I'm Karen Glasser here and welcome to
0:09
life on Cork and today we are doing a
0:12
segment called Aging like a fine wine
0:14
and I am sitting here with my good good
0:17
good friend actor singer producer Joan
0:20
Ryan welcome to the show hello there hi
0:24
Karen I'm so happy to be here I am
0:26
thrilled thrilled thrill thrilled that
0:28
you're here um you know you have said to
0:30
me many many times that there is never
0:33
an end date to our dreams right that's
0:36
true that fear and doubt are always part
0:38
of the equation when you dream and feel
0:41
the fear do it anyways I have Goosebumps
0:44
I only have Goosebumps when things are
0:46
right so I just got right right and this
0:48
is how you've you've LED your life so
0:50
let's talk just briefly about the
0:53
Journey of getting from Little Joe and
0:55
Ryan to where you are today tell us a
0:59
little bit about that
1:00
well let's see I've always always known
1:02
that I wanted to be a performer always
1:05
from the time I was four years old as
1:06
anyone who came to our family home would
1:08
testify when I made them sit down and
1:10
you know danced on the furniture um
1:13
which took me to theater school which
1:14
brought me to La um always thought that
1:18
I would end up in New York and I worked
1:22
here in Los Angeles all the time off
1:24
Broadway Los Angeles recording around
1:26
the country um and um and then I met
1:30
someone and fell in love and we raised a
1:32
family lo and behold here in LA in La um
1:35
and so I would leave for periods of time
1:38
to go work but what can I say I love
1:41
being with my kids and my husband so I
1:43
would not take a Broadway show um
1:45
because it would take me away for too
1:47
long so um was that hard was that hard
1:51
to say
1:52
no um no because I always knew that that
1:55
would come I always had a really strong
1:58
faith that when the time was right it
1:59
would come and when our youngest left um
2:02
for college my husband said okay let's
2:04
go and we went to New York and it was
2:07
pretty incredible within um Not only was
2:10
it so much fun but I sang uh and
2:12
produced a show at Carnegie Hall and I
2:14
sang at L Center stop for a second you
2:16
just kind of said that you oh yeah I did
2:20
what was that like I mean that's pretty
2:22
incredible to say that singing at
2:24
Carnegie Hall was everything you would
2:28
think it would be it was
2:30
amazing um and it was very exciting
2:33
because I got to produce the evening for
2:36
um an organization very close to my
2:38
heart um Shane's inspiration now called
2:41
inclusion Matters by Shane's inspiration
2:44
um so it wasn't only about me and it's
2:47
interesting how that works right because
2:50
I was having an amazing time living out
2:53
my New York dream and my husband was
2:55
there with me right um and then this
2:59
came about and it was the culmination of
3:01
everything but it came about
3:03
through something that was not about me
3:06
so it was an incredible experience we
3:08
had major Broadway people and amazing
3:11
amazing I mean first of all a as your
3:15
friend I'm so proud of you I just I just
3:19
so so so amazing what's driving you
3:21
right now at this stage in life and you
3:23
know because things are changing right
3:25
so what is driving you to keep on
3:28
going well I think first and foremost I
3:31
love it so much um about a year ago I
3:35
did I was able to play um very exciting
3:38
in a a carrian and louder milk Premiere
3:41
uh Broadway musical I was able to play
3:43
Ruth Vader Ginsburg just as everything
3:46
was getting kind of crazy or continuing
3:48
to be crazy um and I took that because I
3:51
was so excited about about what it was
3:54
and I do turn things down at this stage
3:57
of my life that aren't exciting to me so
4:00
I think what what motivates me is if it
4:03
feels like it will be an incredible
4:05
experience like if it feels like it will
4:07
satisfy you know I always talk about
4:09
that pilot light that doesn't go out
4:11
right from the time we're little and I
4:13
also think that you're never too late to
4:15
go after that pilot light because you're
4:17
God willing you're going to turn 90 80
4:20
100 anyway what else are you going to do
4:23
you might as well go after what you want
4:25
to do and it just might work I love that
4:28
I love that and and I love you so
4:31
obviously you're already being
4:32
inspirational just in the words that
4:34
you're saying but is there is there
4:36
something that you know somebody were to
4:38
come to you and say Joanie you know how
4:41
do you keep going like this can you give
4:43
me something to motivate me to maybe do
4:46
something different in this next stage
4:48
what would you be telling people well
4:50
it's not like it's easy and I also think
4:53
it's really really really important to
4:55
surround yourself with people that help
4:58
you get there coaches inspirational
5:02
people Rel whatever it takes you know I
5:05
personally work with a coach um and I
5:08
don't always stay with the same coach I
5:09
might work with one coach and then I
5:10
