hello everyone Karen Glasser here and
0:03
welcome to minding your mental health
0:05
I'm here with my son and co-host Rob
0:08
Glasser hello Rob
0:10
we talked about the topics that shape
0:13
mental health today we teach the
0:15
importance of inclusion and sure why we
0:17
should be kind so whether you're here
0:18
live or in replay let us know where you
0:22
are tuning in From Below today is a
0:25
really great topic and it's called the
0:27
importance of now so let's just jump in
0:31
why is this actually known as living in
0:33
the moment right living in the moment
0:35
absolutely so let's just kick it off why
0:38
do we need to live in the now
0:42
so this is my favorite topic I think so
0:44
far that we've done
0:46
um uh because this is something that I
0:49
do regularly as you know and everybody
0:51
around me does uh the importance of now
0:54
so why do we need to live in the now
0:56
well I think we should start off with a
0:58
with a famous author that people might
1:00
have heard of a man named Eckhart Tolle
1:03
who's been doing this for decades now I
1:05
believe and I want to start with a quote
1:08
that I found uh he said realize deeply
1:10
that the present moment is all you have
1:13
make the now the primary focus of your
1:16
life and you and I both agreed when I
1:19
sent this to you that this pretty much
1:20
sums up the entire show so that was a
1:22
great show bye guys I'm just kidding
1:24
um so looking at his thought process to
1:27
explain what he meant he looks at the
1:30
Consciousness which is the
1:32
how your brain works basically
1:35
um he uses the word spiritual awakening
1:37
which is something we've we talked about
1:39
yesterday
1:41
um but really he wants us to get away
1:42
from the ego and more on the uh
1:46
understanding mind you know and a lot of
1:48
a lot of quotes talk about that the ego
1:50
is bad the the understanding yourself is
1:54
good so why do we want to live in the
1:56
now well as he said make it your primary
1:59
focus focus on what's important and that
2:02
I think is why we want to do it because
2:05
we should if we you know more or less
2:09
want to be healthy stable people
2:12
um we want to focus on what you're doing
2:15
uh at the moment whether it's us doing
2:18
this video and US focusing very well on
2:20
you know doing this video or maybe it's
2:23
a few minutes from now like you know
2:25
deciding what we're going to do for
2:27
exercise over here or deciding
2:30
um
2:35
so Mark great comment thank you
2:37
yesterday is a canceled chip
2:39
today I like that hey man that is
2:43
awesome thanks for your participation
2:44
Mark that was great so off of that
2:46
actually because the next part I wrote
2:49
down was why you know why worry why
2:51
worry about the past in the future we
2:52
don't have to and he he nailed it right
2:54
there what you did before is great and
2:58
it shapes you what you're going to do is
3:00
great because it's a goal but what
3:03
you're doing now is the precise
3:06
importance of anything right and again
3:09
it's funny because it sounds like we're
3:11
saying oh well don't worry about your
3:12
future goals no we're not saying that
3:14
not at all but if you're too busy I
3:16
think it's a it might be an Einstein
3:18
quote if you're too busy focusing on the
3:20
thing you're you're going to be missing
3:22
out on everything you're doing it's kind
3:23
of one of those life quotes right like
3:25
those who at the oh no Alan Saunders I
3:29
think it was said something like if
3:30
you're too focused on the future you've
3:32
done you're done living some something
3:34
of that sort right
3:37
um
3:38
so that I mean that's what I think I
3:40
don't know what you think but that's why
3:41
I think we we need to be here
3:44
moment to moment I call it moment to
3:46
moment personally yeah
3:47
and with mental health I think that's
3:50
such a huge thing I mean I suffer from
3:52
anxiety and one of the things that I
3:55
suffer from anxiety with is worrying
3:56
about what's going to happen in the
3:58
future I'm constantly right thinking
4:01
about well the what ifs and and what if
4:03
this happens and I'm I'm constantly at
4:06
the same size okay well we don't know
4:08
what's going to happen so I need to live
4:10
right now and I think that people who
4:12
suffer with anxiety that is probably a
4:15
very huge part of it if you're tuning in
4:16
right now and you're saying oh yeah oh
4:18
yeah I'm constantly worried about what's
