0:12
share the holidays in the comments and you're going to be entered to win all three of our books how cool is that
0:20
we are so excited to share the holidays with all of you so let's just jump in and have some fun today we are celebrating hanukkah
0:27
christmas and kwanzaa with some great stories and some special treats so first i would like to introduce my
0:34
co-host for today the amazing tyra majors she's a morning news reporter for k b a
0:40
k k b f x eyewitness news she's a talk show host she's a children's book author in her own right
0:46
and tyra joined me on the show earlier this year to read from her first book grammy and me which she wrote to capture
0:51
and celebrate the beautiful memories of their summers together and so without further ado i am going to
0:57
bring tyra in to the show there you go hello everyone i'm so happy
1:04
to be here thank you so much karen for that amazing introduction well i'm just delighted i want to thank
1:10
you i joined uh tyra earlier this morning really earlier this morning like literally really early in the
1:16
morning early to go on the news 6 a.m to be exact it was awesome it was
1:21
awesome and we we did a shout out for the show and we also did a shout out for the giveaways that we're doing um tyra one
1:28
of the reasons that i wanted to bring you on first of all you're amazing and your book is amazing and the fact that you you talk about grandparents
1:35
the whole thing about holidays for me is about family and celebration and i know that you feel the same way right
1:42
absolutely the first thing i think about when i think of the holidays is my family because it's a time of
1:47
gathering when you spend with the people you love whether that's your best friend or grandparents siblings
1:54
aunts uncles cousins and that's what the whole essence of my book grammy and me is about so i spent a lot
2:02
of the holidays when i was a young girl yeah and so it's a great thing to be
2:07
able to remember that and to bring it into the future right is it's almost like she's here with us
2:13
um you know one of the things we chatted about this morning was the whole idea of diversity you asked me a question
2:18
why was it important to do a show like this and i said well originally we weren't going to do a show like this we
2:23
were going to do three separate shows and i realized if we have if we're going to walk our our talk we need to do a a show that has
2:31
everything in it it's all about diversity you're right about that uh christmas may be the dominant holiday in
2:39
america at least but there's so many other cultures out there and america is just
2:45
one big melting pot everyone celebrates something different so it's important that children and people of all ages
2:52
quite frankly can learn about it exactly and i i think that the sooner we teach our
2:58
kids uh and our grandkids and our nieces and our nephews and the young people in our life that we're basically all the same we have
3:05
many many similarities and we're going to talk about that in the holidays today because our first
3:10
guest that we're going to be bringing up is going to be reading a story about hanukkah and it's called dancing dreidels
3:16
so before we bring her in i want everyone to get comfortable with whoever you came with maybe it's your mom your dad your grandparent
3:22
maybe it's a reindeer i don't know maybe you have a pet dreidel whoever it is snuggling it's party time
3:29
so our first reader tyra is alva sax she's the founder of three wishes publishing
3:34
company and a former elementary school teacher with 16 years of classroom experience and a master's degree in
3:40
education alva's an educator consultant speaker and presenter and she is a best-selling author she has
3:48
multiple books out and we're thrilled because she is with us today and i'm going to bring in leaving
3:54
we're so excited hey can you hear me we can hear you
4:00
we're getting lucky right now so i'm going to nice to meet you nice to meet you too alvin i'm going to
4:07
turn it over to you so that you can read your book okay
4:14
and i bought my pet dreidel with me as you mentioned this is sheila shin and she has the
4:21
hebrew letter shin on her tummy because it's one of the letters represented on a dreidel i don't know if
4:29
at all you know what a dreidel is or what it looks like if you haven't seen one but this is a dreidel it's a
4:37
four-sided spinning top they're made in different sizes this one happens to be
4:43
metal this one happens to be wood and dreidel was a game that
4:51
the jewish people played a long long time ago
4:56
when they were studying the torah which was their books about their religion and um they didn't want to get caught
5:04
practicing their own religion so the dreidel has a very very large significance historical
5:10
significance actually dancing dreidels takes that story and we turn it into
5:19
something that we could share with the holiday for jewish people around the world
5:25
and this is dancing dreidel it's a story of four best friends
5:30
sheila shin harry kay gail gimmel and neil nunn
5:38
so let's get comfy and let's get started
5:47
what's happening who turned the light on a tiny voice whispered i don't know
5:54
answered another there was silence
6:06
rebecca found the box that she was looking for in her closet carefully picking it up
6:13
she made her way down the stairs
6:18
what do you have there as rebecca's mother these are the dreidels you gave me from when you were a little girl
