here and welcome to the author Spotlight
0:03
make sure you say hi in the comments and
0:05
tell us where you are watching from
0:07
today I am talking with the amazing
0:09
Heather Hansen O'Neal she is an
0:12
international keynote speaker behavioral
0:14
expert author of find your fire teams on
0:18
fire and the co-author of the new Amazon
0:20
bestseller where's the office I love
0:23
that name Heather is also a two-time
0:25
tedx speaker and the host of the very
0:28
popular podcast from Fear to Fire and
0:31
she is here with us today welcome to the
0:34
show thank you Karen it is always a
0:37
pleasure to have some time talking with
0:38
you
0:39
I've already been chit chatting even
0:41
before we before we got on the show here
0:43
today I am as excited as you are to have
0:45
you on this is a return visit for you so
0:47
cool we're just gonna like Jump Right In
0:50
and talk about your journey and actually
0:52
a little bit of our journey we met over
0:54
10 years ago when things were totally
0:56
different right
0:58
a lot of things have changed in these
1:00
past years and one of the big ones is
1:03
that you wrote your first book right in
1:04
2013 yeah called teams on fire and then
1:08
your second in 2020 find your fire at
1:11
40.
1:13
um yeah find your fire at 40 was
1:14
actually first the other way around
1:16
there you go yeah I'm sorry oh well
1:19
there you go okay well so for those of
1:22
you who are I just got schooled uh-oh oh
1:24
no I don't mean
1:27
um so that means what if I made you if
1:29
we made it you know in 2020 that was
1:31
fine you fired 40 that would make you a
1:33
whole lot younger than you are right
1:34
yeah exactly I wrote the book before I
1:37
even knew what 41. there you go
1:39
um and you and you also have your
1:41
podcast which is very very popular the
1:43
fear to Fire and you're a two-time tedx
1:45
speaker the first thing that I want to
1:46
say is how do you do it all I mean
1:49
um one thing at a time no so so I I
1:53
happen to have a little bit of energy so
1:57
which you know Karen and some people may
2:00
find out about me
2:01
um but I love what I do and so
2:04
everything that I do that I choose to do
2:08
energizes me and so it makes it very
2:12
easy to produce a lot and in particular
2:15
I've I've learned through the years as
2:17
well how to laser prioritize my time so
2:20
I get into flow a lot so that I'm still
2:23
able to have some fun and do the the
2:25
lifestyle things that I want along with
2:27
accomplishing all the things that I that
2:29
I'm looking to do so you're a calendar
2:31
girl you schedule your time you time
2:33
book you do all of that stuff well
2:34
that's right that's why you get that
2:36
stuff done because you do that so we're
2:39
going to jump into the the newest of the
2:41
books which were not the other two and
2:43
the wrong dates and all that stuff
2:44
you're the co-author of a book called
2:46
where's the office moving today's
2:48
leaders from what is
2:50
to what can be so
2:53
okay so this is exciting for so many
2:57
different reasons first of all it's very
2:59
different from what you know I'm the
3:01
fire girl right find your prior teams on
3:04
fire from Fear to fire it's all about
3:05
the fire and then I have a book called
3:07
where's the office right so what what is
3:09
that about well that came about
3:12
um in particular because of a friendship
3:14
that I bill over 10 years with an
3:17
amazing man named Will Lewis he came to
3:19
see me speak a while ago and then we
3:22
became friends and he took did some
3:25
coaching and we did some non-profit
3:27
stuff together the interesting thing
3:28
about this is that I didn't meet him
3:30
until he was 83. and he's a he was he's
3:35
constantly looking to stimulate his mind
3:37
to do things to contribute and in our
3:40
friendship I learned about some of the
3:42
different things that he had created
3:45
many years ago and it started to
3:47
resonate with me as the pandemic came
3:50
about how one of the models in
3:54
particular that he had created
3:56
was called Mind space and it moves
3:59
people from physical space to mind space
4:01
for it's a tool and it was so
4:04
appropriate for this this time what
4:08
we're all experiencing that it started
4:10
the conversation hey maybe we should
4:12
write a book and then we went more in
4:14
depth with a lot of the other tools but
4:17
it's really
4:18
um based on the relationship and how the
4:21
information was so incredibly relevant
4:24
for what people are facing right now
4:27
and so I am sure that that people want
4:31
to know right now how this is going to