4:21
going to happen tomorrow or the next day
4:23
and constantly having to remind yourself
4:26
really you have no control over what's
4:27
going to happen tomorrow well there's
4:29
actually part of a thing because we
4:30
talked about this off and on air right
4:32
the one reason why I limit what I do or
4:35
as far as my social media is is I don't
4:37
want to hear and see all that I don't
4:39
want to deal with that yes there's a lot
4:41
of things going on that are big you know
4:43
when Queen Elizabeth passed away that
4:44
was a big story I you know I understand
4:46
that those are things that are
4:47
historical that are going to be going
4:49
down but I limit what I do whether it's
4:52
watching a video on YouTube or going on
4:53
my Twitter because there's too much of
4:57
people going what if oh no
4:59
and I try to just look at you know happy
5:02
dog videos or happy cat videos because
5:04
that you know that that brings you the
5:06
now that's what gives you so when you
5:09
were talking about
5:10
too much of wondering what's going to
5:13
happen that's why I stopped doing social
5:15
media because it caused too much what if
5:18
and exactly and I and again I don't
5:21
think I'm alone with this I don't think
5:23
you're alone with this I am sure
5:25
they we worry because I think we're
5:28
we're humans and we worry about things
5:30
like that and if we could stop worrying
5:32
just for a minute and I think that's
5:33
where meditation comes in that's where
5:36
journaling comes in that's where
5:37
self-care comes in so that you can get
5:40
away from the what ifs and oh my God my
5:42
past is defining me all of those kind of
5:44
messages right well and actually when I
5:47
uh when I was getting ready earlier I
5:48
thought I think the worry of future in
5:52
past is psychological for the human mind
5:54
obviously you know our ancestors like
5:56
neanderthals they always have to look
5:58
behind their back to make sure you know
6:00
they weren't eaten by a giant animal
6:01
right so I think as humans like you just
6:05
said it's always it's ingrained and it's
6:08
from the past right we now have to
6:10
figure out a way to forget about it
6:13
because you know we're not in that
6:15
situation we're in a different situation
6:16
well I mean I guess some you can say the
6:18
the error where it might be safety prone
6:20
as well right but generally if you spend
6:25
more time doing what you're doing and
6:27
not really concerning I mean even before
6:29
we got here we talked about me going out
6:31
again you know it's kind of one of those
6:32
sure I'll get there I'll do it but I'm
6:35
kind of going to do what I'm doing right
6:36
now
6:38
evolve to that evolve into it if you're
6:41
tuning in guys how do you deal with
6:43
stuff like this if you are
6:46
um living in the now and all of a sudden
6:47
you're thinking about you know the what
6:49
ifs what do you do we we're curious what
6:52
you do put it in the comments because we
6:54
want to let you know what we do
6:56
um and maybe maybe there's a tie in
6:59
there so
7:00
um Rob let's talk a little bit about
7:02
ways to stay present because I think
7:04
that that is probably one of the hardest
7:06
things to do especially in this day and
7:08
age staying present when we have so much
7:10
noise around us right you said social
7:13
media and the television and the I was
7:15
going to say the radio but do we have
7:17
radios yes we do in our cars in the car
7:19
I guess in the car but there's so much
7:21
noise out there so what do we do to stay
7:23
present what do you do let's see so this
7:25
one actually brought me back to our
7:27
routine video and the importance of kind
7:29
of doing what you're doing to make you
7:31
feel good and one of the first things I
7:33
wrote down that I do all the time there
7:35
is exercise yep
7:37
um and you're probably thinking well how
7:39
is that by now well it may not
7:41
necessarily be obvious to the now but
7:44
it's keeping you
7:46
it's keeping you focused on doing
7:48
something so like I do every morning
7:50
when we wake up we do morning exercise
7:52
every afternoon we do it there by the
7:54
end of the night we might do some
7:55
stretching what does that do for us well
7:58
obviously for our physical health great
8:00
for emotional health great but it also
8:03
keeps you have it's the Habit it keeps
8:05
you in the present Moon and you go oh
8:07
it's time we got to do the exercise you
