hi everybody i'm mel greenberg and i'm
0:02
karen glasser and welcome to uncork life
0:05
exposed in the most unexpected ways
0:07
where what you see is not always what
0:09
you get
0:11
we are so proud to be on the vitalscene
0:13
network and cork just loves being on the
0:15
vitalscene network so thank you vitalsy
0:18
so
0:18
we're celebrating we are celebrating and
0:21
we're going to do one thing we're really
0:23
celebrating so we're going to hope that
0:25
this
0:30
okay
0:32
yay
0:33
i still got it that's my bar we're
0:34
drinking we're drinking a rose prosecco
0:38
today
0:39
and when i told you that you went i made
0:41
a face you made a face you said i don't
0:42
like rose i don't
0:44
but
0:45
we're going to we're going to try to
0:46
it's we're in pink glasses how pretty is
0:48
this this is gorgeous so congratulations
0:50
to you thank you and congratulations to
0:52
you and to all of you thanks for joining
0:54
us on this
0:55
wild a little bit crazy journey this
0:58
past year it's been pretty amazing
1:00
amazing amazing let's see
1:03
i'd rather cheers
1:06
[Music]
1:13
okay
1:14
not a rose girl we're not a rose girl
1:16
okay and i just became not a rose girl
1:18
too
1:21
oh my god
1:23
all right
1:24
well i won't be drinking any more of
1:25
this
1:28
so it goes but why are we celebrating so
1:30
1:32
may
1:33
was our first show
1:34
and i think the coolest thing is so many
1:37
you know coveted the whole everything
1:40
brought people together from
1:42
all walks of life and all corners of the
1:44
world and we met
1:47
and just this kind of evolved
1:50
organically out of that meeting and
1:53
it's been really fun and and thank you
1:54
we've been having a blanking it's so
1:56
much fun and we thank all of you for
1:58
tuning in every single month to listen
2:00
to us you know chit chat and do uh do
2:03
our thing um it's been a year i mean
2:05
that's just when you think about it
2:06
that's hard to believe it's been a year
2:08
and i remember when we did the first
2:10
show we're trying what are we going to
2:11
do it on you know
2:12
and we decided at that time to honor
2:14
mothers because mother it was mother's
2:16
day in may and we're going to honor
2:18
mothers and do that whole thing but a
2:20
lot has happened um each month we had a
2:23
different topic
2:26
do you have a favorite topic
2:28
i you know i really like and it's kind
2:30
of two-fold i loved our december show
2:32
and and part of it is that that was my
2:34
favorite playlist so
2:37
i love the holidays but i loved that
2:40
what we talked about and how
2:42
being connected at this that time of
2:44
year and through such unprecedented
2:46
times that it was the best for me
2:48
and i love this should i stay or should
2:50
i go because it kind of epitomizes how
2:53
different we are and how yet we are much
2:56
like but it was like i was staying you
2:58
were going
2:59
and you know if you think back to when
3:01
that was we all thought we were like
3:03
okay we can go now i didn't i wasn't
3:05
ready but we can go now and you know and
3:07
now we fast forward and now we really
3:09
can go now which is and you're right
3:11
which is good i'm ready it's kind of
3:12
it's kind of a cool thing yeah totally a
3:14
cool thing
3:16
but other things have changed so when we
3:18
started we were kind of on our own we
3:20
were doing our own shows right
3:22
and then we got an amazing opportunity
3:24
um vitalsy yeah
3:27
amazing opportunity it's an incredible
3:28
platform
3:30
and we really are changing the narrative
3:34
of aging and right and
3:36
and we don't really call it anything but
3:38
living the peak stage and absolutely i
3:40
love that because you kind of
3:42
you know we're going along on our lives
3:44
and that that
3:45
description of where we are fits in such
3:49
a beautiful way right
3:51
and one of the other things that we
3:52
changed as we were going along is this
3:54
the fact that we are sitting side by
3:56
side right and never just no longer you
3:59
over there and me over here i mean if we
4:00
have to do it that we will but thanks
4:03
thanks to mel who schleps all the way
4:04
into palm desert from from arizona and
4:07
she insists it's only like how many
4:08
hours did you say
4:09
five i think that's a lot of hours but
4:12
she comes and i'm i'm forever grateful
4:13
that she does because we get to sit here
4:16
and just do our thing without without
4:18
worrying about what's going on on the
4:20
other side of the world or the other
4:22
side of the state and also i think it
4:23
changes our energy so i'm grateful for