4:32
happen help them out there and the
4:35
question that I had that I asked you
4:36
even before the show was since you have
4:38
written other books now you're
4:39
co-authoring this book was that process
4:41
different for you unbelievably different
4:44
so okay so I'll answer that one first
4:47
and then I'll go with with how it might
4:50
be able to help people so the the
4:52
process when you're writing your own
4:54
book you have to Mo you have to get
4:56
motivated you have to put your own
4:58
deadlines unless a publisher is doing
5:00
that for you which the first time did
5:02
for me
5:03
um but you can pretty much you can write
5:05
what you want to write right and you've
5:08
got your goals and and then when you
5:10
have a co-author there's this element of
5:14
collaboration that
5:17
can at times be like
5:19
okay well I maybe can't do everything
5:22
that I want but it ends up being
5:24
exponentially better because you know
5:28
you you feed off of each other one idea
5:31
grows and it oh it reminds me of this
5:33
and it reminds me of this and so our
5:35
brainstorming sessions were so Dynamic
5:38
we got so much great content but we were
5:41
also really aligned when it came to the
5:43
editing process too wonderful wonderful
5:46
I just love that and I I know I love in
5:50
a bit in a perfect world to work with
5:51
other people rather than doing stuff all
5:54
by myself or I mean I sit in my office
5:56
all day long so I can totally get into
5:58
that how is this book gonna help people
6:01
so what we've come to realize and what
6:05
we share in the book is that when you
6:08
understand that the that the office
6:10
resides within you meaning the leader
6:12
resides within you you can carry it with
6:15
you wherever you go so whether you are
6:19
leading a team that is virtual or in
6:22
person or some hybrid option if you come
6:26
from a place of truly understanding
6:28
yourself leadership how to communicate
6:31
effectively you can do it from any
6:34
environment and you can do it well with
6:36
the tools that we've provided in the
6:38
book and this was very important as
6:40
people were starting to figure out what
6:42
do I want to do how can I get the most
6:44
from my people how can I support them
6:46
best during this environment so it
6:49
enhances their well-being and the
6:51
overall effectiveness of the
6:53
organization
6:54
if you're just tuning in we're talking
6:56
to Heather Hanson O'Neill and we're
6:57
talking about her newest book where's
6:59
the office you know you want to do it
7:01
get your camera out scan that little QR
7:04
code and go check it out and let us know
7:07
what you think if you are here right now
7:09
live we'd love to hear from you if you
7:11
have a question for Heather put it in
7:13
the comments and we'll make sure that
7:15
she answers the questions for you so you
7:19
wrote This Book
7:22
um
7:23
was it harder to write this book though
7:25
you know did you get writer's block or
7:27
did because you had a partner you guys
7:29
were just like all over the place and it
7:31
was so exciting it was exciting but then
7:34
you know we had the ideas but then we
7:36
had to go back and validate them because
7:38
I mentioned that some of of the concepts
7:40
were from years ago so we did focus
7:43
groups we took it to organizations
7:47
um we had them try it and they you know
7:50
talk about it and get the insights of
7:53
other experts and other business owners
7:55
and it it made the book so much more
7:59
enjoyable to write but also so much more
8:02
worthwhile because it's not just one
8:05
point of view it's been validated it's
8:08
you know you see what works what doesn't
8:10
work and how it would fit in different
8:12
scenarios
8:13
interesting now I know I know um your
8:16
mission because you told me it is your
8:18
mission is to open leaders minds and
8:20
hearts to the possibility within them
8:25
um so I I have this um this skill
8:31
so so I I say it like I I see people I
8:35
am able to one of the things that I love
8:38
to do and I happen to be fairly good at
8:40
is to to what I what I call holding up a
8:43
mirror so I am able to hold up a mirror
8:46
so people see their gifts the things
8:49
that that may be blocking them uh the
8:52
things that make them really special the
8:54
things that they were passionate about
8:55
maybe years ago and have forgotten their
8:58
their flame had dulled and so when um
9:02
when we coach in that scenario it brings
9:05
out the best in them and it reignites
9:09
what they're excited about and it also
9:11
helps to focus the next right steps
