0:00
hello everyone Karen Glasser here and
0:04
welcome to minding your mental health
0:05
I'm here with my co-host and Son Rob
0:08
Glasser good morning Rob good morning or
0:10
afternoon I think it's afternoon
0:13
um so on minding your mental health we
0:16
talk about the topics that shape mental
0:18
health today we teach the importance of
0:20
inclusion and share why we should be
0:22
kind so whether you're here live doesn't
0:25
matter we love you make sure you know
0:27
where you're tuning in from so today
0:30
even though I'm talking really really
0:32
the show is all about going
0:35
so Rob what are we talking about I'm
0:40
um all right guys so a few weeks back we
0:42
talked about enjoying the uh presence
0:45
and this kind of goes with that form
0:48
um something that is very popular on
0:50
YouTube is called slow living and it's
0:52
basically taking every moment of time
0:54
and using everything to your best
0:56
advantage or full advantage I should say
0:59
not taking too much care now that sounds
1:01
kind of weird and boring but it kind of
1:03
has a good back story as far as slowing
1:07
down so slowing down in terms of
1:10
clinical words according to many
1:13
psychologists it means just taking
1:15
enough time away from your schedule
1:19
um in this particular case the article I
1:21
read from says take mini bricks uh it
1:24
doesn't have to be very long it could be
1:26
anywhere between two and five minutes
1:28
and this by itself does just as well as
1:31
your rest periods so this obviously is
1:34
not in lieu of getting very sleep or
1:38
obviously you know yeah
1:40
testing what are they suggesting in the
1:42
next two to five minutes so there's
1:44
actually a few things and I think we're
1:46
going to kind of see because I know we
1:47
wrote down some on our script so let's
1:48
see what they say and see if it Compares
1:50
with what we talked about and see what
1:52
what they have so their first example is
1:55
progressive muscle relaxation I learned
1:57
this from my therapist not a big fan to
2:01
um it's basically the tensing and
2:03
untensing of your muscles from head to
2:05
foot you have to be very in the moment
2:07
and focused and you know me I have ADD
2:09
focus is not my friend but what it does
2:13
is it helps to relieve any physical
2:16
stress or tension that's in your uh body
2:19
this then in part should if done
2:22
correctly uh make you a little uh a
2:25
little happier a little um make you feel
2:27
better a little bit right
2:30
um so this is one you can do and again
2:32
no products involved it's just you and
2:34
yourself and you basically stand or I
2:38
guess theoretically sit as well and each
2:40
individual you can either go from foot
2:42
to head or head to foot and you just
2:44
tense and untense as you go again I'm
2:47
not a fan I've done it it kind of hurts
2:50
more I might be over tension which could
2:54
um but I can see how this could be a
2:57
interesting meditation if you're not
3:00
into just a regular I've done you know
3:02
I've done something similar to that but
3:04
not the 10 sensing but more focusing and
3:07
feeling like the the feeling of warmth
3:10
or whatever as I work my way down from
3:12
my head all the way to my toes so you
3:14
focus on oh okay yeah and you focus on
3:16
your you know your face and you relax
3:17
your cheeks and you do all that stuff I
3:20
think I would probably be like you with
3:21
the tensing I probably would overdo it
3:23
because I'm an overachiever like you are
3:25
so now it does feel good in some parts
3:29
like when I do to my hands and my arms
3:30
it's sore but then the feelings subside
3:33
and you actually kind of feel good on
3:35
your arms and legs especially when you
3:37
wake up it's kind of fun but yeah I I've
3:40
heard the way you do it I think also my
3:41
therapist told me about that it's more
3:43
of a uh kind of thought process but
3:45
again that's such a vague idea for me
3:47
I'd be I wouldn't have no idea what I'm
3:50
number two however I think everybody can
3:53
get into here we're going to talk more
3:54
about this on Thursday as well uh pop on
3:58
um it doesn't have to be something
3:59
you're necessarily into
4:02
um I have a select list of songs some
4:07
um and those songs just kind of take me
4:10
um I will admit I love listening to
4:11
theme songs to my favorite anime back
4:13
there which is hilarious but it makes me
4:15
feel good and that's what matters and
4:17
the thing is is it's not so much what
4:19
you like it's that your brain is allowed
4:21
to kind of run wild and resets itself so
4:25
while you're having fun I didn't
4:27
