lifestyle comm your one-stop shop for
0:10

0:14
welcome image and brand consultant Susan
0:17
Jacobs to the show and we talk about
0:18
loving life and making a difference and
0:21
we have a phenomenal show for you today
0:25
this is one year in the making we
0:27
actually booked the show one year ago
0:29
almost exactly and finally finally we
0:33
finally have Susan Jacobs on the show
0:35
but before we go into that it's time for
0:38
the super Boomer pic of the week and
0:40
today I am picking the echo dot and the
0:44
reason why I'm picking the echo dot I'm
0:46
holding mine I have one is because I
0:48
take this with me
0:50
everywhere I go I'm going to an event
0:52
tomorrow I'm getting on a train and I'm
0:53
going up north and I'm going to an event
0:55
in my room I want to have music I want
0:58
to have meditation I want to have books
0:59
read to me so I'm taking my echo if you
1:02
want to find out about the echo and how
1:04
you can pick up one in the super boomer
1:06
lifestyle comm put in the comments echo
1:10
and I'll make sure to message you how
1:12
you can go pick up one of yours alright
1:15
alright so we are now at that point
1:18
where I get to bring in my guests my
1:22
amazing guest so before I do that I want
1:24
to introduce you to her because she's
1:26
pretty pretty special when I asked Susan
1:29
to send me some information about
1:31
herself this is what she said and a lot
1:33
of people say oh you know I've done this
1:34
and I've done that this is what Susan
1:36
said I'm committed to my clients as a
1:39
wardrobe expert and image coach
1:41
I'm loving my life in my 60th decade and
1:44
she tells me that she's passionate about
1:47
championing women to show up and stand
1:49
in their full brilliance and truly
1:51
believes that we are all better together
1:54
I believe that too and that's why Susan
1:57
is joining us in the show right now
1:59
Susan Jacobs how are you today hi thank
2:02
you so much for being here thanks for
2:05
that intro oh my god
2:07
I mean it I mean it you know it's
2:08
interesting when you ask people to send
2:10
a bio or some bullet points about who
2:13
they are normally they talk about things
2:15
that they've done you didn't do that you
2:18
talk about who you are which is so
2:20
amazing and we're gonna get into that
2:22
we're gonna get into that in the
2:23
conversation but what I love to do at
2:26
the very beginning of the show is I like
2:27
to ask everyone to describe a super
2:30
boomer so you know in my case the way I
2:33
describe a super boomer is that we're
2:36
not defined by our age we're defined by
2:38
how we show up in life
2:41
Susan how do you describe a super boomer
2:44
I love that how we show up in life I
2:47
think that a super boomer is somebody
2:51
who is fabulous because they are saying
2:54
yes to things they're very aware that
2:58
every experience we have is going to add
3:01
to our memories and why not I believe
3:05
that a super boomer is also someone who
3:08
is open to learning and is relevant and
3:11
wants to stay relevant because there's
3:13
so much more out there so I feel like
3:16
that's what I think I love that that's a
3:20
great definition hey you guys how do you
3:23
describe a super boomer put in the
3:24
comments I'd love to hear what you think
3:27
a super boomer is hey Joey says hi Susan
3:30
hi Joey I'm so glad you're here so let
3:35
us grow and by the way if you're online
3:37
we love you and make comments and we'll
3:40
come and respond to your comments if
3:41
you're on replay we love you just as
3:43
much as you were in life make your
3:45
comments will come and respond and of
3:46
course shamelessly we ask you to share
3:49
share share push that button we know you
3:50
want to we will wait no we're not we're
3:53
not gonna wait we're gonna keep on going
3:55
all right so today we're talking about
3:58
loving life and making a difference
4:00
first of all I have to tell you I love
4:02
this topic I love the idea of loving
4:04
life and I definitely love life and I
4:07
love the fact of really making a
4:09
difference but let's talk about loving
4:10
life first okay so Susan when when I say
4:13
loving life and when you say loving life
4:14
what does that mean to you exactly I I
4:17
guess I feel very and I know
4:19
sounds cliche blessed and fortunate to
4:22
be here to help the experiences to have
4:25
more of the same to wake up every day
4:28
potential impossibility
4:30
um I have a great network of people
4:33
around me and I feel that that's
4:36
something that as you get older you
4:39
really appreciate because we fall back
4:41
on those people a lot of times when you
4:45
know as a super boomer things happen um
4:47
loving life I kind of think I love it
4:51
too much sometimes my physicality lets
4:54
me know smarten up soon you are not 40
4:57
but you know like you just have to keep
4:59
going and say listen here we're here for
