hi everybody Welcome Back to Life on
0:09
Court and this installment of Aging like
0:11
a fine wine where we talk to ordinary
0:14
people doing extraordinary things today
0:18
I have Todd hman with us he's a
0:20
celebrity stylist Fashion Show Producer
0:23
a content creator and chair of the West
0:25
Hollywood Public Safety commission among
0:28
just a few things welcome Todd well well
0:32
thank you first of all thank you for
0:34
welcoming me and I'm thrilled to be here
0:36
with you you know I love and adore you
0:38
so I'm very excited oh you're sweet tell
0:42
us a little bit about you and how you
0:44
ended up here and doing what you're
0:46
doing now at this time in your life well
0:49
you know long story short when I was
0:51
younger I was a professional
0:53
dancer um I danced with the company in
0:55
Pittsburgh and Pittsburgh is
0:58
very cultured with Arts there are a lot
1:01
of different dance companies I went to
1:03
Point Park college CMU Carnegie melon is
1:06
there so there's a lot going on in
1:08
Pittsburgh and the company I danced with
1:11
I was lucky enough to dance with Bill T
1:13
Jones and his partner Arie Zayn but at
1:17
24 I was burnt out you know like 24 at
1:22
24 I was burnt out you know for 9 to 10
1:26
hours a day people yell and scream at
1:27
you and tell you how awful you are oh
1:29
only to make you better you know that's
1:32
dance and I met someone that was moving
1:34
to La we kind of hit it off only knew
1:37
him for seven days and I followed him to
1:40
Los Angeles however that was the mid 80s
1:44
and La was strictly TV and film you know
1:48
there was no Live Theater here but there
1:50
were music videos so I went to a couple
1:53
of music video auditions but it wasn't
1:56
my tribe so I kind of stepped back I
1:59
ended up in retail ended up in
2:02
entertainment PR which taught me a lot
2:04
about this town Hollywood and how we
2:07
interact with celebrities um I was an
2:10
assistant and I said to my boss one day
2:13
one of us must go or one of us is going
2:15
to
2:16
die said you know I worked in retail I
2:19
know a little bit about fashion I'd love
2:21
to explore this so he connected me with
2:24
a stylist I went in as her assistant I'd
2:27
never done it before but I figured how
2:30
difficult can this be I'm you're daring
2:32
you're willing to to jump out there and
2:34
try new things I love that and I was
2:37
also at that age where I was like I need
2:39
to do the next thing and our very first
2:43
photo shoot I'll never forget it was um
2:46
with Angie everheart and we were
2:49
shooting a cover of FHM the men's
2:51
magazine it was a big production and she
2:53
was like one of the supermodel girls and
2:55
as soon as she hit that seamless she was
2:58
on and I was like oh my God this is it
3:01
so you're here now and
3:04
and you've done you've had an amazing
3:07
career you're on to new and different
3:09
things what inspires you right
3:12
now God that's a good question because
3:15
the
3:16
industry a lot changed with the
3:19
pandemic and you know I went through a
3:21
period where I was teaching at fitm the
3:23
Fashion
3:24
Institute and with everything I tried to
3:27
share with them and prepare them
3:30
for the fashion industry I gained so
3:33
much knowledge from them because you
3:36
know my students were 19 to 23 yeah and
3:40
they had a different perspective on the
3:42
world they did things differently and I
3:45
found all of that fascinating I learned
3:48
so much from my students so now my new
3:51
project I'm working on I have a young 30
3:54
yearold digital content producer and I'm
3:58
learning from him and he's learning from
4:01
me as he prepares to do a big launch for
4:04
his fashion collection do you think
4:08
that at our age and like we're in our
4:11
60s being open to that and welcoming and
4:14
embracing learning from younger people I
4:18
feel like it keeps me young I want to be
4:20
around Youth and learn new things I
4:22
don't necessarily want to be stuck in
4:26
the past even though I know there are
4:27
certain areas I just don't get it
4:30
motivates me does that move you oh yeah
4:33
I agree and you know here's the reality
4:34
life moves
4:36
forward you know and things change you
4:40
know each generation brings something
4:42
different to the table and with Joseph
4:46
leading me through this project you know
4:49
I've learned how to understand you know
4:51
the metrics you know how to post how to
4:54
