today's episode of minding your mental
0:03
health we talk about mental health the
0:05
importance of inclusion we share why we
0:07
should be kind we hope to see you each
0:10
and every week as we talk about the
0:11
topics that are shaping mental health
0:13
today
0:14
our topic today is about the connection
0:16
between social media and mental health
0:19
so whether you're here live
0:21
or on replay
0:22
let us know where you're tuning in from
0:25
how you doing today rob
0:28
not too bad it hasn't reached 110 yet so
0:31
you are good
0:33
before so
0:34
yeah it's amazing what what becomes okay
0:37
when we say it's only a hundred and it's
0:39
comfortable out there right
0:41
all right um
0:43
we have a this is an important topic
0:45
that we're going to talk about and um
0:47
it's about social media and so we're
0:49
going to start from a historical
0:51
perspective
0:52
so why don't we just jump in and talk
0:54
about um social media and when it
0:57
started i mean
0:58
for those of you who are watching tuning
1:00
in right now and i see we have a couple
1:02
people who are tuning in let us know
1:03
where you're tuning in from
1:05
um when we think when we say social
1:07
media many of us say well that's
1:09
facebook or social media is
1:12
this so rob let's talk about
1:14
historically where where um social media
1:16
started because it didn't just start
1:18
yesterday
1:19
no
1:20
uh well coming at it from a kind of
1:22
hatred against it but i will do the
1:24
kindest i can towards the history um so
1:26
apparently this started back in 1997 so
1:29
do the math
1:30
that is a fairly long time i can't do
1:32
the math so i will let you guys
1:34
um i'm gonna really only do two because
1:37
these are the two that i know most of
1:39
the first one i learned through you
1:42
and through krista
1:44
linkedin so that one came about 2002
1:47
um the numbers on this particular graph
1:50
go
1:52
to
1:53
almost 800 million last year uh from
1:57
09 being at only
1:59
42. so that has jumped quite a bit
2:03
keep in mind however 99 if not 100 of
2:05
the people on there are mostly business
2:07
people uh this is a
2:10
a business platform it's more of a
2:12
platform
2:14
i mean it is cool though because you
2:15
know i've read some articles i get to
2:17
learn some things
2:20
now the second one that i use uh from 06
2:24
is twitter
2:25
um according to this though however it's
2:26
not as hot as it was numbers-wise
2:29
apparently in 2017
2:32
their numbers went from i guess like a
2:34
15 billion to four so they've lost
2:38
um but for those who use it
2:41
um you'll know that it's a
2:44
conversation piece
2:45
um
2:46
and it is
2:50
it's cool for a lot of things you can
2:52
look at pictures you can chat you can
2:54
make new friends if you want right
2:57
um and those are the two that i only do
3:00
now for personal reasons
3:02
but those two are very different but one
3:04
the same because linkedin can also be
3:06
said as a good conversational piece
3:08
if you are connecting
3:10
b2b
3:11
right exactly so let's flesh that out a
3:14
little bit so
3:15
um linkedin as you said is very much
3:18
a business platform and what that means
3:21
is is that if you go over to linkedin
3:23
you're gonna see a lot of business
3:24
owners right they're there whether
3:26
they're entrepreneurs small business
3:27
owners there's corporations people go
3:29
there if they're looking for a job
3:31
they can find it with people that are
3:33
looking for
3:34
people to to staff so that you know that
3:37
a lot of people are just on linkedin
3:39
they don't do any other social media in
3:41
fact i think that there would be some
3:43
that would say that linkedin is not
3:44
technically a social media platform
3:46
right
3:47
um twitter obviously i mean i use that i
3:50
talk i talk about twitter and i made you
3:52
laugh yesterday rob twitter is sort of
3:53
like being at a bar
3:55
and why do i say that well lots of noise
3:58
right a lot of conversations going on
4:00
all around you and you can either jump
4:02
into the conversation
4:04
or step away because it's too noisy we
4:06
also have facebook and we have youtube
4:09
and we have instagram and we have tick
4:12
tock and we have pinterest
4:14
there used to be friendster and krista
4:17
said you know she thinks social media
4:19
she immediately thought of myspace which
4:21
i believe it's still around but i don't
4:24
think it's obviously used as much as
4:27
some of these other platforms and also
4:29
facebook we kind of like want to say
4:30
facebook is kind of like for the older
4:32
people at this point the younger
4:34
generation has moved away
4:36
so
4:37
it's been around for quite a while
4:39
friendster was the very first one so if
4:41
you remember friendster and you're
4:43
tuning in right now or even on replay
4:45
raise your hand and say i remember
4:47
friendster i actually had an account i'm
4:49
not one of them i never had a friendster
4:51
account i think it's interesting though
4:53
so
4:54
let's now kind of dive into this whole
4:57
social media thing and why
4:59
and what we can do to make it healthier
5:02
for for each of us
5:04
so
5:04
the first thing that i want to kind of
5:06
encourage everyone to do is pick the one
5:08
that works for you um are you in it
5:11
because you are
5:12
