hello everyone karen glasser here
0:03
and mel greenberg and welcome to
0:06
uncorked
0:07
life exposed in the most unexpected ways
0:10
where you what you see
0:11
is not always what you get and today we
0:14
are having an
0:15
enlightening conversation that we are
0:17
calling should i stay
0:19
or should i go i don't know
0:22
should we stay or should we go vacation
0:26
versus vacation the world is opening up
0:28
and we're here to share our
0:30
distinct differences and approaches and
0:34
give you some great ideas and and
0:36
suggestions to get your summer off on
0:38
the good start
0:39
absolutely first we have
0:42
two cheers here so we're gonna just
0:45
cheers
0:47
i'm drinking i'm drinking um white claw
0:50
hard seltzer i know when you're sure
0:54
that's where the differences start
0:55
totally is where the differences
0:57
start um this is hard seltzer it's
0:59
natural lime i've already poured myself
1:01
a glass
1:02
and so we're going to just uh cheers to
1:06
and i am drinking a hugo spritz which i
1:08
first encountered staying at the belmont
1:10
in ravello italy
1:12
and it is the most refreshing to me it's
1:15
a little elder flower soda water ice
1:18
mint
1:19
lime and of course prosecco so you can't
1:22
go wrong
1:22
prosecco you cannot go wrong with
1:24
prosecco
1:27
and as a matter of fact we put that
1:29
recipe
1:30
into our uncorked kit and you can just
1:33
go you can go find it there
1:34
online bitly with a little slash
1:36
uncorked live
1:37
and you'll find the recipe in addition
1:39
to a bunch of really cool things
1:41
that go along with this show today so
1:45
just some housekeeping whether you're
1:46
here live or on replay make sure you say
1:49
hi
1:49
put it in the comments and tell us where
1:52
you're from because we'd love
1:53
to see you be introduced to you and
1:56
respond
1:57
to you so mel we're work literally it's
2:00
should we stay should we go vacation
2:02
versus vacation and we
2:04
were so fun to plan and talk about doing
2:08
and sharing with you all because i mean
2:11
once we got vaccinated
2:12
we were flying we were gone bags had
2:14
been packed they were never unpacked
2:16
we've been told
2:17
and we were out the door so i can
2:19
empathize with those who have other
2:21
circumstances
2:22
and karen you're going to kind of go
2:24
into that because it's not just
2:26
there's so many reasons that that lead
2:28
to one choice or another and and
2:29
it's important to to empathize and
2:31
respect those differences
2:34
but i'm i know you are and i'm actually
2:37
i think i'm going to live vicariously
2:39
through you
2:39
okay you're you've already been to
2:41
hawaii you've been
2:43
um multiple places in the country and i
2:45
know that you're probably
2:46
going to go to italy probably relatively
2:49
soon
2:50
yeah sooner than later um me not so much
2:53
even though i love italy and i would
2:55
love to go to italy i'm just not there
2:57
yet i'm just not quite comfortable
2:59
and i think that's where this whole
3:00
topic came up um is that
3:03
we how can how can we be so much alike
3:06
and yet
3:07
so different in the way we approach this
3:10
whole
3:10
thing right now right right and i think
3:12
that's where we are
3:14
globally you know the the the divisions
3:17
are are significant and but
3:19
so many factors as i mentioned play into
3:21
it whether
3:22
you may be taking care of elder family
3:24
members you may have a compromised
3:26
immune system or concerns or
3:28
you know what you're just more
3:30
comfortable at home and and even i went
3:32
through that
3:33
i who who at the drop of a hat will be
3:35
on a plane and always keep a bag packed
3:37
because i love
3:38
this planet of ours and and experiencing
3:40
every aspect of it
3:42
but the first time last year my first
3:45
trip back to i live in
3:46
southern arizona and my first trip back
3:48
to california where i'm from
3:50
i really experienced a sense of
3:52
vulnerability that
3:54
i had never gone through before and it
3:57
still settles within me
3:59
uncomfortably because you kind of it's
4:01
like i mean our world had changed these
4:03
past 14
4:04
15 months and that's never going to go
4:06
away so now it's a matter of
4:09
how do you navigate it how do you
4:10
navigate those those changes and and not
4:13
become you know
4:14
still be who you are and honor that
4:17
