0:03
Karen Glasser here and welcome to the
0:04
super boomer lifestyle show today we are
0:08
playing big as I welcome brand news
0:10
Vanessa hunter to the show we talk about
0:13
what it means to play all out on this
0:15
show for super boomers that will hatch
0:19
health empowerment and more we have a
0:23
great show for you today
0:24
I am always excited but I'm especially
0:26
excited today but before we go into the
0:29
show let's do some housekeeping first if
0:31
you're here live make sure you tell us
0:33
your hair live make a comment
0:35
we might even put it up on the screen if
0:37
you're here on replay that's awesome as
0:39
well make some comments tell us you're
0:40
here on replay we promise we'll come
0:43
back and have a conversation with you
0:45
and of course shameless request first
0:48
share click that share button and send
0:50
it on out bring on people into the show
0:52
cause the more the merrier so before we
0:57
go into the show we have something new
0:59
that we're adding to the show and it's
1:00
called the super Boomer Pick of the Week
1:03
and so today that pick of the week is
1:06
one of my favorite things that I use all
1:08
the time and that is the adjustable
1:10
tablet stand from my iPad and my Google
1:13
tablet because of course I have to have
1:15
two so I have a stand that holds both of
1:17
them because at a certain point I'm sure
1:19
your shoulders starting to hurt and
1:21
you're you're you can't ever sit right
1:23
so it's always nice to have a little
1:24
stand for that you can also put your
1:25
phone on it one of my favorites and you
1:28
can pick it up in the super Boomer
1:29
lifestyle just by going right here there
1:35
you go all right we're gonna drop that
1:37
out of the show we're gonna bring me
1:39
back on and we're gonna go and introduce
1:42
our special guest for today
1:44
Vanessa hunter she's awesome she's the
1:47
founder and CEO the brand muse creative
1:49
marketing with over 25 years of
1:51
experience in the network marketing
1:53
profession she's particularly passionate
1:55
about supporting those to strive to
1:58
reach their potential her passion for
2:00
empowering women inspired her to create
2:02
a and hosting monthly podcast called
2:04
guts grace and gratitude I love
2:07
named Vanessa we're going to put a link
2:09
up there for people to go check out your
2:11
podcast and in addition she's a strong
2:13
believer in community service supporting
2:15
as well as serving on the board for dan
2:17
and Tony's Life Center an outreach
2:20
program for at-risk students in
2:22
Oceanside California so without further
2:25
ado I bring Vanessa into the show
2:28
Vanessa how are you hi Karen I am
2:33
thrilled thrilled to be here with you
2:36
today well between the two of us I think
2:38
we're gonna like jump out of the out of
2:40
the screen cuz we really are excited
2:41
we've talked about doing the show for
2:43
quite a while and I'm really really
2:45
happy that we finally worked it out that
2:47
you could be on the show with us today
2:49
so I like to start the show always with
2:51
a question and that is the question how
2:54
would you describe a super boomer so the
2:57
way I describe a super boomer we are not
3:00
defined by our age we are defined by how
3:03
we show up in life that's how I define a
3:06
super boomer so Vanessa how would you
3:09
describe a super boomer I would echo
3:12
your thoughts I also think that I think
3:16
that super boomers are bucking the
3:18
system if you will they don't they don't
3:21
really play to societal expectations and
3:24
they just step in to their authenticity
3:28
and let that shine and they realize that
3:31
that's enough that's that is a great
3:34
great answer for a question that
3:37
generally you know it can go anywhere it
3:41
literally it can go anywhere a lot of
3:43
people will say how you describe a super
3:45
boomer it's somebody that doesn't color
3:47
their hair and they let it go gray how
3:49
do you survive a super boomer
3:50
so I love that answer so all of the
3:52
people that are watching the show today
3:53
and on replay how would you describe a
3:56
super boomer put it into the comments
3:58
and maybe we'll pop it up on the screen
4:00
love to hear from you oh we've got
4:02
somebody let's put Jo me up here
4:03
actually she's quoting you super boomer
4:06
bucking the system I love that that's a
4:08
great great quote and vanessa says so
4:10
true Vanessa we bucked the system play
4:14
by the rules etc love it love it love it
4:16
all right so we're gonna jump right into
4:20