staying in touch with your family or you
5:15
want to see cute little dog pictures or
5:17
you want everyone to see what you ate
5:19
last night
5:21
that might be a good place for you to
5:22
join on facebook but
5:26
maybe not right
5:27
if you're there for business then you
5:30
certainly you can use facebook for
5:32
business because there's an ad program
5:34
on there so if you want to promote your
5:35
business and in fact i know a lot of
5:37
businesses myself included that use
5:39
facebook for business and in fact it's
5:40
the only reason why i'm on it to be
5:42
honest same thing for instagram if
5:44
you're a woman
5:46
and you
5:48
uh want to be involved in a social media
5:50
platform you might want to check out
5:52
pinterest pinterest is very female
5:54
centric that means when it first started
5:56
i don't know if anyone's listening right
5:57
now but i remember distinctly going to
6:00
pinterest and looking for
6:01
clothing like what should i wear what's
6:04
a good social you know like a good party
6:07
outfit that kind of thing so there's
6:08
different kinds of social media
6:10
platforms to do different things the
6:12
most important thing though is to figure
6:13
out why you're using it if it's just for
6:15
social then you probably don't even want
6:17
to be on linkedin if it's just for
6:18
social and you just want to engage with
6:20
your relatives and whatever you're
6:21
probably just going to pick one or two i
6:23
mean that that really is the reality of
6:26
it
6:27
so rob you you made a point of saying
6:30
that you use twitter
6:31
and i know you've said to me in the past
6:33
one of the reasons you like about
6:34
twitter is that you can block people you
6:37
don't want to see
6:39
right
6:40
yeah i mean caveats all this i will piss
6:44
off a lot of people i hate social media
6:45
to begin with there's no reason to be
6:48
doing it
6:49
if i had to pick the lesser of both
6:51
evils
6:54
twitter is
6:56
fairly easy
6:57
to use um
6:59
when i see myself scrolling through dog
7:01
pictures as cute as it is
7:03
that's when you put the phone down and
7:05
go do something else
7:07
i love looking at this stuff but at the
7:09
same time
7:11
yeah you know um yeah if i had to pick
7:15
something to use
7:18
i guess that would be twitter
7:20
right and it's funny you know
7:22
obviously we're of different ages you
7:24
know i'm in my 60s 60 i'm going to be 66
7:27
you're in your late 30s or your mid-30s
7:29
and different strokes for different
7:31
folks right you like certain things um i
7:33
like certain things i actually jumped
7:35
into tick-tock
7:37
which i find very funny because um
7:40
i'm not even exactly sure what tick-tock
7:42
does but it's but it has video and i
7:44
happen to be a big huge lover of video
7:46
so i do my stuff over there so what i'm
7:48
going to say right now is do as i say
7:51
not as i do
7:52
that's the first thing because i will
7:54
say you don't have to be on every
7:56
platform
7:57
but i am and i do it though because of
7:59
business and i'm very clear about that
8:02
if i wasn't doing business i would not
8:04
be doing this at all so i'm with you on
8:05
that a hundred percent so let's get some
8:08
tips for our viewers i mean the first
8:10
thing that i always suggest is
8:12
you know schedule your social media time
8:15
literally say i'm going to do social
8:16
media for this half hour in the morning
8:18
and that means i'm going to scroll i'm
8:20
going to put some likes i'm going to put
8:21
some comments and i'm going to do it
8:22
later on set limits for yourself because
8:25
what happens is is that we go down the
8:28
rabbit hole and one minute it's two
8:31
o'clock and the next minute it's five
8:33
o'clock and how did that happen if
8:36
you're tuning in right now has that ever
8:37
happened to you will you go down the
8:39
rabbit hole let us know what some of
8:41
your favorite social media platforms are
8:44
if you have them or let us know if you
8:45
don't use social media clearly you use
8:48
something because you're watching us
8:49
somewhere whether it's on youtube or on
8:52
facebook or wherever but let us know
8:53
what you like and what you tune into
8:56
there are some positive things though
8:58
about social media
9:00
i know that's hard to believe
9:02
but there is because social media helps
9:04
you to build relationships specifically
9:06
in business um twitter when you're on
9:09
twitter rob have you made some
9:10
relationships with other people who are
9:12
interested in the same thing that you're
9:14
interested in
9:16
um
9:18
i was actually going to tag out for this
9:20
one because to be honest with you the
9:21
relationship part
9:23
to me it's everything talking and
9:25
relationship i haven't met anybody that
9:27
i would personally go do anything with
9:29
right but do comment other people's
9:31
posts
9:33
and do that so i don't know if i'm the
9:35
best on this one because
9:38
i i don't care for that at all
9:41
so uh michelle hey michelle nice to see
9:43
you on um
9:45
she only uses them for business i'm with
9:47
you on that i'm with you on that um i
9:49
think it's become a rather big challenge
9:51
at this point um krista says i love the
9:54
idea of setting specific times any down
9:56
time it's like open social media and
9:59
scroll um so yeah i mean i can go down
