0:02

0:04

0:07
or what you see is not always what you
0:10
get
0:12
uncorked is proud to be on the
0:13

0:18
this up here we just love vitalc they've
0:20
got some great shows there we're going
0:21
to talk about the travel program i mean
0:23
some amazing things go check out vital
0:25
so you will not be disappointed
0:28
what are we chatting about today
0:30
how we express ourselves
0:33
and it you know it's the dead of summer
0:35
and we couldn't even decide what to wear
0:37
so
0:38
and so we got a memo yeah um we're twins
0:42
it's miserable we're hot yeah we're
0:44
tired i'm ready for fall already which i
0:46
tend to do but
0:48
beyond that
0:50
how how how we express ourselves in you
0:53
know kind of in our
0:55
you know peak stage movement right what
0:57
that looks like and whether it's move
0:59
traveling or
1:01
crafts and hobbies and and we actually
1:04
got to talking about that hobbies right
1:07
and what do you do well we have to drink
1:10
first oh god
1:11
i'm sorry i cannot go another second
1:14
without drinking i'm drinking iced tea
1:15
today
1:17
and i'm drinking water
1:18
because i'm hot
1:21
cheers
1:22
cheers everyone
1:27
okay
1:29
so now free time
1:31
and and we have more of it so let's face
1:33
it and it's easy to kind of let the days
1:35
just just pass by and and you don't i
1:38
don't i don't want to feel that i've
1:39
done that that they've just melded into
1:42
one into another and i want to do things
1:43
but i mean i do work i do have things
1:46
but i have a lot more free time and i
1:48
want to spend it
1:50
you know in a good productive way yet an
1:52
enjoyable way so so how do you do that
1:54
what do you do um well i do you know i
1:56
do my yoga and and that actually it's a
1:59
it helps me because it really helps me
2:01
quiet my head um one thing that i do is
2:05
needle points
2:06
and i'm going to show all of you because
2:08
as you know i have my first grandchild
2:11
and my sweet baby isla i am doing
2:14
her first christmas stocking and i've
2:16
taken this on and i'm
2:17
working on it now so it will be ready
2:19
for her second christmas i love that
2:22
quite make it for the first i think i
2:24
think i told you i mean i i used to do
2:26
needlepoint and petty coin and when i
2:28
lost my sight in my right eye i can't do
2:30
it i'm living vicariously through you
2:33
because that is so stunningly gorgeous
2:35
so stunningly going it's so satisfying
2:37
too and and i mean that's a huge piece i
2:40
do that at home i travel i have little
2:42
in fact i so i got this from my
2:43
girlfriend who actually
2:45
introduced me to the needlepoint she's
2:46
she's an absolute act she teaches it so
2:48
she's incredible
2:50
and i do ornaments for the tree and so i
2:53
mean i've got everything in my goal hers
2:55
is 100 needlepoint ornaments and that's
2:58
my goal and i'm about
2:59
not quite halfway there um
3:02
and i have a lot and what i started
3:04
doing last year was
3:06
getting everywhere we've traveled
3:08
the ornaments because i have all the you
3:09
know the college the answer at the
3:11
interest the sports team all those
3:13
things
3:15
so now so that's been really fun so
3:16
everywhere we go i get a new
3:19
canvas and i love to start it and then
3:21
it also gives me something to do i read
3:23
um what else do i do i both do puzzles
3:28
well yes and i have an app on my phone
3:30
how
3:33
and you can do it anywhere i do it on
3:34
the plane and it it is i just unwind i
3:37
love that
3:38
i do i do them on my dining room table i
3:40
know i love that too and then we glue
3:42
them and we staple them together which
3:44
is the coolest way to say what you do
3:46
because usually just put them in the box
3:47
i know and then and then you pass them
3:48
on no no i'm like they're mine i keep
3:51
them and i put them on the wall we
3:53
became upset we did it always that's the
3:54
kid summer vacations i always had a
3:56
table in in our dining room actually i
3:59
put up a card table
4:00
and we did puzzles all summer long and
4:03
the beginning of the lockdowns that we
4:05
started that again and we were just
4:07
going to and then you couldn't find them
4:08
anywhere i know we were not alone
4:11
everyone was
4:13
and they were all everyone out now not
4:14
so much they're back and forth
4:16
family it's really nice
4:18
it really was um i i actually started
4:21
doing i'm not an artist in any way shape
4:23
or form but
4:24
