0:01
hi everybody i'm mel greenberg and i'm
0:04
karen glasser and welcome to uncourt
0:07
life exposed in the most unexpected ways
0:10
where what you see is not always what
0:13
uncorked is proud to be on the
0:16
vitalscene network we love vitalscene
0:19
so what are we talking about today
0:22
spring cleaning to be specific and you
0:27
right but first but first we have to you
0:29
know we were talking about we don't
0:31
always have to drink alcohol right
0:33
and we don't we don't today we're
0:35
drinking um i'm drinking iced tea what
0:37
are you drinking an arnold palmer which
0:40
sugary version of iced tea it's lemonade
0:42
and iced tea and i just like that little
0:44
fresh touch of the lemonade so
0:48
and cheers to you all
0:53
so karen spring cleaning and that has
0:56
so many meanings and connotations is it
0:59
house cleaning is it i kind of looked at
1:02
it from the perspective of
1:04
cleaning my plate and my life right kind
1:07
of starting over new birth it's new
1:09
beginnings how about you um i i that as
1:14
well as very much the stuff that i clean
1:17
out so we cleaned our we're cleaning our
1:21
it doesn't feel good it does it feels
1:24
i don't know if it's the same in your
1:26
household but in my household we have
1:28
been schlepping the same boxes from
1:29
garage to garage to garage to garage
1:32
literally i think for 20 years
1:34
same and and what's ironic is that and i
1:37
can speak for you it's our husbands that
1:39
are the hoarders they have that there's
1:41
a reality show there how's their carters
1:46
but seriously my and about five or six
1:49
years ago i cleaned out our garage and i
1:52
was relentless and i'm very sentimental
1:54
there are things that will never leave
1:57
but i got rid of things that he over the
1:59
course of time would say no no no no you
2:01
can't get rid of that it's gone to this
2:03
day until he watches this show
2:05
he's not gonna know those things and i
2:07
don't even remember what it is is it
2:08
like that for you it's totally like that
2:10
for me uh you know and finally finally i
2:13
got i got michael to to agree to look in
2:16
the boxes and as he started looking the
2:18
boxes he realized oh i didn't even know
2:21
we still have this stuff yeah so i feel
2:24
like it's so cathartic my garage is
2:28
clean right now well don't you so i'm
2:30
that person who makes lists lists and i
2:33
get such satisfaction of crossing off
2:36
it's the same kind of thing it's like oh
2:38
i cleaned it's gone cleaning out
2:39
cupboards cleaning out closets you know
2:42
making room for new that's fun too well
2:44
that that's just that and and the other
2:46
thing is as we clear out
2:49
our stuff that we're clearing out can
2:53
and especially now i mean seriously this
2:55
is a time when when that should maybe be
2:58
a joyful experience right and and the
3:01
thought that at the forefront what can i
3:03
do how can i give up to others because
3:06
we're not using these things in our
3:07
garage as you said what for how many
3:09
oh it's it's embarrassing but you know
3:11
one man's trash is another man's
3:13
treasure absolutely more so now than
3:16
i agree i i totally agree i don't know
3:18
we're going to take i mean we had boxes
3:20
of pictures and slides and you name it
3:23
and we're going to digitize the entire
3:27
all the boxes all the boxes so how okay
3:30
i want to ask you because i i've toyed
3:34
but i really like the chemistry like
3:36
going through the photo albums
3:38
yeah so there's a digital photo they're
3:40
a digital photo i know and
3:43
or is it the same is it just like
3:46
personally too i need to step up and
3:48
well i know i'm i'm here to say if you
3:50
like your albums you should keep your
3:52
albums but i like the idea of i do a
3:54
digital and you can literally have the
3:56
pictures go and you can constantly
3:58
change them and all it's so the
4:01
technology is so amazing now you can
4:03
literally share your photos with other
4:05
people on their digital well we got
4:08
dean a beautiful large digital frame
4:12
from his office and i haven't i need i
4:14
have yet to download the pictures
4:16
but for that purpose and it can scroll
4:18
and you can constantly upload from yeah
4:22
it's so cool and you know what i think
4:24
it's one of the things that we have
4:26
in the store this month
4:28
the digital thing so go check it out
4:31
guys it's it's kind of cool it's kind of
4:32
a neat way to clean so the other thing
4:34
that happens during the spring thank god
4:40
finally see okay so and i'm in arizona
4:44
where we don't do that don't ask me why
4:46
but i i look to that time and i love
4:50
because when we spring forward i am on
4:52
