0:00
hello everyone Karen glasser here and welcome to this episode of The Passion point this is the show where we follow
0:06
fashionistas from all around the world who are following their passion making a living doing what they love and I am
0:13
more than just excited today I have been waiting for this interview for quite a while and we have the amazing Nicole
0:20
Holland with us she is the host of itunes new and noteworthy podcast which all by itself is really cool because a
0:26
lot of people can't even get to that stage at all it's called the business building rock stars show and Nicole
0:31
helps entrepreneurs grilled profitable online businesses that excite and inspire them you can find a coal
0:38
wandering through the vineyards of Nick Nick Niagara Ontario's I didn't know we
0:43
had anything Niagara there we had one here when not working with clients or creating killer content she especially
0:49
loves exploring old buildings or snuggling with her rescue cats we have so much in common achill welcome to the
0:55
show thank you Karen I'm so excited I've been waiting a long time to hang out with you officially on the show as well
1:02
as well and you know I say we have a lot in common i live in Napa where we have a lot of vineyards here so we can go and
1:08
virtually drink our wine together which would be awesome definitely I like to start the show with the definition of
1:14
passion a Webster's dictionary says that passion is an intense driving or overmastering feeling or conviction what
1:21
does nicole say what's passion to you for me passion is yeah that drive just
1:28
that knowing that feeling that you're going in the right direction it's something that lights you up and is
1:33
exciting and fun just all that good stuff yeah and it's interesting you know
1:39
there's so many ways to describe passion but but what it really comes down to is it for most people and when they explain
1:44
it it comes from within it gets you want to jump out of bed and do whatever it is that you're doing even when you don't
1:49
want to jump out of bed and do whatever you want to do so let's talk about you because this this is a show about our
1:55
passion ESA's tell us how you got to where you are today goes far back as you want and tell us a little bit about your
2:02
journey so that our viewers can see how you created this incredible industry for
2:07
yourself tell us about yourself well thanks for asking and I'm not going to go very far back because of
2:13
short amount of time I just launched the business building rock star brand about
2:19
a year ago about a year ago from now when we're actually broadcasting this so
2:24
I had a background in corporate training in marketing and in coaching but I had
2:32
gotten like way off path and for like lots of twists and turns to be to
2:38
working for the government as a correctional officer and so yeah I did that wow you can see you probably better
2:45
like whoa what I had I had done foster care for a while then I wound up working
2:50
also in youth justice and then one thing led to another I wound up working in the adult system with like bad men like
2:57
murderers and rapists and just bad people and I got to a really low point
3:03
in my life and I realized I just couldn't go on and and I didn't know what I was going to do I just knew that
3:08
I was not going to continue doing that and so december twenty eight twenty
3:13
fourteen was my official last day as an officer and I quit and I had no plan and
3:19
I had nothing and I didn't have any connections or any knowledge of the online space and so once I quit I really
3:26
started searching like desperately searching for the answer right for the direction of okay I've got all this
3:33
knowledge and experience in the past how can I apply it today I had been out of
3:39
business for over ten years so I thought how can I build a business start from
3:44
scratch today using the web and leveraging you know allowing myself to
3:51
have that independent location independent and all that good stuff right all that stuff that you dream
3:56
about and you think is it possible for me yes it's possible to go for it and what I was finding was I had a lot of I
4:02
found a lot of people who wanted to help me so I thought but the truth of the matter was they wanted me to pay them
4:08
and they didn't care about me they didn't care about delivering on promises and so I invested all over the place
4:14
because again I'm in this like desperate space of okay just quit my job I know about I know I have the ability i know
4:21
i'm a smart girl I know I can do this I just have the tools i don't know the house i
4:27
started just i believed people i'm kind of gullible like that and i just started investing and not then seeing the
4:35
results or i would talk to a coach and say you know again I'm pretty I'm pretty Frank I'm pretty up front and say like
4:42
if somebody asks me to do something I can't do it I'm going to tell them I can't do that I'll try and help you find
4:47
the right person but I can't and I kind of expect people to treat me like that too and so I would tell people here's
4:53
