of the reasons that i wanted to bring you on first of all you're amazing and your book is amazing and the fact that you you talk about grandparents

the whole thing about holidays for me is about family and celebration and i know that you feel the same way right

absolutely the first thing i think about when i think of the holidays is my family because it's a time of

gathering when you spend with the people you love whether that's your best friend or grandparents siblings

aunts uncles cousins and that's what the whole essence of my book grammy and me is about so i spent a lot

of the holidays when i was a young girl yeah and so it's a great thing to be

able to remember that and to bring it into the future right is it's almost like she's here with us

um you know one of the things we chatted about this morning was the whole idea of diversity you asked me a question

why was it important to do a show like this and i said well originally we weren't going to do a show like this we

were going to do three separate shows and i realized if we have if we're going to walk our our talk we need to do a a show that has

everything in it it's all about diversity you're right about that uh christmas may be the dominant holiday in

america at least but there's so many other cultures out there and america is just

one big melting pot everyone celebrates something different so it's important that children and people of all ages

quite frankly can learn about it exactly and i i think that the sooner we teach our

kids uh and our grandkids and our nieces and our nephews and the young people in our life that we're basically all the same we have

many many similarities and we're going to talk about that in the holidays today because our first

guest that we're going to be bringing up is going to be reading a story about hanukkah and it's called dancing dreidels

so before we bring her in i want everyone to get comfortable with whoever you came with maybe it's your mom your dad your grandparent

maybe it's a reindeer i don't know maybe you have a pet dreidel whoever it is snuggling it's party time

so our first reader tyra is alva sax she's the founder of three wishes publishing

and i bought my pet dreidel with me as you mentioned this is sheila shin and she has the

hebrew letter shin on her tummy because it's one of the letters represented on a dreidel i don't know if

at all you know what a dreidel is or what it looks like if you haven't seen one but this is a dreidel it's a

four-sided spinning top they're made in different sizes this one happens to be

metal this one happens to be wood and dreidel was a game that

the jewish people played a long long time ago

when they were studying the torah which was their books about their religion and um they didn't want to get caught

practicing their own religion so the dreidel has a very very large significance historical

significance actually dancing dreidels takes that story and we turn it into

something that we could share with the holiday for jewish people around the world

and this is dancing dreidel it's a story of four best friends

rebecca found the box that she was looking for in her closet carefully picking it up

she made her way down the stairs

what do you have there as rebecca's mother these are the dreidels you gave me from when you were a little girl

said rebecca hanukkah is just around the corner i decided this year all my dreidels

would be ready to dance for the big hanukkah party

rebecca hanukkah is not just around the corner it is over a month away her mother said

well that's okay i it means i have plenty of time to practice with my

special dreidels answered rebecca gently opening the box

rebecca laid the dreidels one by one across the floor

there were so many different sizes and colors four hebrew letters faced up as she

turned each side nun shin and gibble

the hebrew letters together spell out

which means a great miracle happened here

digging down to the bottom of the box rebecca found the four dreidels she liked the best she'd given each of

them their own name there was harry hey neil nun gail gimmel and sheila shin they could

dance the longest in any of the other dreidels except for sheila

rebecca gave each dreidel a twist to start them spinning across the floor

harry neal and gail delighted in the whirling and the twirling but sheila tumbled to her side in

seconds the dreidels were placed in the box for

practice tomorrow and here you can see sheila really really trying to spin

and she's having a really really hard time

have you ever tried to do something and it was hard whether you're learning to ride your bicycle or to swim

or to play baseball or soccer sometimes it's a little more difficult

nighttime came quickly harry neal gail and sheila hopped onto the floor very quietly not to wake

anyone phew whisper neil i thought it was really hanukkah

i'm very glad it is not hanukkah sheila said i love hanukkah the lighting of the

menorah and the wonderful stories and the yummy food but when the music

starts and all the other dreidels are out on the floor spinning every year i am laying on my side

and here they are all together having their little conversation together

maybe this year will be different said harry we can practice together at night and then when all will be ready to spin

in time for hanukkah

each night they practiced while everyone was asleep all four dreidels sang and danced sheila

tried harder and harder but still kept falling

i love to spin and sing the hanukkah songs i don't know why i keep falling sheila

it's really nice that all her friends are there to support her right that makes it even more special for

as soon as she knew everyone else was sleeping she quietly slipped out of the box

i made it out of clay and when is dry and ready then dreidel i shall play sheila danced

around the kitchen over and over again ouch sheila cried out uh she dropped to the floor get up

the night flew by the sun peeked in the window sheila heard

footsteps she was practicing so hard she did not realize it was daytime

and she was supposed to be in the box with all the other dreidels rebecca walked into the

she placed her inside with the others i was sure i put you all away last night

hanukkah was here at last the doorbell rang and in rock zadie bubby uncle paul

chicken soup potato latkes chala brisket and jelly donuts fill the air the menorah shone brightly

as everyone gathered around to recite the hanukkah prayers together and here's the menorah right in the

middle of the table for everyone to light and participate with

mazel tov everyone shouted it's time to sing dance and spin the dreidel rebecca's

rebecca and her dreidels opened the box and her cousins helped and took them out

one by one i have a surprise for everyone tonight rebecca said my four dreidels

are special they're going to be dancing dreidels performing through their very

own song rebecca lined them up on the floor the music started and she spun each one

until they were all dancing harry neil gail and sheila began to spin

rebecca's heart pounded with excitement all four dreidels were up and spinning

when the music stopped the dreidels fell to the floor

i do i do so we actually celebrate christmas eve and my sister and my brother and my

niece all get together and open presents and eat cookies and do dinner and we kind of spread it

out over hours so it's great you know we ooh and ah over every present and then we hop in

the car with some hot cocoa we go look at christmas lights and then the next day i actually spend

christmas with my best friend one of my friends from high school and his family and we kind of do the

same thing so we open presents in the morning we have a nice big breakfast and then we just you know hang out all during the

day so for me christmas is all about family and friends and connecting and making memories i i

right behind you i celebrate christmas too and christmas trees come in all different sizes

and colors so mine is pink and white where haley's is more of the traditional greens and

ornaments tell a story each ornament tells a story it's handed down usually from generation to generation

i've got ornaments on my friend's tree so when i go over there i see like my parents in them and it's just you know

the menorah every night i'm making latkes this year i'm gonna make them outside guys because it smells

you know the oil and the potatoes and it stinks up the whole house so i'm gonna make them outside and i

might eat you know i might even send a recipe out if you guys are interested one of the things that we told you we

were gonna do today and this is my little surprise is we're going to show you how to make candy dreidels

um and so what i'd like to do right now is show you the instruction and that instruction list is

going to be over there's a picture that's going to be in the comments and you're going to know you need these three ingredients you need

marshmallows you need chocolate kisses and you also need licorice how bad can

that possibly be so i'm going to show people right now you want to take a marshmallow right

you want to take a little piece of licorice if you like black licorice do black licorice like red licorice and

you're going to screw it in to the top that's the top of the dreidel

and then there's nothing better than candy kisses so what i do is i take the candy kiss

and then i take my a toothpick or fingernail or something and i scratch the bottom to make it

all sticky why because we're going to take that candy kiss and we're going to stick it to the

bottom of the dreidel and you now have candy dreidels the thing with candy

dreidels are though is that they don't last very long because we end up

eating them and that's another tradition we saw in all of those books everyone loves to eat on the holidays oh