the same time zone as you and when my
4:55
kids lived in california then i was on
4:57
their same time zone and i didn't have
4:58
to figure things out it's a little bit
5:00
easier yeah what is i i mean why does
5:03
arizona i don't know why don't you guys
5:05
do that i would i can't be more like you
5:10
i mean originally i think it had to do
5:11
with with farming and keeping the light
5:14
and having more light and and the
5:16
reasons that they did it right but none
5:17
of those things none of those things
5:19
apply i do miss i will say this because
5:21
we don't have the late late
5:23
light right that you guys do or that
5:25
anyone that does data right savings does
5:27
and and that's a nice thing that we
5:29
don't get truly i don't know
5:31
so i'm excited i'm truly excited that i
5:33
can finally put the clock back you know
5:35
to where it belongs and so we have
5:36
longer day daylight which i love i hate
5:40
it when it's i mean it's a strong word
5:41
hate but i do not like when it's dark at
5:48
well so we have it what we notice and
5:51
it's hard to get up and you know
5:53
we're both very early risers i think
5:55
part of that is desert life right but i
5:58
like to be up in it when it's darker
6:00
like now it doesn't get light until 5 36
6:03
i know so i'm up and it's pitch black
6:05
for a good hour and a half so you're
6:06
going to be happy yeah as things start
6:08
to change yeah i know i i like light and
6:11
i think that's also it helps my um
6:14
my feelings and you know that people
6:16
think yeah you know the light
6:19
but do you find that that in
6:22
like with the time changes and does that
6:24
kind of give you a feeling of of rebirth
6:27
that goes along with spring um maybe for
6:29
the first couple of days and then and
6:31
then i'm already back into this swing of
6:34
whatever time it really is but truly i
6:36
mean i think that it is part of the
6:37
whole spring thing it's something that
6:39
it's a it's something that happens in
6:42
so the the the uh time changes so
6:46
spring is here how are we coming out of
6:49
winter so i mean it's not just about the
6:52
well because we're still i mean well
6:54
it's been though did you notice we we
6:56
kind of look a little i got the memo
7:00
i think that coming out of winter
7:03
has been for the past two years
7:06
unprecedented so there's that yeah and
7:09
we we still aren't quite sure what that
7:11
looks like but also a desert dweller i
7:15
tend to layer and i tend to always be
7:17
cold so i layer things
7:19
and and that's fun fashion wise oh yeah
7:22
absolutely absolutely you know
7:24
where i was laughing because i literally
7:26
i'm in pants today and a long sleeve
7:28
shirt i was cold i had my jacket on
7:30
because it was cold and and it's going
7:33
to be 90 degrees at the end of the week
7:35
and i'm i can't wait most people go 90
7:37
degrees that's so hot and i'm like no i
7:39
can't wait i can't wait because this is
7:42
yeah i do like the cold but but i think
7:45
it's easy because we we know it's riding
7:48
like when we get a a deep rain day or a
7:50
really calm we do get snow in the well
7:52
we do in arizona i don't know about you
7:53
we don't get well we get snow in the
7:55
mountains yeah we do in tucson and right
7:57
and it's fun but i also know it's going
7:58
to be gone the next day so yeah yeah
8:03
yeah um the other thing i like during
8:05
the spring i don't do a lot of it
8:07
because i have a brown thumb
8:09
is gardening and in fact i have already
8:12
gone out and bought some lavender plants
8:15
because my understanding is lavender
8:18
but i never heard that yeah really yeah
8:20
but the bees like it so so
8:24
yeah yeah yeah but a gardening is
8:26
something i've always wanted to do and i
8:31
how to do it are you a gardener i am and
8:34
i love gardening and i do i love um
8:38
herbs and lettuce and i actually am
8:42
a specialist to create an organic
8:44
garden oh how cool because i want a
8:46
sustainable garden that i can and
8:48
nothing makes me happy or my kids laugh
8:51
you know snip my herbs pick my legs for
8:53
the evening's dinner there's just a
8:55
great joy in watching it and bringing it
8:58
and nurturing it through the growth
9:00
process and inside but i maybe would
9:02
suggest an indoor herb garden to start
9:05
and then you could kind of have to show
9:07
me i can do that because i i want to do
9:10
it i i have a desire to do it
9:13
my last two attempts were terrible
9:15
everything died i mean like
9:17
died a horrible death
9:19
and i i want to do it the right way it's
9:20
really fulfilling and it's it's
9:23
something that requires you to be
9:26
if you take the time to do that like i
9:28
will go out i talk to the plants and i
9:35