8:10
have the yoga mat a lot of people will
8:12
do that uh Pilates I walk myself I walk
8:15
myself exactly walk in the dog uh people
8:17
who swim in the pool they'll do Labs uh
8:20
I know you got you know tennis courts by
8:22
you people who play tennis or golf so
8:24
exercise keeps you present because it
8:27
it's almost like part of your job it's
8:29
something you've got to do because you
8:31
want to do it but it keeps you in the
8:33
now as opposed to worrying about the
8:35
later the next one up we talk about it
8:38
all the time Ad nauseam here
8:40
meditating whether it's with an app
8:43
whether it's by yourself whether it's
8:45
two people sitting together just having
8:47
a chat a moment having a pleasant
8:50
conversation
8:51
keeping your mind mindfulness keeping
8:53
your mind open right keeps you in them
8:56
now you can do a walking meditation and
8:59
I often will do that I I again I'm an
9:01
overachiever so I want to walk my dog
9:03
and do something else at the same time
9:05
but I'm kidding but I'm not I mean the
9:09
dog is obviously in its own little world
9:10
you know snipping and whatever and I'm
9:12
actually in my own little world as well
9:14
just being in the now so I it's actually
9:17
like a walking meditation I I breathe
9:21
deeply I look at the flowers and the
9:23
trees and the birds and I listen and so
9:26
that it's a walking meditation so it
9:28
doesn't just have to be sitting there
9:30
and oming you know
9:31
um you don't have to do that uh if you
9:34
want to do that go ahead but you you
9:35
know walking is my kind of meditation
9:37
how you do um YouTube meditations right
9:40
yeah so we'll do guided uh but I was
9:42
gonna say I think one of the best kind
9:44
of meditative is when you know Krista
9:46
and I have conversations and just kind
9:48
of sit and chat because that really
9:50
makes you in the present because you
9:52
literally have to talk about what you're
9:54
doing or what you did that day so like
9:57
you said meditation can be anything from
9:59
moving to watching to listening or just
10:02
quiet you want to look out the window
10:04
for 10 minutes
10:05
go for it you know
10:08
now the next one here I have I think is
10:10
up your alley I know you do it all the
10:12
time
10:13
um journaling yep and similar to
10:15
meditation it's just a habit and again
10:17
you'll notice when I get to question
10:19
number three this is all going to be
10:20
kind of a habit forming video but
10:23
journaling just like meditation is
10:24
something you make yourself do and then
10:27
at some point you just do it and what is
10:30
generally good for now this is kind of
10:31
kind of counterintuitive right because
10:33
you're going to go backwards to read
10:35
right but while you're writing or
10:38
drawing or listing whatever it is you
10:43
are realizing what you're gonna do right
10:45
what maybe you don't want to do anymore
10:47
what maybe you you are going to do so
10:50
while journaling is great to go back and
10:53
relive and we talked about you know the
10:55
memories the other day
10:57
um journaling is great to get your
10:59
thoughts out especially I mean my ADD
11:01
brain starts talking before I do so I
11:04
just worry about things I I don't even
11:06
know what I just said I'm like what the
11:07
hell did I just say okay so writing
11:10
whether it's journaling like this or as
11:12
we talked about just on a piece of paper
11:13
on a through rain binder whatever it is
11:16
writing down something keeps you
11:19
grounded I think that's a word my
11:21
therapist has used keeps you grounded
11:22
and right in life right
11:26
um
11:27
now I know like you put the link up so
11:29
yeah we've got lots of them here and I
11:32
think the point is and I think Rob
11:33
you've said this multiple times as have
11:35
I it's not a matter of what you journal
11:39
in it's a matter of do you want to
11:42
journal and I know that back in the day
11:44
when when I was told you know you really
11:46
should journal and I used to say I don't
11:48
know how to write I how am I I don't
11:50
even know what to say and I think a lot
11:52
of us get caught up in that as well what
11:55
are we supposed to say and sometimes I
11:56
just thought it sounded too much like
11:58
school like I don't know exactly anymore
11:59
I already wrote you know and and the
12:01
thing is is in the beginning all I did
12:03
was just write three things that I was
12:04
grateful for because I didn't know what