6:24
said rebecca hanukkah is just around the corner i decided this year all my dreidels
6:32
would be ready to dance for the big hanukkah party
6:39
rebecca hanukkah is not just around the corner it is over a month away her mother said
6:46
well that's okay i it means i have plenty of time to practice with my
6:51
special dreidels answered rebecca gently opening the box
7:03
rebecca laid the dreidels one by one across the floor
7:08
there were so many different sizes and colors four hebrew letters faced up as she
7:15
turned each side nun shin and gibble
7:20
the hebrew letters together spell out
7:26
which means a great miracle happened here
7:31
digging down to the bottom of the box rebecca found the four dreidels she liked the best she'd given each of
7:40
them their own name there was harry hey neil nun gail gimmel and sheila shin they could
7:47
dance the longest in any of the other dreidels except for sheila
8:03
rebecca gave each dreidel a twist to start them spinning across the floor
8:10
harry neal and gail delighted in the whirling and the twirling but sheila tumbled to her side in
8:17
seconds the dreidels were placed in the box for
8:23
practice tomorrow and here you can see sheila really really trying to spin
8:29
and she's having a really really hard time
8:34
have you ever tried to do something and it was hard whether you're learning to ride your bicycle or to swim
8:41
or to play baseball or soccer sometimes it's a little more difficult
8:48
nighttime came quickly harry neal gail and sheila hopped onto the floor very quietly not to wake
8:55
anyone phew whisper neil i thought it was really hanukkah
9:02
i'm very glad it is not hanukkah sheila said i love hanukkah the lighting of the
9:08
menorah and the wonderful stories and the yummy food but when the music
9:13
starts and all the other dreidels are out on the floor spinning every year i am laying on my side
9:20
and here they are all together having their little conversation together
9:28
maybe this year will be different said harry we can practice together at night and then when all will be ready to spin
9:42
each night they practiced while everyone was asleep all four dreidels sang and danced sheila
9:50
tried harder and harder but still kept falling
9:55
i love to spin and sing the hanukkah songs i don't know why i keep falling sheila
10:01
said softly maybe you need to practice more sheila said neil we know you can do it gail
10:10
said i think so too harry said you guys are the best said sheila
10:18
i'm really tired now it's bedtime for me
10:24
it's really nice that all her friends are there to support her right that makes it even more special for
10:31
someone who might be having a difficult time
10:39
before you could count to three one two three harry neil
10:46
and gail were fast asleep sheila was only pretending to sleep
10:51
as soon as she knew everyone else was sleeping she quietly slipped out of the box
10:57
and here she is slipping out of the box
11:03
and trying to spin and dance i can do this she whispered to herself
11:09
she began singing the dreidel song in her head dreidel dreidel dreidel
11:14
i made it out of clay and when is dry and ready then dreidel i shall play sheila danced
11:21
around the kitchen over and over again ouch sheila cried out uh she dropped to the floor get up
11:28
sheila you can do it
11:40
the night flew by the sun peeked in the window sheila heard
11:46
footsteps she was practicing so hard she did not realize it was daytime
11:52
and she was supposed to be in the box with all the other dreidels rebecca walked into the
11:58
kitchen why are you out of the box sheila she asked picking her up
12:03
she placed her inside with the others i was sure i put you all away last night
12:14
here's a picture everybody at the dinner table getting ready for the hanukkah celebration
12:24
hanukkah was here at last the doorbell rang and in rock zadie bubby uncle paul
12:30
aunt sadie and cousins matthew mara and maureen the delicious smells of
12:37
chicken soup potato latkes chala brisket and jelly donuts fill the air the menorah shone brightly
12:44
as everyone gathered around to recite the hanukkah prayers together and here's the menorah right in the
12:52
middle of the table for everyone to light and participate with
12:57
mazel tov everyone shouted it's time to sing dance and spin the dreidel rebecca's
13:11
rebecca and her dreidels opened the box and her cousins helped and took them out
13:18
one by one i have a surprise for everyone tonight rebecca said my four dreidels
13:25
are special they're going to be dancing dreidels performing through their very
13:31
own song rebecca lined them up on the floor the music started and she spun each one
13:38
until they were all dancing harry neil gail and sheila began to spin
13:44
rebecca's heart pounded with excitement all four dreidels were up and spinning
13:49
when the music stopped the dreidels fell to the floor
13:55
there they are dancing away
14:01
looks like sheila made it huh clapping and shearing filled the room rebecca gathered her
14:08
special dreidels and bowed
14:15
bravo hooray cheers warm tea and jelly donuts ended the
14:21
hanukkah celebration sharing hugs and smiles everyone had at home rebecca carefully
14:29
placed the four dreidels back in their box we knew you couldn't do what she looked shouted harry neal
14:35
and gail sheila winked at them and knew that hanukkah would even be better
14:41
next year and there they are on a nightstand by rebecca's bed