4:26
you i'm totally grateful for you and the
4:28
fact that it was fun for me to come here
4:29
i i
4:30
as i shared i grew up in southern
4:32
california right so i get to visit
4:33
friends and family
4:35
and then and then be here and i love the
4:37
coachella valley so a lot of exciting
4:39
things have happened though in addition
4:41
to that so you know we're on the
4:42
vitalscene network so that's where you
4:44
go to watch the shows but some people
4:45
like to
4:46
listen to a podcast every so often right
4:49
so we launched on spotify which is
4:51
freaking cool yeah because it's spotify
4:54
you know it's right it's kind of a
4:56
spotify
4:57
but what's really cool about spotify
4:58
also is that we actually have the show
5:00
there too so we want you to stop off
5:02
first and vitalsy because we want you to
5:04
go binge watch all the shows but if
5:06
you're so inclined because you want to
5:08
take us on the road in your car or while
5:09
you're walking while you're at you know
5:11
last month i know we did a whole thing
5:12
on you know getting exercise and
5:14
everything but we're we did spotify
5:17
we're on roku we're on amazon fire we're
5:19
all over the place as i like to say and
5:21
we're growing and that's grown we we
5:23
started it was just like let's give it a
5:25
try and see what happens and then
5:27
um platforms you know started reaching
5:29
out and the opportunities to keep
5:31
growing and our greatest
5:34
gift and we're so grateful to be on the
5:36
vital c network oh we love it there too
5:38
it's a total game changer um we love
5:41
everyone there i mean they're they're
5:42
the best they're so supportive and we're
5:44
supportive of them we i think it's a
5:45
mutual admiration society at this point
5:49
so we're what we're saying is we're
5:51
going to continue we're going to keep
5:52
doing our shows and we have some really
5:55
fun things coming up in this next year
5:58
and over the summer and
6:01
we're going to i love taking a look back
6:03
i you know i'm constantly flipping
6:05
through my phone looking at pictures
6:07
yeah it's just it's hard to believe
6:10
it's only been a year and yet and it
6:12
feels like a long time ago it's been a
6:14
year yeah yeah and so one of the big
6:16
things were when we first launched the
6:18
show we had we called it something else
6:19
it was not called
6:21
of course it was called savoring midlife
6:24
because about a year ago i think we both
6:26
thought that was like the buzzword that
6:28
was the word and we were going to use
6:29
that word saber
6:30
and we got through the first show and we
6:32
both looked at each other and said
6:34
that's we don't even like that i don't
6:36
like the word and and what is midlife
6:38
anymore i don't know midlife is at 80
6:41
because we're going to live what is
6:42
midlife and it didn't represent i think
6:44
it did not represent who who we are what
6:47
did represent us well i don't really
6:49
want to drink it right now but what did
6:51
represent us is that we enjoy we enjoy
6:53
being together and celebrating together
6:55
and maybe drinking together as we uncork
6:58
whatever the topic is well and we what
7:00
we liked about that and how the name
7:01
kind of
7:03
came into came to fruition was that
7:05
uncorking is is really peeling back the
7:08
layers on topics that impact us all
7:11
and specifically
7:13
50 plus 45 plus um
7:16
they change and we're changing and
7:18
rather than
7:20
falling into the the
7:22
right you know the contrived narrative
7:24
we really want to peel back and talk
7:26
about and share vulnerability because i
7:28
think we try and we hope and that we're
7:32
sharing and saying things that that
7:34
you're thinking about
7:35
right and want to talk about and we want
7:37
to bring conversations to the forefront
7:39
that need to be right
7:42
and vulnerability is is one of the big
7:43
ones one of the big ones you know for me
7:46
it was it was becoming vulnerable with
7:48
my hair which i know sounds kind of
7:50
silly sometimes but growing my hair out
7:52
putting myself out as who i really was i
7:55
was me and i happen to have gray hair
7:58
and i was going to go and do it did you
7:59
know i have always wanted to ask yeah
8:02
because i haven't always watched the the
8:03
people that do the progressions and i
8:04
know you did that once before i knew you
8:06
but did you know you were gray
8:08
underneath oh my gosh did you no i was
8:10
gonna be
8:14
my mother has been white since she was
8:16
30 years old she's now 86 years old but
8:19
she went white at 30.