12:07
to write and that caused so much anxiety
12:10
that it was like okay well this is
12:12
counter-intuitive how am I supposed to
12:14
like let my anxiety go if that's making
12:16
me anxious so for everyone that's
12:19
sitting there going oh great another
12:20
Journal I'm supposed to write something
12:22
no you're not supposed to write anything
12:23
and in fact go Google Journal prompts
12:25
it's amazing what's out there you know
12:27
make a list of 10 things that you like
12:29
to do so we put up some of these cool
12:31
things that we put a link um in Amazon
12:33
for these journals these are some of
12:35
some of the ones that we picked out we
12:37
thought they were kind of cool this is a
12:38
self-care one Rob do you know anything
12:40
about this one it says a day
12:42
and night reflection Journal uh just one
12:45
of the few ones that I came across that
12:47
were kind of you know more in tune to
12:49
somebody who may be writing down
12:51
thoughts and feelings uh maybe upcoming
12:54
events
12:56
um they're all all the ones I found kind
12:58
of do the same thing but you know some
13:00
of them like this self-care or like this
13:02
one they they try to make it easier for
13:05
you to write by giving you some sort of
13:07
like
13:08
somatic
13:10
something or other you know but but like
13:12
you said I mean even with a theme I'm
13:15
like I don't I don't care sometimes I'm
13:17
just gonna scribble because I just feel
13:19
like certainly you know and if this is
13:21
Aaron Condren so for those of you who
13:23
know where Erin Condren Erin Condren
13:25
started with calendars that was her big
13:27
thing and she's been around for years
13:29
and years and years I mean everywhere
13:31
you look and she's got these hard books
13:33
with spiral bound
13:34
um and it's all about you know doing
13:37
your calendar and stuff so she's
13:38
expanded obviously into journaling and
13:42
all the other stuff and again I don't
13:44
think you know these are beautiful
13:46
flowers that might be more female
13:47
Centric I don't know um maybe guys like
13:50
the flowers too this actually to be
13:52
honest does nothing for me I don't I
13:54
tend not to like the flowery kind of
13:57
stuff but you know there's something for
13:58
everyone and the next thing this is
14:01
actually funny because when when you
14:03
when you showed me that I went oh my
14:05
gosh I have one too I have like the
14:08
exact same one and
14:11
um what's cool about these guys is that
14:13
especially in this world of
14:15
um excessive use of things and we throw
14:17
things away and and we're constantly
14:19
throwing things away and and not being
14:21
able to save stuff this is a refillable
14:23
one so you're able to buy like an
14:26
inexpensive like notebook thing and then
14:28
you put it inside this beautiful you
14:30
know hard you know leather kind of case
14:33
for people that like stuff like that but
14:36
then again you know you might just be
14:37
like me and like the um you know the dog
14:39
notebook uh I just look at this and
14:42
think like Indiana Jones Lord of the
14:44
Rings like this is something you carry
14:45
around in their backpack while they were
14:47
you know yeah I I just thought it was
14:49
cool again I know when I was looking at
14:51
journals I remembered you had one and
14:53
yeah you have the one with the designs
14:55
paper this has sketching paper in it
14:57
which you know for I was thinking that
15:00
maybe I should do like art in here not
15:02
that I do art but maybe I should do art
15:04
in here there's another one that I want
15:05
to share that you had picked out and
15:07
actually for those of us who are just
15:09
plain Jane you know we're business
15:11
oriented we don't want the Frills and
15:13
this is me I would much prefer just to
15:15
have a simple black notebook period end
15:18
of story and this is an Amazon version
15:21
this is their notebooks uh very
15:23
inexpensive we put all the links into
15:25
the um the chat you know for you to
15:28
check it out we want to say but wait
15:29
there's more really truly when you go in
15:32
there just Google
15:34
journals
15:35
look up the composition notebooks we
15:37
found earlier that we have composition
15:39
notebooks back in the day and because we
15:41
were talking I like to do bullet
15:42
journaling and that's instead of having
15:44
lines or squares a grid it literally has
15:47
dots in it and it because it it doesn't