but also the fact that that it has
4:19
changed it's tricky stuff
4:21
it is very tricky stuff and it really
4:23
has changed and in my situation you know
4:25
my husband is a cancer survivor
4:27
and was still going through treatment
4:29
and so i was
4:31
neurotic literally to the point of i
4:33
don't think we left our house for a year
4:35
and a half
4:35
we never left our house we just now are
4:38
just starting to get out and in fact you
4:40
know i've been to the market twice
4:41
i know it sounds silly but it's we sound
4:44
silly
4:45
i mean that's the thing it's like we
4:46
have to really
4:48
kind of stop worrying about what
4:49
everybody else is thinking and do what's
4:51
right for us without
4:53
attempting to harm someone else
4:54
obviously but we have to live i'm a
4:56
cancer survivor
4:58
i know yeah but i wasn't going to treat
5:00
i mean i've already and i have friends
5:01
that were and they handled it much
5:02
differently so i think
5:04
that that those are profound
5:06
distinctions that need to be made and
5:07
respected absolutely
5:09
absolutely so we said nation versus
5:11
staycation
5:12
clearly i'm on the staycation side and
5:14
you clearly are on the
5:16
vacation side going out so let's talk
5:18
about where all those things might be
5:20
i mean there are locations we go local
5:23
we can go
5:24
more across the country usa mexico
5:26
hawaii which i said you've already done
5:28
north america and
5:29
international um oh scares me even to
5:32
say it but as i said i'm gonna
5:33
vicariously live through you
5:36
and then there's things like airbnb and
5:38
vrbo and short-term
5:39
rentals which i'm almost there and that
5:43
kind of thing because it's i you know i
5:45
think we we make up
5:46
stories right in our head that say well
5:48
that's okay
5:50
but it's not so in my head that's almost
5:52
okay because i can go in with my
5:54
things and clean stuff and i'm driving
5:56
there in my car how about you i mean are
5:58
you going to do any airbnbs or vr
6:00
we have done airbnb actually um through
6:03
this
6:03
and it's been a great experience and
6:05
what we have encountered through the
6:07
homes
6:08
there have been two instances and they
6:11
have they are taking such precautions
6:12
and
6:13
i don't know if it's corporate requiring
6:14
them to do so or it's an individual
6:16
choice but
6:17
we felt so secure and so safe in the
6:20
environment and the steps that they took
6:22
to provide
6:23
a venue that that you could feel safe in
6:26
so i would do that but you know
6:27
something else
6:28
that you might consider that i have
6:30
friends that are doing now is
6:32
rv i love rving so what's something that
6:35
people probably don't know about me is
6:37
we owned a fifth wheel
6:39
yeah and we owned it for 10 years and
6:42
i lived in southern california at the at
6:44
the time and we used to go to pismo like
6:46
six times a year and right on the beach
6:49
i
6:49
loved arvine but i'm now moving towards
6:51
the going to a hotel
6:53
i live in palm desert and our
6:54
anniversary is coming up so we've been
6:56
discussing maybe we're gonna go to one
6:57
of the casinos the resorts
6:59
that are five star resorts there are so
7:02
many great
7:03
woods in the valley too growing up in
7:06
san diego we spent a lot of time
7:07
in the coachella valley and one of my
7:09
favorite places is
7:11
ingleside inn and right off it's on
7:13
ramon i think right off palm canyon it's
7:15
got so much hollywood history and it's
7:17
charming and
7:18
you can really escape right now truly
7:20
right in our own backyard and especially
7:22
when you're living in a 120 degree
7:24
temperature
7:25
which is what we are i don't know how
7:26
hot it is by you but you have it we're
7:28
close we
7:30
so we're chasing you i used to say but
7:32
it's a dry heat not so much
7:34
and that does matter yeah it's kind of
7:37
humid right now so we're at so i'm
7:39
actually
7:40
now leaning towards we're going to go to
7:41
a resort and i'll get that information
7:43
from you after we
7:44
uh finish the show because that sounds
7:45
interesting tonight probably
7:47
totally sounds interesting yeah um as
7:49
you said camping glamping
7:51
so for those of you who um the idea of
7:54
being in a tent
7:56
like forget it you're not in a tent
8:00
you can glam i mean there are places out
8:02
there that have uh
8:03