actually know this until I read this
4:28
you're actually putting a factory reset
4:30
like you would on your computer right on
4:32
your brain right so you're not only
4:34
enjoying the music but you're actually
4:36
kind of letting it recharge and repair
4:39
for a minute kind of kind of cool yeah
4:44
excuse me number three uh breath work so
4:48
the interesting part on this that I
4:49
wanted to point out here is they
4:51
actually have ways to do it depending on
4:53
what you're feeling if you're feeling
4:54
anxious or stressed you want to actually
4:58
and I believe that's probably because
4:59
you are releasing more however if you're
5:02
feeling tired or you need to up a boost
5:04
then hold the inner hair
5:08
which I believe just kind of tricks your
5:11
brain and gets your blood flowing a
5:12
little bit too right and this one I've
5:14
done many times uh whether on purpose or
5:16
subconsciously whether just sitting in
5:18
front of the uh um meditation video or
5:22
just sitting in bed or somewhere for a
5:23
minute and letting myself
5:25
it redirects your your thoughts exactly
5:28
and it takes little to no time I can do
5:31
my breath work in about five minutes or
5:35
um again it's on a race I'm not saying
5:36
you have to do it in five minutes
5:38
um but it's just something very easy to
5:40
do and it's something that for I who's
5:42
not always down for the videos I see
5:44
breath work is something that I can
5:46
pretty much get into no matter what
5:48
because it's you know it's something you
5:50
do regularly your brain and your heart
5:52
are now naturally breathing why not let
5:55
it work a little more as far as your
5:57
internal not just for your physical
6:00
organs I don't know all that so
6:03
it's kind of interesting one right there
6:05
number four in childhood or an or find a
6:09
new one I kind of like the first part
6:10
engage your childhood activity
6:12
this is one of those things where you
6:14
just have to go and obviously depending
6:15
on where you live any equipment you have
6:17
will obviously say what you can and
6:18
cannot do but you know for instance uh
6:21
being a boy scouts I do a lot of hiking
6:23
so hiking could be one
6:25
um I apparently swam is according to you
6:28
so swimming could be one not that I I
6:30
don't know but um you know I was outside
6:33
collecting rocks and flowers stuff like
6:35
that so whatever it was that you did or
6:39
if you really can't think of a good
6:40
childhood one then yeah make one up pick
6:42
a hobby that maybe you've ever tried for
6:44
anything I keep telling you when you
6:45
know when we get to our new place I want
6:47
to get into gardening never gardened
6:48
before but it looks really fun I see a
6:50
lot of videos I see a lot of stuff so
6:54
um I my assumption is when they say
6:56
childhood it's something to kind of
6:57
revert yourself to the happy times but
7:00
again I think in general just doing a
7:02
fun activity childhood or not right
7:04
exactly and I'm doing what you did I
7:07
mean I I planted a garden over the
7:09
um oh that's right yeah it's amazing
7:12
because I'm the one who walks around
7:13
saying I have a brown thumb well I
7:15
apparently I don't they're still alive
7:17
the flowers are growing and I have
7:21
Rosemary but it was very relaxing I have
7:24
to tell you putting my hands into the
7:26
the dirt and and you know what do they
7:28
say tilling the soil and and putting all
7:31
this out there and planting it you feel
7:32
like you're creating life or extending
7:34
life and it was really cool I really
7:36
enjoyed it I think so there you go other
7:39
than the you know I'm touching dirt part
7:40
it sounds like a good time uh no I'm
7:43
just kidding uh no actually and I saw
7:44
what you showed me the uh there was
7:46
again all that stuff it actually that
7:48
I'll be intrigued to see what it looks
7:50
like when it comes full and actually for
7:52
those who are in winter right now there
7:54
are a set of seeds you can actually
7:56
plant and by March or April they bloom
8:00
so they're actually supposed to be
8:01
planted in the cold that way they bloom
8:03
well in the spring right I think they're
8:06
bulbs some of them are bulbs yeah
8:08
they're flowering kind of you know some
8:10
of that so uh number five cozy up with a
8:13
good book you can ask uh Krista uh
8:17
probably the easiest thing to do for
8:18
anybody because you probably have at
8:20
least one or two lying around uh read a
8:22
book you can do what I do read a article
8:25
on something uh I'll watch the History
8:27
Channel show and go that's kind of cool
8:28
hop on the computer hop on my phone and