the question we talked about playing big
4:22
I love this topic and what I find
4:25
fascinating and I know you're gonna talk
4:27
about it is I came up with this title
4:31
and unbeknownst to me you actually were
4:34
doing an entire talk on this very same
4:37
subject without even knowing about it so
4:39
I want to know how would you describe
4:42
playing big what do we mean when we say
4:44
play big well first of all I'm really
4:46
happy that I was just talking about this
4:49
at an event this past weekend and it was
4:52
just serendipitous that that's your
4:55
subjects right so tell me about today um
4:58
because it's so fresh in my mind and it
5:01
always is because I think about people I
5:04
you know we have people in life that we
5:07
come across that we think oh they have
5:09
so much potential they could do so much
5:12
and then wonder why they don't do you
5:15
wonder why they don't what I call step
5:18
into their greatness they want you you
5:20
just wonder what's holding them back all
5:22
the time yeah what so what do you find I
5:25
mean is there something in particular or
5:27
is it a lot of things or is it just
5:30
their fear I mean there's fear there
5:32
yeah I think a lot of it has to do with
5:35
the fact that we are so we are creatures
5:39
of habit and we are very very very good
5:43
at staying in our comfort zone and
5:45
protecting that comfort zone as much as
5:48
we possibly can to the point where we
5:51
actually get angry if people start to
5:54
try to pull us out of it and so I think
5:58
that that has a lot to do with it I mean
6:00
it all stems back to fear fear of the
6:02
unknown fear of stepping out of the
6:04
comfort zone fear of what you could
6:07
possibly achieve if you really put
6:10
yourself out there and for a lot of
6:13
people it's way easier to just play on
6:15
the sidelines and say and you know toe
6:18
dip into different arenas and and not
6:21
really fully commit to anything right
6:24
right it's a commitment word right and
6:26
so we ended not committing to anything
6:28
that's not you and I though is it weird
6:33
where I would say that we are
6:35
we truly are fearless and we're gonna
6:37
talk a little bit about why we say that
6:40
right now in particular but before we
6:42
get there I really want to talk about
6:43
your desire you have a really deep
6:46
desire to give more than you actually
6:49
get out of life how does that manifest
6:51
tell me I it's almost an it's almost a
6:57
detriment to be quite honest with you
6:59
because in every conversation that I
7:02
have with somebody in every interaction
7:04
that I have with somebody I am only
7:06
comfortable if I'm giving more than I'm
7:09
getting out of it so I'm constantly
7:11
trying to give and and make sure that
7:14
whoever I'm talking to feels like they
7:17
got something out of the conversation or
7:19
something out of the relationship or
7:20
something out of the deal and I
7:23
I always get things out of it of course
7:26
I mean you can't have an honest
7:28
authentic conversation with somebody and
7:30
not get something out of it but it's
7:32
really important to me to get and then
7:35
it becomes at the exchange of energy
7:37
right we want to know that we're not the
7:40
only person it's not that we need but we
7:43
don't want to be the only person that's
7:44
always nice to have that exchange of
7:46
energy equal participation in the
7:49
relationship right oh well participation
7:53
and validation right and so when we're
7:56
sharing these things with people and and
7:58
I find that that's that's what a lot of
8:00
people in an effort to help other people
8:04
see their point of view they end up
8:07
doing what sounds like complaining but
8:10
what they're really doing is trying to
8:11
validate and trying to help people
8:13
through something that maybe they've
8:15
been through before I think you're
8:18
probably very right about that if you're
8:21
just turning onto the show right now
8:23
we're talking about playing big and what
8:26
it means was my very special guest
8:28
Vanessa hunter and we have a common here
8:31
playing big is so much more with tribe
8:33
and community than what helps me to say
8:37
yes it is actually what helps us to say
8:38
yes I think it she's actually marrying
8:41
exactly what you said and that's a very
8:44
true statement I think also it helps us
8:48
no though because you have to just
8:51
decide what you're willing to give up
8:52
unable to be able to say yes to things
8:55
that are going to help you get outside
8:57
your comfort zone so we have another