prefab tents that are on platforms and
8:06
and they have
8:06
restroom you know the whole thing so
8:08
that's an option too i don't know if
8:10
i would done joshua tree it's too hot
8:13
right now as soon as things cool i am
8:15
up to driving they actually opened a
8:19
location here in tucson in the southwest
8:22
by the
8:23
part of the um saguaro national monument
8:26
area east or excuse me west of tucson
8:29
so i'm i'm dying to go out and try that
8:31
so it would be a staycation
8:32
yeah that would be a staycation um and
8:35
then we talked about
8:36
um travel options like taking something
8:40
rather than maybe just your car maybe
8:42
you get in a train
8:43
you get on a plane uh we said rv cross
8:46
or
8:46
cruises now that's my favorite kind of
8:49
travel is a cruise
8:51
but to be honest it feels like to get on
8:54
a ship right now you would literally
8:56
be you know um surrounded it's
8:59
already an issue on cruises you know
9:02
don't
9:03
touch the handles when you're walking
9:04
downstairs they have the
9:06
you know they've always had the
9:07
sanitizers when you walk into dining
9:09
here
9:09
even before right so that'd be something
9:12
i'd probably look into
9:13
once they've gotten this back under i
9:15
think the first cruise ship went out
9:17
uh this weekend very important excuse me
9:20
we were originally supposed to do
9:22
a cruise in sept uh
9:25
god maybe oh no it was actually going to
9:28
be in july what am i thinking but then
9:29
they
9:30
was with virgin and they extended
9:33
to september so i i don't know that
9:36
that's opened up and
9:37
it's changing daily because just
9:39
recently we heard that
9:41
um parts of australia good friends in
9:43
melbourne are
9:44
locking down again because various
9:46
strains are presenting
9:48
um and italy may shut down against i you
9:51
know it really is
9:52
california is now saying put your mass
9:55
back on
9:56
when you are inside an indoor area
9:59
they're saying now we have to put our
10:00
mask
10:01
whether you're vaccinated so you know
10:03
it's like every day it's a new day
10:05
you know you don't know you have to be
10:07
tuned to what the news
10:08
is telling us um but i do love cruising
10:11
i i don't
10:12
i love unpacking once i i love the idea
10:14
my least favorite way to travel i'm
10:16
gonna be honest because i really like
10:18
being
10:19
in a place and and staying there and
10:22
really getting and
10:24
and giving in to the to the people and
10:26
the culture and the food and just
10:28
becoming a neighbor
10:34
he does the tours i lay on a chaise
10:36
lounge and i think for me it's the only
10:38
way i can unwind after go go because i'm
10:40
as you know all year long and so going
10:43
on
10:43
on a cruise it's for me really it's an
10:46
escape because i can't
10:47
with my phone and i can't use my
10:49
computer and i can't do
10:51
anything internet wise other than paying
10:53
a crapload of money right
10:55
to get onto the internet you just hit on
10:57
something that i think
10:58
i would love this to be the main
10:59
takeaway today is that
11:01
that's what works for you so you do it
11:04
whatev and and whatever it is whether
11:06
it's the staycation whether you're
11:08
whether you're having a big barbecue in
11:09
your backyard for you and your husband
11:12
or 25 people whatever
11:15
makes your day whatever makes you feel
11:17
comfortable and safe and happy because
11:20
it every day is a gift and you got to
11:22
figure out how to get through all this
11:24
oh my gosh that's so true i mean that is
11:26
the takeaway um i hope i hope that you
11:28
guys are listening that really
11:30
is the takeaway now i'm not athletic in
11:33
any way shape or form
11:34
no so i live in a community where
11:37
there's golf
11:38
i don't golf i live in a community where
11:39
there's tennis i don't play tennis
11:42
um there are swimming pools there's
11:45
pickleball i
11:46
have don't play pickleball they have
11:47
bocce i applaud
11:49
people oh i love them and it's fun and i
11:52
played it when i first was living in
11:53
napa so we did that up there but it's
11:55
funny i'm not athletic
11:57
are you athletic i am yeah what is your
11:59
favorite kind of sports and you've ever
12:00
done a trip around those
12:02
um i have not actually well i knew other
12:05
than you means to go skiing
12:07
um i
12:10