what i'm looking for here's my strength here's my deficit can you help me oh yes yes they would take my money but they
4:58
would not be the right fit so I saw this over and over again in a short period of time I was working with people who were
5:05
all wrong fit because I was taking the advice of the smart guru the gap yeah
5:11
who I was paying you know 18 grand for this one program this excellent program um and it was insane and I was working
5:20
with people because I could do some things and I was miserable and I was like you know what bunk this and this
5:26
was um in I would say it was kind of crescendoing from about March 2015 till
5:35
about jun 2015 where I was just like no more I'm taking a stand I think this is
5:40
I'm sick and tired of what's happening in this industry I'm taking a stand against it and what I wanted was a
5:48
resource I wanted people of integrity that would just say here's a little bit of this here's a little bit of that here
5:54
all these options for you Nicole there are so many options there is no right way I hold there's a right way there is
6:02
no right way so here's a choice here's a choice here's a choice so let's give you all these choices up front and let you
6:09
make that informed decision and that was the birth of the business building rockstar summit because I couldn't find it that's awesome that is awesome
6:17
because I I feel the same way you do a lot of those gurus out there and they're still out there trust me they're still
6:23
out there and they're still messing with people that are trying to do what you did what I did and they're taking money
6:28
and people are going broke and I asked my soapbox I mean that is just so I'm really glad that you took a took action
6:34
so tell us about the show tell us about what you decided to do you awesome so at that point um yeah I'm
6:42
just like assuming I'm like it's like we're talking like you know what I do i forgot know there's listeners here too heavily I no idea so what I decided was
6:50
to create an online summit and so for people who don't know what an online summit is it's basically like a
6:57
conference or a convention where there's lots of speakers lots of people training and teaching about different aspects of
7:04
a business or you know in this case business but instead of having to go somewhere and you know get a hotel and
7:11
gas and flight and food and all that stuff you can do it online from the
7:17
comfort of your own home and so I found out about summit shortly before I quit
7:22
my job who was actually maressa murgatroyd's I'm super hero summit that really gave me that push and belief that
7:28
I could do it in this day and age and that I quit my job from that so i
7:35
created the summit the business building rockstar summit where I brought together 30 experts on 30 different topics
7:42
business building topics I interviewed them and recorded the interviews and broadcast them and so the summit was
7:50
free to attend you could just give me your email address to register and you get this access so that was the birth of
7:56
the brand and from there I wanted to continue the conversation with people so
8:03
people got so much value from the summit itself and they learn so much but then
8:08
they're like what next right so I decided to create the business building rockstar show which is the podcast you
8:14
mentioned in the intro and that's where the conversation continues and you were on my on my show very glad to have you
8:21
as well I kept from exactly if it's going to be before after this air is that our interview and that goes but in
8:28
that show in that podcast it gets more intimate so the business building Rockstar summit is very topical it's one
8:36
expert per topic and we talk about the nuts and bolts of how to but we really
8:42
don't get into the story of the person who's teaching so I wanted to open that
8:48
door a little bit more and with the podcast I interview entrepreneurs who are killing in the
8:55
field who are people who I personally respect and admire and I ask them about
9:00
their own personal journey their own story and so that's the show now the
9:05
summit is an annual event and just so happens that the next one is coming up very shortly so November first two tents
9:13
this year is when it's running and there are far more than 30 people this year
9:18
it's going to be awesome and guys I want to let you know that the link to the show is right below there and even if
9:24
you're watching this on replay and further on you can still contact nicole so i just wanted to make sure you guys
9:29
know because you need to sign up for this it's going to be awesome it is it really is and I hate to toot my own horn
9:35
but you know I'm only the catalyst I'm only the person who is kind of pushing it together but it is really the
9:42
momentum is amazing we talk about passion I'm so passionate about this I've brought together people who are
9:47
passionate about topics and it's just it's a beautiful unfolding and yeah it's
9:53
so it is free to attend in like during the thing so for people who are catching
10:00
the replay you can absolutely still catch up it is there is an option to upgrade to the all-access pass so after
