Is there a right way to being authentically you
0:05
We talk about this and more with Image Advisor Lauren Solomon on this episode of The Little
0:11
White Lie. Hello everyone, Karen Glasser here and I am delighted that you're joining us today
0:16
If you're here on replay, welcome. Go ahead and make a comment down below and we'll continue the conversation
0:22
If you're here live, we're even more excited. Make sure you share it out to your network
0:26
Click that little share button and send it out and bring your network in. I'm going to do the reveal, but as I was just laughing with my guest today
0:34
it's kind of hard to actually do a reveal when the entire hair is gray at this point
0:38
but here we go. Here's my reveal. This is my little white lie, and we're going to be talking
0:45
with our guest today about her little white lie, but in the meantime, if you would like to
0:49
hashtag us out, hashtag LWL, that stands for little white lie, and make sure to share it
0:58
Share it. Share it. So the question today is, is there a right way to being authentically you
1:04
And our guest today is Lauren Solomon. Lauren has lived, and these are actually her right, the words that she sent to me, and I have to agree with her
1:11
She has led a charmed life. I love that. Across the globe amidst amazing family and friends
1:18
That foundation has empowered her to walk away from a successful corporate career into a world that married her talents and her passions to help others show up in the world
1:27
to attract and achieve all that they desire and deserve. And since then, the opportunities, the ups and the downs have been many
1:35
and every one of them has led her to being where she is today. Often painful, overwhelmingly grateful
1:42
So without further ado, I introduce to you my special guest, Lauren Solomon
1:47
Hello there, Lauren. Hello, Karen. How are you today? I'm so happy you're here
1:53
I'm great. Thank you. It started out as a rainy day. The sun is shining and I'm doing great
2:00
So grateful to be here with you. Well, I'm really happy that you're here and you're actually a return visitor
2:05
You've been here on the show a couple of times and there's a reason for that. First of all, I absolutely adore you
2:10
And what you have to say is so important because the whole story and the whole conversation behind the little white lie started with the image and started with what we look like and what what the world sees when they see us
2:22
But before we jump into the actual topic today, I'd like to ask you, what is your little white lie
2:28
And I know that when we first talked about this, you told me something about not really having as many lies as you used to
2:35
I think so. I think as I've gotten older, I have just felt freer
2:41
And I have to admit that the hair has been a huge part of it
2:45
just not having to run and chase after my little skunk has really opened up my world
2:52
But I definitely have fewer lies and am a lot more authentic in terms of just saying what I mean
3:01
with lots of love and really deep regard for whoever's listening. But I think there is just a time in your life where you come clean
3:11
Well, I and that's why this question is so important today that we're going to be talking about being authentic
3:16
And what does that really mean? What is authentic really mean? When we last were on an interview together, your hair was not that color and my hair was not this color
3:23
Right. But look at us now. And we went about it in different ways
3:28
So, first of all, what does authentic mean when we say, you know, being authentic? What does that mean? For me, it means being able to have a sense of freedom in yourself
3:39
just to have a kind of standard of joy and not have to think twice about who and how you are
3:50
So it doesn't mean you don't think twice about do I wear that, don't I wear that
3:54
but it means that when you actually look at yourself in the mirror
3:58
there is a sense of acceptance and an absolute willingness to go out and show that to the world
4:04
I really like that. And so, I mean, would you say that there's a wrong way
4:10
and a right way to be authentic? You know as an example we did this differently So what is Which I love And let talk about that for a second because I think what we did and how we did it goes to our own levels of authenticity I mean you were far braver than I in the process
4:28
So equally inspired, the fact that you did it, you know, month by month, half inch by
4:34
half inch, reveal by reveal, and actually grew a following around it
4:40
You know, that's pretty big. I on the other hand knew that I needed to do it. I wanted to do it
4:46
I had a mental breakdown around it. I mean literally the day I made the hardcore decision
4:52
I had been working toward it, but the day I made the hardcore decision. It was because I needed to go on camera
4:57
My stylist had gotten sick during the night I was sitting in his chair waiting to get my color done and he couldn't show
5:04
And what was I going to do and then I could feel the tears streaming down my face and I thought
5:11