5:02
a reason it's to live our life that's
5:04
absolutely if you're just tuning in
5:06
right now we're talking to a brand and
5:09
style consultant Susan Jacobs and we're
5:12
talking about loving life and making a
5:14
difference one of the things that you
5:16
always talk about is that you see
5:17
potential in people right but how does
5:20
that how does that manifest in your life
5:22
and what does that make you want to do
5:24
when you see the potential in people oh
5:26
boy well it's it's a great asset when I
5:31
was a teacher and in my role as an image
5:33
and Wardrobe coach but I I guess I don't
5:36
limit it limit it to my clients I see it
5:40
you know in everywhere and everyone and
5:43
I feel like you know so many people
5:44
don't see their own potential and I know
5:47
the value and the benefit of people who
5:51
see your potential and kind of help you
5:53
and tweak you through it because on the
5:56
other side of that again is such
5:59
newfound freedom sure so how do you help
6:02
them I mean I mean I obviously as a as a
6:05
brand stylist and you you make them you
6:09
help them be their beautiful self that
6:11
they already were but you help them
6:13
bring that out in them but I don't think
6:15
you're talking about just clothing when
6:17
you say you see their potential so how
6:19
do how do you help them what do you do
6:20
how do you help them
6:21
I think paying attention to people and I
6:24
think active listening is important I
6:26
feel um main bulk don't feel heard they
6:31
feel in
6:32
simple or irrelevant and I think I've
6:35
learned that the most important thing we
6:37
can do at any age really is to give
6:40
people our time so they know that we
6:42
hear them we care it builds trust and
6:45
they walk away feeling like well that
6:47
was kind of cool
6:49
maybe I am oh okay and they are and they
6:52
are exactly that so your journey is is
6:55
quite the interesting one your journey
6:57
is quite the interesting one and the
6:58
reason why I said this was a year in the
7:00
making is that prior to that I think
7:03
almost a year before that you went on a
7:05
probably the trip of a lifetime that you
7:07
didn't know was gonna be the trip of a
7:08
lifetime and it literally changed your
7:10
world tell us what it did there's so
7:15
much that built up to that though my
7:17
daughter has lived and worked in Africa
7:20
in South Sudan and in Kenya for nine
7:22
years
7:23
my had never traveled there and I think
7:26
I know why and I did it know why before
7:30
but a lot of things so I go back to an
7:32
awareness and listening and trusting
7:34
your gut and I feel what shifted for me
7:39
in Africa in my experience in Nairobi
7:42
was the way through different phases of
7:45
my life I mean my dad helped me listen I
7:49
listened to him when he said to me stop
7:51
trying to be someone you're not
7:53
you're not finding the way you are you
7:56
know you aren't your sister you are good
7:58
enough so I listened and it was like oh
8:01
my gosh you know so that was a
8:03
liberating I love that Susan cuz how
8:07
many of us need to hear those words
8:08
right we enough yes and then you know
8:14
fast forward I was married and had all
8:17
you know the life the kids and all of
8:18
this and then there's that tugging at my
8:22
myself again and I'm thinking like you
8:24
know gut go away I don't want to hear
8:25
what you're saying but had I been
8:27
listening probably wouldn't have Mayor
8:30
been married to that person not so I can
8:34
not that there was nothing wrong it was
8:36
just shouldn't have happened but what
8:38
happened was great it's again a learning
8:40
experience and
8:41
my two girls so when you trust your gut
8:44
you admit what you don't want to admit
8:46
you do the tough thing and you just go
8:49
it alone and what happened it was like
8:52
liberating it was and then blended up in
8:56
Africa yes so all of these times in my
9:01
life I think you know I've been aware of
9:03
changing careers at in my 50s was he
9:07
much leaving teaching but people were
9:10
telling me I was paying attention they
9:12
say sue you need to do this so business
9:14
of it up I listen in my business if I
9:16
didn't I wouldn't have a business so
9:19
caring to get to Africa I think it needs
9:21
to back up some things started to happen
9:23
in my own life my husband was ill my mum
9:28
you know hero that she is she's still
9:31
alive but her awareness is not there
9:33
really it forces you to slow down and
9:39
look at it differently yes and what is
9:41
important so in my consultancy what I
9:46
had been focused on before seemed to be
9:49
less important and what was more
9:50
important for the women and men that I
9:52
worked with was you know how did they
9:54
feel how did they want to come and they
9:58
want to be perceived what is it that
10:00
they want to be remembered as done so
10:04