9:00
guest another person in our comments
9:03
down below Karen panic collie at the age
9:06
of 69 I moved to Italy sold the house
9:09
car furniture I want to be you I want to
9:17
beat you in a couple of years that is
9:19
awesome wait that cat Willeford says way
9:22
to go care and that is Wow
9:25
that's Doug magnet over zone right and
9:28
that's putting yourself out there and
9:30
that's taking a risk that's being
9:31
willing to literally sell it all and you
9:36
know you bet the farm and you made a big
9:40
bold move and I'm sure even that and
9:44
this is what people need to understand
9:45
Karen more than anything even if you
9:48
fail even if it's an epic fail even if
9:51
you put yourself out there and you go
9:53
and do something let's say she moved to
9:54
Italy and then she ended up hating it if
9:57
she had never tried she would never have
10:00
learned that about herself so I don't
10:04
consider any failure a true failure it's
10:07
you live and you learn right totally
10:11
comfort zones are highly overrated in
10:14
cats honey Lou and I always like to
10:17
think about this when I'm making a
10:19
decision like this in something that
10:21
might be based in fear I always say the
10:23
first thing is what's the worst thing
10:25
that could happen let's just go down
10:26
that road what's the worst thing that
10:28
could happen and the next question I ask
10:30
is can I live with that that's a great
10:33
way to frame it up and if I can live
10:36
with it I'll go for it because I already
10:38
know what the worst case is going to be
10:40
I also like talk about failure you fail
10:42
your way to success if you're not
10:44
failing you're not going in the right
10:46
direction that's just my personal
10:48
hi I would say if you're not feeling
10:51
you're not taking any risk whatsoever
10:52
right exactly nice being in the comfort
10:56
zone I you know I don't know if you
10:59
remember that image of too
11:01
circles and then were they intersect yes
11:03
and you know that yeah so all right so
11:07
one of the things that I really respect
11:08
about you is your desire to work in the
11:11
community and to volunteer and to do
11:13
things that are bigger than yourselves
11:15
you're a longtime supporter of women for
11:18
women international tell us a little bit
11:20
about this organization so women for
11:22
women international and is just a
11:24
fantastic organization that helps
11:27
empower women in war-torn regions so
11:29
I've been a long time supporter of them
11:31
and they help by educating people
11:35
educating women on their rights
11:37
especially in regions where they've been
11:39
really really not exposed to some of the
11:44
some of the thought process of the
11:49
empowering thoughts that we're exposed
11:51
to on a daily basis they don't even know
11:53
anything about that a lot of them have
11:55
not even had the power to have their own
11:59
money or their own education or anything
12:01
like that so so that's what that
12:03
organization does and I'm I'm I just
12:05
have such an admiration for the people
12:08
that put themselves out there in those
12:09
regions that are seriously either in the
12:12
middle of war or recovering for more Wow
12:15
that's got to be really powerful to be
12:17
right in the middle of all that and know
12:19
you're making such an important
12:21
difference is this something that's it's
12:23
international so obviously it's
12:24
worldwide are there chapters across the
12:26
the states or how does somebody get
12:28
involved in this it's just go to women
12:31
for women international org and you can
12:33
go check it out there's all kinds of
12:35
things that they have going on
12:36
you can choose to support some but you
12:39
can just make a donation on a monthly
12:41
basis or you could choose to support
12:42
someone in a specific region if
12:45
something really tugs at your heart when
12:47
I first got involved I had read a story
12:50
that really literally brought me to
12:53
tears and I thought I have to do
12:55
something to help and that's when I
12:57
found women for women international and
12:59
got involved and was able to support and
13:03
the cool thing is you can choose to
13:05
support one person you get letters from
13:07
that person you can see their progress
13:10
so it's been eyes like that's wonderful
13:13
and as I mentioned when I introduced you
13:15
with Dan and Tony's Life Center and
13:17
those four at-risk students so you cover
13:20
I mean you you're out there doing really
13:22