it's a bit meditative which is wonderful
9:38
for me it slows everything down and i
9:39
pay attention to what i'm doing just
9:41
kind of get lost in it and then you you
9:43
know you start with nothing
9:44
and then you get to see it that's true
9:46
you know become so much more and then
9:48
you get to enjoy the fruits of your
9:51
and that's really gratifying yeah i
9:53
think you would really enjoy it i i
9:55
think i will have to i will work with
9:56
you i think i will and i would love like
9:59
to know if you all want to email us and
10:03
come into spring and how what what it
10:05
means to you right right we i would love
10:07
to hear that so send us an email or um
10:12
i i'm karen at karengglaster.com
10:15
malamailmediallc.com there you go um let
10:18
us know let us know how you are entering
10:20
spring i do know that the it's it's the
10:22
hedgehog or the gopher
10:25
isn't it i don't know whatever that
10:27
animal is that came in
10:30
he came out we have six months we said
10:33
totally have six more weeks i do have a
10:36
desire though to i'm not gonna live off
10:37
the grid but i do have a desire to be
10:40
more self-sufficient and that's why the
10:41
gardening really um appeals to me yes
10:47
yeah i live off the grid that's
10:51
i read about it i do i do it's not yeah
10:56
i need running water and electricity
10:59
but i will i think knowing you as i do
11:01
that you would get a tremendous amount
11:04
comfort i'm looking satisfaction from
11:06
doing in a nightmare i think starting
11:11
in um that's our audience our
11:14
eight-legged audience
11:16
they're moaning and groaning and they're
11:17
happy for us i'm sure yeah you know the
11:20
other thing is is that i'm starting to
11:21
come out of my shell finally
11:23
i'm totally coming out of my shell which
11:25
means that i'm getting ready to travel
11:28
and so part of it i went and got my
11:33
i can't wait i'm planning on i'm
11:35
planning on getting out there and my dog
11:40
she's ready to go too get out of the
11:43
so this next thing is our life balance
11:45
wheel and we're just going to talk about
11:48
we don't actually have it with us right
11:51
but i noticed that it it really didn't
11:54
change that much yeah and i and i kind
11:55
of think that focusing on it
11:58
is why yeah um and i i and i noticed
12:01
that last month yeah
12:05
variation but very little very little
12:07
and it's kind of neat yeah well it
12:11
i was i don't know about you and i'm
12:13
trying to remember what yours look like
12:15
i have some areas where i'm i'm really
12:17
very comfortable and
12:18
i have some areas and not so much
12:21
and that's going up incrementally like
12:24
quarter inches very very small because
12:27
it takes time right to make changes yeah
12:29
the biggest one that that has changed
12:31
since i started it was
12:35
because that was something that i made a
12:36
priority priority for me right and that
12:38
sort of circles me back to cleaning
12:43
and i have a terrible time saying no
12:46
and and a beautiful word it is a
12:47
beautiful word and and what's more
12:49
beautiful is to do it in a way that
12:52
honors who you are where you are
12:55
and let go of things and it does make
12:57
room so organizing and getting things
12:59
done that i need to get done and more
13:00
importantly that i want to get done is
13:03
so much so much easier so that's been a
13:05
and you know one of the things and
13:07
that's you know that's that's an
13:11
prioritizing the stuff that we really
13:13
want to do in in the spring and
13:15
eliminating those things that we're
13:17
don't they don't resonate with us yeah
13:20
um and that's that's something that i'm
13:25
i'm working hard and saying no
13:27
do you has let me ask you has it always
13:31
have has that always been a challenge
13:32
for you oh yes because i want to say yes
13:35
to everyone and i want to please and i
13:37
want to i want to help people like
13:39
constantly so i say yes to everything
13:41
not anymore i have i literally stopped
13:44
before the words come out of my mouth
13:46
and i think to myself self is that
13:48
something you really want to do
13:50
that's really good and i actually am
13:52
writing about it and it will be up in
13:54
the blog um in the next few weeks about
13:58
your no yeah and and knowing that how to
14:01
handle that and and i've had to i've
14:03
worked with people and i've listened and
14:05
i've shared because it really is hard
14:07
and i always feel like i'm letting
14:12
most of the stuff i can do you can do
14:14
we're multifaceted we're our brains are
14:16
always working just because we can
14:18
doesn't mean we need to doesn't mean we
14:19
should or we should yeah