my husband is an avid golfer and they
12:12
travel the world with a group of them
12:14
golfing
12:14
um however when we are going to be
12:17
spending quite a bit of time in south
12:19
florida at rosemary beach this summer
12:21
and i noticed um the hotel we're staying
12:24
at offers
12:24
um paddleboard stand up and i just got
12:28
excited when i saw that and i wanted to
12:30
i said i'm going to try that my husband
12:31
just laughed he's like yeah okay
12:34
that sounds like fun actually i like it
12:36
i i mean i've always
12:38
wanted to try it and and when we were in
12:40
hawaii there was no way because people
12:41
were doing it was admirable but the
12:42
waves were the current was way too
12:44
strong
12:45
for me to be comfortable so i said i i
12:47
hear it
12:48
in the gulf i'm it's pretty calm at
12:50
least not in the hurricane season
12:52
and i'm going to try it so i'll keep you
12:54
posted well keep me posted i mean again
12:57
yeah i i must be the most boring person
12:59
out there i mean literally i do
13:01
i put me on a on a camera on on screen
13:03
and i'm i'm in my element but put me
13:05
outside
13:06
and give me a golf club wait no it's not
13:08
gonna
13:09
not gonna happen so i'm really obviously
13:11
a staycation kind of gal so let's talk a
13:13
little bit about staycation backyard
13:15
gatherings you know and it's funny
13:18
because
13:19
uh even when you and i were talking
13:20
about the backyard gathering i said well
13:24
i'm paper plates
13:25
we throw some burgers on the grill you
13:27
know and we
13:28
you know that's what we do anyway oh no
13:31
that's not what i do
13:34
no i thought everything has like the
13:35
theme and to the other degree
13:38
and but it's fun i love doing that and
13:40
even when we eat like just have a couple
13:42
over for dinner it's like like
13:43
everything is i like to arrange have
13:45
everything done
13:47
i want to be you it makes me happy i'm
13:49
crazy i'm not martha stewart by any
13:51
stretch but i do
13:53
i i like entertaining it's give that
13:56
gives me peace and happiness to have
13:58
everybody over and to make it an
13:59
experience uh and and that again goes
14:02
back to your takeaway you know
14:04
do what makes you give you joy and
14:06
brings you joy
14:07
i'm a i'm a red meat girl i love my
14:10
traeger
14:11
i mean i will do red meat any day of the
14:13
week probably not good for my
14:14
cholesterol but i love red meat
14:16
and you on the other hand you're a
14:17
failure
14:20
or a gas bbq and that was the funny
14:22
thing we were talking about even the
14:24
equipment that we use
14:26
right i'm just fascinated by
14:30
um traeger yeah i i honestly don't know
14:32
a trigger is a smoker
14:34
and um you it's you you plug it in
14:37
and you put these um these
14:41
briquettes i don't even they're not
14:42
briquettes they're little pellets that
14:43
you put in
14:44
and they're hickory flavored and or
14:46
they're um elm flavored and you put them
14:49
in and the flavor permeates the meat
14:51
that you put in there so
14:52
because we like meat so much you know
14:55
that
14:55
it's it's kind of fun it's smoking
14:57
somewhere on my on my grill
14:59
i will smoke a cedar plank in water for
15:02
about an hour
15:03
and then pop a nice fresh piece of
15:05
salmon or
15:06
whatever on there and that just sends me
15:09
to heaven
15:10
uh it sounds delicious i have a plank
15:12
but i put it in my oven
15:13
so i've never heard it on the grill i
15:16
should try that i think
15:17
i should try that you know so so you do
15:20
thematic stuff
15:21
my theme is paper plates um but because
15:24
you were talking about thematic and
15:26
making sure for those of you out there
15:27
that like to do this and really you you
15:29
like to entertain
15:30
i encourage you again go check out the
15:32
uncork kit we put it in there
15:35
so much when putting this together you
15:36
guys remember
15:38
tell us a little bit about what's in
15:39
there we had some glasses glass well
15:42
unbreakable glassware and of course you
15:44
know champagne martini glasses
15:46
rocks glasses everything you can imagine
15:49
beautiful melamine
15:50
um outdoor dishes so you can be
15:53
comfortable you know that the
15:54
kids dogs um aren't going to break and
15:57
gosh what else is in there i i put
16:00
actually i put
16:01
because i like this i put the the white
