0:17
today we are welcoming New York Times
0:20
best-selling children's author Tim J
0:22
Myers and he is going to be reading from
0:24
his book yeah bye and the egg pirates I
0:27
have to say I love that name I want to
0:30
know what an egg pirate is but before we
0:32
cut to that let me give you a little bit
0:34
of background on Tim J Myers he is a
0:36
widely published writer storyteller
0:38
songwriter visual artist and senior
0:41
lecturer at Santa Clara University his
0:44
work has made the New York Times
0:45
bestseller list for children's books and
0:48
has been reviewed in The Times and read
0:50
aloud on NPR so without further ado we
0:53
welcome Tim to the show hey how you
0:57
doing hi Karen and hello kids of the
1:00
world how are you doing I hope
1:01
everybody's doing great there is nothing
1:05
quite like sharing stories
1:06
so I'm here to do that and today I am
1:09
delighted to say that I'll be reading
1:11
you my book yeah bye and the egg pirates
1:15
and I can't wait so before we start we
1:18
want everyone to snuggle in with the
1:20
people that they came with maybe it's a
1:21
mom and a dad or a grandma or grandpa or
1:24
brother or sister or aunt or uncle
1:27
whoever it is snuggle in with them
1:30
because it's time for story time are you
1:33
ready Tim I'm ready good here we go hey
1:38
now I live in the Bay Area which is very
1:41
close to San Francisco and off the coast
1:44
of San Francisco there are some
1:45
beautiful islands called the farallon's
1:48
they're way out there in the ocean now
1:50
in the old days in California there was
1:53
a Gold Rush one of the biggest gold
1:55
rushes in the world people found gold
1:57
and the miners came by the thousands
1:59
from all over the world and one of the
2:01
problems they had was how do you feed so
2:03
many miners San Francisco was a tiny
2:06
little town at that time not a big city
2:08
well out there on the islands what they
2:11
were seabirds you can kind of see them
2:13
in the picture and what a seabirds do
2:16
they lay eggs especially this kind of
2:18
bird called a mer and the mers laid eggs
2:21
that were big and thick shelled and one
2:24
egg could feed three men so people
2:26
started going out to the islands to get
2:28
the eggs to sell to the gold miners
2:31
there was money to be made and there
2:32
were miners to be fed well my book is a
2:35
story about a Chinese boy and his father
2:38
and uncle will go out to get some of
2:40
these eggs and I want to dedicate this
2:43
to Chinese Americans today because
2:45
Chinese Americans have done so much for
2:47
America yeah bye and the egg pirates and
2:52
you will find out what an egg pirate is
2:56
pardon me I'm trying to get this up into
3:02
that I'm doing it the wrong way
3:06
yeah I was dreaming of whales when a
3:10
gentle hand woke him get up now son his
3:15
mother said today is a new adventure
3:18
you sail to the islands rubbing his
3:24
hands for warmth in the dawn chill now
3:28
hurry to the beach there his father and
3:31
uncle were preparing their small boat
3:33
out across the shallow bay sunlight
3:36
flooded the world after years of famine
3:41
and war Yao's family had crossed the
3:42
ocean from China to gold mountain
3:45
their name for America y'all had been
3:48
sad to leave China but sadder still that
3:50
they saw no whales during their long
3:52
journey now you can imagine what it
3:54
would be like if you haven't seen a
3:56
whale but if you have you can remember
3:59
it's an amazing thing to see a whale in
4:03
now Yas family lived in a fishing camp
4:05
nestled in Upper San Francisco Bay north
4:13
the boy from next door came running
4:16
going shrimping yeah no Kuan we're
4:20
sailing out on the ocean to the islands
4:22
where the sea birds lay eggs to collect
4:25
them for all those hungry gold miners
4:30
Yahoo we need you his father said
4:33
sharply yeah ran to help
4:36
what about Pirates Kwan asked they might
4:39
steal your eggs and it's true pirates
4:42
actually did steal eggs from the egg
4:44
gatherers back in those days our fishing
4:47
taxes do y'all's father said and we must
4:50
send more money to our family in
4:51
Guangdong miners pay a lot for eggs as
4:55
for pirates we'll just have to take our
4:58
chances Yas mother came running don't
5:05
forget to rub poo tais belly for luck
5:07
she said yells uncle laughed but they
5:13
each held the small stature of the God
5:15
as yeah rubbed he prayed silently give
5:19
us good fortune and please keep pirates
5:23
away when you return yells mother said
5:26
I'll mix the eggs with shrimp she winked
5:29
at Yahoo shrimp foo yung my favorite he
5:33
cried can you guess who else loves
5:35
shrimp foo yung yes I do
5:38
very very much soon they dragged the
5:45
boat into the little surf and set their
5:47
sail before long they rounded the Marin
5:50
Headlands made for the open ocean
5:53
Yao gazed across the water at San
5:55
Francisco with its house covered hills
5:57
and the forest of masts crowding
6:00
its peers current wind and tide move
6:04
them quickly out of the bay the morning
6:07
land breeze was behind them
6:08
the Seas gentle to the west they could
6:11
see the islands the farallon's 26 miles
6:14
away their stony points clear against
6:17
the Blue Horizon and maybe you can see a