10:07
the tenth of November of course it will be bye-bye purchase however this is an
10:14
annual event so if you get connected next year it'll be another one if you did miss this so and you've got some
10:21
amazing people that are participating in this I mean you have in very short amount of time you you were on iTunes
10:27
new and noteworthy which is really hard to do with all the stuff that gets thrown out you know on the wall we throw
10:33
it out from some of it sticks I'm a dozen and you have made quite a name for yourself and quite a place in this whole
10:39
online world so you have some major names that are going to be joining you and not so major names that are just as
10:45
bright and as brilliant as the big names and so I think that's really really cool
10:51
I'm sure that you are the right person for somebody to come too because you've been through this and like what am I
10:56
going to do I left my job and you know all these people are throwing stuff at me and I'm paying all this money I don't
11:02
even know what my passion is what do you tell us that when it comes to you and says Nicole this is all good and well but I don't
11:09
know what my passion is how do you how do you help them yeah so that's a bit of a bigger nut to crack then like just
11:17
yeah well here take you know take these two pills and call me in the morning um
11:22
sometimes we're so beat down you know like I mean that's where I was I knew I
11:29
had that passion inside of me I knew it was there before I knew I could uncover it again but it's not something that you
11:35
can just expect to happen overnight what
11:40
I'm passionate about is helping people essentially and I think one of the ways
11:45
that you can really tap into that passion is if you allow yourself to really explore when you were a child
11:52
before you learned all of the rules what was possible what wasn't and you get
11:57
really honest with yourself and you and you check out like back then what did you want to be when you grew up and even
12:04
if it was something that was impossible there's a good chance very good chance
12:09
that whatever it was there was a thread of a trait that applies to something
12:17
still so even if it was something fantastical like you know superwoman
12:23
there's something there again maybe it's helping people maybe it's um the desire
12:30
to and I don't really know superwoman that well so maybe that wasn't the best idea but even somebody who was like I
12:35
want to be President and you know maybe now you don't really want to be President but but maybe you you want to
12:41
fight for the rights and the the betterment of a community you know maybe
12:47
community service or there's so many different things um that I mean anything
12:52
the world is your oyster but really tapping into that little inner child and saying what was it I really was excited
13:00
about before I knew I wasn't supposed to be excited about it I believe that we all come into this world man everybody's
13:06
got to police but I believe we all come into this world with that higher purpose or that mission you know and we can
13:13
either live it or ignore it and most people in this world do ignore it
13:18
and you know but when you live it you're unstoppable so what do you say to people
13:25
that have left their jlb you know they're 925 and they're a little bit
13:30
older I mean they're not in there you know their youth even though I still think I'm in my youth and I'm a little
13:36
bit older but would you tell people that you know are now finding out that they have to now reinvent themselves or
13:42
recreate themselves or do something because instead of saying I'm unemployed most people don't like to say that they
13:48
say they're an entrepreneur because somehow that makes it better in some way and yet you and I both know being an
13:55
entrepreneur is not the easiest job in the world no matter what you're doing because it's just you it's it's just me
14:01
and we are working more hours than we ever worked nine to five so how do you or do you set an individual up to at
14:09
least understand or have the expectation that it is going to take a lot of work whatever it is if they're going to do so
14:16
that they can live the way they want to live later on in life how do you even talk about this because it's people
14:22
don't believe it they just think you know you're an entrepreneur you can work whatever you want yeah yeah great
14:27
question and actually that's a big part of my podcast is let's look behind
14:33
closed doors because it's not as simple as it appears every overnight success is
14:39
yours in the making there's no such thing you know people might say oh my gosh this happened so fast you weren't unknown you are a correctional officer
14:45
all the sudden you know you've got people like Dorie Clark and Bob Burke
14:50
and you've got all these people who like you and who share your stuff and you
14:55
know you're getting featured here you're getting this and that like I I put in a
15:02
lot of work that other people aren't willing to and again I didn't start like