16:04
claw in there you
16:05
probably did not approve that i but you
16:08
know what it comes in natural lime and
16:10
grapefruit ruby grapefruit it comes in
16:12
i might like that i might like the lime
16:14
yeah it's it's actually really tasty if
16:15
you'd like seltzer you don't you know
16:17
they're actually even those alcohol in
16:19
it you really don't
16:20
um feel the alcohol it's really more of
16:23
a refreshing
16:24
seltzer drink i happen to like seltzer i
16:25
don't think you like seltzer that much
16:28
not that much i'm going to go get some
16:31
melanine plates
16:32
because because i i can step it up a
16:34
little bit and i think that makes sense
16:36
especially when you're eating meat on a
16:38
paper plate and oops
16:40
exactly it's hard yeah and then there's
16:42
service where like beautiful bowls
16:44
and yeah warm silverware things and
16:47
um gosh oh oh no my face okay so this is
16:51
my favorite the raft
16:53
um okay it's umbrella fabric and i
16:56
actually had it and had to find out
16:58
where it was made they had it at our
16:59
hotel in punta mita
17:00
last month and it is the most beautiful
17:04
comfortable reversal every like every
17:08
raft
17:09
i don't love them any but this i never
17:11
wanted to get out of the pool so
17:12
definitely take a look at that
17:14
yeah that's you can't go wrong no you
17:17
can't and you also put some
17:18
barbecue smoker stuff in there as well
17:21
it's
17:21
a fish basket yeah and a thing that you
17:24
could put vegetables so they don't fall
17:26
through
17:27
all those things and that can be used
17:28
guys whether it's a traeger a smoker
17:31
a gas grill or a grill bread i made i
17:34
made avocado toast yesterday for
17:36
for everybody and i was out at six in
17:38
the morning grilling before it got too
17:39
hot just
17:40
throw some olive oil on on a you know
17:43
piece of sourdough bread and grill it
17:45
and smash the avocado and you're good to
17:47
go
17:47
i think that's delish i mean we could
17:49
live outside if it wasn't so damn hot
17:51
right
17:53
so there's other things that you can do
17:54
whether it's a staycation or vacation
17:56
i'm very fortunate here in
17:57
where i live coachella i'm in coachella
18:00
valley and the coachella festival's here
18:02
right and so we could go to a music if i
18:04
was so inclined
18:05
uh with the crowds of people which
18:07
that's why i got a stage coach i don't
18:08
think i would go to coachella
18:10
i uh probably stayed but the idea is
18:12
there are music
18:13
events outdoors that you can go to or
18:15
indoors there are little events
18:17
and i think it's really important
18:19
especially now coming out
18:21
to support those local events go
18:24
to them even even if you kind of don't
18:27
want go
18:28
go support them we're the artists i mean
18:30
they struggle too so this is a chance to
18:32
really
18:33
show them that i mean my music and my my
18:36
listening habits got me through a lot
18:38
this past year and it's a way to
18:40
you know give some love back to them
18:42
you're an amazing violinist
18:44
i'm a pianist and you know the two of us
18:47
have that in common as well we're
18:50
classically trained
18:51
and do that the music got me through it
18:53
as well
18:54
i'm actually looking one of the theaters
18:56
here ha they're bringing in some
18:58
orchestras
18:58
and i am going to go and
19:02
experience the orchestra that's going to
19:05
make you
19:05
that's a good way to dip your toes in
19:07
the water yeah it's you right in the
19:10
crowd and
19:11
right and day escapes that was the other
19:12
thing we talked about
19:14
go somewhere so where would it's in your
19:17
neck of the woods
19:18
where would be a day escape for you guys
19:20
uh
19:21
well sedona is beautiful it's a i mean
19:24
i'd probably spend the night it's about
19:25
four hours from where i am but there's
19:27
so much
19:28
um sonoida which actually we have
19:31
beautiful wineries
19:33
which is not a common knowledge and it's
19:36
southeast
19:37
it's beautiful there's nogales you can
19:39
pop across the border for a beautiful
19:41
day of shopping
19:42
and lunch and come back so
19:46
and then phoenix is an hour and a half
19:48
so it's fun to go up and meet
19:49
girlfriends and shop
19:50
and enjoy the great restaurants up there
19:53
yeah
19:54