my sister introduced me to something
4:26
called zentangle and
4:28
it's so cool um it's it's kind of like
4:31
doodling but to the extreme kind of
4:33
doodling and you make really cool things
4:35
so i literally i made this that's a zen
4:38
which is so cool and it's it's a
4:40
paperweight so i actually made it so you
4:42
create something so that's what i do so
4:44
can you show can you show us absolutely
4:46
what it looks like because i of course i
4:48
had to go order this because i do love
4:49
to doodle so here's here's here's i'm
4:52
going to show you a couple of zentangles
4:54
that's a zentangle so what you basically
4:55
are doing is you create sections
4:58
on a piece of paper and in each section
5:01
you zentangle something so either it's
5:04
circles it's lines but it owes patterns
5:06
and then they teach you how to shade and
5:08
so i've got some cool things like this
5:10
i've literally learned so you start from
5:12
scratch
5:15
your mind takes you yeah so i mean it's
5:17
like show and tell here but these are
5:19
all zentangles and
5:21
it's i'm having a blast i literally and
5:23
it makes me feel like i'm an artist but
5:25
but also how does it
5:27
take you out of this oh yes because
5:30
yes detached you have to you don't have
5:32
a choice because you have to focus each
5:34
line goes in a particular place and you
5:37
you're you know so you're very
5:38
studiously doing this it takes me to a
5:41
completely zen no pun intended a zen
5:45
place and i think that's really kind of
5:46
how they created and i think that's what
5:48
then that's what needlepoint does that
5:49
for me because we're so used to always
5:52
being on we have our phones like putting
5:54
something down to check and i put it i
5:56
keep it on a table
5:58
i just focus because it's so detailed
6:01
that you have to and it's relaxing and
6:03
it's you know i i totally love doing
6:05
that the other thing i do is i have an
6:07
app on my phone like you have one for
6:08
puzzle i have one for coloring
6:11
i have a coloring app it's called happy
6:13
color and again for the same thing you
6:16
totally just go into it and nothing else
6:19
is the world around the world and like
6:22
you don't have to be an artist it's
6:24
color by number basically yeah you see
6:25
it you push it i love it i feel like i'm
6:28
an artist yeah which is always always
6:30
always a lot of fun and we're all
6:31
musicians well you are too we're all
6:33
musicians in in our house and i play the
6:35
violin and i i've started with isla my
6:39
granddaughter is sitting here with me at
6:40
the piano and just letting you know kind
6:42
of help like yeah and watching that and
6:44
i always i mean they're there or with
6:46
the violin and playing and hoping to to
6:48
how wonderful is that i think that's one
6:50
and starting her at a very early age
6:52
which is great and who knows she might
6:54
be the next virtuoso virtuoso on
6:56
violence possibly
6:58
so
6:59
it's i think it's hard for all of us who
7:01
are go go go people
7:03
to find balance in our life and and and
7:05
find the time
7:07
to get that balance do you create
7:09
hobbies i mean i know that you're you're
7:11
needle pointing do you do it by yourself
7:12
do you do it with your partner
7:15
what how do you decide what your hobby
7:16
is going to be now that we're trying to
7:18
find some balance i think i don't i tend
7:21
to
7:22
when we decided to to go into this i
7:24
thought about
7:25
i don't think of it as hobbies and i
7:27
don't think of it as finding time i
7:29
think of it as allowing time for myself
7:32
good distinction and and i do that and i
7:35
i
7:36
that i do pretty easily i i will i know
7:40
that what i do well i know what i need
7:41
to do to keep my cup full which helps me
7:45
be there for other people and i can tell
7:47
when i have not done that so i i mean i
7:50
do like and i alter you know i love
7:51
being out i golf i walk i all of those
7:55
things are to me
7:57
right hobbies you know i i don't really
7:59
know how to funnel it into a term like
8:01
that i enjoy it things that i do for me
8:03
that i enjoy you like to do yeah so it's
8:05
maybe self-fulfillment
8:07
i and you know for me it's trying
8:10
whether i'm going to do something with
8:11
my husband an activity we're starting to
8:12
cook together so that's that which is
8:15
always
8:16
my husband likes peanut butter that's
8:17
that's his thing you know peanut butter
8:19
or or pasta with sauce on it so we're