15:49
like make me say well that I have to
15:51
like uh draw in a straight line or I
15:54
can't make a pick you can do everything
15:55
in a in a a DOT Journal so that's one of
15:58
my favorites now you don't really
15:59
Journal though right that's not your
16:01
thing not to the extent that somebody's
16:03
supposed to journal I I like I my list
16:06
of things to do so every night we we
16:08
write down our to-do list for the next
16:10
day right that's the extent of
16:11
journaling
16:13
um I have sketched like uh you know
16:15
Chris has a couple sketchbooks and we
16:17
did a 30-day challenge once where every
16:20
day was a different picture to draw and
16:22
it was fun but yeah it's it's a habit
16:25
that for me I didn't get into fully
16:28
compared to the exercising the
16:31
meditation when it comes to right
16:33
you know so an easy way then to start
16:35
for everyone who is who is saying just
16:37
like this is not really my thing start
16:40
small then and literally at the end of
16:42
the day write down three things again
16:43
with the idea of staying in the now
16:47
right whatever question number three the
16:49
best way to is going into it is how do
16:52
you make this stick
16:54
um and I think this goes to kind of
16:56
something we talked about yesterday the
16:57
make your bed book yeah right who wrote
16:59
that story where he started by saying
17:01
make your bed every day and you will
17:04
find within the week you're just making
17:06
your bed because you're making your bed
17:07
it just becomes the same so how do you
17:09
make it a habit now this is the hard one
17:11
and this one is one that I will admit
17:13
I'm not the professor of perfect habits
17:16
but for me especially with the morning
17:18
exercise and now it's been almost
17:21
um it'll be two months on the 15th here
17:24
you just kind of you go into it as a way
17:28
to to again focus on on the present what
17:30
you're doing right if it doesn't stick
17:33
after a few days
17:34
cool pick something else that might do
17:37
it but I think the best way is trial and
17:40
error to make the Habit stick
17:42
um whether it's for you walking the dog
17:45
for me that just doesn't you know for me
17:47
it doesn't happen I'd like to do that
17:48
again you know it was fun taking the
17:50
dogs out it just I haven't done it in so
17:52
long you know right how do you make it a
17:54
habit I mean I think it's up to you how
17:56
you guys are going to make it a habit
17:58
and I think it's just
18:00
um
18:01
the more you do it it's a commitment to
18:04
yourself and actually the 30-day
18:07
challenge thing might be a great rare
18:08
the 21 Day Challenge thing go online and
18:11
look up a easy 21 day challenge there's
18:14
the
18:15
smoothie challenge there's the push-up
18:17
challenge you know and all it is
18:19
literally one thing and all it asks you
18:21
to do is it says for 10 minutes do 30
18:25
right whatever it is or for 21 days have
18:28
a smoothie you don't have to make it
18:30
just have a smoothie so pick something
18:32
that you probably can start easy on and
18:34
once you kind of get ingrained that I
18:36
can do one thing put something else down
18:38
put something else down
18:41
um I was at this point I'm able to push
18:44
myself enough to make myself do what I
18:46
want to do because I'm so you know
18:48
obsessed with the now right so for me
18:51
it's a little bit easier but I know it's
18:52
hard for a lot of people you know I
18:54
appreciate it as well I have 80d you
18:57
don't get focused and when you're not
18:58
focused you're kind of just like right
19:00
it's hard it is it's hard it's hard to
19:02
get into it and again for me my dog you
19:05
know Christopher looks at me like what
19:07
do you mean you're not going to take me
19:09
today so he guilts me into it but I'm so
19:12
glad when I do it that it's it's that
19:14
little push it's like okay I can't
19:16
disappoint I wanted to ask you a
19:19
question so I do this on my own as you
19:21
know Dad is not a journaler and he
19:22
doesn't meditate and isn't any other
19:23
stuff you do a lot of things with Krista
19:26
your wife do you think that that makes
19:28
it easier for you as an individual if
19:30
you have a partner in this and that's
19:32
what I want to share because if that's
19:34
it find yourself a partner to do
19:36
something like this right no definitely
19:38
it makes a difference your
19:40