15:07
I wasn't just a correctional officer I was a correctional officer who starred in her career in sports marketing back
15:14
in 1994 I was a correctional officer who previously had a corporate training firm of her own I was a correctional officer
15:20
who had a lot of different stuff education wise and experienced wise so I
15:26
wasn't just a correctional officer there's never one you know there's never one thing you
15:32
are your your life is a compilation of experiences and I don't know what I look
15:37
like now I mean I've got purple hair I don't know what people would pick me up but I mean I'm 40 so it's not like I'm
15:43
just you know I'm happy-go-lucky and just getting lucky and you know I've got
15:48
I've had more of and it's scary you know to leave a quote unquote secure job you
15:53
know you're going to get that paycheck and to have no security um but I think
15:59
the question one of the questions to ask is what do you want your life to look
16:05
like I say congratulations if somebody gets laid off or it's funny cuz I've a client and he told me that he had gotten
16:14
laid off some months ago and my response was congratulations and he didn't say anything to me at the time but I was
16:20
like celebrating you know till I told me a couple of months later after he got his new job which was super stressful
16:26
you know he has children a wife they have a you know and but he did get a new job and he said you know I didn't
16:34
understand when you said to me congratulations before but I didn't realize how miserable I was I knew I was
16:42
unhappy been realize how miserable until now and I'm like exactly and that's what I went through to i was i was getting
16:49
through the day i was surviving but i wasn't thriving and i think those of us who are older especially sometimes the
16:56
best thing that can happen is that layoff or that right that transition
17:01
because without that you can't open the next chapter and then say what do I want
17:07
what do I want my life to look like what do I want to do is really anything's
17:12
possible if you desire it you have to take actions congruent with the desire but there are no limitations you are
17:19
only one limiting yourself right and when I hear people you know the mindset people that talk about a lot of people
17:24
misunderstand mindset people when they say just think about it and it's it's going to happen like Napoleon Hill you
17:30
know they can grow rich well yes you have to put that mindset and you you
17:35
have to believe it you have to you know really think that you can do it because you can you really can but if you don't
17:41
take action that's the thing you can't then say well it doesn't work if you're not taking action every single day of
17:48
your life even on the weekends guys every single day of your life that's going to be a problem you're not going
17:54
to get to where you want to go and it's not going to be anybody's fault but your own that have experts helping and i
18:00
think i just want to mention one more thing there about my texts I'm a law of attraction girl so it is a hundred
18:06
percent true what you said and there's another piece to that what happens generally is okay we've got this great
18:13
mindset and this is what I see a lot because I have a free challenge called the mastermind challenge we're actually
18:19
walk people through Napoleon Hills book thinking grow rich and so people say oh
18:25
yeah okay I've got the mindset and okay I'm understanding this and it's like yeah but you're focusing on the what's
18:30
lacking and this I can say this and I hope your listeners are really listening and taking this in but they probably may
18:37
need to hear it a few times it shouldn't a problem because everybody's different but you may need to hear it a few times I know I did and still sometimes I
18:45
forget and I have to be you know snapped out of it you when you think about this
18:50
is what I want you can visualize all day long and you can do the actions to bring
18:56
it in but you're gonna have days and before we started recording and caring you and I were both talking like
19:01
it's a day for us or you know we're kind of like in a spunky space and we can either choose to focus on what's
19:08
going wrong or quicker and recognize it's a day and focus on what's
19:15
going right and I think that's the biggest thing that most people miss and they're like okay I'm doing all the
19:21
right things I'm focused on my outcome I'm visualizing I'm doing all this mind body spirit stuff people talk about and
19:28
I'm still not getting the results I want and the biggest reason I see for that happening is because no matter how much
19:35
you tell yourself if you don't internalize and truly understand that
19:40
when you focus on what's missing you're getting more of what's missing right you
19:46
have to focus on what's working and what's working well and that soundboard
19:51
is a huge piece that most people don't understand yeah and I totally agree with you and I also look
19:56
you know where you used the explanation when somebody uses loses their job or
20:02