9:14
right so we talk about in the book
9:16
Moving from what is to what can be it
9:19
means you have to accept the reality of
9:22
what is which may be outside of your
9:24
control right like can own the the
9:28
changes that you do control own how you
9:31
respond to the changes and it enables
9:34
you to take responsibility for
9:35
everything in your life and it makes
9:37
it's more freeing it's more powerful and
9:40
you're able to to get to where you want
9:42
to go with your vision and your goals it
9:44
sounds like the light bulb then goes up
9:46
right when you shine that that Spotlight
9:49
they like what goes on
9:51
so you obviously are passionate Heather
9:54
about what you do um there is debt with
9:56
no pun intended there is a fire that's
9:58
been lit under you
10:00
um why do you do this I mean you could
10:03
do almost anything you could write books
10:05
all day all day long if you wanted why
10:06
do you work with people why is this so
10:08
important to you
10:11
well all right so I just said this and I
10:16
didn't realize that it would be repeated
10:17
right now but I just said this to
10:19
someone yesterday and it has to do with
10:23
um
10:25
you know when I was dancing I started
10:27
dancing very early when I was 13 I
10:29
started dancing professionally and and
10:32
when I did the thing that I loved best
10:34
about it was making someone feel
10:36
something right like moving someone to
10:38
tears helping them feel something
10:41
powerful within them and that's the same
10:44
that's the same uncle call it high or
10:46
fire that I get and helping someone feel
10:49
something
10:51
realize a block that they may have had
10:54
for for so many years that's keeping
10:57
them from where they want to go or you
10:59
know turning on that light bulb or
11:01
whatever it might be when I see the
11:03
response when I when I help someone feel
11:05
something and when they accomplish
11:06
something that they've always wanted to
11:08
accomplish it makes them jump out of bed
11:10
in the morning Karen how can I hear you
11:13
it's so much better wanting to jump out
11:16
of bed to help people than the stuff
11:17
that keeps us up at night no right yeah
11:20
uh Ed farmer is here and he says this is
11:24
great for leaders and working with both
11:25
themselves and their staff how will this
11:27
work for the worker be in their
11:29
day-to-day great question oh my gosh
11:32
that's a wonderful question Ed thank you
11:34
for for asking it so um
11:37
the realization that the leader resides
11:41
within everyone it's not just leaders so
11:46
so perhaps you know people may get it
11:48
who's a who are they recognize the
11:51
leader within themselves right then a
11:54
lot of the companies that get it they
11:55
get it and they end up buying um a bunch
11:57
and doing like book clubs for other
12:00
people within the organization because
12:02
they realize that when people can start
12:06
to take ownership of how they're
12:08
communicating how they're showing up
12:10
energetically the actions that they're
12:12
taking that that transforms an
12:15
organization and so every person within
12:18
the company or if you're starting a
12:20
company or if we're working alone you
12:22
still interact with other people in your
12:24
family and your communities
12:27
exactly you have the power to make a
12:29
difference in the world when you start
12:31
to use those same leadership strategies
12:33
for yourself I mean that just makes so
12:35
much sense if you're just tuning in I
12:37
see we have people that are coming in we
12:38
are talking to Heather Hanson O'Neill if
12:40
you have a question for her make sure
12:41
you put it in the comments and we will
12:43
throw them up on the screen so what is
12:46
the humanity project
12:49
okay so uh this is another passion point
12:54
for me so
12:56
um it actually started how things often
12:59
do uh in in a time of Darkness
13:03
um when I was experiencing
13:05
um the pain of watching my mom suffer
13:08
and
13:10
um and then losing her and I had this
13:14
um
13:15
this desire to find meaning in it
13:17
because it had hit me so so hard and so
13:21
my in the way that I process things is
13:25
I'm like well I need to go seek
13:27
something right so I made a conscious
13:29
choice to seek Humanity because I was
13:31
looking for meaning and so every day I
13:34
would get up I would walk on the beach
13:35
and I would see Humanity like show me an
13:39
example of someone doing something good
13:41
or can you please again give me some
13:43
Faith again yes and when I did I saw
13:47