14:48
and that's a story of dancing dreidels and in the back of the book we have some special information that
14:54
you can read all about why we have hanukkah some of the foods we eat the customs
15:01
and there's also in the way way back how to play the dreidel game which you
15:07
can play with raisins or nuts or m m's or anything to make a pot
15:13
so that when you spin your dreidel you can win the whole pot alva that was an amazing story thank you
15:20
so much um i'm actually gonna put you on mute so we don't get any feedback right now but i'd like to show people how they can get
15:27
a copy of the book and also we have a really cool um handout so this is one of the
15:34
handouts that people are going to be able to get when they go um to once upon a story time you
15:40
could actually go to once upon a storytime dot live and pick up the free
15:45
download it is absolutely free you don't have to pay for it we want everyone to have one
15:52
so alba you're awesome i wanted to show everyone we have a copy of the book
15:58
this is one of the books that we're going to be giving away today can't wait thank you
16:08
amazing what a great story and a lot of traditions in that book as
16:14
well not only the dreidels but the food the jelly donuts and the warm tea
16:20
how awesome is that how awesome is that you know we're getting ready to move into the christmas
16:25
area and i think we have our storyteller for christmas we brought her in we were having some technical difficulties
16:31
earlier but i think we got her so before i bring her in i'd like to make a quick introduction to haley rose
16:39
haley rose is awesome hayley rose has been entertaining and educating children across the country since 2002
16:46
wow her range of educational interactive concept books have earned over 50 national and
16:52
international book awards and we are welcoming hayley to the show to read her book fifo gets ready
17:01
for christmas and there she is hooray
17:06
oh my gosh let me let me fix this right now oh my gosh haley i'm so glad you're in we were having some technical
17:12
difficulties earlier but you persevered you were going to come and try no matter what before we get to the
17:19
story though haley um do you have a tradition that you do over christmas time is there something that you do for christmas
17:25
i do i do so we actually celebrate christmas eve and my sister and my brother and my
17:32
niece all get together and open presents and eat cookies and do dinner and we kind of spread it
17:38
out over hours so it's great you know we ooh and ah over every present and then we hop in
17:44
the car with some hot cocoa we go look at christmas lights and then the next day i actually spend
17:49
christmas with my best friend one of my friends from high school and his family and we kind of do the
17:55
same thing so we open presents in the morning we have a nice big breakfast and then we just you know hang out all during the
18:00
day so for me christmas is all about family and friends and connecting and making memories i i
18:08
agree tyra you have some traditions right in your face absolutely absolutely i was actually looking at your christmas tree
18:15
right behind you i celebrate christmas too and christmas trees come in all different sizes
18:21
and colors so mine is pink and white where haley's is more of the traditional greens and
18:26
reds i love it i love a christmas tree because um the
18:32
ornaments tell a story each ornament tells a story it's handed down usually from generation to generation
18:38
i've got ornaments on my friend's tree so when i go over there i see like my parents in them and it's just you know
18:44
it's just fantastic and it's all about variety so haley it's your turn we're going to bring you up
18:50
and have you read your story um fifa gets ready for christmas are you
18:55
ready i am i'm finding the first page so i'm just about ready and here i am so i'll tell
19:00
you a little bit about um so special gets ready for christmas so kind of going
19:05
on the same what we just talked about our traditions these are actually all my traditions
19:11
getting ready up until christmas so it's fifo gets ready for christmas and this might be a little backwards i'm
19:18
not sure but i'm going to read it to you so come along with fifo as he gets ready to celebrate christmas
19:26
fifo decorates a tree with an elf fifo pots poinsettias with cupid
19:36
fifo creates ornaments with a nutcracker and fifo bakes cookies with comet so do
19:43
you have a favorite cookie or favorite ornament i do my favorite cookie chocolate chip
19:50
coconut what's your favorite cookie i like that one too all right
19:56
fipo wraps presents with a gingerbread man and fifo builds a wreath with vixen
20:05
vital hangs lights with the sugar plum berry and fifo makes fruit
20:12
fruit cake with rudolph do you hang lights on your house or on your tree
20:17
i like lights this is one of my favorites though fifo enjoys a candy king with dancer
20:24
although i hear dancer hogs the candy kings so i've got my own all right and then
20:31
fifo sends out cards with jack frost and the great thing about a card here's
20:37
some of my cards that i'm sending out this year is that it's also a keepsake so you can look back
20:43
um you know years later and find out you know what your parents or your friends sent you and it's a really nice keepsake
20:48
so send a card all right bifo enters a gingerbread house
20:54
with prancer and fifo rings bells with a snowman