might move to another coach but it it's
5:13
who is going to help me get to the next
5:15
place at the time and also for me
5:18
personally this is not necessarily
5:20
correct for everyone I'm really grateful
5:23
I have a family that I've worked really
5:25
hard to um for and
5:30
um and there are times when my career
5:31
didn't always come first and my family
5:34
knows that there are times when my
5:35
career comes first right and so they
5:38
kind of drive me because they're like
5:40
okay what's next time for you to do
5:42
something because they know what that is
5:44
for me so would you say you're by
5:45
Coastal at this point you're you're
5:47
spending part of your time of the year
5:48
in New York and part of the time here in
5:50
Los Angeles absolutely um go ahead sorry
5:54
I said to my husband last night you know
5:56
It's tricky because in New York what I
5:59
love it's go go go and I can go sing and
6:01
then go out for dinner with people and
6:03
visit with all my friends and it's
6:05
nonstop and then I come home and it used
6:09
to be I would say re-entry is really
6:11
hard um but then I was able to embrace
6:14
it because that would be my downtime
6:16
where I could recharge be with my family
6:19
be with my friends that are here and
6:21
then go back and do that non-stop pace
6:24
and I used to feel guilty about not
6:26
being at either place and then I said
6:29
you know what it's really okay it works
6:32
for me for the family would would you
6:35
say that this is the best time of your
6:39
life
6:40
wow well aside from losses because
6:43
there's lots of right losses at this age
6:48
friends dying parents dying which sort
6:51
of colors things no kidding um it's one
6:55
of the best times in my life I don't uh
6:59
I don't think I I can quantify that
7:03
because going for Carnegie Hall was the
7:04
best time in my life raising my kids was
7:06
the best time in my life having babies
7:09
um when the kids were SM like so
7:12
important really good question Joan what
7:15
you're saying is that every moment can
7:17
be the best moment of your life it's all
7:21
how you how you decide to show up and
7:23
you are always showing up very very big
7:26
I mean because you first of all you for
7:28
anyone who never heard Joan sing shame
7:31
shame shame you are known for your big
7:34
voice you have a very big Broadway voice
7:37
you did ruthless you were you know that
7:40
was your your show here you you've been
7:43
on television Young and the Restless you
7:45
do voice you do everything and you do it
7:47
in a very big way but very humble way
7:52
you're very humble about your talent
7:54
because you are extremely Talent so I
7:56
guess the next question really leads us
7:58
into what's next for Joan Ryan what do
8:01
you what do you have on your plate well
8:04
you know I I am hooy Louie and I do
8:07
visualize all the things that I want and
8:08
they seem to come to come true um I want
8:12
another musical whether it's in LA or
8:14
New York I'm ready but I'm going to be
8:17
very specific because I did get one that
8:19
I didn't choose to do but it was um but
8:22
I did get it um I want a really fun
8:27
fabulous part in new
8:30
musical and it could be La it could be
8:32
New York that is what I want that's
8:35
what's next in my and you want to have
8:37
fun and you want to enjoy because when
8:40
we get to this this age whatever age
8:42
you're at I mean we're talking to people
8:44
that are 50 60 70 80 whatever age you're
8:47
at enjoy the stage that you're in that's
8:51
right Joan I know that people going to
8:52
want to follow you if they aren't
8:54
already again I'm going to say shame um
8:56
they need to go check out your website
8:58
it's all new I know that you totally
9:00
redone it and it's Joan's website at
9:02
Joan ran.com you're also on Facebook at
9:07
the official Joan Ryan and also on
9:09
Instagram at the official Joan Ryan any
9:15
last thoughts you want to share with
9:17
everyone who's listening to your amazing
9:19
story I think the thing that I've had to
9:23
work really hard
9:25
against um and that I think so many of
9:28
us have to be quite is self-doubt and if
9:31
all the work in your life or a lot of
9:33
the work goes there then everything else
9:35
seems to materialize because maybe it
9:38
takes getting to this age where you get
9:40
to see the truth that everybody has
9:42
self-doubt everybody has confidence it
9:44
just depends on where you are at the
9:46
time um I think I could have shortcut a
9:50
lot of things or or had more fun when I
9:52
was doing them because now it's kind of
9:54
gravy now that that's in my bones it's
9:58
amazing how even my performances are
10:02
different because there's not that Push
10:05
Pull so I think that's where the
10:07
desperation you're you're now you're now
10:09
in it yeah I'm now in the good stage and
10:12
then everything else is Right blessings
10:15
well we've been talking to Joan Ryan who
10:17
is aging like a fine wine and we are all
10:21
here on life Uncorked uh go out give
10:24
somebody an awesome day and we'll see
10:25
you next time thank you so much Karen
10:28
thanks bye
