
10:28
and a half into writing this book but
10:30
what's the most rewarding I mean it's
10:32
nice to see best bestseller what is the
10:35
most rewarding is when I'm receiving the
10:36
text messages and the word that I
10:38
consistently hear from people that are
10:40
that have had the opportunity to read
10:42
the book already is this book is
10:44
transformative wow so that so that was
10:49
your purpose and it has been received
10:52
very very cool so we're talking about
10:54
your book right now and um I want to let
10:57
people know that they can pick it up
10:59
right now there's a QR code if you've
11:01
never done this before and you're
11:02
looking at a desktop or a laptop get
11:05
your phone out turn the camera on and
11:08
scam this it will take you right there
11:11
if you are not on your desktop but you
11:13
are on just your phone don't worry about
11:17
it just when you get off the show you
11:18
can screenshot it and you'll be able to
11:20
go right over to Amazon because that's
11:23
where it lives it's on Amazon it's
11:24
Barnes and it's everywhere right it's
11:26
it's everywhere so I'm going to give
11:28
everyone to call to action right now
11:30
because we would love for you to go
11:32
check out the book pick up a copy of it
11:34
and don't forget to leave Danielle a
11:36
review on Amazon it helps get her to the
11:39
number one bestseller that we know that
11:41
we know that she
11:43
is okay so where have you been or where
11:49
do you want to go that inspires you or
11:51
motivates you at this time in your
11:57
life I believe I I said when I was
12:00
writing the book that I would never
12:01
write another book but because it was
12:04
such a long process I mean I would wake
12:07
up before my kids would get up in the
12:08
morning it'd be dark outside there was
12:10
times where there was a category 4
12:12
hurricane headed towards us and I had my
12:13
computer hooked up to a generator and I
12:16
was writing this book and I told myself
12:17
I would never write another book and
12:19
sure enough I have carved out time to
12:22
write another book so I excited for the
12:24
next congrats on that no you said that
12:27
you pivoted um you went from being in
12:29
corporate world you know doing all the
12:31
things that you do and then life changed
12:34
for you and it no longer was satisfying
12:36
what was that pivot like I mean I can
12:38
only imagine going from
12:41
corporate wearing the the the nice
12:44
clothes right doing everything that
12:46
you're supposed to do and then moving
12:47
into what I would cons you're you're an
12:50
entrepreneur you're a small business
12:52
owner you're solopreneur what was that
12:54
like the pivot work going for working
12:56
for somebody else to working for
12:59
yourself
13:01
terrifying and still is and still is you
13:04
know I would been I was thinking about
13:06
this the other day I had been in my
13:08
career for 15 years I had been a manager
13:10
for seven years so I had reached a point
13:13
in my career where it was kind of
13:14
starting to feel like second nature I
13:16
knew what to expect I you know
13:18
challenges that were coming my way I had
13:19
dealt with them before I knew how to
13:21
respond to it but as an entrepreneur
13:24
it's almost like you're starting all
13:25
over again you're taking all the
13:27
knowledge from your years of working
13:29
corporate and my experience of helping
13:31
other businesses grow their businesses
13:33
and be successful but doing it for
13:35
yourself is very different I went from
13:37
let's really paint the picture of what
13:39
corporate life was like I had a company
13:41
car I had stock options I had a
13:43
six-figure salary I had commission I had
13:47
health benefits and now all of a sudden
13:50
I'm starting from me I am responsible
13:54
for generating everything for me myself
13:56
my family right and it's ter terrifying
13:59
it absolutely is and every time I think
14:01
back to oh it would be so nice to go
14:04
back to corporate and kind of have that
14:06
security and that cushion and I always
14:08
ask myself but would I be fulfilled in
14:11
the same way that I am today and I just
14:13
don't know it this point because my job
14:16
is so fulfilling at this point you know
14:19
if you're if you're tuning in right now
14:20
we're talking about facing the fear and
14:23
doing it anyways leaving and in your
14:25
case Daniel left corporate life and
14:28
became an entrepreneur if you're an
14:29
entrepreneur a solopreneur you work for
14:31
yourself let us know how you're doing
14:34
this is this fearful for you have you
14:37
ever been in corporate life before and
14:38
now you're um by on purpose or maybe not
14:42
on purpose now an entrepreneur I used to
14:44
laugh that entrepreneurs um are not
14:47
always entrepreneurs on purpose no they
14:49
sort of landed there right and and um
14:52
and it's it's hard so if you're if it's
14:54
hard for you let us know what you're
14:56
doing um what would you tell somebody
15:01
right now who's watching this show
15:04
whether it's Replay live whenever you're
15:05
watching this what would you tell them
15:07
right now to get off the
15:08
dime and and start following their
15:12
dream when you believe in yourself other
15:15
people will believe in you too and I
15:17
believe that in those situations where
15:19
you're wondering whether or not to
15:21
pursue that business pursue that
15:24
promotion pursue whatever goal that
15:26
you're trying to achieve you never want
15:28
to look back and wonder what if you
15:31
never want to do that so at least try
15:35
before you even give up on
15:36
yourself good good good answer um I'm
15:40
sure our our viewers are wondering how
15:42
do they follow you so we're going to
15:44
give them some information you can watch
15:46
us again and again and again you don't
15:48
have to write it down but if you want to
15:49
you can go visit Danielle at her website
15:51
at Daniel Cobo kobo.com you can visit
15:55
Danielle on LinkedIn at T Daniel Cobo
15:58
you can go to her YouTube channel to the
16:01
Unstoppable grit podcast and I want to
16:03
talk about the podcast before we get off
16:06
um you can also uh visit you on
16:08
Instagram and Facebook at the Daniel
16:11
Cobo and also on Tik Tok and Twitter
16:14
without the the Danielle coobo as I like
16:17
to say you are everywhere now we didn't
16:20
talk about your podcast but let's talk a
16:23
little bit about the podcast is the
16:24
podcast uh an extension of the book did
16:27
the did the podcast come first and then
16:30
the book or did the book come first and
16:31
then the podcast podcast came first so
16:33
it started off as dream job with
16:35
Danielle Cobo podcast and then when I
16:37
released the book I rebranded the
16:39
podcast to Unstoppable grit podcast
16:42
because it's all about how could you
16:44
thrive in all areas of your life how
16:46
could you build a career in life that
16:48
you love and that's where that
16:49
Unstoppable grit comes from and so the
16:52
podcast has 158 episodes it's rated the
16:55
top 5%
16:57
globally and um I and I've I've had
17:00
amazing guests on the podcast and so I
17:02
had that before writing the book but the
17:04
podcast inspired the book okay so they
17:06
can find that everywhere that podcast
17:08
can be listened to Spotify Apple you
17:10
name it just go put that into the search
17:12
Unstoppable grit podcast it will show up
17:17
any last minute thoughts for our
17:19
audience that you would like to
17:21
share I would say if you're thinking
17:24
about it do it don't let anything stop
17:27
you believe in yourself
17:29
try it you never want to live your life
17:30
regretting and wondering what if because
17:33
as long if you pursue your goal and