sounds like fun yeah how about um
19:58
idle wild is absolutely stunning
20:01
we can also take the tram up to the top
20:05
like 30 degrees cooler yeah first time i
20:08
ever saw snow i was
20:09
three years old we're going to do that
20:12
but we're also near temecula so we can
20:14
go to the wine
20:17
we're a couple hours from la jolla from
20:19
the beach so if we wanted to
20:21
uh you know drive there but as you just
20:23
said it probably would just stay
20:24
overnight because
20:25
it's gorgeous there yeah you're not
20:27
going to want to you've got a day
20:29
but again the close you can feel
20:31
comfortable you're pretty close to home
20:34
yeah absolutely and i think whether
20:36
you're taking your staycation right now
20:39
or your vacation right now or in six
20:41
months all of these things
20:44
are are valid and i think it works no
20:46
matter what you're doing if it's a
20:47
little cooler
20:48
obviously there's other things well and
20:49
i'm sure it's like this where you are
20:51
but our local resorts and
20:53
world class resort dove mountain is the
20:55
roots chains
20:56
number one resort in their chain
20:59
it and they're having great deals for
21:02
the summer because it is hot here
21:04
so people come down from phoenix um pop
21:07
over from california
21:08
it's a gr you can so it's a great
21:10
financial break too
21:11
right and to support your local economy
21:14
it's nice exactly again we're
21:16
going we're going back to that i think
21:17
it's so important that we support the
21:19
local
21:20
economy so we we've we've dealt with um
21:22
whether we stay or we go
21:24
and i know this guy you know those
21:26
people whether it's
21:28
it's live or on replay let us know are
21:30
you going to do a staycation
21:32
or a vacation and you send some ideas
21:34
like yeah
21:35
what are your ideas we'll put them out
21:37
there and share with everybody because i
21:38
think we are all chomping at the bit
21:40
in whatever way we can and will to get
21:43
out
21:44
well and you know for for me and i i
21:46
guess i kind of forgot to say this my
21:47
one of my staycations is i haven't seen
21:50
my folks in a year and a half
21:52
and so they live in los angeles it's
21:54
about two hour drive so
21:55
one of our staycation things are going
21:57
to be is to get in our car
21:59
and surprise my parents who i haven't
22:01
seen um
22:02
and they're in their late 80s so i want
22:04
to you know i really want to go see them
22:07
um and so we're going to get in our car
22:08
i think and we're going to go up to
22:09
santa monica where it's a whole lot
22:11
cooler
22:12
uh near the beach and we're going to go
22:13
there so that's another thing is
22:14
visiting family
22:15
friends right visiting family and
22:17
friends that we maybe have seen in a
22:19
very
22:19
long time so any last
22:23
minute thoughts about all of this um
22:26
well first and foremost thank you for
22:29
tuning in we know you have a lot of
22:30
choices
22:31
in how you spend your time and we
22:32
appreciate this and we hope you've
22:34
enjoyed this
22:35
and we really encourage you to share
22:37
your ideas and
22:38
locations any hidden gems you know any
22:41
getaways that you can share we would
22:42
love to share that with the community
22:44
absolutely and you know the show's
22:46
called uncourt so
22:47
each time we meet which is the first
22:49
tuesday of the month
22:51
uh we have a different topic but we
22:53
never are far from our glass
22:55
whatever we're drinking ever
22:59
we have that and if you have some ideas
23:01
of things that you'd like us to cover
23:02
we'd love to hear from you as well on
23:04
that
23:04
i mean we've got lots of topics but if
23:06
there's something you say oh you know
23:07
what we'd like to get your take on it
23:10
put that in the comments as well we'd
23:11
love to hear from you and as mel said
23:13
you do have a choice
23:14
so thank you for choosing us today
23:16
because we
23:17
appreciate you and make sure you tune in
23:19
next time on the first tuesday of next
23:22
month
23:22
august for our next show i i can't
23:25
believe
23:26
this we're halfway through the year
23:29
through i know it's crazy how did that
23:30
happen
23:31
i don't know how that happened so go out
23:32
and give somebody an awesome day
23:34
and we'll see you next time goodbye
23:35
everyone bye mel