that positioned me that happened just
10:05
before we went and I will tell you um I
10:10
think my trip from the second I landed
10:13
in the airport I was it took me to my
10:17
knees everything that happened I was
10:20
acutely aware of everything like every
10:24
sound the difference and you talk about
10:28
that you don't know being aware you talk
10:31
about listening and paying attention and
10:34
then changed you because you became
10:37
aware because there is so there's so
10:41
much richness to when you can get out of
10:45
yourself and fully be engaged what's
10:48
happening and be aware and notice things
10:50
and notice that bug and notice that hug
10:52
that felt like the
10:54
was ND i'm and so we have a comment
10:59
comment phillips susan treats people
11:01
with respect for so much encouragement
11:05
that's so good we thank you i appreciate
11:10
that and you know this doesn't mean that
11:12
we're all perfect cuz that isn't it I
11:14
feel like I'm constantly learning and
11:17
sometimes I'm saying what are you doing
11:18
smarten up you know you have to stay
11:20
stay the track and make sure that you
11:22
don't get discouraged and you do not go
11:25
off the rails come back to your values
11:27
right and they need people like you they
11:29
need people like you who are gonna help
11:32
keep them on track and gonna help them
11:33
open their minds to something that maybe
11:35
they just weren't ready for right yes
11:39
your mentor you become a mentor that way
11:41
that is true and I do want to say this
11:44
as much as they need me and they hire me
11:46
for a reason
11:47
I learn from every single one of these
11:50
women and I am so grateful for that
11:54
every day it's just like it's a big gift
11:57
it's a constant gift one of the things I
12:00
remember is when you came back you were
12:02
doing a shoe box thing and we I know I
12:07
participated I just thought it was
12:10
amazing that you were giving back in
12:12
such a great way and it was a small
12:15
thing but a great way and how many how
12:17
many people got involved in this and
12:19
what I remember we put you put
12:21
toiletries and things in people that was
12:23
that was a project I got into it wasn't
12:26
something I initiated but it was a
12:28
London shoebox project and yes it was
12:31
all we got together my friends and I and
12:34
we thought she's bought this and then
12:35
you gather toiletries and these were
12:37
four women who were homeless or in risk
12:40
risk at risk of being homeless and em
12:43
this year so this past year I was able
12:47
to on the other end put all those things
12:49
package them together and actually be
12:52
there when women were coming to receive
12:55
them yeah it was it's just great it's
12:58
yeah you're doing something that's
13:00
bigger than yourself and I don't know
13:03
about you I mean we talked about this
13:04
before the show that I think it's that
13:06
we're getting older not
13:07
terms of like we're dying older but
13:10
we're mature we as we get older we have
13:13
more stuff that we have learned from we
13:15
failed our way to success and so we look
13:18
at things differently and we want to do
13:20
things I believe that are bigger than
13:22
ourselves I don't think that you're you
13:24
and I are alone in this I think that
13:26
more and more people are looking at the
13:28
bigger picture looking at the bigger
13:30
world and saying where can I make a
13:32
difference and that's where the topic of
13:34
this show came and I'm curious too my
13:37
guess to my viewers and to our viewers
13:40
how are you making a difference
13:42
how are you shining your light into the
13:46
world maybe it's your community right
13:48
outside your door maybe it's all the way
13:50
across the world in Africa or maybe it's
13:53
across the country you know Susan you're
13:55
in you're in Canada I'm over here in
13:57
Southern California how cool is is that
13:59
we can connect with wait you know the of
14:02
you have a tagline I love your tagline
14:03
and I know that that it comes from
14:05
somewhere you say because confidence is
14:08
always in style I love that it's so true
14:10
right it is simple but it's true I love
14:14
it too it's kind of my story right I
14:17
know that style would have any relevance
14:19
when this came to be for me but it's
14:22
it's actually it is true and I love it
14:24
it still exists it's still relevant in
14:26
my business today and Allison says there
14:29
are so many distractions in life being
14:31
aware of that and coming back to
14:32
honoring your values is so important yay
14:35
that's awesome
14:37
Allison thank you so many many great
14:40
comments and so many great you know
14:43
views that are that are coming up here
14:44
you know you one of the things that is
14:46
so funny about you okay men you dress
14:51
man you make you help them be their best
14:53