okay this is stupid this is really stupid this is my business I am the expert here I should be able
5:18
to figure this one out I went for a blow dry we powdered in the skunk I went on camera I only had
5:24
little bits of brown powder showing on my forehead and the next day I said we're done with this I'm
5:32
not I'm just not doing it anymore how do we get it out so I actually went through the process of
5:38
stripping the color out of my hair because I've been coloring my hair since I was about 23
5:44
Do the math. That's a long time ago. And I loved it. And every time I would talk to my stylist
5:50
about, oh, you know, I'm thinking I should do this. Like I should be more authentic. I should
5:55
be more natural. And they would say, wait a minute, if you can look this great brunette
6:00
Why would you do it? And I get it. I totally get that. Everybody I meet who says, oh, my God, you actually did that
6:09
And I'm sure you get this, too. And they say, I can't like I just won't look good
6:14
And I had that same story because my mom is white haired, silver, white haired
6:19
But she has this porcelain skin and blue green eyes. And it all made sense
6:24
My dad, on the other hand, and I have the same coloring, which is more olive tone skin, greener eyes
6:30
And it always felt like the gray was more dishwater. Right. So it just didn't feel like it would be pretty until I just gave up on everything and said, we're going to do it
6:41
So we went through a process. It took a few months because you don't want your hair to fall out of your head
6:46
But once we got the color out and had enough time for the natural hair to grow in
6:51
And then so mine is totally different than yours. I know. Yeah, it's true
6:58
And it's and it's still really fun and it's working for me. And I think that's, you know, that's the part of authenticity that says you have to take the steps to do what works for you
7:09
Exactly. I can't tell you how many people I have had say to me, well, I don't think I'm ready to color my hair or I I don't I want to have plastic surgery or
7:19
And the message here is not that you should or you shouldn't
7:23
The message is, is that you should, I believe that the decision should be yours, not what somebody else is telling you to do
7:31
And you're an image advisor. So talk about that, right? Well, I do talk to people about it all the time
7:37
And I think it's more about making a decision. It's make it your decision
7:43
So you can get all the input you want. You can shop it all you want
7:48
you're going to get a million inputs, a million opinions. But even for me, yes, my clients look at me and say, oh, my God, I wish I could do that
7:57
And I can tell them how they can do it or not
8:00
But the bottom line is you should make a decision and not make it by default
8:07
It's not because you've always colored your hair or it's not because you've always worn stretchy pants or it's not because you've always worn green
8:15
Right. Right. Make your decision right for you and then move forward with it
8:21
That's going to be your most authentic position. Absolutely. And what do you feel about the word confidence
8:26
Do you think that that plays into the whole authenticity thing when somebody is confident
8:31
I think they feed each other I think confidence feeds that willingness to be authentic And knowing that like I said when you look in the mirror knowing that you are being your very best you that you are truly who you are in the world that feeds the confidence factor
8:48
So your tagline is where style, where your style and your substance meet
8:53
Where did that come up? Where did you get that from? when I was rebranding I really I went through a great exercise with my with my branding expert
9:06
who's just amazing um if anybody's looking for a branding expert I don't mind giving him a
9:11
shameless plug but Chris Collins in Santa Monica um I think it's uh branddesigner.com is his website
9:20
so I recommend him highly and he took me through an exercise and granted this is an exercise I do
9:25
with my own clients, but having it done for you, you need to hire the experts to do what they do
9:30
Right, right. And so ultimately, my two words were style and substance, they kept coming back up
9:36
And I said, you can't have one without the other. And for all the years that I've been in the
9:42
business, people would say that style and substance are contradictory. And I don't believe that I
9:49
don't believe that style is superficial. And I don't believe that substance is the end all and
9:54
be all because you can be as substance filled as you choose study your heart out for all your years
10:01
and have so much good content but if your style doesn't reflect that content then nobody's going
10:07
to listen to you so who cares right it's a nice marriage of both you have to have both yeah i think
10:12
so what is something that people don't know about you i grew up next yeah my next next so i grew up around horses and dogs and then have gone through
10:28
uh years and years of city living and city travel and just you know a lot airplane lifestyle
10:36
where animals would have to learn to walk and feed themselves if they were going to be a part