8:31
read an article about whatever it was
8:35
um again I go with the vague I don't you
8:38
know a lot of people will say you know
8:40
read the motivational book read the
8:41
whatever if that's your Forte sure go
8:44
for it but a lot of people don't like
8:46
that so I would just say pick something
8:47
you like I like doing the historical
8:50
research other people don't I'm weird
8:54
um you know Chris that mainly has her
8:56
her fiction she has her Kindle she has
8:58
we have these books we have the books
8:59
and I do personal development I have so
9:02
many personal developers there you go so
9:03
that I don't even remember how to read a
9:06
fiction book because it's like I'm so
9:08
used to learning something that I read
9:10
that when I read Fiction it's like I'm
9:13
not learning anything here I'm just
9:15
hearing a story so it's interesting I
9:17
like nonfiction I like as you do
9:19
historical research you like yeah I mean
9:21
I like learning about the you know
9:23
history science stuff I mean I like a
9:24
good fiction too as well but yeah you
9:26
just you pick up something you want to
9:27
read if you're a newspaper person read
9:30
the newspaper and you know Rob I've
9:32
heard a lot of people say well I don't
9:34
know I'm not a good reader and I say
9:36
start slow do 10 pages get in ah yes
9:40
yeah right do 10 pages and that's how I
9:42
actually started reading again because I
9:44
had I stopped reading and I started
9:46
reading again you do I do I start off
9:48
with I'm gonna do 10 pages and before I
9:50
know it I am deep into it and I am
9:52
continuing to read so it's a great it's
9:55
a great Habit to to discover I think
9:56
yeah uh number six put that sniffer to
10:00
work just like music and hearing uh
10:03
makes a good a good smell uh one of
10:06
their actually uh ideas of this kind of
10:08
word I believe orange actually is good
10:10
for the sinuses but they said you can
10:12
actually put an orange in your shower
10:14
and the smell from the or I I wouldn't
10:16
do that but the smell from the orange
10:18
actually relieves a lot of uh right the
10:22
heat activation yeah but it also gives
10:25
you a pleasant thought process well
10:27
interesting um you know and again if you
10:30
you've probably heard about it you know
10:32
juice the orange it's got a different
10:35
um people do that with uh with apples
10:37
with um uh whatever B the orange feel
10:44
yes that's weird but yes exactly exactly
10:48
um but yeah a good smell will put you in
10:49
the mood maybe it's cookies maybe it's
10:52
you know I don't like the rain but some
10:54
people do like that smell
10:56
um maybe it's the forest I mean fine to
10:59
scent and funny enough people bottle
11:01
everything so if you can't go out and
11:03
find it pick it up at Target because
11:06
it's probably there in some sort of Jar
11:08
I like lavender I'm a lavender girl the
11:11
aromatherapy stuff yeah exactly diffuser
11:14
and I have one in here and one in our
11:16
bedroom and I have lavender lavender is
11:18
very soothing but for those of you who
11:19
don't like lavender me you like the the
11:22
Christmas scent because you want to have
11:23
Christmas all year long you can put that
11:25
in there as well or you know interesting
11:28
and it keeps your house smelling nicely
11:30
and you're right it soothes you the
11:32
minute I start smelling it the aroma I
11:35
just kind of go ah and that's what and
11:37
it works it works double it helps you
11:39
feel good and it helps you feel good
11:40
right good exactly and the last one on
11:43
here for them is move your body uh you
11:45
know me I exercise at least three times
11:47
a day the end of the day we do the cool
11:49
down exercises but the beginning of the
11:51
days we do our you know more intense
11:54
ones uh but again same thing uh with the
11:58
uh you know being outdoors doing the
12:00
activities moving your body exercising
12:03
you feel good yeah you look good you
12:06
know you feel good up here all that
12:08
stuff matters together so slowing down
12:10
and it's funny because that's how
12:12
something's slow usually the exercise is
12:13
pretty fast paced but it's the after
12:15
effect it's the you know
12:17
go down you know we stretch every night
12:21
same type of thing you know if you guys
12:23
are too if any if you're tuning in live
12:24
right now and you have a comment want to
12:26
share with us go right ahead put it in
12:28
the comments and if if you're here on
12:29
replay also make sure to put in the
12:31
comments because we will go back and
12:32
check and see who's who's commenting on