accountability is the word I use
19:43
um you're doing it not only for you but
19:45
for the other person it could be your
19:47
spouse it could be a family member it
19:49
could be a friend whoever it is it could
19:51
be your dog I mean how you'll laugh but
19:53
people on YouTube literally will yoga or
19:55
work out with their dogs
19:56
because that's their that's their other
19:58
that's their Pleasant one yeah but yes
20:00
when it comes to having somebody there
20:03
even if you know for some reason if
20:06
she's not well and can't do it I'm still
20:08
gonna do it because I just picture her
20:10
right there in the chair next to me
20:12
doing it with me as I'm doing it right
20:14
so if you can do it with somebody
20:17
um you can do it via you know Zoom if
20:19
you can't get to somebody you know I
20:21
know because I know like you were baking
20:22
the bread via zoom and stuff like that
20:24
whatever you got to do whether it's in
20:27
person or on the computer or whatever
20:29
um get a buddy find a partner to do it
20:32
with right doesn't matter who someone
20:36
that you like to do things with uh but
20:38
I'm actually going to ask that because
20:39
it came to mind my therapist always
20:42
asked that too like is it easier to do a
20:43
task with your single mother I'm like
20:46
yes resounding yes it makes all the
20:48
difference in doing it that's funny yeah
20:52
and it's funny because for me I would
20:54
rather do it myself only because other
20:56
than the dog obviously but you know
20:58
because I don't
21:00
I just want I just rather do it myself
21:02
and I'm motivated to do it on my own I
21:05
don't know what I would do if I had to
21:06
depend on somebody else at this point
21:07
because now I'm on their time and they
21:09
have you know that kind of thing you
21:11
guys have a really special relationship
21:12
going there and I I envy that to be
21:14
honest
21:15
obviously there's lots of different ways
21:17
that we can stay in the now yes so we
21:20
want to encourage you guys go out and
21:22
take a look at that link of of different
21:24
journals check out Eckhart Tolle I mean
21:26
he's he started the whole thing The
21:29
Power of Now go check it out
21:31
um and and it's it's in that list so you
21:33
can go check out the book any last
21:35
thoughts Rob about just getting
21:37
motivated to stay in the now even though
21:40
the world wants us to move forward
21:45
um just turn off the outside
21:48
um the only voice that really is
21:49
important is you know you your
21:51
significant other your family but even
21:54
then though you know look at the look at
21:57
the reasoning why you want to do what
22:00
you're doing now and like almost every
22:02
life quote out there it always ends with
22:05
you know do it now or you're not going
22:07
to do it so right those people are
22:10
famous for some reason but but in
22:12
seriousness though I mean
22:14
um look you know listen to what you want
22:16
to do and you'll notice that in order to
22:18
get it done you gotta stay present right
22:21
you gotta focus on the moment
22:23
you'll get to where you uh what is it
22:25
you'll get to where you want to go you
22:26
just have to I think that's a doctor's
22:28
shoes right
22:31
um but yeah focus on what you're doing
22:33
now and you will easily get to what you
22:35
want
22:37
um by focusing on the moment and and
22:40
because I'm into technology and I love
22:42
this kind of stuff um we decided to play
22:44
around today with a QR code and what
22:47
that means is pick up your phone and put
22:49
it on the camera mode and reverse it so
22:51
that it's on the screen and take your
22:54
camera and literally just kind of
22:56
position it in front and it will take
22:58
you over to Amazon it will take you over
23:00
to that link to where the books are you
23:03
don't even have to do anything it's like
23:04
Auto Magic it's very very cool let us
23:07
know what you think about QR codes we've
23:08
we have never done this before we
23:10
thought it'd be kind of fun we also want
23:12
to let you know that as we always do
23:14
um that if you are having a challenge
23:17
right now and you need to reach out
23:19
reach out this is this is not you know
23:22
don't be ashamed we have 988 call the
23:25
number they will route you to wherever
23:27
you are and and somebody will be there
23:30
to assist you very very important and
23:32

23:34
some resources online we have the n i m
23:38

23:41