6:21
little hint of something in this picture
6:24
yaow his father said we have to watch
6:26
for pirates stay alert
6:28
yes Father Yahoo shivered when they
6:37
reached the main island the Sun was high
6:40
we only want myrrh eggs yeah uncle said
6:44
the shells are thick hard to break the
6:47
birds fly off when humans come leaving
6:51
unpress unprotected pardon me and the
6:54
eggs are so big one can feed three
6:56
people now his father said you gathered
7:00
near the boat where it's safer we'll go
7:03
soon yah was scrambling over the rocks
7:05
filling his basket admiring the graceful
7:09
shapes of the speckled eggs in a few
7:12
hours their boat was full and they set
7:14
sail for home the eggs clicking gently
7:17
against each other with the rocking of
7:18
the hall well it sounds like they're in
7:22
they've got the eggs for a time they
7:27
watch the land grow larger as the west
7:30
wind drew them on yah was getting sleepy
7:33
when something caught his eye
7:35
sails he yelled pointing East his father
7:39
jumped up pirates yell asked fearfully
7:42
his uncle nodded all that worked for
7:47
yeah uncle said shaking his head yow
7:54
looked at their precious cargo suddenly
7:57
an idea came to him we can hide the eggs
8:02
where the uncle said his uncle said we
8:05
couldn't hide anything on such a small
8:07
boat in a rush Yahoo explained his plan
8:10
I never would have thought of that said
8:20
yeah uncle with the laugh even yes
8:22
father smiled it quickly got to work the
8:27
pirate boat was still a half mile off
8:30
when they finished not an egg could be
8:33
seen now yeah his father said you
8:36
tend to fish when the larger boat drew
8:43
up yaow could see hard looking faces
8:47
a sailor called out what are
8:50
Yao saw his father winced angrily at the
8:53
hated word and noticed how his uncle's
8:56
jaw tightened fishing yah his father
8:59
answered in English just fishing the man
9:02
asked suspiciously not much else to do
9:07
out here said yeah uncle the man glared
9:10
you given me lip boy no said yeah uncle
9:14
looking straight into the man's eyes
9:17
ease up Geoffrey's an older man emerge
9:20
from behind a pile of baskets he looked
9:23
their boat over carefully seems like
9:26
he's the boss doesn't it why don't you
9:30
cross on over make sure they're telling
9:33
the truth he said quietly Jefferies gave
9:36
a nasty smile but just as he lifted his
9:40
leg to step onto the boat a great watery
9:43
woosh filled the air when Yahoo looked
9:47
up he thought his heart would stop an
9:55
immense humpback whale it's dark skin
9:59
speckled with white barnacles lifted
10:02
itself high out of the waves then it's
10:05
slumped sideways falling back with a
10:07
huge splash that left both boats rocking
10:11
madly the men grabbed for anything to
10:16
hang on to as the boats pitched
10:20
dangerously close to each other finally
10:22
the rocking eased we don't need no
10:25
damage to our boat the pirate boss said
10:27
ain't got eggs let's clear out he stared
10:31
hard at yahoos father and we don't need
10:34
your kind around here understand his
10:37
heart thumping yeah watch the big boat
10:43
once the pirate sails disappeared Yao
10:45
helped halt in their nets as the eggs
10:49
came dripping from the water yeah
10:51
laughed with joy the eggs felt cold to
10:55
the touch as they lowered them gingerly
10:57
back into the hole only three were
10:59
broken gold screeched and dog was yeah
11:02
uncle threw the shells overboard so you
11:05
see his wonderful idea they put the eggs
11:08
and then nets and put them under water
11:12
good thing we rub who ties belly said
11:15
yeah uncle it brought us luck after all
11:17
yeah did too said Yas father smiling I'm
11:21
proud of you my son soon they tied up in
11:27
a wharf in the city and yells father
11:29
sold the eggs stuffing more money than
11:32
Yao had ever seen into his worn purse
11:34
keeping a few eggs for themselves they
11:37
sailed home as they neared the beach all
11:43
the families came running the Twilight
11:46
was soon full of the mouth-watering
11:48
smell of shrimp foo yung who that makes
11:53
me really really hungry sitting around a
11:57
fire everyone ate till they could eat no
12:00
more and listen to the story of Yao's
12:02
delicious trickery ten times over then
12:06
they talked and laughed till the moon
12:08
was high it was late when Yale finally
12:15
dropped into bed happy and exhausted
12:18
when you woke this morning his mother
12:20
said tucking him in did you ever think
12:23
this day would be so wonderful it was
12:27
wonderful yaw murmured I saw a whale
12:33
then he slept a bit of shrimp who young
12:37
still clinging to his lip
12:40
the end oh my goodness oh my goodness
12:50
that was awesome now I know what what
12:53
the eggs and and all that all about that
12:55
was a great great story Tim while you
12:58
were reading we had some comments and
13:00
some questions first of all I mean I
13:04
don't know if I'm gonna say this right
13:05
Irene Hart our entire fourth grade class
13:09
visiting way to go I and Bigelow said or
13:16
Mickey Mickey said what is it like to be
13:18
an author because I get to be working
13:21
having fun thinking about things all the
13:24