21:01
it's my little bell all right next up what else are we going to do to get
21:07
ready for the holiday bipo sings carols with blitzen
21:13
and fifo stands under the mistletoe with mrs claus
21:20
fifo puts up holly with dasher and fifo serves dinner with the three
21:26
wise men so it's always great to give back during the holiday season for those
21:31
who are a little less fortunate a little struggling fifo drinks eggnog with donner fifo
21:39
delivers toys with santa
21:44
and fifo spends time with loved ones what's your favorite part about
21:49
christmas do you have a favorite part oh my gosh beautiful
21:56
beautiful that's really cool that is really cool and you sent us some really cool uh download
22:02
sheets that is part of the download that is absolutely free all people have to do is
22:07
go over to uh once upon a story time.live and the download is there and i'm going to go
22:13
ahead and put the download in here right now you sent us actually four different things
22:18
um you sent us some coloring sheets which is what i'm showing right now
22:23
and a coloring envelope which is so cool and it's part of what you were
22:29
talking about with with the cards right with the cards you also presented us with a colored one
22:35
already in a different picture and an envelope so that our all of our friends can take it and
22:41
cut it out and use it to send out tyra how cool is this i love the cut out letter idea when i was a
22:48
young girl celebrating christmas you mentioned cookies in your book we always baked cookies or cupcakes for
22:54
santa santa claus but we also wrote letters to santa
23:00
and um we would ship them off to santa and mrs claus uh weeks before christmas
23:06
giving him our wish list so there's an idea for for all of the kids at home it's
23:12
wonderful it's wonderful when we get to the end of the show we're going to make sure that people know how to get in touch with you same thing with
23:18
alva and same thing with our next author as well and again i just want to show everyone
23:23
a copy of the book because this is one of the books that is in the three pack that we're going to be giving away to one lucky person they're
23:30
going to get a all three books as a gift so i'm going to drop you back down into the green
23:37
room and we are going to now take a trip
23:44
to kwanzaa because and i'm so excited about this i know very little about kwanzaa except that there is a similarity with
23:52
the festival of the lights and i know that karen is going to talk a little bit about the kinara that's what it's called it's
23:57
kind of looking like a hanukkah menorah and they both have candles very very cool
24:02
before we bring her in let me do a little short intro karen katz is the author and illustrator of
24:08
over 75 children's books and has won numerous awards karen's book has sold over get this tyra
24:14
10 million copies and multicultural picture books can be found in many schools and
24:20
libraries and it's one of the reasons that i really wanted karen to join us i
24:25
searched for her i found her and she doesn't normally do stuff like this but i'm glad that she did and we're
24:32
bringing her in to the show and here she comes
24:38
hey karen how you doing hello karen i'm good i'm good i'm good
24:43
so the canara it it sort of looks like a menorah it looks like a hanukkah menorah
24:49
it does it does i'll show you a picture this is the kanara and you can see if you remember what the
24:56
menorah looks like it also has candles going across it
25:02
seven eight eight eight candles uh because there's one for each day
25:07
and in the menorah there's an extra one but in the canara there's seven and um it's very similar that you
25:15
light a candle each night to represent something that's very important
25:21
so kind of cool that they're both similar um and in your handout that
25:27
we're going to be you know talking about after the story is there's some information about kwanzaa there's some activities art
25:34
activities that we're going to talk about so without further ado i'm going to put you up solo on the screen so that you can tell
25:40
your story my first kwanzaa here we go okay all right everyone i am gonna read
25:47
you this book my first kwanzaa
25:54
and some of the words are african words and i'm going to try
26:01
my best to pronounce them correctly hooray hooray it's time to get ready for
26:09
kwanzaa first we get the kinara it's made of shiny wood i put in seven candles
26:18
three red one black and three green we light a candle every
26:25
night to celebrate a special idea
26:33
mommy brings the ki komba the unity cup that's the unity cup
26:40
for each child we place one ear of corn called the mohindi
26:47
on a straw mat my brother adds apples yams nuts and squash the fruits and
26:54
vegetables the mazajo they remind us of the end of
27:00
the harvest and the beginning of the planting season
27:07
just like in africa a long time ago always in africa they
27:13
have a planting season just like we do here
27:22
means unity on the first day of kwanzaa neighbors come to visit and we ask
27:28
habari kani that means what's the news we laugh and talk and
27:35
sing we are friends and family
27:43
this one's a tongue twister koji chago
27:51
self-determination on the second day of kwanzaa i asked mommy to braid my hair in a fancy african way
27:58
it makes me feel proud
28:04
ojima working together on the third day of kwanzaa we plant flowers
28:11