good things what do you like the most
13:24
about working with at-risk students well
13:27
I think and in my support through that
13:29
is really just at a board level at this
13:32
point I have been involved in supporting
13:34
youth in organizations and end in
13:37
nonprofits for like my entire adult life
13:41
and and this is what I like about that
13:43
because you talk about something like
13:45
women for women international and that's
13:47
very very on the big international stage
13:50
I'm all about doing things in your own
13:52
community as well and if we can support
13:55
and start at the grassroots effort in
13:58
supporting at-risk kids like like the
14:01
ones in Oceanside right now who are all
14:03
all they're doing they're not like doing
14:06
any massive crazy you know education all
14:11
they're doing is exposing these kids to
14:14
what you and I would consider normal
14:16
things the arts cooking music they would
14:20
just have never ever experienced before
14:23
that's wonderful I mean I just I I look
14:27
up to you for not just you know talking
14:31
your talk you actually you you you walk
14:34
your talk you you take action and you're
14:37
a great role model for so many what
14:42
keeps you moving what is your why why do
14:44
you keep doing this I mean is this you
14:46
know we talked about this being super
14:47
boomers and we're you know we get a
14:49
little bit older it doesn't mean we stop
14:50
doing but what keeps you going what
14:53
keeps you going well I think first of
14:56
all I think as we get older we don't
14:58
stop we actually I'm busier now than
15:01
um what what keeps me going is really
15:05
the desire to give back and that comes
15:08
from and and I've always had that I mean
15:11
I've always had the desire to help other
15:12
people and to be a giver but I think
15:15
that when we are blessed with either
15:18
anything circumstances when we are
15:21
blessed financially when we are blessed
15:22
intelligently you know with intelligence
15:26
whatever we're blessed with even just
15:28
the raw knowledge of what needs to be
15:30
done when we are blessed with those
15:33
things we have to give back like that's
15:35
why you have that knowledge and so that
15:38
you can go out and do something and go
15:40
and help somebody and so I find that
15:43
it's not so much a desire as a core
15:46
purpose well well so I already know what
15:52
tip you're going to share and I actually
15:54
typed it out and I'm gonna put it up on
15:56
the screen in just a minute
15:58
but you're you're very much about making
16:01
a commitment to yourself and doing it
16:04
you if you don't make the commitment
16:05
it's not going to happen and and and it
16:08
is up to you it is not up to anybody
16:10
else it is up to you so in alignment
16:13
with that what tip would you want to
16:15
share with our audience right now well I
16:18
think I will say this I think that I
16:21
think that there are always excuses not
16:23
to do something we can always say we
16:25
don't have enough time and we don't have
16:26
this and we don't have that we don't
16:27
have the resources and all of that what
16:30
what rises to the top of your to-do list
16:34
what becomes the number one priority is
16:37
is what you focus on and you have to
16:40
make that decision too that you want to
16:43
be better that you want to be bolder you
16:45
have to step into it and so you don't
16:48
get the life you deserve you get the
16:50
life you settle for and if you're going
16:52
to settle for playing mediocre that is
16:55
100 percent on you because as you said
16:59
because what you focus on is what what
17:01
what comes to you and so do you have
17:04
anything you do every morning I know I
17:05
have my routine in the morning I'm a big
17:07
Hal Elrod miracle morning girl I do my
17:10
thing every single morning do you have a
17:11
routine in the morning they get you
17:13
focused so that those things you should
17:15
be focusing on you get done because you
17:16
made the commitment yeah not so much in
17:18
the morning I'm I'm all about because I
17:20
like to go to sleep with like a very
17:23
clean mind so I write down all the
17:25
things that I need to do the next day I
17:27
do it at the end of the day so I have at
17:28
the end of the day routine of what did I
17:31
get accomplished today what did I not
17:33
get accomplished what are my top
17:35
priorities for tomorrow that's what I
17:37
then I then I know as soon as I set up
17:39
my desk what I need to get time love it
17:42
love it I actually do it an evening but