time so this book was written because my
13:27
family and I took a boat tour out to
13:29
those Islands I got very season ik I saw
13:32
a shark and we saw the whales jumping
13:35
and while I'm out having front of that
13:36
boat the seasick part wasn't fun but
13:38
while I'm out having fun on that boat I
13:40
was working as an author because it gave
13:42
me the idea for this book I love being
13:44
an author I love that and we had one
13:48
more question and I think this is great
13:50
because we always should give credit to
13:51
the illustration Glenn ask that question
13:55
Mason thank you these pictures were made
13:57
by Bonnie pang you can see her name I
14:00
get this up here right Bonnie's
14:02
illustrations are fabulous I am so
14:06
grateful to her they really they're
14:10
beaut they're absolutely beautiful
14:12
so I'm putting up an image right now of
14:14
the book so that people can see it
14:18
clearly what the book looks like and
14:20
this book is available on Once Upon a
14:23
story time dot live so we're going to
14:25
encourage people to go head on over
14:27
there and pick up a copy now that you've
14:28
heard the story I'm sure you're gonna
14:29
want to read it again and again and look
14:31
at the beautiful beautiful pictures so I
14:34
wanted to put that up there and as
14:36
normal Tim as you know and all the rest
14:38
of the authors oh here we got another
14:41
comment we have it okay so we have to
14:43
put these up because they're fun
14:45
Peter Rumble says Sandra Rumble and her
14:48
fourth bundle said your fourth
14:50
you guys made my day thank you I love it
14:57
I love it so we always do a download we
14:59
always have something that our our
15:01
friends can go back afterwards to keep
15:04
the fun going long after the shows have
15:07
ended and in this case we have something
15:09
a little bit different this is more for
15:12
our teachers and of course our parents
15:14
right now our teachers right so tell us
15:17
a little bit about what they can expect
15:19
to get so they're not surprised because
15:20
it's like 13 pages or something like
15:22
that so tell us tell us they might
15:24
intimidate you I'm a teacher and I was a
15:27
teacher educator for a long time so I
15:29
have a lot of materials to use this book
15:31
to teach kids and I really emphasize in
15:35
a way that really motivates kids is
15:37
really interesting for kids but I also
15:38
synched it all up with the California
15:40
language arts and social studies
15:41
standards where if you're doing this you
15:44
can go in it's written for teachers but
15:46
parents as teachers or just as parents
15:48
there's plenty of little ideas you can
15:50
pull out of that to work with your kids
15:53
at all you can have fun and learn at the
15:56
same time which is the best thing ever
15:58
yeah you know what and I thank you for
16:00
that because you know it's wonderful to
16:04
watch and to listen to a story but to be
16:06
able to go out afterwards and do some
16:08
activities and keep the fun going that's
16:10
what it's all about so along those lines
16:13
we're going to send people over to your
16:15
website thank you iron ore a song calm
16:19
to check out everything else that's
16:21
going on with you and if you're playing
16:23
on Twitter which I do I don't know how
16:26
many of you play on a Twitter you can go
16:28
check out Tim there at T Myers story
16:31
song and if you happen to be a Facebook
16:35
person go to Tim Jay Myers one and just
16:39
put it in the search engine and you will
16:40
find him and then finally go on over to
16:44
youtube and put Tim Jay Myers in it
16:46
because you'll find all of Tim's YouTube
16:50
videos you are awesome
16:52
this has been so much fun I can't wait
16:56
for you to come back and read one of
16:57
your other stories like
16:59
waiting to come back and we have an O
17:01
you know what I have we're I'm just
17:03
gonna keep putting the comments alone so
17:05
Annie says with a heart hello thank you
17:08
for setting this up you're so welcome
17:10
it's our pleasure yeah for Karen and
17:12
then we have our other fourth-grade
17:15
class thank you so much we sing a song
17:17
about the gold rush and say and we say
17:19
eggs cause three dollars it's true it's
17:23
true that there's even a story from that
17:25
time that things were things are so
17:28
expensive that miners would buy pears
17:30
and apples on trees before they grew on
17:33
the trees and they put a little piece of
17:34
paper around the tree saying this pair
17:37
belongs to Joe so that's we should sing
17:40
about that we absolutely should well we
17:43
want to thank everyone for showing up
17:45
today because we know that you had a
17:46
choice and you decided to come listen to
17:48
Tim tell his story so we're gonna see
17:51
you guys next next week for a bunch of
17:54
other programming but I want to make
17:55
sure you come back tomorrow
17:56
because we welcome Rachel rush from
17:58
mindful circle for some yoga fun on once
18:01
upon a yoga time and again don't forget
18:03
to go check out Once Upon a story time
18:05
dot live to pick up the downloads the
18:08
activity sheets and to go purchase your
18:10
own copy of the book so we want to say
18:12
goodbye to everyone and we'll see you