they get laid off congratulations I like to tell people it's a great opportunity that you think given one door closes
20:08
it's a cliche but it's true when one door closes the window is open but if you're not looking for the window you're
20:14
going to miss it and there and therein lies the problem with just thinking and
20:22
you know it's going to happen you mentioned leverage earlier on in the conversation let's talk a little bit
20:27
about leverage because you know how much I love the idea of leveraging what we do I'd rather work smarter than harder quite frankly so tell us a little bit
20:33
how you leverage what you are doing because I think it's a very good instructional kind of message for our
20:40
viewers and our listeners well everything I do is really focused on leverage and it's that that's looking at
20:46
the ROI looking at the return on investment so would you rather do one
20:51
thing 50 times or do wait one thing 50 times or Jose goes I do 50 things one
20:58
time that doesn't make any sense but yeah 50 things one time right oh I would rather put in more work in doing
21:05
something that's repeatable and also that is shareable so for example
21:12
creating this summit I'm putting a lot of work into but sorry I have like an itchy nose um but I also have amazing
21:21
partners like yourself who are giving me interview opportunities or who are
21:27
sharing with your email list or so I'm creating this one thing and I'm putting heaps of work into it but then I have
21:33
all these other people who see the value in what I do who are sharing about it with their audience that is a huge
21:41
leveraged thing whereas I could put a huge amount of work into something and
21:47
then I could fight uphill to try and get to all of the people that need it you
21:53
have people in your audience that are going to benefit from my summit but there's no way I could reach them without your help and so that's one of
22:00
the ways that i like to use leveraged opportunities by creating something of value that other people also feel good
22:08
about that i've kind of proven myself to who are willing to
22:13
share about what I'm doing with their people who already trust them right and I think you're a perfect person for
22:20
somebody to talk to because you do these podcasts you you you're very comfortable online you're very comfortable behind a
22:25
camera obviously and in front of a microphone and a lot of people it's it doesn't have to be so hard and I think
22:33
people think that if it's online it must be difficult because different
22:39
generations are entering this online world at different times right and you know you said you're 40 I'm 60 and so I
22:46
I know that it doesn't matter what age you are if it's something that I'm if
22:51
you're passionate about it i'm passionate about being online i'm passionate about doing what i do because i like to share people like you and I
22:57
talk with my hands too I like to share people like you especially like you who can talk the talk but also walk the walk
23:06
because as we talked about a little bit earlier about the gurus and the people that come on and I'm going to make you rich and i'm going to this all you have
23:12
to do is that and when in fact a lot of these guys and gals are not really as
23:17
successful as we would like them or them would like us to think they are and so
23:23
it's a challenge I know from my perspective to find the real people the people that really have the intent to
23:30
help and to show up in service I mean is is that right is that something that
23:35
also drives you is that you know that you're making a big difference a hundred percent and i'll also say that you know
23:44
i appreciate the compliment that I am comfortable on camera on the microphone
23:49
but I have to tell you I'm not comfortable at all on camera I hate video interviews I hate webinars I don't
23:56
feel comfortable at all I'm comfortable with you and I'm doing it anyways that's what it boils down to I don't actually
24:03
love being on video I'm extremely introverted and I'm I am comfortable on
24:09
the mic now but definitely not on video and I'm sitting here like fiddling as we're talking about you know where I'm
24:15
sitting here fiddling with lights like oh my gosh it's you know dark I don't know what to do and if I put the lid on
24:20
it's all bright and comfortable know doing it you're doing it anyway I mean
24:26
my nose is itching I'm a mess um and I will say that you know i get from a lot
24:32
of people that I'm a good interviewer and I love to interview people and there's where that passion comes in i
24:37
found something I enjoyed but I had never done an interview before until
24:43
just over a year ago where I interviewed a jmx for the 2015 business building Rockstar summit first interview ever and
24:50
I lost count but I've probably done by now over two hundred interviews so just
24:59
in a year I think so when you make the decision that you're going to do something despite the discomfort you do
25:07
it and you get better it's like riding a bike or anything else where you start out and you don't know what the heck
25:12
