hello everyone Karen Glasser here and
0:11
welcome to life Uncorked today's segment
0:13
is called Aging like a fine wine and I'm
0:16
here with Sonia leco she's the owner of
0:18
the West Los Angeles chefs for seniors
0:21
good afternoon Sonia how are you today I
0:25
great thank you for having me Karen this
0:27
is lovely I am so thrilled to have this
0:30
conversation and this is all about
0:31
people ordinary people who do
0:33
extraordinary things and you're one of
0:35
them um let's talk a little bit about
0:37
your story and then how you got to where
0:40
you are today take us back just a little
0:42
bit how did you get here well I would
0:45
like to
0:46
um started with then I came in the
0:49
United States in
0:51
1997 I am Italian and swiss um raised in
0:57
Switzerland from Italian parent and uh
1:00
when I came in 1997 because I fell in
1:03
love with the my
1:07
husband we who I met in
1:10
Switzerland and um so it was the um
1:15
Valentine's Day on 1997 when I came here
1:18
and the first things I learned and
1:22
embraced and I was really happy about
1:25
that in the United
1:27
States for me has been very easy to to
1:30
reinvent myself ah reinvention I love
1:33
that I love that reinvented myself and I
1:36
could have the opportunity to look into
1:39
myself and see okay what do I want to do
1:41
when I grow
1:43
up I was in my 30 so and um and from
1:48
then it's has been an exploration and uh
1:52
I went to I started uh I continue
1:56
actually my education special education
1:59
here in the United States uh from where
2:02
I left off in Switzerland and I signed
2:06
up for classes then I went to Cate
2:08
Northridge and I got my BA in child
2:12
development and at that time my son was
2:15
four years old and I a couple of years
2:20
later that I graduated I bought my son's
2:23
preschool basically the preschool where
2:25
my son used to go oh wow little
2:28
preschool in Venice
2:30
California and uh I ran it for almost 10
2:33
years and uh then I sold in
2:37
2018 and uh I decided again to look into
2:40
myself say now I a little older but I'm
2:44
still growing up what I wanted to yes
2:47
and uh so I wanted to put together my
2:51
passion for cooking because I was raised
2:54
in a family where the Italian family
2:58
where then the and the cooking it's
3:01
important is uh eating it's important it
3:05
brings the family together right yes and
3:08
so I like I wanted to I always like to
3:12
cook and and uh love making pasta from
3:15
scratch and so I wanted to do a business
3:19
because now you know I once you have
3:21
your own business start to go back
3:23
working with someone else I wanted to
3:25
continue working for myself being my own
3:28
boss and maybe having people working
3:30
with me and so when I was researching
3:34
for um something to do in in with the
3:38
cooking and came across to Chef for
3:41
seniors this uh FR and the franchise
3:45
opportunity um I looked it I fill out
3:49
those three lines of information I sent
3:52
it out and they call me within five
3:54
minutes wow and I think they liked me
3:59
and I like them and their purpose and
4:03
and Chef being founded by the father and
4:05
the son in Madison Wisconsin I I love
4:09
this and you and what my audience
4:11
doesn't know is that I actually met you
4:13
through chefs for seniors yes in
4:16
researching how to make sure that my
4:19
parents who are seniors get um healthy
4:23
delicious meals in and you know at their
4:25
home and a little bit about chefs for
4:28
seniors this is not your traditional
4:30
they send you food and it's in these
4:31
little packages how does chefs for
4:33
seniors work Chef for senior does um
4:37
basically um when I received the phone
4:41
call and I set up an appointment with
4:44
the with the potential clients and I go
4:47
to the home I sit down with them and I
4:49
go through a questioner likes and
4:52
dislikes what they uh what their goal is
4:56
what their needs are and uh and then we
5:00
send a a chef the chef in the house of
5:04
the seniors so that live independently
5:07
and uh we have our own pots and pants
5:10
but we're happy to use the client
5:13
equipment for needed uh the chef buy the
5:17
groceries that need to execute the meal