12:34
all of these and we're talking about
12:36
learning to slow down today and I'm
12:38
laughing because I talk really really
12:40
fast and as I'm saying we're going to
12:43
I think I need to learn to slow down
12:48
um well I'm looking at the list we have
12:50
and I'm pretty sure I mean I think most
12:52
of the stuff they wrote down we wrote
12:53
down too so great minds think alike
12:55
apparently the only thing that I saw
12:56
differently was the meditation but we
12:58
kind of talked about that as well
12:59
mindfulness goes with that
13:02
um I don't know I'm out of ideas on mine
13:04
do you think about anything else yeah
13:05
actually I'm gonna throw one hey Kathy
13:09
perfect time oh perfect time
13:12
this is the time of year that we all get
13:14
really really really stressed one of the
13:20
Robin she's an amazing author and an
13:22
amazing motivational uh speaker and she
13:24
has gone through she has anxiety she has
13:26
all these things and she talks about
13:28
something called the five second rule
13:30
that will stop you in your in your in
13:33
your you know in your path and so when
13:36
you're feeling stressed and you really
13:37
realize that you need to just slow down
13:39
what she says is to count backwards from
13:41
five to one five four three two one and
13:45
then go so no matter what it is so if
13:48
you're if you're in the urugu like going
13:50
fast fast fast and you know you need to
13:51
slow down try it count backwards and
13:54
then take a deep breath what it is it's
13:57
a pattern uh interrupt
14:00
so wherever you were it totally slows
14:03
you down if you haven't read Mel Robbins
14:05
go check her out she's amazing
14:07
um and she talks about the five second
14:08
rule now Rob I'm gonna throw out a funny
14:10
for all of our viewers so when you were
14:12
younger and we went to a party and there
14:16
was a humongous bowl of salad on the
14:19
table and the the bowl tipped over onto
14:22
the floor so the salad was everywhere
14:24
and you were hysterical you literally
14:27
shouted out as it fell five second rule
14:29
because apparently you can anything has
14:33
a five second rule you were literally
14:35
telling people if you as long as it
14:36
wasn't there for more than five seconds
14:37
it was okay to eat now knowing how we
14:40
are today can you imagine even saying
14:43
that or doing that not so much right ew
14:52
so we're going to share something
14:54
um we've put together some cool
14:59
so when you're living in the now and
15:01
when you're slowing down another good
15:03
thing to do is take your Journal out and
15:04
write down something that you are
15:11
so we have three different books if you
15:13
go over two hold on let me put this up
15:16
here if you go over to
15:18
miningyourhealth.com it's free it's a
15:20
free it actually it's not free these are
15:22
not free right these are not no these
15:24
are from my store these are this one
15:26
sorry we're going to give you a freebie
15:27
in just a second these are not free but
15:29
they're also not very expensive as well
15:31
go on over to alteredunivers.live
15:33
forward slash shop you're going to see
15:34
three different versions of the journal
15:36
finding your passion love yourself and
15:38
the importance of now specifically go
15:40
get that one this importance of now and
15:43
there's some other really cool items on
15:44
there as well so just added a water
15:46
bottle this morning so you know check it
15:49
out guys check it out
15:51
Rob any last minute thoughts we can
15:53
share with our audience in terms of
15:58
uh well it's funny we said that because
16:00
we kind of like that's that was the
16:01
other show but apparently it's the same
16:03
show so we're doing our repeat no
16:08
just enjoy the uh enjoy the moment enjoy
16:15
take a time or uh take the time to enjoy
16:18
the view I know that's a really bad you
16:20
know and the reason why we named this
16:23
show slow down because it was a song
16:25
running through our head and Rob before
16:26
we went live she said he said are you
16:28
going to sing it yes of course I am of
16:30
course I am slow down don't move too
16:34
gotta make the morning last I'm
16:37
embarrassing my son oh my gosh okay I'm
16:40
I'm totally gonna stop
16:42
go out guys we're really happy that you
16:44
joined us today choosing us as your
16:46
viewing today really makes us feel good
16:49
because we know that you have a choice
16:50
so go out give somebody an awesome day
16:53
because we're going to see you next time
16:55
on the next minding your mental health
16:57
see you later everyone bye