8:21
so at 30 when my white started to come
8:24
in and when
8:27
not doing that because back then
8:30
35 years
8:32
35 years ago god i'm old uh 35 years ago
8:35
now i'm just peak stage
8:37
back then if you had gray hair white
8:40
hair as a woman not as a man but as a
8:42
woman i was i we would have difficulty
8:44
getting please a man it's distinguished
8:47
women we're old and i i kind of bought
8:50
into that
8:51
and so
8:52
every two weeks because my hair grows
8:54
literally i mean look at this uh two
8:57
inches a month i'm sorry one inch a
8:58
month and if you have white hair you
9:01
every i mean it's growing right and so i
9:04
would go in every two weeks to get my
9:05
hair colored and i'd sit with the
9:06
hairdresser for two hours
9:08
the most the biggest waste of time in my
9:11
in my estimation just sitting there for
9:13
two hours taking time for myself how
9:15
silly is that right taking time for
9:17
myself and i hated it
9:18
and every year i would say i just need
9:21
to let it go and then i would say oh no
9:23
because you know i won't get a job
9:25
when and here i am sitting on camera
9:27
week after week talking about being
9:28
authentic and in my head this was so not
9:31
authentic my dark hair my hair was black
9:33
i mean my hair was black black
9:37
so i thought you know what i'm just
9:39
going to do it
9:41
so did you dye it gray and then let it
9:43
go no you've just i
9:45
like in fact you know what maybe we'll
9:47
air this one time but i literally every
9:50
week i had a guest on my show and i
9:52
would say it's time for the reveal
9:54
and i would go like this
9:56
and i would go like that and each week
9:59
my white kept getting longer and longer
10:02
and longer sort of like an ombre kind of
10:03
thing did you cut your hair nope
10:05
i just let it go let it go totally cool
10:08
and i loved it because the minute i did
10:12
that i made myself like everybody else i
10:14
was just a normal person
10:16
and up until that point
10:19
people uh there seemed to be a tendency
10:22
that they that people that knew me
10:24
thought i was different than i really
10:25
was
10:26
i'm interested i was me i was me just
10:28
like everybody else but this really was
10:30
the best thing i ever did so your black
10:31
hair was maybe a bit more of a mask oh
10:34
totally a mask totally messed i i had
10:37
totally gotten into that
10:39
long dark flowing black hair sexy ash do
10:43
you think that we do that and maybe more
10:45
as women
10:47
um that we we
10:48
find or conceal our identity in our hair
10:52
whether it's long hair or
10:54
color my hair defines me i don't know
10:56
about my hair defines me i am about my
10:58
hair and i'm letting it go i actually
10:59
bought in for a while that older women
11:01
should not have long hair
11:03
i've literally bought into that and i
11:04
thought okay i'm gonna start cutting and
11:05
i was cutting it cutting it
11:07
and now i'm not cutting it because you
11:10
know what i like it it should be and we
11:12
talked about this last month you should
11:14
be who you are what are you so happy
11:17
what what you wear how your makeup um i
11:20
do find that i
11:22
have
11:23
deeply streamlined my makeup
11:26
because i you know used to always get
11:28
the colors that were out and just and
11:30
less is more for me
11:32
and
11:34
you kind of find the colors that work
11:35
which tend to be very neutral
11:37
um and simple i mean literally my travel
11:40
bag now is like this and i used to have
11:43
bags of makeup i i am i'm totally i'm
11:46
very low maintenance always have been
11:47
though yeah i mean i i did not say i was
11:49
nominated
11:50
i
11:51
i forget the only thing that i really
11:53
should put on because i disappeared is
11:54
my lipstick and i forget to put lipstick
11:56
on and people always say after
11:58
what happened to your lips or if i'm
12:01
sitting behind a white wall my head
12:03
disappears
12:05
into the white into the water into the
12:06
white so my same thing with me makeup
12:09
has completely
12:10
become that's kind of nice a couple of
12:12
things i get ready and i'm done right
12:14
now it's kind of like i i find myself
12:16
doing that in our home
12:18
you know just
12:19
getting rid of i just things i don't
12:21
need a lot of things i like nice things
12:23
right like i said i'm never said i was
12:25
low maintenance but
12:27
i just i just i need the plethora of