in the lot next store we all work together to make our neighborhood pretty
28:23
ojama that means helping our neighborhood grow on the
28:29
fourth day of kwanzaa we buy special food for our celebration
28:34
we like to shop in our neighborhood stores to keep the businesses
28:49
that's what that means on the fifth day of kwanzaa i dream of what i can be
28:56
someday i will be an african dancer like my aunt tasha
29:02
and there they are they're dancing up a storm
29:09
komba means creativity on the sixth day of kwanzaa my cousin
29:15
and i paint a clay pot and we weave some baskets we will make our house beautiful
29:26
imani means faith on the seventh day of kwanzaa we light
29:32
the last candle to show our faith in ourselves and our family
29:38
and our future and our past
29:46
grandma gives us zawadi that means gifts for promises that we
29:52
have kept all year a handmade doll for me and an african shaker gourd for my
30:05
at last it's time for the feast we call it karamu
30:13
friends come over and everyone cooks delicious african food the house smells so good spicy chicken
30:20
and sweet yams we all take a sip from the unity cup and we share our wonderful meal
30:28
there's everybody together then we sing dance
30:36
play music and celebrate happy kwanzaa
30:45
the end i hope you like that i can't hear you
30:53
i put on mute i loved it the illustrations are gorgeous i would
30:59
say all the bright colors i love it i love all the bright colors thank you so much it's one of my favorite things
31:06
to do i do write my books and i do a lot of research but my favorite thing is to make the art
31:14
is to make these paintings that's my favorite thing just beautiful just beautiful and
31:20
there's an art project that is actually going to be attached to the download that when you go over to
31:26
yes i'm going to do it again once upon a storytime.live it's absolutely free
31:31
and it's a there's some projects in there for kwanzaa one of them i was fascinated by there's corn and you
31:38
talked about it in the story and it's about the kids collecting they get some corn and what do they do with
31:43
it they put some paint on it what do they do with that well you you can put the paint in a in a tray or you can you can use a
31:50
cookie cookie tray you know and you can put some paint in there
31:56
um and then you roll the corn in the paint and then when you roll it
32:02
on the paper it's going to make a really pretty design and then write your name and that's your design
32:09
and you can write you can do a lot of different colors on it not too many not
32:16
not too many karen thank you so much for sharing your story drop you down i want to do that art
32:23
project i do oh my gosh so do i so do i for those of you who are watching
32:30
going oh my gosh i want to get a copies of these books i i i'm hoping i win it but maybe i won't win it but i still want to go get copies
32:37
of the book and we're going to show you right now how you can do that um in in the chat you're gonna see a link that
32:43
goes over there to go over to the kids corner all of these books are there for you to
32:48

32:55
grammy and me it's a beautiful book we really encourage you to go pick these up i tyra i don't think there's anything
33:01
better than reading to our children right oh reading is so important and you know what i love about
33:06
all the books that we've read today whether it was a kwanzaa christmas or
33:11
hanukkah they all have similarities so i think it's important to keep in mind when you're learning about all of these
33:17
different traditions and cultures is that they all have similarities family values was i think the main one
33:25
that everyone absolutely and i know how important i celebrate hanukkah and it's just my husband and i now but we light
33:32
the menorah every night i'm making latkes this year i'm gonna make them outside guys because it smells
33:38
you know the oil and the potatoes and it stinks up the whole house so i'm gonna make them outside and i
33:44
might eat you know i might even send a recipe out if you guys are interested one of the things that we told you we
33:49
were gonna do today and this is my little surprise is we're going to show you how to make candy dreidels
33:54
um and so what i'd like to do right now is show you the instruction and that instruction list is
34:01
going to be over there's a picture that's going to be in the comments and you're going to know you need these three ingredients you need
34:06
marshmallows you need chocolate kisses and you also need licorice how bad can
34:12
that possibly be so i'm going to show people right now you want to take a marshmallow right
34:20
you want to take a little piece of licorice if you like black licorice do black licorice like red licorice and
34:26
you're going to screw it in to the top that's the top of the dreidel
34:31
and then there's nothing better than candy kisses so what i do is i take the candy kiss
34:37
and then i take my a toothpick or fingernail or something and i scratch the bottom to make it
34:42
all sticky why because we're going to take that candy kiss and we're going to stick it to the
34:50
bottom of the dreidel and you now have candy dreidels the thing with candy
34:56
dreidels are though is that they don't last very long because we end up
35:02
eating them and that's another tradition we saw in all of those books everyone loves to eat on the holidays oh
35:09
i want to make some candy dreidels as well i love candy how fun is that