self but you told me you dislike trying
14:56
on clothes how does that work leave miss
14:58
Susan you're sharing that if okay I'm
15:05
learning to be you know the whole slow
15:08
down thing in awareness but also in like
15:11
in real time when I have time to shop is
15:15
limited so I
15:19
I will beat this store and I really I I
15:22
I'm pretty quick I bought something I
15:24
know I wanted I need to try it on
15:26
because I'm short you know I have to see
15:27
how it fits I have been known I often
15:30
will come over the change room much to
15:32
the chagrin of the scale mazhab that
15:35
know me very well and see me doing what
15:38
I do and I will have on maybe my jeans
15:40
down around my ankles and a dress on but
15:43
I'll say how does it look can you just
15:46
take off your jeans
15:51
I'm very decisive I love this I love
15:56
good Susan I love this on so many levels
16:00
many levels back in the day and talk
16:02
about you know as you get older and
16:04
things happen and you get a different
16:05
perspective back of the day 25 years ago
16:08
I was a Bloomingdale's shopper I went
16:10
the Bloomingdale's I had my personal
16:12
shopper and that woman would call me and
16:14
say I have clothes for you and I'd go
16:15
running now I you couldn't catch me dead
16:19
in a shopping mall in a department store
16:21
in a store for that may I let my fingers
16:23
do the walking on online I just I hate
16:28
it and so I love it that we are alike
16:30
that way I just hate it I would do what
16:32
you did
16:33
pants around the ankles how does this
16:34
look but I do love to shop for women but
16:40
yeah and I like to browse I do like to
16:42
browse housewares I think because I do
16:44
it all the time right
16:45
you want it is like oh my goodness but I
16:47
do i do humor and feel sales stuff and I
16:49
say okay this is for you take the time
16:53
there's something can I go back to
16:55
something you can build Mac you can go
16:57
forward yeah okay so back to certainly
17:00
back to what you said about you think
17:02
that we're not alone I really realize
17:05
that many many people want to give back
17:09
they often don't know how to do that
17:12
they don't know where to start they
17:14
don't know what the processes are so and
17:17
Allison is on this call I'm not sure who
17:19
else is but she and I have done events
17:23
together where we've brought other
17:25
people in so that they can they want to
17:28
be part of that community and it's such
17:30
a relief for them to say okay this is
17:32
great
17:33
and I do believe in the greater good of
17:36
people and again hashtag better together
17:39
we are better together I mean yeah
17:44
exactly I love the theme that I think
17:46
runs through the shows that you do the
17:49
shows that I do the shows that Joey
17:50
Garrity does carry that we are better
17:53
together than women together you know we
17:55
rise together if in your quest to
17:58
support women is there a particular tip
18:01
that you would like to share oh boy I I
18:07
see four women I see a lot of women you
18:09
know um don't say don't let your first
18:13
gut instinct be to say no say I'll
18:16
consider it maybe that sounds
18:20
interesting because we need I can just
18:24
say from my own experiences now if
18:26
someone said to me sue I want you to
18:28
consider rappelling off of my fire
18:32
signal so I'm just saying something that
18:35
out of your comfort zone not completely
18:37
out of your wheelhouse
18:38
um because there that's where you get to
18:42
feel confident and proud of yourself
18:43
because I've done it I nailed it and I
18:46
was terrified so I feel like we need to
18:48
embrace saying yes and trust your gut
18:53
right we talked about trust you're good
18:55
how does it feel you know if it doesn't
18:58
make you feel nauseous
19:01
you'll excited yeah feel like I've got
19:04
this so you know do you trust your gut I
19:07
think you do right yeah and I'm learning
19:09
I listen all the time and I think too
19:12
for people that you know maybe need to
19:14
know what is your strategy what do you
19:17
need to do for yourself when you feel
19:19
yourself you know kind of going off the
19:22
rails and I think that's good to know it
19:25
can be quite simple you know like but
19:27
but whatever that is do it because if it
19:30
does get you back centered I know you
19:32
practice journaling and meditation
19:35
whatever it is right yeah whatever that
19:38
is
19:39
that helps you I say do it if it
19:42
breathing do it if it's listening to
19:44
music do it whatever it is need to bring
19:47
you back to you I am sure we have people
19:50
out there wondering how they can get in
19:51
touch with you you do some amazing
19:53
online courses and I I'm guessing that
19:57
people might want to you know take a
19:59
look at that and the best way they can
20:00
do it they can actually go to your
20:02