over and over and over again the
13:50
examples of people from the kindness of
13:53
their own heart not wanting any
13:54
recognition whatsoever just doing good
13:57
things and it it gave me hope it renewed
14:00
my faith and then what I started to see
14:03
is that people were responding to it so
14:05
I would write about it you know what
14:07
that's me I'm I'm an author too right so
14:10
I'll write about the experiences or
14:12
something that I saw or something that
14:13
somebody did and people really
14:15
responding to it saying that during the
14:18
time of isolation during covid that it
14:21
gave them hope and then I started to
14:23
think I wonder if there's a deeper
14:24
correlation here so I went back to my
14:27
behavioral research roots and I started
14:29
to do some research is there
14:32
is there a correlation in businesses if
14:36
they come from a place of humanity and
14:39
community and doing good for their
14:42
people for their communities for the
14:44
world how does it translate and we found
14:46
out that there's a direct correlation to
14:48
profitability when companies are doing
14:51
good for the sake of doing good and so
14:54
there's a lot of research about it and I
14:56
just have loved it
14:58
you know the first thing that obviously
15:00
comes to mind and we're not going to get
15:01
political we're not going to go in that
15:02
direction at all but it does it does go
15:06
to that point of if we could figure out
15:09
a way to have more Humanity in
15:12
everything that we do in the places that
15:14
we are and the groups that we things
15:16
would be better right I mean remember
15:18
that we are all human and so this is a
15:21
Facebook group that I put up here the
15:23
humanity project what are they going to
15:25
find in there when they go check it out
15:26
well right at this moment we're building
15:28
the community
15:30
um it I have another like the humanity
15:32
of sales keynote and all those different
15:33
things but this project is really people
15:36
community focused so we share things
15:39
that we're doing out in the world we
15:40
share moments that we found of humanity
15:43
and then from that we're breaking off
15:46
into smaller groups to take action on
15:48
some of these things I love that if you
15:51
are tuning in and you're hearing about
15:52
this and you go check this out on
15:54
Facebook let Heather know in the group
15:56
that you heard about it here on the show
15:58
wow definitely I'd love to know that
16:00
that
16:01
people are hearing hearing us talk you
16:03
know of course yeah what is your
16:05
ultimate goal with the humanity project
16:09
I believe that everyone can make a
16:11
difference
16:12
and I found that you know through my
16:15
through my years I've always wanted to
16:17
okay what can I do to make a difference
16:18
and I've come to realize that my power
16:21
isn't in me my power is in helping other
16:24
people realize their power and so um my
16:28
goal is to help people understand what
16:31
they are capable of and that could go
16:33
forth and do it and to take action to
16:35
make a real difference because as
16:36
opposed to me do it what could I do
16:38
versus helping so many other people do
16:41
what they are capable of I'm with you
16:44
Heather I am totally with you on that um
16:46
you but this is not your only passion
16:47
project you also were involved with
16:49
something
16:51
with something yes well what is that L
16:54
Focus stands for leadership for our
16:57
children's ultimate success and every
17:00
keynote that I do a portion of it goes
17:04
back to helping underserved teens learn
17:07
the leadership skills that they need to
17:09
be able to go into business to be able
17:12
to make their own difference things that
17:14
they may not have been had access to and
17:18
um I us I when I work with an
17:20
organization they get the opportunity to
17:23
choose who they want to serve if they
17:26
have a favorite charity or a favorite
17:28
group or a local thing that they are
17:32
interested in then focus it there so
17:35
it's all about how can we make sure that
17:38
we're doing good while we're serving our
17:40
companies oh
17:42
that that's just wonderful now how do
17:45
people find out about this they they can
17:48
find out on my website
17:49
um heatherhanson o'neill.com or you know
17:52
reach out I I do everybody knows that
17:55
when they when they uh work with me that
17:57
we're going to have a conversation like
17:59
this
18:01
exactly like that
18:03
I love that you know so we're talking
18:05
about your your book so I'm going to
18:07