17:45
I generally forget half the things
17:46
because I'm so exhausted I'm up early as
17:49
you are and you know by the end of the
17:50
day I mean I've lived through two days
17:54
so one of the reasons that I wanted you
17:57
to come on the show Vanessa is that you
17:58
and I met a little over a year and a
18:00
half ago and we met when you came to
18:04
work at a company that that I'm involved
18:06
with and we became friends and we
18:08
quickly realized that we have very
18:10
similar personalities and we're very you
18:12
know we just go go go go go and you and
18:15
I have an another new opportunity that
18:17
we have stepped into and and when when I
18:20
tell you guys if you are interested in
18:22
knowing what that new opportunity is and
18:26
you want to hear about it I'm we're not
18:27
actually going to mention on on the show
18:29
today you'll understand probably when
18:32
you when you ask for more information so
18:34
I'm encouraging you to put in the
18:37
comments tell me anyone that's
18:40
interested to know what Vanessa and I
18:42
are up to today and next day and the
18:45
week after that and the week after that
18:47
put the words tell me and we will come
18:49
back and give you a link so you can go
18:51
check out what we're doing you know and
18:54
this is about being fearless because
18:55
what we're doing is we're in an industry
18:58
that is the Wild West we are in an
19:02
industry that's challenging at best we
19:05
are making it up as we go and I don't
19:08
mean we're just making it up we are
19:10
making it up as we go we're doing our
19:12
research and figuring out what to do
19:13
what was it about this opportunity
19:15
without talking about the opportunity
19:17
that you said you know I really want to
19:20
do this what was it about it be honestly
19:23
because it's so far out of my comfort
19:26
zone it is so far out of the realm of
19:28
anything I've dealt with before that I
19:31
literally the the minute that my the
19:34
minute I had the urge to say no I knew I
19:38
had to say yes and that's exactly how it
19:42
I was like no I can't do that yes I have
19:44
to I mean with that fast and so it's
19:49
way out of my comfort zone and it and it
19:51
is the wild wild west and I'm really
19:53
really excited to to be one of the
19:55
people that helps pioneer this and it
19:59
was just too attractive yeah and you had
20:02
you know we both had to do the same
20:05
thing as well I mean I come from a you
20:07
know a religious background I'm a
20:09
retired cantor right so some of the
20:11
things that we're getting into and
20:12
jumping it's all legal guys we're not
20:14
talking about illegal stuff but we're
20:15
talking about doing something truly if
20:18
somebody had said to me Vanessa when I
20:20
was 30 years old you know brand new
20:24
mother that I would be in this industry
20:26
I would have said that they were a
20:27
crackpot I mean literally I would not
20:30
have imagined ever and I think that as I
20:32
get older and I'm sure it's probably the
20:34
same with you as I get older I am more
20:37
anxious to try new things I get more and
20:39
more excited about the opportunities are
20:42
out there because I tend to say to
20:44
anybody who is a naysayer they say you
20:46
can't do that I say just watch me it's
20:49
almost my impetus to go and do it how
20:51
about you the same I mean if anybody at
20:54
all the naysayers I am only I have a
20:57
thing that I say am i I don't think I've
20:59
ever said it out loud I say it in my
21:01
head all the time and that is you can
21:04
take a stab at me you can hit me and I'm
21:06
gonna bleed success I say it to myself
21:09
all the time I've never said that out
21:11
loud till now and I'm gonna ask Joey
21:16
Garrity to type it in the comments down
21:18
there because this is a save we have to
21:20
save this one- stab at me you can stab
21:23
me but I'm going to bleed success bleed
21:27
success that's just like my little inner
21:31
cheer that I do all the time but again
21:33
to your point Karen like you couldn't
21:35
imagine yourself getting into the to
21:37
their business that we're getting into
21:39
you know way back when you had little
21:41
kids I couldn't even imagine it a year
21:44
ago I mean that's how life changes right
21:46
and I do believe that opportunities
21:49
present themselves at the right time and
21:52
it's whether or not you are in tune with
21:54
the energy and whether you're in tune
21:56
with the fact that you you could step
21:59
into something that the
22:01