8:21
trying to branch out a little bit and
8:24
starting to cook a little make some
8:25
pizzas together you know put your own
8:27
stuff on the pizza some lasagna italian
8:29
he loves italian so we we kind of do
8:31
that that's wonderful which is which is
8:33
kind of fun for me again music is the
8:34
same thing for me i listen to music all
8:36
the time but i think what what happens
8:39
is we get a little bit older and more
8:41
more mature uh we start we want to honor
8:44
the the personalities that are in our
8:46
lives yes right um and we were talking
8:48
about how we unwind and my husband owned
8:50
wines one way i unwind a totally
8:52
different way and we very specifically
8:54
talked about you know crew i the reason
8:56
why i like to go on cruises is that i
8:58
like to sit on a chaise lounge like the
9:01
whole time because so you don't you're
9:03
not the person that plans the excursions
9:06
and goes and discovers the cities that
9:08
you're in no i could i would be very
9:10
happy if i never had to leave the chaise
9:12
lounge because it's an enforced
9:15
um
9:16
time for me to not work i don't have my
9:18
phone with me because you're on a cruise
9:20
ship there's no no connection you can't
9:22
have it so the only thing that i can do
9:24
is do the one thing that i can't do
9:26
during the rest of the year so but
9:27
that's what a vacation should be and
9:29
whatever it is like for me it is getting
9:32
out i and that's why i've always i've
9:34
preferred
9:35
land travel to cruise because i like
9:37
more time i like to spend time in a
9:40
place that we visit i like to get to
9:41
know the people and kind of feel like
9:43
i'm a resident there so
9:45
and you and you know that and you know
9:47
that about yourself and you honor that
9:49
you know my husband likes to scoop it or
9:51
not and actually not scoob anymore but
9:52
snorkel he loves to snorkel and so
9:54
that's why we cruise because
9:56
no matter where you go at least where we
9:58
go you can he can go and cr he can
10:00
literally go and do a snorkeling like
10:02
for the whole day and i don't have to
10:03
worry that he's worrying about me and
10:05
i'm not worried about him i'm on i'm on
10:07
my shay's lounge with a little umbrella
10:09
drink in my hand reading a really good
10:11
book and he's out taking pictures of
10:13
fish because that makes him happy he
10:16
loves it he loves it and that's a really
10:18
good example about and about honoring
10:20
your partner or who you are spending you
10:22
know who you travel with but my husband
10:25
has
10:25
he goes more than any he has more energy
10:28
than god i just
10:30
i don't know where he gets at all and
10:31
it's amazing
10:32
but he needs to slow down so we go on
10:34
vacation and i want him to slow down and
10:37
we were for my 40th birthday he
10:39
surprised me we went to tahiti
10:41
and we were there for three weeks
10:44
it wasn't until the second week i lit i
10:46
saw him change right because there was
10:48
nothing to do and he really started to
10:50
embrace that until we were in bora bora
10:53
and he realized that it was also when
10:55
that that year the giants
10:57
were in in the playoffs to go to the
10:59
super bowl and he couldn't get the game
11:01
oh and he went crazy he was like i gotta
11:03
get the puppy yeah i mean you could then
11:04
you could see it come back but he
11:07
it was beautiful to see that he could
11:09
and in the meantime i
11:10
was out on the hammock every day or we
11:12
had that little over the water yeah the
11:15
house yeah and very cool um sitting and
11:17
enjoying that reading and he can't do
11:19
that as easily he he unwinds a different
11:21
you know differently and then for him
11:23
too it's like it's on the golf course or
11:24
i mean it's a very high-powered job the
11:26
financial industry is very strong very
11:28
stressful so he really does need to
11:30
check out and he does it the best way
11:32
that serves him and what i've come to
11:34
after 30 years of marriage is to to
11:36
respect that not say oh yeah but you
11:38
should do this it's like this works for
11:39
him let him do what works for him and
11:41
that's i think what you expect
11:43
absolutely cruz
11:45
it's certain
11:46
it's like a perfect kind of vacation for
11:48
us because we both can do what we want
11:50
to do without feeling like we are
11:52
impinging on what the other one wants to
11:54
do he has no expectation that i'm gonna