14:23
just to actually say the word no
14:25
sometimes it evokes mine
14:27
it's empowering sometimes it's guilty so
14:30
one of the things that i've learned how
14:31
to say is i like to give 100 of whatever
14:34
i'm doing of myself right and if i know
14:37
by saying yes to something i really
14:39
can't give 100 of myself that's actually
14:41
what i say you know what i really want
14:43
to give you the time and the energy that
14:46
this deserves and i don't have the
14:50
thank you for asking them that's
14:52
beautiful or i'll say
14:57
because it's not definitive right but
14:59
it's a gentle way it's a gentle way but
15:03
that way by saying i just can't give it
15:05
my all and i know how much you know
15:08
that you're going to get your all when i
15:11
and so when i say no so it's it's a
15:13
constant ever it's a constant it happens
15:17
and i think it's really important that
15:19
as we continue to age
15:21
that that we use our time as efficiently
15:26
emotionally gratifying ways in ways that
15:32
and satisfying and that we can follow
15:35
through right in the way and the way
15:36
that you just said that is i'm going to
15:38
kind of take that yeah and take that
15:41
i never want to hurt somebody's feelings
15:43
and i also don't want to feel guilty and
15:45
i found by doing that
15:47
it makes that person feel heard
15:50
that i acknowledged that they needed
15:53
and i just said i can't do it right now
15:56
or it's you're not gonna get a hundred
15:59
and they respect that and they really
16:01
respect that because and it's it keeps
16:03
me true to my word and so for me that
16:05
that has worked but it has been a long
16:09
i lose sleep when i have to say no to
16:11
somebody or when i want to step back
16:12
from something that i have said yes to
16:14
right that simply isn't working for me
16:17
yeah that's hard too because again i
16:20
don't want to let somebody down
16:23
for a myriad of reasons right this is
16:25
not right at this time and that's but
16:27
that's important too it's like we we
16:29
tried to play now we need to step back
16:32
and right now it's not okay but it could
16:35
be as you don't know so yeah i think
16:38
we have to be true to ourselves there's
16:40
no question about that yeah
16:42
you know we talked about the fact that
16:43
uncorked is on vital see we want to make
16:45
sure that people go check out all the
16:48
shows you guys not just this one if you
16:50
go to vitalscene.com forward slash watch
16:54
uncorked all of the shows are there yeah
16:57
go over there go binge watch tell us
16:59
which one spoke to you the most and i
17:02
think what i love about our shows is
17:06
try and touch and uncork
17:09
things that we're all feeling at this
17:11
time and this peak stage of life that
17:13
we're all living and
17:15
figuring our way through and like you
17:16
say like i mean it takes a long time to
17:19
get from a to to b to z to certain z
17:22
and and if when you watch the different
17:25
charges you can see that and you can
17:26
take something from it and that's really
17:27
what we hope that you're gaining
17:29
absolutely we also hope that you'll go
17:31
check out the uncork shop all you have
17:34
to do is go to www.uncorked.shop
17:39
really cool things in there this month
17:41
uh one is one of them is that picture
17:42
frame so we'll go check that one out
17:44
because i think that will
17:46
it's kind of a it's a cool thing to get
17:48
all your family involved with that and
17:50
all the pictures going on we have some
17:51
great stuff in there so go check it out
17:53
and see if there's something there that
17:55
just lights your fire and finally um
17:59
go check out the playlist mel has been
18:01
very busy so i have so much fun and i
18:09
over the years has inspired me or brings
18:11
back memories you know music is a memory
18:14
or what's that saying it's a memory or
18:18
back some place or forward and places
18:22
so a lot of the songs you will listen to
18:24
like you know back to the 70s and 80s
18:26
and i hope you enjoy it and then a lot
18:27
of new music and there's so many
18:29
incredible new artists oh i know i know
18:31
yeah so we're our current obsession is
18:33
teddy springs oh my god the guy is
18:35
amazing i know but the one thing i just
18:39
i i it's like i cringe because i wanted
18:41
it like when he got his eyelashes
18:42
tattooed i mean and i did have the i
18:45
have the eyeliner that's totally
18:46
different it's a little bit different i
18:47
just ache for him when i see it but i
18:49
just adore him his energy and his voice
18:52
and his lyrics oh and he came he came to
18:55
being in his last couple of years during
18:57
the pantheon and that's
18:59