way bigger than yourself that could
22:03
actually propel you forward far faster
22:06
than if you continue to plot along with
22:08
the rate that you are right now totally
22:10
agree Sheila Kennedy says as we get
22:13
older we get bolder that is a great
22:18
quote that quite a few people wanted us
22:21
to tell them so we'll come back after
22:23
the show and we'll put it in there and
22:24
cat says that's a truth for sure Karen
22:27
as we boomers mature we explore more and
22:29
take more risks I'm glad that you guys
22:31
are doing the same thing out there I
22:32
think this isn't a very exciting time in
22:35
truly each year it's exciting I would
22:37
not want to be any other age I don't
22:39
people ask all the time I'm sure you get
22:41
question if you could go back to you
22:43
know 2530 would you oh my god no way I
22:47
would never do that no there is far too
22:49
much in that world for that person that
22:52
was back verily believe I'm a different
22:54
person before that person there was a
22:56
lot of anxiety there was a lot of
22:58
judgment there was a lot of fear there
23:00
was a lot of people pleasing going on
23:02
and there was that was just a lot that
23:05
we as we mature we don't have to worry
23:09
about that anymore we just I just I
23:11
don't worry about what people think and
23:14
I'm far more likely to stand up and and
23:18
fight for what I believe in and fight
23:20
for other people and you know I'm more
23:23
likely to stick my neck out now I love
23:26
it's freeing in a minute respect it's
23:28
freeing as we just don't care we just
23:31
care I just love it I am sure you are
23:33
all wondering how to get in touch with
23:35
Vanessa you can follow Vanessa on
23:37
instagram at the vanessa hunter you can
23:40
follow her on twitter at vanessa hunter
23:44
and we talked about earlier the podcast
23:46
that you have going and i know you're
23:48
going to be recording some new episodes
23:50
guts grace and gratitude pod bing.com go
23:55
check it out sign up for reminders
23:57
because she's got some really really
23:59
great stuff out there Vanessa I would I
24:02
would be lying if I didn't say how much
24:05
I appreciate the fact that you were in
24:07
my life I did not know you a year and a
24:10
half ago and it's it's rare
24:14
that you get to meet somebody that has
24:16
the same work ethic the same person you
24:20
know just everything and so I just
24:22
totally love who you are and our
24:24
friendship and what we're doing together
24:26
again tell me if you want to know what
24:28
it is and we will tell you any last
24:32
thoughts that you would like to share
24:33
before I drop you into the green room I
24:36
just just if you're out there and you're
24:39
listening and you're on the fence and
24:40
you're not sure what to do
24:42
be bold stick yourself out there and be
24:45
bold because you will never people don't
24:48
regret care and I'll tell you this
24:50
people on their deathbed do not regret
24:52
the things they did they regret the
24:53
things they did not do the chances they
24:56
didn't take that true very true so /
25:00
Vanessa go out be bold take those
25:02
chances and and bleed success I dad oh
25:06
my god I think that's good enough to be
25:08
my super boomer moment I'm gonna have to
25:10
take that I'm gonna steal it from you
25:12
thank you so much for taking time out of
25:15
your busy busy day to join us on the
25:16
show today I totally appreciate a drop
25:21
I'm gonna drop you into the green room
25:22
as we finish up the show feeling much
25:25
bye bye oh my god is she amazing I just
25:29
I really really love her and we're gonna
25:32
go right into the super boomer moment
25:33
and there are so many things today that
25:35
I wasn't even sure which to do but I
25:37
really love that quote the quote that
25:39
says you can stab me and I'm going to
25:41
bleed success I just love that visual
25:44
and I think I might just adopt that
25:46
myself because even at the worst of
25:49
times and you're bleeding that can be a
25:52
positive you are literally bleeding
25:53
success so thank you so much for sharing
25:56
that that is such a great comment you
26:00
know what guys you have a choice as to
26:02
where you spend your time I'm delighted
26:04
that you decided to spend your time with
26:05
Vanessa and I today because we
26:07
appreciate you we don't take your
26:09
attention for granted so go out and give
26:12
somebody an awesome day and we will see
26:14
you next time on the next episode of the
26:18
super boomer lifestyle but bye everyone