website 2ww personal style
20:06
consulting.com you're also on Facebook
20:10
and they can get you over there to
20:12
either Facebook amor FB comm personal
20:15
style image and wardrobe consulting and
20:19
of course because you're cool and you
20:22
know what hot out there you're on
20:23
Instagram mile consulting and then on
20:28
Twitter it's a little bit different
20:29
because I think you probably had this a
20:30
long time ago and that is sue and the
20:32
city I love that at sue in the city and
20:34
I surprised this because I want you to
20:36
go follow her go follow her on Twitter
20:38
if that's where you play then go follow
20:40
her on Twitter if you're on Instagram go
20:41
follow her on Instagram and of course
20:43
Facebook we're at Facebook live right
20:45
now make sure you can go look at her
20:47
page she's got so many great things and
20:49
I would be remiss if I did not tell
20:51
people that every Tuesday who knew an
20:54
amazing live whatever like that the life
20:58
is at 6:00 Eastern Standard Time so
21:00
where you are at 3:00 p.m. but those are
21:02
I I know their value packed I love doing
21:05
them people benefit and I'm going to
21:07
continue to do that and they're great
21:10
and you owe it you you put you tend to
21:11
pick a topic and then you dive deep on
21:14
it and you're you're just you're very
21:15
natural about it you sit there and you
21:17
have your sometimes you have clothing
21:18
you know so it's great if you guys just
21:21
need something just to maybe up your
21:24
game or a little nugget of something
21:25
maybe you didn't think about you want to
21:27
tune into Susan's shows on Tuesday Susan
21:31
I'm so appreciate you is there anything
21:33
that that we that we should be touching
21:35
on that you want to make sure that you
21:38
get your message out there before we say
21:40
goodbye to everyone the show is just
21:42
zipping by now ah let me think I feel
21:45
like women stand in their own way you
21:48
know maybe men do too but I see more
21:50
women
21:51
and I believe that it's so valuable to
21:56
reflect take the time for yourself yeah
21:59
be by yourself and be comfortable with
22:02
yourself because I see many women in my
22:05
consultancy that guys they fear that and
22:08
I understand that I used to be there but
22:12
when you get in touch with who you are
22:13
and like what you need you can really
22:16
live that life that was intended for you
22:18
and then everyone else can benefit from
22:21
your gifts I love that I love that Susan
22:24
I want to thank you no it's late over
22:26
there you probably go have to have
22:27
dinner right now or getting ready or
22:30
maybe you have to make dinner I don't
22:31
know no no no my husband's doing I love
22:34
it oh my gosh I love your husband and I
22:39
want to thank you I'm gonna drop you in
22:40
the greenroom stick around for a few
22:43
minutes just so appreciate you thank you
22:45
for joining us today Karen my pleasure
22:48
so Susan's awesome right she's totally
22:51
awesome and so in alignment with this
22:54
whole idea of that we are powerful that
22:57
we are we can do anything we want let's
22:59
just kick that whole age thing to the
23:03
curb and as I like to do every week I
23:05
have my super boomer moment and that's
23:07
where I highlight something that I
23:09
actually listen to more than I might
23:12
have listened to something else it
23:13
struck a chord with me and that super
23:16
boomer moment has to do with listening
23:18
and being aware you know before the show
23:21
when I was talking to Susan we were
23:23
talking about the topic and what we were
23:25
gonna do and she was very adamant that
23:27
we really bring in the fact that
23:29
listening and being aware is a game
23:32
changer and you know you get Susan
23:33
you're right it absolutely is that when
23:35
we start paying attention when we really
23:38
start paying attention there is nothing
23:41
that we can't aspire to and there is
23:45
nothing that we can't do as women and as
23:48
men and as especially super boomers so I
23:51
just delighted delighted that that Susan
23:55
taught me that today and I'm going to
23:57
put that on my list of things that I
23:59
need to remember is to be aware and to
24:01
listen I also want to remind you guys
24:04
we're on
24:05
Media super boomer lifestyle is on
24:06
social media you can check us out on
24:08
Facebook at the super boomer lifestyle
24:12
which is right on Facebook you can also
24:14
check us out on Instagram and that is
24:17
the super boomer lifestyle and then on
24:20
Twitter because you can't have that long
24:22
of a word on Twitter so we had to cut it
24:24
down a little bit it's super boomer life
24:27
that's how you know it's us because it
24:29
has a super boomer in it
24:30
alrighty we know that you have a choice
24:33
as to where you spend your time and I
24:35

24:40

24:41

24:47