you're doing when I quit my job as an officer I had zero social media understanding zero online marketing I
25:20
knew nothing so I've gone from no network no resources no nothing in like
25:27
what less than two years to where I am now and I'm pretty darn proud of that but it definitely again it doesn't
25:33
happen overnight and it doesn't happen without a whole heck of a lot of hard work and anybody at any age is capable
25:41
of doing it I agree I hundred percent agree and now you said you've done over 200 shows or thereabouts-- these shows
25:46
are on your podcast and they can go over into itunes or stitcher or any one of the programs that you can get on your
25:52
phone or even on your computer and you can download and become a subscriber so you get a message every time a new show
25:58
goes out and guys I'm telling you you got to do that you're on my your own life you know whenever I'm driving I can
26:03
listen to you right while I'm driving I mean and that's that's the thing where there's a will there's a way and when
26:10
you need to get information you need to go to Nicole and some of the really great people that are out there because she's going to help you on your way I
26:17
love quotes boats are my favorite thing in the whole world sometimes I'll put up in fact I get a whole boat in a meme on
26:24
the entrepreneur how every day is different you know today I'm feeling great oh god I'm going to go broke oh
26:30
the next day at this so it's funny that you said that the quote for today is from a gentleman by the name of
26:35
mccoshen he's an entrepreneur and web strategist and I love the quote I don't know who he is but I love the quote
26:42
purpose may point you in the right direction but it's passion that propels you and I know you like that one you
26:47
have a favorite quote they'd like to share with our audience sure or so there's a bunch and one of the ones that
26:53
really speaks to me is by Ralph Waldo Emerson and it is do not go where the path may lead go instead where there is
27:00
no path and leave a trail and I like I get all teary-eyed even say I like Brett event leave a trail I love that so that
27:07
people can find you and they can follow you and they can know that they can walk along the same path that you did and
27:12
that is awesome okay so here's one of my fun questions if you could spread passion dust on anyone in the world and
27:19
hope to accomplish anything that you want to accomplish it can be a group it can be a person who would you spread
27:25
that passion dust on oh my goodness I guess I should have been prepared for this I know I didn't prepare you for
27:31
that one I wanted to kind of just throw it at passion dust on anyone anywhere
27:36
you I mean your listeners I like that's that's my what I'm so passionate about
27:42
is entrepreneurs who are looking for those answers that I once was and I
27:48
still AM I'm always looking for people who are of integrity who are generous
27:54
who are giving and who aren't in it to get but they're in it to to share value
28:00
and to give yeah that's a great that's a great answer um so do have a song that
28:06
you are passionate about is there a song that get you up in the morning know that
28:15
you know is why I used to really any I'll listen to music every once in a
28:20
while but since I've kind of gone into this cocoon of I'm working around the
28:26
clock and no I'm very much a focused person I don't multitask and so if there's music on I'm not able to focus
28:32
so when in my downtime when I'm cooking or when i take a break then i will
28:38
listen to music and it really is whatever like kind of I feel so sometimes that's you know jazz I love
28:45
jazz sometimes that's classical sometimes that's you know classic rug sometimes it's pop
28:52
so I don't really have a specific thing that I listen to that's okay that's okay I can't listen to music either and I'm a
28:58
musician I cannot listen to music at all when I'm working for the same reason and I do multi test but that's just one more
29:04
thing on my list of multi task that I have to take off the plate so I totally get that we're coming towards the end of
29:09
the show and I is there anything else you'd like to share with our audience I know we're going to have the the summit link down there I know they're going to
29:16
be able to connect with you on social media we're going to put all the social media links in there as well what else
29:21
do you want to tell them if there's anything else you know just thank you i
29:27
want to tell you thank you Karen for having me here I want to tell your audience thank you for sticking with us
29:33
and listening and I want to just reiterate you know find that passion your there's no right place to find it
29:41
there's no right way but when you're intent on finding it you will and follow
29:46
your passion and you know go the path that is not already laid and you leave a
29:52
trail don't let anybody tell you it's possible for you just do you hi I so
29:58
agree i want to thank you so much for being on the show I know you're crazy busy right now getting ready for your your summit and again I'm going to say