throw up the book for a second again and
18:09
that is where's the office and guys
18:10
while you're there and you're checking
18:11
out these books as we already mentioned
18:13
there are two other books uh that you
18:16
have penned and I'm sure there's other
18:17
books in you that are going to be coming
18:19
out so you want to learn this out for
18:21
sure
18:22
um I wanna also we already said that
18:24
Heather's website is here and you get
18:25
all sorts of interesting information
18:27
over there as well as what we were just
18:29
talking about Heather you have a YouTube
18:30
channel you're everywhere actually we're
18:32
about to show everybody everywhere that
18:34
you are you can go on YouTube and what
18:37
what do they see on YouTube do you do
18:39
videos over there about particularly I
18:40
have a ton of videos but I will tell you
18:43
Karen I you're so much better at this
18:46
than I am you are a whiz at this stuff
18:48
you know you know all this I have not
18:51
given my YouTube channel the love that
18:54
it requires meaning I put a lot of
18:56
content there but then I don't let
18:58
people know about it enough so when I
19:01
will talk afterwards thank you thank you
19:05
you know and really why I'm saying that
19:07
is is that for all of us and all of you
19:09
out there that create a ton of content
19:11
and then don't do anything with it
19:15
that's that just makes me so sad we're
19:18
going to talk about it afterwards
19:20
you can also you can also see Heather on
19:22
her Instagram heather.hanson O'Neill dot
19:25
O'Neill and as I said she's everywhere
19:27
also on LinkedIn I know you're there a
19:29
lot over on that one that is I think
19:31
your your platform of choice and it's
19:33
Heather Hansen O'Neill what a
19:34
coincidence and we were talking about
19:36
the humanity project on Facebook a lot
19:39
of different things I think
19:42
so we got another thank you those are
19:45
terrific suggestions and ideas thank you
19:47
Buck thank you for joining in we
19:48
appreciate it thanks Beth
19:51
Heather
19:53
the thing that you want we're we're
19:55
almost done here and like we just like
19:56
boom boom boom boom boom
19:58
I'm exhausted
20:00
um but is there anything that you want
20:02
to make sure that we bring out right now
20:04
before we say goodbye to everyone I
20:06
don't want to make I want to make sure
20:07
that we don't miss anything
20:09
I just want to call out to everyone
20:13
um that you have everything
20:16
inside of you already that you need
20:18
right because I think I work a lot with
20:21
people who have these these blocks maybe
20:24
beliefs or fears or things that have
20:27
been passed down from generation to
20:29
generation or that they've learned along
20:31
the way or maybe they made a mistake or
20:33
that you know and they they got this
20:34
lesson that they weren't good enough and
20:37
I beg to differ that everyone everyone
20:40
that I've ever worked with that had ever
20:42
come in contact with has an Incredible
20:44
Gift and I just encourage you to to
20:48
breathe that in to be okay with it and
20:51
then to share it share it out with the
20:52
world
20:53
you heard it here you heard it here
20:55
first do it and check Heather out I mean
20:58
if you are looking for somebody as a to
21:00
motivate you to light that fire under
21:02
your tush he's the one and you know what
21:05
I we didn't give enough conversation
21:07
about your podcast because it is really
21:09
really popular where can they go see you
21:11
listen to your podcast oh you know I'm
21:13
glad that you that you brought that up
21:15
because I have uh the 200th episode
21:19

21:21
big celebration something new every day
21:23
it's called from Fear to fire you can
21:26
find it on iTunes listen notes
21:30
um you know all the traditional
21:31
questions yeah yeah everywhere that you
21:34
would normally find a podcast and
21:36
um I have the most amazing gifts well
21:38
Karen you were on the show and you had
21:41
an incredible episode so we need to get
21:44
that out there to people absolutely
21:48
talk about this right after right after
21:51
the show
21:52
Heather I want to thank you I know that
21:54
you have an incredibly busy life we all
21:56
do but you are really really busy and I
21:58

22:01
Brilliance with our audience and I want
22:03
to thank our audience for taking their
22:05
time to spend it with us because they
22:07
have a choice right they have a choice
22:08
as to where they spent their time and
22:10
they chose to spend it with us and
22:13
oh thank you Ed thank you very much we
22:16