5:20
so they don't have to worry that about
5:23
buy py what they need so the chef Cooks
5:27
uh put in containers that can be stored
5:30
in the refrigerator in the freezer and
5:33
then uh cleans up which is very
5:36
important always the client ask does she
5:38
clean up after right yes yeah what I
5:42
what I realize with my parents is first
5:44
of all the food is delicious there's
5:46
there's that companionship here's the
5:48
chef that becomes your reg almost like a
5:50
family that comes in it's once a week
5:52
every two weeks there she she or he are
5:54
making food uh for the individuals in
5:57
the household based upon their uh
6:00
dietary issues you know low salt maybe
6:02
it's kosher maybe it's vegetarian
6:04
whatever it is and you provide that
6:06
service and I am fascinated by this
6:10
because I didn't even know this thing
6:11
existed and I'm thrilled that you did
6:14
the research and found them because this
6:16
is literally a national company right
6:18
this is not it is when I bought into
6:21
shefford seniors in it was like
6:25
2019 um I was number 41 in in as a
6:31
franchisee and I was uh only we were two
6:35
in the in California that time now I
6:38
think they uh closed the 20 23 years
6:41
with 95 96 franchises right and uh we
6:47
are 12 or 13 here in California so
6:50
that's amazing that's an amazing growth
6:53
obviously um so you know I have to
6:56
really ask you what drives you now in
6:59
this stage of your life I mean you're
7:01
doing chefs for seniors you just you did
7:03
your research you started in 2019 it's
7:06
2023 you're growing what's what's
7:08
actually driving you why do you keep it
7:11
it is giving back a little bit you know
7:13
giving back a little because it's it's a
7:15
service it's something that I can help
7:20
people can provide I've been very
7:22
fortunate in my life and uh so I want to
7:26
do something that's as a as a meaning as
7:30
that it's helpful and when I purchase
7:34
into the
7:35
franchise and talking with the franchis
7:38
with Nathan and Barrett Allen all men
7:42
sorry and they
7:44
um I the first impression after hang up
7:47
the phone with them said this is a
7:49
business with a heart and that's really
7:52
what I wanted oh that's that's wonderful
7:54
so you know I always like to ask my
7:56
guests this question that makes you
7:58
think and and that is how do you want to
8:00
be remembered as we as we travel on this
8:03
journey called life and we have kids you
8:06
have you have you know kids how do you
8:08
want to be remembered do you want your
8:09
kids to remember you in a certain way
8:11
maybe as they get older and they have
8:12
kids themselves the grandkids
8:13
remembering you how do you want to be
8:15
remembered about the good smell in my
8:18
kitchen oh what a wonderful answer that
8:21
that that that's it if I because that's
8:25
what I remember from my childhood in
8:29
images and this mess so that that to me
8:33
when I think there are some moments that
8:35
the hard in life and that I do this and
8:39
and I smell my
8:42
grandma's cooking oh I love that I
8:46
love so Sonia what's next for you I know
8:49
you're going to continue doing this are
8:51
do you have other aspirations as well
8:54
well it's um I try to grow the business
8:57
much as possible obviously
9:00
and um I am part of this um organization
9:06
called Senior Services Foundation SSP
9:10
and we are uh trying to get more
9:13
involved with them and what we do is
9:16
also provide services in general for
9:19
seniors and they have in California
9:22
different chapters so I hope to be a
9:25
little bit um a p voice and in in that
9:31
and what a great what a great um
9:33
collaboration having you with the food
9:36
and the the nurturing and this
9:37
everything it's beautiful for those were
9:40

10:20
food it's
10:23
at the
10:25
table it's um somehow it's connect
10:30
people and so and that's what I really
10:34
would like to do would like to continue
10:36
to cook for the my uh for the other
10:39
people especially when those she just
10:41
not for the people and with the hope
10:44
that bring their family together sharing
10:47
the meals we prepared and connect people
10:51
through food that's that's wonderful