10:41
of my life. So it wouldn't be fair to them. But I feel like my next next is going to involve a
10:49
horse rescue and there will be a few dogs. And I'll be wearing a lot more Carhartt than I am
10:54
Neiman Marcus. But I'm pretty sure there's that in my future. But that'll be the authentic you
11:01
I mean, that is going to be what your next next is going to be. I'd love for you to share a tip
11:06
with our viewers and, you know, you had shared with me what you felt is something that if viewers
11:16
were just to do this one thing, it would push them to the next level. So what is that
11:21
Okay, so I'm going to guess at what I told you and then you're going to tell me if it's the
11:25
right thing. I'm going to say if you do what makes you happy, if you actually do something
11:32
every day that gives you pure joy, then you will make different decisions about how you show up
11:38
for the rest of your life. Just one little thing. And this, I read the book, Make Your Bed. It's
11:46
written by an admiral whose name, I can't recall his last name. It's a little book. It's not a
11:51
teeny teeny, but like one of those midsize little books. But it's called First Make Your Bed. And he
11:57
talks about the importance of starting your day by doing something that gives you a sense of worth
12:03
accomplishment. And I was always one of those people who would kind of slide out from under
12:08
the covers and pull the covers up with me and just make the bed as I got out of it. So it would be
12:13
made so that I could say if I had no other accomplishments in the course of the day
12:18
at least I got into a made bed at night and I wasn't making it as I was getting back into it
12:22
something like that, right? Something that just makes you laugh at yourself
12:26
makes you feel good, gives you a sense of joy. You know, maybe it's using your favorite mug
12:33
instead of saving it for special occasions. Maybe it's wearing the jewelry
12:38
that you've been saving for special occasions. And I've written articles on things like this
12:43
where, you know, use that china, wear the jewelry, go to the beautiful restaurant
12:49
Do what brings you joy in the moment so that you can make better decisions about being your best self your most authentic self all the time And they all connect It a spiral
13:02
There's no one or the other. So living into being who you really know you can be in the world, those decisions are going
13:10
to guide you. Well, you know, the little white lie is all about the lies that we tell ourselves as we
13:17
get older. And it doesn't matter what age you're getting older, whether it's 30 getting older to 31 or 50 getting older to 51
13:25
Do you feel that the times they are changing as I watch television, as I watch as I read magazines that which there are still magazines out there
13:35
As I look at things online, I am seeing older women with gray, white hair walking the runway in print ads
13:45
Is this just a blip or do you think that times are changing
13:50
I'm going to say I want to believe times are changing. I want to believe that these are the new new and that these are our reality going forward and that they're only they're only going to become more
14:05
Because next to that authenticity and that real being, there are so many other things going on in our time that need attention, that need addressing
14:17
And at the same time, we've gone so casual, we've become so informal that we no longer hold in respect a lot of the things that we perhaps want to
14:29
And I believe that by showing up as our best, by really giving ourselves that basis as a decision making, that's where all these changes have come from
14:40
That people stood up and said, I don't get to be my best unless we see people like me in the magazines
14:47
I don't get to be my best unless my daughter sees people like her in the magazines or on the runway or in the street
14:55
yeah and I have to admit going gray is easier when gray is on fashion trend
15:01
because because walking outside now and seeing 20-somethings and 30-somethings who are putting
15:08
it into their hair looking at me or you and saying oh my god how'd you do that how'd you do that I
15:14
know it and I take that as a compliment and I take that as maybe that's where I think I take
15:20
it as a sign that maybe times are changing a little bit that that women are looking at each
15:25
other and not judging immediately saying, Oh, you look old or what's wrong with you. Now we're
15:31
hearing, how did you do that? I want to look just like you. When was the last time you heard a 20
15:35
something tell a 60 something? I want to be just like you. That's pretty cool. It is cool. Or you're
15:41
in the shoe department and you're trying on the same shoes as the 20 something, or you get in the
15:46
car with, you know, somebody's daughter and you guys like the same music. So it's a unifier
15:53
Right. There's kind of a democratization of things. So there are certain aspects of life right now, I think, are unifying the generations
16:02
And we want to focus on those because it definitely helps communication overall