do my hashtags so it's been a great
4:59
learning experience and my numbers are
5:01
growing you know my metrics like my
5:04
impressions of people that I reach he
5:06
like this is insane it's unheard of so
5:09
real quick while you're talking about in
5:11
Instagram where can our community find
5:13
you on well it is called dashingly Todd
5:18
and it's to1 D only my mother did it I
5:21
had nothing to do with it um underscore
5:25
official Todd how do you want to be
5:28
remembered
5:30
oh wow
5:33
um you know I work every day to be the
5:36
man my mother raised me to
5:39
be some days I do better than others uh
5:43
I am very civically involved getting
5:46
chair of Public Safety for the city of
5:47
West Hollywood I am our Eastside
5:50
neighborhood watch Captain none of these
5:52
things I pursue they just kind of came
5:55
to me but I am my mother's son I like
5:58
people I like talking to people I like
6:01
helping people
6:06
and I don't have kids I always say I
6:09
don't really like them even though
6:11
jokingly I'm really good with kids and
6:14
when I
6:15
taught the irony is I come from a family
6:18
of teachers and my mother asked me um
6:21
she and her friends all went to buoy
6:23
State Teachers College in Maryland and
6:26
she said do you want to go I'm like no
6:27
I'm off to be a thespian so for to go
6:30
full circle and for me to teach and I
6:32
was so incredibly nervous I was like I
6:35
don't know how to write a syllabus I
6:36
know how to dance I know fashion but
6:39
when I found my rhythm I found I loved
6:42
it
6:44
so I would just like to give back with
6:48
the knowledge and gifts that I've been
6:51
blessed with I think that you impact
6:55
people from the point that you come from
7:00
and and that can only be a positive
7:02
thing and I think clearly I mean you've
7:04
shared stories in the past about your
7:06
experience at fit and your impact is
7:09
profound and I think that's why you
7:11
because you had that foundation so but I
7:14
still am in touch with a lot of my
7:16
students a lot of them are doing very
7:18
very well and they're like you know we
7:20
listen to what you said Mr hman so
7:23
that's a very nice thing I have to ask
7:26
you because this is life uncored after
7:29
all what's what's your favorite wine I
7:32
do love a
7:33
rosé I remember having fabulous wines
7:36
with you at the V wine bar I'm not big
7:39
on dessert or sweet wines that's not
7:41
really yeah I prefer PK you know if it
7:44
gets to that point ni Rich yes what's
7:49
next for you Mr hman well
7:54
um I am very excited about dashingly
7:57
Todd on Instagram and
7:59
I am too I'm just going to tell yall out
8:01
there follow it is the funnest side and
8:04
you will learn so much and have fun
8:06
watching it oh thank you and you know
8:09
you follow you know my regular we call
8:12
it a civilian page but dashingly taught
8:15
is all style and fashion and it allows
8:18
me to do what I do well and share and
8:21
it's also you know I learned because I
8:23
used to blog
8:25
and you know I am competitive with
8:28
Myself and I would get press releases
8:30
and I'm like oh my God this collection
8:32
just dropped I've got a Blog about it
8:34
I'm going to get it up first and
8:35
sometimes I would post before a lot of
8:38
major Outlets posted and I'd be like yes
8:40
I beat them to it so it's kind of the
8:43
same thing on Instagram and what I love
8:45
with Instagram you know I see works of
8:49
designers from all around the world um
8:52
and get to see what they're doing and I
8:54
save you know their pages so if I'm ever
8:58
doing a client or a music video or
9:00
special project I'm like oh this
9:02
designer would be perfect I can reach
9:04
out to them so yeah I love the world of
9:07
Instagram and also sharing things with
9:09
people
9:11
because you know there's so much out
9:15
there but I'm not
9:17
done by any
9:19
stretch so much I want to do um so I'm
9:23
enjoying this you know juncture and you
9:26
know just trying to hold on to the face
9:28
and
9:30
well thank you again and we will keep
9:33
our eyes on dashingly Todd on Instagram
9:37
and for everything wonderful that's
9:39
coming for you well thank you and it's
9:41
so great Mel to chat with you I know I
9:44
don't get to see you that much for the
9:46
next time you're in La please let's go
9:47
to V wine and have a good time
9:49
absolutely that would be great all right
9:51
y'all till next time take care drink
9:54
some good wine and ciao