11:56
go snorkeling it's not ever gonna happen
11:58
and he's okay with that he takes his
12:00
little bag of bread you know in the
12:01
little ziplock bag and he goes and he
12:03
does his thing and he's so happy and
12:04
it's a great way for him to unwind and
12:06
i'm happy for him that he can do that
12:08
yeah well when we and when we go when we
12:10
travel for extended periods of time he
12:12
will often work during the days i love
12:14
to walk right and again get out and
12:17
explore wherever we are and i have no
12:19
illusions that he's going to wake up one
12:21
morning and say
12:22
i'm going to go walk with you because it
12:24
ain't gonna happen and i don't know that
12:25
i wanted to either because i do enjoy
12:27
that time and i know he's enjoying his
12:30
time so really and i think that as we
12:33
move through our lives we become
12:36
more comfortable with
12:38
that space and allowing those that we
12:40
love to be who they are and not trying
12:43
like i i love that you're cooking
12:44
together yeah that will never happen in
12:46
my house
12:47
but i but then i get it because he he
12:49
enjoys
12:50
what i cook so i love preparing a meal
12:52
and my husband does not enjoy anything
12:54
that i cook because he's not a foodie
12:56
and so my root actually that was my
12:58
response to that is like okay you don't
13:01
like what i make let's make what you
13:03
like and we'll make it together and
13:05
that's been kind of fun it's been kind
13:07
of fun
13:10
yeah we have we have he likes it he he
13:13
likes no choice
13:14
he likes it smooth he likes you know
13:16
like it drips off
13:17
it's a huge um i'm actually not a peanut
13:21
butter lover i will but i will i'll eat
13:23
when when i do do it it will be the
13:24
creamy um will he try other like
13:27
sunflower butter or almond butter no it
13:29
has to be peanut butter crunchy peanut
13:30
butter no no chunky it's smooth peanut
13:33
butter totally likes the smoothie likes
13:34
to see it drip over the side so you know
13:37
there is that
13:38
so
13:40
i want to you know we've been talking
13:41
for the past couple months because we
13:42
are really really excited about the the
13:44
new travel platform that that rolled out
13:46
on vitalcy a couple of months ago
13:49
specifically and specifically corner
13:51
it's right around the corner now alaska
13:52
and you're going yeah
13:54
there's only just i mean i only think
13:56
there's a few cabinets left on this
13:57
particular group trip um so don't forget
14:01
go and check it out at vitalscene.com
14:03
because
14:04
mel's going
14:06
yes and i want to share i i've started
14:09
wearing and working with a company
14:10
called coolibar and it's it's sun
14:12
protection clothing and
14:14
they have the greatest just great i mean
14:17
you could wardrobe your entire your
14:18
entire family i got right you know sweet
14:20
baby i left but it protects you and it's
14:22
it's spf and it's protective and so much
14:25
better than the stuff you slather on
14:27
your body with the chemicals it's
14:29
fabulous and it's the designs are
14:31
wonderful and they travel really easily
14:33
so check that out you'll see it in the
14:35
store we've put some items from there
14:37
well you're also going to see like
14:38
needlepoint stuff things that we're
14:40
doing zentangle you're going to see that
14:41
in the store go pick it up we'd love to
14:43
hear from you guys like what do you like
14:45
to do what kind of hobbies do you have
14:47
are you creating new hobbies right now
14:49
are you how do you unwind all of the
14:51
things that we're talking about and it
14:52
is fun to learn it like i had never
14:54
heard of zentang and she started
14:56
sharing this and i'm like the heck is
14:58
that i know and of course i was on you
14:59
know the website again you got your own
15:01
i did okay
15:02
um and i can't wait to give it a try we
15:05
probably should like zentangle something
15:06
for the uncourt crowd i don't know while
15:08
we're drinking you know how they do the
15:10
art the wine and art things you go to um
15:13
you know you i think it's loosened you
15:14
up well that would be fun to
15:16
just to do one yeah without drinking and
15:19
then see this and see the difference and
15:21
see how your creativity expands we do
15:24
want you to go check out the um
15:26
our store i'll go over to uncorked dot
15:29
shop you can also go to uncork dot store
15:31