12:29
every little thing that comes out and
12:31
every new thing that comes out right
12:33
although my husband might do it because
12:35
i
12:36
do like to shop it's fun i i used to
12:38
like to shop um i think coveted put a
12:41
kibosh on that because i stopped
12:43
shopping i stopped going out oh but
12:44
that's not true i shopped online didn't
12:46
i i shopped online so maybe i do still
12:48
like to shop i still shop a lot online
12:51
because i'm in a small town
12:53
so many stores that i like and the
12:55
brands that i like are not local
12:57
so i do a lot of shaping online you know
13:00
one of the things that i think i've
13:01
learned this entire year as we've been
13:03
doing these shows is that it's making me
13:05
put myself out there in a way that i
13:06
didn't use to put myself out there yeah
13:08
right i mean the fact that we can sit
13:09
here and have these conversations which
13:11
we hope you guys are enjoying and and if
13:13
you have any thoughts or any any input
13:15
as to what we're talking about we'd love
13:17
to hear from you let us know what you're
13:19
thinking let us know how your year has
13:21
changed from last year to this year yeah
13:23
i mean i that really is the that was the
13:25
impetus and it is the the driving force
13:28
behind what we do to to spark and even
13:30
if we don't hear from you that you start
13:32
a dinner table conversation or right you
13:34
know with your friends right
13:36
um
13:37
topics and and if you have type there's
13:39
something that you've been
13:41
bothered by or wondering about or would
13:43
like a deeper dive into right now just
13:45
shoot us an email and we'll touch on it
13:48
you know we're not
13:49
afraid of any topic
13:51
we are not afraid of any topic so tell
13:53
us about your writing what's going on
13:54
with your writing these days from last
13:56
year to this year are you you're writing
13:57
another book you have another book i am
13:59
and i'm actually um i mean the trilogy
14:02
is it dances between women's fiction and
14:05
romance but i am working on a true
14:07
romance novel and it's really fun
14:10
and it takes place um in the horse
14:13
racing industry i love it again fun so
14:16
um without saying anymore um it will be
14:18
out
14:19
well you know the question i'm going to
14:20
ask when it does come out is why did you
14:22
do it in that in the horse industry how
14:25
did you pick that as your environment
14:28
um the storyline it it just sort of it
14:31
grew and and when i started thinking
14:32
about the characters and the setting and
14:34
what i wanted that setting to be
14:36
um
14:37
it all fit and i love as you as you may
14:40
or may not know my youngest son played
14:42
football at the university of kentucky i
14:43
love lexington and i love
14:46
the horse industry and
14:48
um i love horses
14:50
but just all of it i'm fascinated by it
14:53
and we have friends in it so i have good
14:55
resources and that's important to
14:57
authenticity of the story
15:00
and so yeah it was a chance to get back
15:02
to kentucky how fun how fun
15:06
hey guys you know we were talking about
15:07
how we're all over every place but we
15:09
really do want you to go over to vital c
15:11
go to vitalsy.com forward slash watch
15:14
forward slash uncourt all of the shows
15:16
live there in addition to all these
15:18
other shows that are there we have a
15:19
sports show that is
15:21
going crazy with some amazing athletes
15:23
we have
15:24
and it's a great perspective it's called
15:26
overtime yeah you know your identity and
15:28
we've talked about this on the show our
15:30
identity and and how that evolves
15:33
as an athlete and those athletes at the
15:35
top of their game um either as amateurs
15:39
olympians or professional right when
15:41
that's over yeah who are they yeah what
15:43
so it's really fascinating and some of
15:45
the guests are just mind-blowing
15:49
it's incredible i laugh you know because
15:51
i produce the show and i i sit and i
15:52
list i'm not a sports girl at all i mean
15:55
i literally i want to know what inning
15:57
they're in when they're playing football
15:59
i mean i literally don't have any
16:00
concept however i become a sports girl
16:02
because i am learning from all these
16:04
amazing athletes and their stories and
16:06
where where they came from it's it's
16:08
what they're doing now yeah and what