10:02
the rabbit hole even people that i would
10:04
have sworn would never have done this
10:05
ever they go down the rabbit hole too
10:08
only because you just kind of get stuck
10:10
and you get sucked in
10:12
um but social media and i get it rob i
10:14
mean for you this doesn't work but for
10:16
many people it does make it easy to find
10:18
groups of like-minded people and make
10:20
new friends now that can also be a
10:22
negative thing where you find a group of
10:23
people that you don't want to be
10:24
friendly with
10:25
uh michelle says um yeah very protective
10:28
what i consume and let in a hundred
10:30
percent i i am with you on that 100
10:34
um
10:35
so
10:37
backing up
10:38
make sure you know why you're using it
10:40
right are you using it for business or
10:42
are you using it just to stay connected
10:44
with somebody and if you're just going
10:46
to use it stay connected then find the
10:47
platform that everybody in your social
10:49
community is using and stay on that
10:51
right so
10:53
um
10:54
i think that we want to prioritize our
10:57
real life right because social media i
11:00
don't know about you rob it's not real
11:01
life it's it's not real life it's it's a
11:03
lot i will be happy to take off from
11:05
here um go for it two things that i
11:08
would recommend anything
11:10
social media or whatever
11:12
uh put into perspective what you got to
11:14
get done what should be done
11:16
and leave the rest
11:19
on the sideline um of course every video
11:22
says at the end of the day put it down
11:24
which is obviously
11:26
very good
11:27
but generally that goes into the
11:28
prioritizing um
11:31
pick
11:32
what you got to do now like i do my two
11:34
videos daily so when i'm on youtube
11:38
morning afternoon
11:40
pretty much done
11:41
throughout the day if something crosses
11:43
my mind if i get a good idea i'll scroll
11:46
in pop something in my notes but again
11:48
that's my notes not my social media so
11:51
there's a difference there right um
11:53
but i would say of anything that has
11:55
been said so far it's the priority
11:59
if you can't distinguish
12:02
then you might have a problem
12:04
right
12:05
with what you're doing
12:06
oh my gosh that's like right on
12:09
the nose on that so
12:11
you don't want social media to take away
12:13
your focus from the important important
12:15
parts of your life so one of the things
12:17
you can do and this is a great tip on
12:19
your phone
12:20
on your notifications let's say you have
12:22
apps on your phone for facebook and
12:23
pinterest and youtube whatever it is all
12:25
of those things you can identify how you
12:28
want to be notified so that's number one
12:31
like such an important tip i don't want
12:33
to be notified all day long that
12:35
somebody liked my post or shared my post
12:38
or did something or made a comment so i
12:41
don't have any notifications on my phone
12:43
at all i have to make the effort to go
12:46
in see what's going on and then log
12:48
myself out so i'm going to encourage
12:50
people get those notifications set up
12:51
what works for you now you might be kind
12:53
of person that wants to just have
12:54
notifications one time a day you can do
12:57
that so go ahead and set that up
12:59
um and also
13:01
next create a safe social media space
13:03
for yourself and rob you already said it
13:05
you know
13:06
unfollow those accounts
13:08
that you don't want to be with um you
13:10
know there's a lot of stuff going on in
13:12
social media today as we know and it can
13:14
it can cause a lot of things and a lot
13:16
of uncomfortable feelings that we don't
13:19
want to feel so you know what it's okay
13:21
unfollow somebody and guess what they
13:23
won't know the way these platforms work
13:25
you can unfollow somebody and they'll
13:27
have no idea so if you're one of those
13:29
people that is a pleaser like i am and i
13:31
go oh my gosh if i had friend them
13:33
they're going to not like me anymore
13:34
they're not going to know and it doesn't
13:35
matter and quite frankly it really
13:37
doesn't matter if they're not going to
13:38
like you anymore if you don't want to be
13:39
their friend it doesn't matter if they
13:41
don't want to be your friend either
13:43
so most importantly as you said rob at
13:47
the end of the day put it away
13:49
or in the middle of the day put it away
13:52
social media is not the be all and the
13:55
end all of things uh michelle says yep
13:59
agreed
14:00
oops same for your phone just as
14:02
disruptive as you let it be agreed and
14:05
you also said michelle notifications are
14:08
my gatekeepers i love that
14:10
they are notifications are definitely
14:13
a gatekeeper all right so as we end
14:15
towards the end of our show i want to
14:17
make sure that we let people know how to
14:20
connect with a resource if they're
14:22
having trouble um you can go check out
14:24
nami at
14:26
nami.org that's the national association
14:29
of mental
14:30
illness and you can also check out
14:32
nimh which is a governmental
14:35
organization which is the national
14:37
institute of mental health
14:39
and finally which this is pretty new
14:41
this is actually something that just
14:43

14:44
months and that is nine eight eight if
14:46

14:48

14:57
